00:00The
00:27Biggest Apple Ever by Stephen Krull, illustrated by Jenny Bassett.
00:35Once there were two mice who fell in love with the same apple pie, but you had to be
00:40there to see how it happened.
00:46On opening day at Mousville School, the principal, Mr. Mouser, made an announcement.
00:52We will be learning about apples this fall, and to get things started we will have a contest.
00:58Whoever brings in the biggest apple to his teacher will win a special prize.
01:04The judging will take place on Friday.
01:06Good luck to everyone!
01:12I have an apple tree in my backyard, said Penelope.
01:16I bet it has really big apples.
01:19There is an apple tree across from my house, said James.
01:23I'm going to climb it as soon as I get home.
01:29I don't have any apple trees, said Clayton, the house mouse, but I'm going to find Mrs.
01:35Mousley the biggest apple ever.
01:37No, you're not, said his friend Desmond, the field mouse.
01:41I am.
01:42Oh, yeah, said Clayton.
01:44Yeah, said Desmond.
01:50All the way home on the school bus, Clayton and Desmond talked about the contest.
01:59Maybe I could grow an apple tree with really big apples, said Clayton.
02:04It takes too long, said Desmond.
02:06I heard Mrs. Mousley say six years.
02:10I'll think of something, said Clayton.
02:13So will I, said Desmond.
02:18When Clayton got off the bus, he sneaked back into town to see what Penelope and James were
02:23up to.
02:25Penelope had come down from her tree.
02:28She was carrying two tiny apples.
02:31James was still up in the tree across the street.
02:35He was picking very small apples.
02:37Clayton knew he'd seen bigger ones at the market.
02:41When Desmond came by a little later, he realized the same thing.
02:48The next day at school, Penelope and James brought in their tiny apples.
02:53No one else had brought in anything.
02:56Mrs. Mousley cleared her throat.
02:58Class, we have a lot of work to start this year, but because we are learning about apples
03:04and having an apple contest, we will go to Barnaby's Orchard this afternoon.
03:10Everyone got excited.
03:12I'm going to find the winning apple, said Clayton.
03:16I'm going to find the winning apple, said Desmond.
03:22At the orchard, Mrs. Mousley pointed out the different kinds of apples.
03:27Then everyone disappeared into the trees, looking for a winner.
03:32Clayton walked down one row, craning his neck.
03:36Desmond walked down another row, craning his neck.
03:39Then Clayton saw what he thought was a really big apple.
03:43It was a little too high to reach, but he stretched for it.
03:48At that moment, Desmond saw the very same apple on the very same branch.
03:54He stretched for it, too.
03:56They bumped heads and fell down.
03:59I think we should bring this apple in together, said Clayton.
04:03No one said we couldn't, said Desmond.
04:08But when they got back to the bus, James had an apple that was even bigger.
04:13The apple was so big he could hardly carry it.
04:17Clayton and Desmond looked at each other.
04:20What would they do now?
04:25That night at dinner, Clayton explained the problem to his dad.
04:30Hmm, said Dad.
04:32Apples don't come in too many sizes.
04:34Do you think you'll find a bigger one?
04:37I don't know, said Clayton.
04:39Then maybe James will win the prize this time.
04:42It's okay if he does.
04:47Over at Desmond's house, Uncle Vernon said exactly the same thing.
04:55But Clayton and Desmond were still determined.
04:59The next afternoon, they met at Barnaby's orchard.
05:02They picked two huge baskets of apples, but nothing they found was bigger than the apple
05:07James had picked.
05:13You know, Clayton said, I think Dad was right.
05:17This time James gets to win.
05:20But we've got all these apples.
05:22Why don't we bake a big apple pie?
05:25Desmond laughed.
05:26Great!
05:27Let's bake the biggest apple pie ever!
05:31And we'll make it for our class.
05:33Clayton nodded.
05:34And I think I know where we'll find a pie pan that's big enough.
05:41The following afternoon, Desmond arrived at Clayton's house with Uncle Vernon.
05:47Everything's packed up and ready, Clayton said.
05:50It's all in Dad's truck.
05:52But where are we going?
05:53Desmond asked.
05:54You'll find out in a minute, said Clayton.
06:01Dad drove, with Clayton and Desmond beside him in the front seat.
06:05Uncle Vernon stayed in back with the apples and other ingredients for the pie.
06:10As they came around a corner, Desmond gasped, Tony's pizza!
06:16Of course, said Clayton.
06:18What could be better than a giant pizza pan?
06:25Mr. Tony greeted them at the door.
06:27Welcome!
06:28Welcome!
06:29You're ready to begin!
06:31And so they got to work, making the dough for the crust, kneading it, rolling out half
06:37into a big circle, and spreading it over the deep-dish pan.
06:45Then everyone peeled and sliced the apples, mixed together the sugar and spices, and spread
06:51the rest of the dough on top.
06:53Wow, said Clayton and Desmond when they were finished.
06:56Wow, wow, wow!
06:59An hour, said Mr. Tony.
07:01Give me an hour!
07:03The giant pan just fit into his huge oven.
07:10The next day was Friday.
07:12Who would have the largest apple?
07:14James, of course.
07:16And Mr. Mouser handed him the prize, a cheddar cheese apple.
07:21Mrs. Mousely looked surprised.
07:23Clayton?
07:24Desmond?
07:25Nothing from you?
07:30The two of them grinned.
07:32At the same moment, the classroom door flew open.
07:36In came Clayton's dad, Uncle Vernon, and Mr. Tony, struggling to carry the giant pie by
07:42themselves.
07:47How wonderful, said Mrs. Mousely.
07:50That's the biggest apple pie ever!
07:53We made it for the whole class, said Clayton.
07:56All of us together, said Desmond.
07:59They shared a high five, and everyone in the class had a very big slice.
08:05I hope you enjoyed that story.
