00:00:00And good afternoon, everybody.
00:00:11Welcome to the Sam Berkwin show on Newstalk 1480 WHBC, Stark County Sports Powerhouse.
00:00:17It is a beautiful summer day, and I don't know about you, but it looks like football's
00:00:51in the air.
00:01:16Down in Division Four, the big news is that St. Thomas Aquinas welcomes its new head
00:01:20coach.
00:01:21Vince D'Antonio had a promising coaching career as offensive coordinator in the college
00:01:25ranks until he abruptly resigned five years ago.
00:01:30Now, it'll be interesting to see what he can do with the Knights, who haven't had a winning
00:01:36season since 2004.
00:01:37Now, senior quarterback Bobby Burkett has shown flashes of potential, but that team
00:01:43never has clicked.
00:01:44And it's thank you, Lord, for keeping us safe, and it's thank you, Mother, for making
00:02:01us brave.
00:02:02There's an old man on the front porch swinging, and he's always talking to nobody, but if
00:02:17you ever stop to listen, you might learn a thing or two, yeah, I'm talking to you.
00:02:26See, once was a young man, and he was holding a young girl's hand, and they were walking
00:02:31down by the lake in about 1948, and they had the first kiss, oh, with the moon shining
00:02:38down, and they knew the true love, oh, it really couldn't be found in this town, oh,
00:02:48in this town, in this town, in this town.
00:02:58Set, hut.
00:02:59Come on, know your assignment.
00:03:00Hey, Bobby.
00:03:01Yeah.
00:03:02What's the new coach doing way up there?
00:03:03I don't know, looking for a win.
00:03:04I know, man.
00:03:05Somebody needs a friend.
00:03:06Hut.
00:03:07Let's go, guys, bring it in.
00:03:08Take a knee.
00:03:09Come on.
00:03:10Take a knee.
00:03:11Kroger, Rucker, far goal post and back.
00:03:12Loser gets to go again in 100 push-ups.
00:03:13Come on.
00:03:14Come on.
00:03:15Come on.
00:03:16Come on.
00:03:17Come on.
00:03:18Come on.
00:03:19Come on.
00:03:20Come on.
00:03:21Come on.
00:03:22Come on.
00:03:23Come on.
00:03:24Come on.
00:03:25Come on.
00:03:26Come on.
00:03:27This is 100 push-ups.
00:03:28Move it.
00:03:29Taylor, Davis, Curry, Burkett, that's right.
00:03:38I watched tape of every play you made or didn't make in your miserable careers here at Aquinas.
00:03:46Your nine losses last year.
00:03:49You seniors, four-year starters, you've lost 25 games here.
00:03:56How does it feel?
00:04:00Rooker, you quit on the way back.
00:04:03You're done for the day.
00:04:04Next time, you're done for the year.
00:04:09Your record says you stink, but I don't think it's true.
00:04:13I think your habits stink, and that's what I'm here to fix.
00:04:17We'll start with your conditioning.
00:04:20Kroger, give me the goalpost.
00:04:22Rooker owes me.
00:04:23But I won, coach.
00:04:25And you won one lousy game last year.
00:04:28Don't start bragging about a win sprint.
00:04:34We're going to rebuild this program.
00:04:36It's not going to be easy or fun.
00:04:42Guess be ready to go Monday at 4.
00:04:46Start from scratch.
00:04:47Everybody has to earn their job.
00:04:49No incumbents.
00:04:50What about QB?
00:04:52Everybody.
00:04:53Bobby Burkett's got a heck of an arm, coach.
00:04:55Nobody's job is locked.
00:04:58Copy that.
00:04:59On defense, we use our speed.
00:05:01We're going to go to a 3-5-3.
00:05:03We don't have the size for anything else.
00:05:05We can do that, but I hope you have a plan
00:05:06to light up the scoreboard.
00:05:08We're going to open up the playbook.
00:05:10Even if Burkett delivers, we're a one-option team.
00:05:15Napier's great, but I need another deep thread.
00:05:20We're going to need to spread it out and throw downfield
00:05:23to beat these bigger teams.
00:05:24Well, that's all we have to work with, coach.
00:05:27Then I'm going to have to find us some more horses.
00:05:40Holy cow, Bill.
00:05:42It's like a sauna in here.
00:05:44Stop pointing that thing at me.
00:05:46It is August, you know.
00:05:48Will your heater be joining us for dinner, eh?
00:05:51I know it's August, but by my calculations,
00:05:57it would have saved us $400 last winter.
00:06:02Yeah, don't say.
00:06:04I stand corrected.
00:06:06It feels like the Garden of Eden in here.
00:06:12That's good.
00:06:13I like that.
00:06:15I can be your marketing director
00:06:17when you sell it to Mr. Handon.
00:06:19Problem is, I can't present something from my workshop
00:06:23no matter how good it is.
00:06:26And a real prototype costs about $30,000.
00:06:31Mom's famous fried chicken.
00:06:33Could smell it from the drive.
00:06:34Hey, Dad.
00:06:36Not till you clean up.
00:06:37What?
00:06:38Look, I'm starving.
00:06:38Your coach D'Antonio kept us for an extra 45 minutes,
00:06:41you know?
00:06:42I don't know what his problem is.
00:06:43Why is it so hot in here?
00:06:46Well, give him a chance.
00:06:47He'll give up on the night soon enough.
00:06:50Yeah, hearty, heart, heart, Dad.
00:06:51Oh.
00:06:57Hello?
00:06:59Oh, hi, Mr. Handon.
00:07:02Yes.
00:07:03Just a minute, please.
00:07:05You tell him we're about ready to have dinner.
00:07:10Hello, Mr. Handon.
00:07:15Bowling alley again.
00:07:17No, it's, I can, no, that won't, yeah, I'll.
00:07:24All right, well, we'll just see you.
00:07:28Goodbye.
00:07:30Really?
00:07:32You don't have to drop everything
00:07:34whenever that man calls.
00:07:36He is my boss.
00:07:38And maybe he will remember the favors when the time comes.
00:07:47Thank you.
00:07:59Hello, sir, how are you doing?
00:08:00Hi, good morning.
00:08:01How are you doing?
00:08:02I'm good.
00:08:03How are you doing?
00:08:04I'm good.
00:08:05Berkett, move out of the way.
00:08:09I didn't know they were having guests.
00:08:12The damn pen center is broken again, Berkett.
00:08:16John was showing off for this girl that he fancies.
00:08:20Yeah.
00:08:21He takes after the old man.
00:08:25How's Aquinas looking this year, Bobby?
00:08:27I don't really follow D5.
00:08:29Well, actually, we're division four, sir.
00:08:31Right.
00:08:32You know the way.
00:08:33I have to get ready for my guests.
00:08:36I know what you're thinking, just say it.
00:08:41Mikey!
00:08:42Mikey!
00:08:43Ah!
00:08:47Dad, what if I told you something
00:08:50that might disappoint you?
00:08:53You can't, but go ahead.
00:08:59Well, I'm not so sure if I want to play football this year.
00:09:02That's a relief.
00:09:03I was afraid you might be pregnant.
00:09:05Hand me a 3 quarter.
00:09:07Yeah.
00:09:08Why don't you want to play?
00:09:11I don't know.
00:09:12I mean, there just doesn't seem to be a good enough reason.
00:09:17I'm a new coach.
00:09:20Team still stinks.
00:09:24I'm just sick of losing.
00:09:26Proud of you for admitting it, especially in this town.
00:09:30Yeah.
00:09:31But if you're just discouraged, you
00:09:35If you're just discouraged, why don't you just sleep on it?
00:09:42See how you feel after.
00:09:44Can you put these things in the thing?
00:09:47Or is it too technical?
00:09:49Yeah.
00:09:50No, it's not too technical, Dad.
00:09:51It's just you stutter every two seconds.
00:09:53Easy there.
00:09:55I'll get the bag.
00:09:56You go wash up.
00:09:58Are you sure you got it?
00:09:59Yeah.
00:10:02I don't usually like a rhubarb pie.
00:10:04You know, to me, it's like a funky celery.
00:10:05You know, I mean, what is that?
00:10:06I don't even know what it is.
00:10:07I've never seen a rhubarb plant.
00:10:10But this is really, really quite good.
00:10:14You know what? Hoover's a great school.
00:10:15They'd be lucky to have you.
00:10:16Of course, they always have a lead.
00:10:17So the other team's got to throw.
00:10:18You get plenty of chances to bat down some balls.
00:10:21Or who knows, maybe even get a pick or two.
00:10:26What?
00:10:28What did I say?
00:10:29Don't you know about the play?
00:10:31The play?
00:10:32Let's not bring that up again, OK?
00:10:34Who cares?
00:10:35I broke up the play.
00:10:36Incomplete.
00:10:37And a story.
00:10:38It was gift wrap.
00:10:39You had nothing but daylight.
00:10:4080 yards wide open to the end zone.
00:10:42Now, Michelle?
00:10:43It was his best chance.
00:10:46My son, the rest of the drops.
00:10:52Damien, I don't think there's anything wrong with your hands.
00:10:55I think it's in your head.
00:10:57But I can fix it.
00:11:00Oh.
00:11:02Starts with switching you to wide receiver.
00:11:05Wide receiver?
00:11:16Yep, that is fake.
00:11:22What do you think you're doing?
00:11:23I'm changing.
00:11:24Well, I'm just.
00:11:25Get out, you perv.
00:11:26Sorry.
00:11:27Sorry.
00:11:30Up.
00:11:33Enjoy the show?
00:11:37Look, I'm not a perv.
00:11:40But yeah, maybe a little.
00:11:42Maybe a little.
00:11:44OK.
00:11:45You're not a perv, but you are a liar.
00:11:50Hi.
00:11:51You good?
00:11:52Yeah.
00:11:54Are you here for the party?
00:11:56No.
00:11:56No.
00:11:57Not exactly.
00:11:58I'm just repairing the bowling alley.
00:12:02Oh.
00:12:04Yeah, John was showing off.
00:12:08You don't look like a bowling alley repairman.
00:12:13Oh, really?
00:12:15What's a bowling alley repairman supposed to look like?
00:12:19Like a Stan.
00:12:20Stan?
00:12:21Wow.
00:12:25The mustache, and the coveralls, and a sad story.
00:12:31Well, I got a sad story.
00:12:32My name's Bobby.
00:12:34I'm Renee.
00:12:35Wow, Renee.
00:12:36You really know a lot about bowling alley repairman.
00:12:38Oh, so much.
00:12:39Oh, yeah?
00:12:40Yes.
00:12:41Do you and Johnny break them on a regular basis, or?
00:12:46No, not really.
00:12:49I just moved here, actually.
00:12:51It's my first year at Hoover, so.
00:12:54Cool.
00:12:55But if I happen to do it again, I'll call you.
00:12:58Call him what?
00:13:01Burke it.
00:13:02What are you doing in my house?
00:13:04Oh, you know, just, uh.
00:13:05Here to see what a real football team looks like.
00:13:08Oh, are you referring to your little chair squad over there?
00:13:13I'll let that go, because I feel so bad for you and your team.
00:13:16You consider yourselves lucky you don't have to play us, right?
00:13:19OK.
00:13:20Um, I'm going to finish changing.
00:13:24It was good meeting you.
00:13:26We should get some food, because I'm really hungry.
00:13:28OK, bye, Renee.
00:13:31Wow, man.
00:13:33Don't even think about it, Birkin.
00:13:35You're second team, and always will be.
00:13:38Yeah.
00:13:44Hey, Bill.
00:13:46Mr. Donahue, congratulations on the promotion.
00:13:49Oh, well, thanks.
00:13:50Thanks.
00:13:51How's the new house?
00:13:52Well, Renee's still getting used to it, but we love it.
00:13:55A nice upgrade, I will say.
00:13:57Hey, thanks for asking.
00:13:58This must be Bobby.
00:13:59Hey, good to see you.
00:14:00You ready?
00:14:01Hey, Birkin.
00:14:03This close.
00:14:06It's all fixed, Mr. Hannon.
00:14:07Good.
00:14:09Say, why don't the two of you stay?
00:14:11I'm unveiling our new uniforms.
00:14:13Best in Stark County.
00:14:14No, best in Ohio.
00:14:15We would, but Bobby has an early practice.
00:14:24Yeah.
00:14:26Maybe next time.
00:14:30Suit yourselves.
00:14:33Nice to meet you.
00:14:33Thank you.
00:14:34Good seeing you.
00:14:36Uh, 80s called.
00:14:46They want their diss man back.
00:14:49Yo, bro, how can you afford batteries?
00:14:51You can't even afford real clothes.
00:14:54Back off, four mile.
00:14:55You're messing with my cousin.
00:14:56You're messing with me.
00:14:59See you at school, Urkel.
00:15:01You won't have your bodyguard to back you up this year.
00:15:04Let's go.
00:15:07I can take care of myself, Justin.
00:15:08Yeah, I know.
00:15:10Just wanted to make sure that we're bowsering our customers.
00:15:15You taking an order for here or to go?
00:15:17I'm not here for dinner.
00:15:18I'm here for you.
00:15:20You're Big Mac, are you?
00:15:22I don't go by that.
00:15:23OK, Justin, then.
00:15:26I'm the new coach at Aquinas.
00:15:27You still want to play football?
00:15:29I don't got time for fooling.
00:15:30The world's a mess.
00:15:32I'm about today and tomorrow.
00:15:34All right, you can be accountable for those.
00:15:36We'll leave yesterday alone.
00:15:38What do you say?
00:15:39For real?
00:15:40For real.
00:15:43Justin, I'm sticking my neck out here.
00:15:46So if I say jump.
00:15:48I'm hopping like a mother, high as I can.
00:15:51OK.
00:15:53So we got an understanding, right?
00:15:55Yes, sir.
00:15:56Call me coach.
00:15:58Coach, there's one thing.
00:16:00I'm a package deal.
00:16:02His cousin, Jamal Lee, does he even play football?
00:16:07Yes, of course.
00:16:08Highly irregular.
00:16:10Well, he's got intangibles.
00:16:13Plus, you said I get three scholarships.
00:16:15No, I said we would consider three viable applicants
00:16:19who coincidentally played football.
00:16:22Look, we love this Damien Taylor.
00:16:25Excellent family, strong grades.
00:16:27He'll make a fine addition.
00:16:29But this Justin Mack.
00:16:32Do you know why Mr. Mack didn't play football last season?
00:16:35Because juvenile detention doesn't field a team.
00:16:39Aggravated assault is no small matter.
00:16:42He made a terrible mistake, father.
00:16:43Kids do that sometimes.
00:16:45And he's paid.
00:16:48Fellas, I want to introduce your new teammates.
00:16:51This is Justin Mack.
00:16:54That's Big Mac.
00:16:55They got thrown in jail.
00:16:56Don't call me that.
00:16:57Hey, listen.
00:16:58Everybody's starting over.
00:16:59All right?
00:17:00Justin's one of us now.
00:17:03Damien Taylor, wide receiver.
00:17:05Jamal Lee, he plays all over.
00:17:10Get in there, fellas.
00:17:17Now look at this.
00:17:19Sports page.
00:17:22Hoover, Hoover, Hoover.
00:17:25Every story in here is about Hoover.
00:17:28You know why?
00:17:29Because they're winners.
00:17:32Any mention of Aquinas?
00:17:35Not a word.
00:17:39So here we are.
00:17:41Square one.
00:17:45I don't care who you are or what position you think you play.
00:17:50Every job on this team is available to be won.
00:17:56Now show me some game intensity.
00:17:59Go, guys.
00:18:00First on the ball pitch, on the hand.
00:18:05UND, our DOGS.
00:18:09UND, our DOGS.
00:18:12Hold on.
00:18:14Gonna run.
00:18:16Take it from me.
00:18:17Ain't gonna take it anymore.
00:18:19Get on.
00:18:21We're gonna win.
00:18:23Hands in the air.
00:18:25Everybody's shouting.
00:18:28Hut one.
00:18:29Hut two.
00:18:31Let's go.
00:18:33Hoo, hoo.
00:18:35Hut one.
00:18:36Hut two.
00:18:38Let's go.
00:18:40Hoo, hoo.
00:18:41U-N-D-O-G-S.
00:18:44Get off me, man.
00:18:45Loser.
00:18:46U-N-D-R-G-O-G-S.
00:18:48Set hut.
00:18:49U-N-D-R-G-O-G-S.
00:18:52U-N-D-R-G-O-G-S.
00:18:56Hey.
00:18:58Scoreboard talks.
00:18:59You don't.
00:19:00Come on, Coach.
00:19:02We're working like dogs out here.
00:19:04We need a blow, man.
00:19:05When I want your opinion, Mr. Burkett,
00:19:07I'll give it to you.
00:19:08Goal post, all three of you.
00:19:10Murray, Floyd, Johnson, get in there.
00:19:13Run it right.
00:19:15He just kept making us do it again, again,
00:19:18and again, and again, and again.
00:19:19I don't know.
00:19:20Give him a chance.
00:19:21I'm sure he knows what he's doing.
00:19:23Not what he's trying to do, Dad.
00:19:25Is make us into something that we're not.
00:19:27I was going to wait till after dinner, but I can't.
00:19:32I cashed in our rainy day fund.
00:19:35It's for the prototype.
00:19:45This is everything.
00:19:48It's all we have.
00:19:51We wanted to do this for you.
00:19:53Look, Dad, that thing, that thing really works.
00:19:57I can't.
00:19:58It's too much pressure.
00:20:06Bill.
00:20:13I believe in you.
00:20:20Take it.
00:20:24All right.
00:20:28I'm ready to study.
00:20:29Yeah, not a bad way to spend the day.
00:20:31No, it's not.
00:20:32Wow.
00:20:33So what do you want to start with?
00:20:35History or pre-calc?
00:20:37Smart and pretty.
00:20:38I don't know what I like better.
00:20:44Hey, boys.
00:20:47John, I thought we were going to study.
00:20:49I promised we'd study.
00:20:51I promised we'd study.
00:20:52After we go for a swim.
00:20:54I don't have my bathing suits.
00:20:56Even better.
00:20:58Time to hit the beach.
00:21:01I love studying here.
00:21:15Backer, backer.
00:21:19Set hut.
00:21:25Justin, are you trying to break my quarterback?
00:21:29Sorry, coach.
00:21:30Sorry?
00:21:31What, are you going to write that on his cast?
00:21:33Your job is to protect the quarterback, period.
00:21:37Got it?
00:21:38Got it.
00:21:39Coach, I want my quarterbacks practicing in red jerseys.
00:21:44Water break, two minutes.
00:21:47So you can't catch.
00:21:49Too small to tackle anybody, and you're not very fast.
00:21:52Kind of limits what we can do with you.
00:21:55I mean, what position do you want to play, Jamal?
00:21:58Maybe I could sling it?
00:22:00Be the backup QB?
00:22:01Chillin' with the cheerleaders?
00:22:03Okay.
00:22:04Now back here on Earth, I mean, we've got to find a place for you.
00:22:07Coach wants us to find something for you to do.
00:22:10Well, I got an idea.
00:22:18Hut!
00:22:20Sorry, sorry.
00:22:23Don't worry, coach, we got this.
00:22:26Yeah, I can see that.
00:22:28Come on, let's try it again.
00:22:30Lace is out.
00:22:48You see this, Captain?
00:22:52I hope...
00:22:55I did the right thing.
00:22:59Good news.
00:23:01Johnny wants you in the cheer squad.
00:23:03Oh, that's so cool.
00:23:04I'm a cheerleader.
00:23:05Apparently you've made quite an impression on him this summer.
00:23:08You're so lucky.
00:23:09I'm so excited.
00:23:10See you at the game Friday, right?
00:23:11Yeah, I'm so excited.
00:23:13Good luck, you guys.
00:23:15Good luck, guys.
00:23:16See you at the game Friday, right?
00:23:17Yeah.
00:23:18Good luck, guys.
00:23:19See you at the game Friday, right?
00:23:20See you at the game Friday, right?
00:23:21Yeah.
00:23:22Yeah, we'll see you at the game Friday.
00:23:23See you at the game Friday, right?
00:23:24Yeah.
00:23:25You're so lucky.
00:23:26I'm just excited.
00:23:27See you at the game Friday, right?
00:23:28Yeah.
00:23:29Ladies.
00:23:30Hi.
00:23:31Hi.
00:23:32Excited for our, uh, study session tonight.
00:23:37I hope you're ready to actually study.
00:23:39Yeah, I'm ready to study.
00:23:40Gentlemen are scholars, right?
00:23:42Scholars.
00:23:43Go long.
00:23:46Boom.
00:23:47Handed.
00:23:48Get your car out of my spot.
00:23:50My bad, coach.
00:23:56Attention.
00:23:57Bill Burkett, please report to the conference room.
00:24:00Bill Burkett to the conference room, please.
00:24:04Come on in, Bill.
00:24:07Berkut.
00:24:10Stephen tells me you have something for us.
00:24:14Uh, I've been working on a product.
00:24:16An electric heater.
00:24:20It's not just an electric heater.
00:24:23It's not just, uh, an electric heater.
00:24:27It's the next generation.
00:24:31You did all this on your own?
00:24:33I have to admit, Birgit, I am impressed.
00:24:38Tell me more.
00:24:39Sell me.
00:24:42Um, instead of the usual electric coils,
00:24:47it uses infrared bulbs to heat up copper elements.
00:24:53The number-one selling point is that it's not dry heat.
00:24:59There's nothing like it on the market.
00:25:00Feels like a heater.
00:25:02My wife says it's the best thing
00:25:04we've ever used on the farm.
00:25:06Your tester was your wife?
00:25:08I've run technical studies as well.
00:25:11Infrared uses about 30% less electricity.
00:25:15Let me show you.
00:25:17As you can see,
00:25:19the heat doesn't just rise to the ceiling.
00:25:22It's evenly distributed.
00:25:24There's also safety.
00:25:26You know, conventional space heaters
00:25:27are the number-one cause of fires in the home,
00:25:31and infrared is significantly safer.
00:25:35How much would we have to sell this for?
00:25:37The initial price point would be about $500.
00:25:42$500 for a space heater?
00:25:44Really?
00:25:47We sell one that costs $60.
00:25:50Uh, all due respect, sir,
00:25:51that's like comparing a...
00:25:55Rolls-Royce to a golf cart.
00:25:58I've heard enough, Birgit.
00:26:01I think you know my answer.
00:26:05That'll be all, Bill.
00:26:07You need to get back to work.
00:26:09That'll be all, Bill.
00:26:10You need to get back to work.
00:26:30Here we go, guys, here we go!

00:27:19I knew this was going to happen.
00:27:25Oh, yeah.
00:27:27All right, fellas, pick your heads up.
00:27:31Played a football game tonight.
00:27:33Some good things out there.
00:27:35You guys were physical, and you worked hard.
00:27:39We just didn't execute in the key moments.
00:27:42So we run.
00:27:44-♪♪♪♪
00:27:48Ryan, seriously? Running.
00:27:51After a game.
00:27:53Yeah, a little hard work never hurt anybody.
00:27:55It's gonna be a long season.
00:27:57-♪♪♪♪
00:28:04It's a little Johnny hand, huh? Not bad.
00:28:06Don't give me a little Johnny hand.
00:28:08He had Wilson in the hands of him twice.
00:28:10We could add six touchdowns.
00:28:12He can still throw a long pass, brother.
00:28:14If he's gonna do any good once the line holds out,
00:28:16I mean, this isn't gonna work at the state championship.
00:28:19-♪♪♪♪♪
00:28:25Cranberry soda, huh?
00:28:27Yep.
00:28:29Refreshing.
00:28:31Cool and delicious.
00:28:34How about Davis? Davis is good.
00:28:36Who are those guys?
00:28:38The Hoover faithful.
00:28:41High school football fanatics.
00:28:43Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
00:28:45Jackson?
00:28:47Jackson has done a good job.
00:28:49Jackson has done a good job.
00:28:51All Hoover, all the time.
00:28:56I'm the new coach at Aquinas.
00:28:58Mmm. So you're a spy.
00:29:01They'll kill me.
00:29:03Spies get shot, right?
00:29:05Your secret's safe with me.
00:29:07Jackson's gotta move over to the middle.
00:29:09Relax, my friend. We have a good team.
00:29:11Thank you guys so, so much.
00:29:13Yeah, no problem. Here you go.
00:29:15Hey, do you want one, man?
00:29:17Nah, man, I'm cool. I'm done.
00:29:19Seriously, one more, please.
00:29:21What is this, a date?
00:29:23No, it's just a twisty swirl, man. Come on.
00:29:25It's good.
00:29:27Do you hear yourself, man?
00:29:30You're a good guy.
00:29:32I'm a good guy.
00:29:36They say that all breasts weren't apart
00:29:42By a guy that only loves with half a heart
00:29:48They say I'm digging my own grave
00:29:53But I say I'm six feet under anyway
00:29:57You're right in all the wrong ways
00:30:02Don't want you to change for me
00:30:05Don't rearrange for me
00:30:08I know you love me better
00:30:11Your love will keep me
00:30:13Hey.
00:30:15You know her?
00:30:17You're that guy from the party.
00:30:20Hey.
00:30:22Hi.
00:30:25You want some ice cream?
00:30:27No, I'm fine, thanks.
00:30:30Come on, man. You're crazy. Get in the game.
00:30:33Get out. Go over there.
00:30:41Hi.
00:30:42Hi.
00:30:43So, how's the new school working out for you?
00:30:47It's good.
00:30:49I mean, it's still early, but I'm finding my way around.
00:30:52Yeah, I feel the same way about Aquinas,
00:30:55but I've been going there my whole life.
00:30:58Really?
00:30:59Yeah, really.
00:31:02You know what? You know what you should do?
00:31:05What should I do?
00:31:07You should come to one of our games.
00:31:09Yeah, you should. We could definitely use more fans.
00:31:12Yeah, it's fun. And, you know, we need some more people.
00:31:15Give an old hoorah, but, uh...
00:31:17Hoorah?
00:31:18Yeah.
00:31:19Um, yeah, yeah. Here.
00:31:21Here's my number.
00:31:24And I'll come check yours out sometime.
00:31:28Cool.
00:31:31You should have ice cream with us sometime, too.
00:31:34What kind is that?
00:31:36It's sprinkles with, um, butter pecan.
00:31:39You added sprinkles to that?
00:31:41Yeah, absolutely.
00:31:42How old are you? Like, five?
00:31:44Hi.
00:31:46Ashley said we'd find you here.
00:31:48And here I am.
00:31:51Well, this is adorable. You boys on a date?
00:31:54See? That's what I said, man.
00:31:58Anyway, Renee, uh, we're all kind of headed over to my house.
00:32:01We're going to have burgers on the beach.
00:32:03My dad's cooking.
00:32:04You coming, right?
00:32:06Yeah, yeah. Sure, yes.
00:32:09See you there?
00:32:10I'll see you there.
00:32:13See? Lucky's a clown, man.
00:32:15See? Lucky's a clown, man.
00:32:30Conventional heating systems get to combustible temperatures
00:32:35that, uh, can dry out the sinuses and burn up oxygen.
00:32:41And this doesn't.
00:32:43I've already applied for a patent.
00:32:50What's it called?
00:32:52Eden Pure.
00:32:54My wife came up with that name.
00:32:56Tell you what.
00:32:58This is a testing agreement.
00:33:01If it performs well, we move on to the next step.
00:33:06Does that sound good to you?
00:33:14Yeah.
00:33:20Tins of Mike! Tins of Mike!
00:33:23Set!
00:33:26Green 80! Green 80!
00:33:29Set hut!
00:33:40Get him out.
00:33:41Damien!
00:33:43What's that about, Coach?
00:33:44You're done. Take a seat.
00:33:46But, Coach, I...
00:33:47That's not the way we do it. Take a seat.
00:34:07There's no talking to this guy. He's too intense.
00:34:11Drink your milk, gentlemen.
00:34:12Oh, what? You don't like 2%?
00:34:14Go, Post! Run him!
00:34:15That's all he says.
00:34:18You know, uh...
00:34:19You know what the problem is?
00:34:21Aaron, a guy with the nuclear whistle?
00:34:23No.
00:34:24No, the problem is that he's, uh...
00:34:26He's right.
00:34:30Come on, man.
00:34:31We actually have a chance to do something this season, guys.
00:34:34I don't... I don't want to be on a team
00:34:36that loses again and again and again and again.
00:34:39Do you?
00:34:40No.
00:34:42So before we say anything else about this coach...
00:34:46You know...
00:34:47Ben, why don't you just stick to your route
00:34:49and make sure it's tight, and then...
00:34:51Damien, I'll put it on the numbers.
00:34:53You just see it through, okay?
00:34:57Dakota, you stick to your man,
00:34:59and you make sure that nobody gets past you.
00:35:04Hey, Jamal.
00:35:06Just keep them laces facing out, buddy, and we'll be okay.
00:35:12We have a chance this season.
00:35:15And I know we can do it.
00:35:19That's... That's all I got to say.
00:35:26Just want you to know...
00:35:28I got your back.
00:35:30I got your back.
00:35:46Michael!
00:35:47Pull your socks up. Tuck your shirt in.
00:35:50And, dammit, pull your pants up.
00:35:52You look good, you feel good, you play good.
00:35:54Yes, coach.
00:36:00You could be your own spotlight
00:36:02You could be the star, you could shine so bright
00:36:07You could be your own spotlight
00:36:11Depression is a little bit like happiness
00:36:13Taylor!
00:36:17Hmm...
00:36:19What happened there?
00:36:21Didn't have time to think.
00:36:22Just caught it.
00:36:23Exactly.
00:36:25We're gonna work on getting you to turn your smart parts off.
00:36:28And get your lizard brain working.
00:36:32Watch it all the way into your hands, okay?
00:36:35There.
00:36:36Use this.
00:36:38Make it a game.
00:36:40All right?
00:36:41My shirt.
00:36:42Come on.
00:36:43You could be your own, be your own
00:36:47You could be your own spotlight
00:36:53You could be the star, you could shine so, shine so, shine so bright
00:36:57Shine so, shine so, shine so
00:36:59Spotlight, spotlight, spotlight
00:37:03You could be your own, be your own
00:37:06You could be the star, you could shine so, shine so bright
00:37:11You could be your own, be your own
00:37:13You could be your own spotlight
00:37:16That's right.
00:37:17We back.
00:37:22Hi, Bill.
00:37:23Thanks for coming in on such short notice.
00:37:25Thanks.
00:37:26Hi.
00:37:27Didn't want to have to tell you this over the phone.
00:37:38Bill.
00:37:40I don't think this is a good idea.
00:37:42Yeah, Dad.
00:37:43I mean, these prices are really expensive.
00:37:45I mean, they don't even show the prices.
00:37:47Come on.
00:37:48Let's live a little.
00:37:51You know, when I first started...
00:37:56dating your mother, I didn't have a penny to my name.
00:38:00I think we've heard this story before.
00:38:04What's really going on, Bill?
00:38:06It's not important.
00:38:08I just signed an agreement with SCI for the heater.
00:38:12You should order the steak.
00:38:14I heard it's very good here.
00:38:16One million dollars?
00:38:21Wait, did you just...
00:38:23Did you just say one million dollars?
00:38:25The check is not in the bank, but it's...
00:38:28It's looking pretty good.
00:38:36Can we order champagne?
00:38:38I already ordered it.
00:38:50You've got to be the finest thing I've ever seen.
00:38:54The magazines don't know what they're missing.
00:38:57Some of them are wishing it's legitimate.
00:39:00I'm sick of it.
00:39:01Come and sit and tell me something.
00:39:03And if you keep me guessing, I don't know why I follow for you.
00:39:06I like the way you dance.
00:39:08I like the way you move.
00:39:10You make me want to tell you nothing but the truth.
00:39:14When are you coming over?
00:39:16Baby, I need you near me tonight.
00:39:19Tonight, tonight, I'm going out of my mind.
00:39:27He's been texting all week.
00:39:29Hope he's got the unlimited plan.
00:39:32He can't help it, the boy's in love.
00:39:36All right, all right, just worry about the game night, guys.
00:39:40Uh-oh.
00:39:43Two-and-oh! Two-and-oh! Two-and-oh!
00:39:47Two-and-oh! Two-and-oh! Two-and-oh!
00:39:51Play more where that came from, guys!
00:40:02You see that?
00:40:04Hi. Hi.
00:40:06John, give me my phone back. What are you doing?
00:40:09You've got nothing to hide from me.
00:40:11But it's none of your business.
00:40:14Are you serious?
00:40:18Are you serious?
00:40:24I mean, don't worry, I'll buy you a new phone.
00:40:26You need an upgrade anyway.
00:40:28Yeah.
00:40:30Who's that all about? I don't know. Shut up. Work it.
00:40:33Let's go, guys! Let's go!
00:40:35Whoo!

00:40:54Jamal, get out there.
00:40:56What? But I messed up the lesson.
00:40:58You're the holder, right? Now go win the damn game.
00:41:03You're gonna need your helmet, son.
00:41:08Whoo!
00:41:12Go Knights!
00:41:28Hut!
00:41:33Yeah!
00:41:37But I kicked it.
00:41:47Look at you.
00:41:49You didn't need luck. I knew you'd win.
00:41:54I'm glad you came to the game.
00:41:56Yeah, me too. I had fun.
00:41:58Cool.
00:42:00You were very impressive. Yeah, I did all right.
00:42:02Mediocre. No, that was some good football.
00:42:05Thanks.
00:42:07Hey, John. What are you guys doing here?
00:42:09Oh, you know, we thought we'd check out the game.
00:42:12We love a good powder puff.
00:42:14It was cute. Too bad you guys don't have any real competition.
00:42:17Come on, Hoover. Like Hoover?
00:42:19Yeah. In your dreams.
00:42:21Nah, man. In your nightmares.
00:42:23Whoa, whoa, whoa. Come on, man.
00:42:25Bring it on, Knights.
00:42:27I don't see anything here that scares me.
00:42:30Well, obviously you're afraid of something or else you wouldn't have been here.
00:42:35But hey, man.
00:42:37Thanks for coming to the game. Hope you enjoyed it.
00:42:40Take care.
00:42:42Let's get out of here.
00:42:44Hey.
00:42:46Thanks for coming.
00:42:48Yeah.
00:42:50Good seeing you.
00:42:54I'm just...
00:43:00Yo, check it out.
00:43:02Johnny, Mr. Perfect Handin wasn't so perfect, was he?
00:43:06We finally made the paper.
00:43:08Yeah, baby. About time.
00:43:10Hey, check it out. Local inventor Bill Burkett.
00:43:13That's your dad, Bobby.
00:43:15Yeah.
00:43:16SCI Manufacturing announced that they will initially be hiring 500 workers
00:43:20in the next quarter for the manufacture of a revolutionary space heater.
00:43:24With the addition of these 500 new jobs,
00:43:27SCI is poised to surpass the Handin Corporation
00:43:30as the largest manufacturer in Stark County.
00:43:33Bill, can I speak to you for a minute?
00:43:37I didn't think you'd be back to work with a big contract and all.
00:43:41They don't pay me until they start the manufacture.
00:43:45I know Renee has become friendly with your son,
00:43:48so it makes this even more difficult.
00:43:52What are you trying to say?
00:43:55In these economic times,
00:43:57we're faced with difficult decisions every day.
00:44:00It's with great reluctance
00:44:02that we are forced to determine that your position is no longer needed.
00:44:06Cut the crap. We both know what this is really about.
00:44:20Mayor, it's my understanding
00:44:22that SCI is continuing with their plan for the factory expansion.
00:44:27All I know is that they've promised a minimum of 500 new jobs.
00:44:32You and I are friends, aren't we, Mayor?
00:44:35You like playing golf at my club.
00:44:37You like my fundraisers, don't you?
00:44:41I want you to delay their permits.
00:44:44That's not feasible.
00:44:46I believe my generous donations to the community and your campaign
00:44:50prove that I am a good citizen.
00:44:52And as a good citizen,
00:44:54all I'm asking for is some help from my elected official.
00:45:04Mr. Bill Burkett?
00:45:08Sharon, they're suing me.
00:45:11They fired me, and now Handan is claiming intellectual ownership.
00:45:19They want to take the heater by court order.
00:45:23What can we do to fight it?
00:45:25Unfortunately, there's no way we can get involved
00:45:29until the rights are free and clear.
00:45:31You should talk to an attorney friend of mine.
00:45:34She can help you.
00:45:38Can I get an advance?
00:45:41I'm sorry, Bill.
00:45:43Okay.
00:45:46Bobby, Renee's here.
00:45:53Don't worry, okay? Everything's going to be fine.
00:45:55It's all going to work out.
00:45:57Yeah, everything's going to be fine.
00:45:59Have fun.
00:46:05Hi.
00:46:07Hey.
00:46:08You look nice.
00:46:10Yeah?
00:46:11Are you ready? I think the movie starts at 7.10.
00:46:14Yeah.
00:46:16You know, I don't feel like going to the movies.
00:46:21Is that cool?
00:46:23Yeah, that's fine.
00:46:27Why don't I go for a walk?
00:46:29Come on, Mr. Grumpy Pants.
00:46:31We're going for a walk.
00:46:36It's so peaceful out here.
00:46:39Why do you hang out with all those jerks?
00:46:43Excuse me?
00:46:45Golden Boy Handin
00:46:47and those dumbass cheerleaders.
00:46:50Let's just forget about them.
00:46:53Your season's starting to turn around.
00:46:55You've been playing great.
00:46:57Do you have any idea how many kids would kill
00:46:59to be in your shoes right now?
00:47:04You know, my father worked as hard as anyone ever could.
00:47:11And right when he was on the verge of success,
00:47:14some lawyer shows up and crushes his dreams.
00:47:18Just like that. That's all it took.
00:47:20Just one piece of paper and crushed everything.
00:47:24So what's it worth?
00:47:27I mean, all of our dreams are just going to come crashing down.
00:47:32Did you know that I volunteer down at the Y
00:47:36on Saturdays for this, um, special needs cheer squad?
00:47:42Those kids are amazing.
00:47:45They're never going to be doctors or lawyers.
00:47:51That doesn't stop them from doing what they love.
00:47:55They always remind me that everything is possible
00:47:59They always remind me that everyone has their special talent.
00:48:03It's the lucky ones that know what it is already.
00:48:06The rest of us, we have to find it.
00:48:08We have to discover it.
00:48:12You have a God-given gift, Bobby.
00:48:17Just enjoy this moment.
00:48:21No matter where it's taking you.
00:48:25Come on. Come on. Come on.
00:48:31You're so grumpy.
00:48:34You're back with Sam Berkwin here on 1480 WHBC,
00:48:37live and local, the Sports Powerhouse in Canton, Ohio.
00:48:40What a beautiful day. Temperature's in the 60s,
00:48:43and I don't know about you, but I'm ready for a little football.
00:48:50And you know, we've been watching this
00:48:52St. Thomas Aquinas football team become the little team that could.
00:49:01In his first season, new head coach Vince D'Antonio
00:49:04seems to have really gotten to these kids and lit a fire under that team.
00:49:23Cut.
00:49:26This Bobby Burkett to Damian Taylor connection has finally started to click.
00:49:30Along with Ben Napier, Aquinas has become a high octane offense,
00:49:34firing on all cylinders.
00:49:53And after a one in nine season a year ago,
00:49:56they are rocketing up the standards.
00:49:58What's even more amazing is the last time St. Thomas Aquinas made the playoffs.
00:50:03Most of you weren't even born yet.
00:50:05It's been almost 20 years.
00:50:22Bam.
00:50:26This injunction hearing is before just a judge. There's no jury.
00:50:30But we have to win, because once the judge makes his ruling,
00:50:33it's very unlikely he'll change it during a trial.
00:50:37You're gonna be great, Bill.
00:50:42All rise.
00:50:45This court is now in session. The Honorable Edward J. Elam presiding.
00:50:48Thank you.
00:50:49Good morning. You may be seated, please.
00:50:52The matter before the court is plaintiff's motion for injunctive relief.
00:50:56Mr. Jannings, representing the plaintiff, will go first.
00:51:01And then Mr. Burkett will have his say.
00:51:04And most importantly, it is clearly spelled out in the employee's contract.
00:51:10As you can see in paragraph 27.
00:51:13This is our intellectual property clause.
00:51:16It covers any inventions or ideas developed while under the employment of the Handen Corporation.
00:51:22Can you please tell the judge how you came up with the idea for the EdenPure heater?
00:51:27Well, my wife, Nancy, always gets cold feet in winter.
00:51:34Um, wears socks to bed.
00:51:38I was fixing plumbing in our house.
00:51:42And had left a stack of copper piping near the heater in the workshop.
00:51:47The next day, I realized they were radiating heat and I knew that copper would be a key component.
00:51:55For a heat source, I used far infrared.
00:52:00It has a wavelength of longer than 15 microns.
00:52:04So I built a crude prototype.
00:52:09And it worked better than I expected.
00:52:16The entire room was heated from ceiling to floor.
00:52:21We used this heater all winter and it was great.
00:52:27Uh, most importantly, my wife's feet weren't cold anymore.
00:52:35That was a charming story, Mr. Burkett.
00:52:38But I need evidence.
00:52:40Judge, I don't think...
00:52:42Mr. Burkett, you can step down.
00:52:44Now that I've heard all the testimony, you will receive my formalized opinion by the end of the month.
00:52:50This court is adjourned.
00:52:56I see you, coach.
00:52:58Mr. Burkett!
00:53:00Sit down.
00:53:03So what, am I in trouble?
00:53:07You know, I never had any doubt about your ability.
00:53:11I was worried about your motor.
00:53:13Whether you had what it takes to be a leader.
00:53:16But you surprised me.
00:53:19So I sent a tape of you over to Coach Bowden at Akron U.
00:53:26That's probably a waste of time.
00:53:29You really think that?
00:53:31I don't know. They got a pretty good program.
00:53:33Well, I think you're more than good enough to play there.
00:53:35Are you kidding me?
00:53:37I don't kid.
00:53:39Get out of here.
00:53:41Okay.
00:53:59Is that Bobby again?
00:54:01Don't worry, I'll tell him.
00:54:04Look, I know I'm asking a lot here.
00:54:07But there's this lawsuit.
00:54:10It's complicated.
00:54:12Now, it's just for a time.
00:54:14I mean, you have to try to understand that...
00:54:16I'm never gonna understand, Dad.
00:54:19You've always told me to follow my heart.
00:54:21But I guess you just forgot the it's complicated part, right?
00:54:41It's me.
00:54:43It's me, it is me.
00:54:45What's up?
00:54:47I'm fine.
00:54:49How about you?
00:54:51I'm fine, just...
00:54:54I'm not okay.
00:54:56You know, I'm not okay.
00:54:59I can't do this.
00:55:01I'm not okay.
00:55:03I'm not okay.
00:55:05I don't know what to do.
00:55:07♪ I can be the laughingstock
00:55:11♪ I can be the hoax
00:55:13♪ But I ain't gonna lose you
00:55:19♪ No, I ain't gonna lose you
00:55:22You shouldn't be here.
00:55:25Renee.
00:55:26Bobby, just go home, okay?
00:55:27You're gonna get me in trouble.
00:55:29Look, I just want to hear it from you, okay?
00:55:33You don't understand.
00:55:34This just isn't a good time.
00:55:36You're right. I don't understand.
00:55:38Because last I checked, you told me to enjoy the moment,
00:55:41and how am I supposed to do that without you?
00:55:45You gotta wake my dad up.
00:55:47I can't wake your old man up.
00:55:52I'm sorry.
00:55:53♪ No, I ain't gonna lose you
00:55:57Now, you tell me to walk away, and I'll walk away.
00:56:01♪ I can't stand
00:56:04♪ The thought of another man
00:56:06I just need to hear it from you.
00:56:10Tell me what you want, Renee.
00:56:15Bobby.
00:56:18I'm sorry. I have to go.
00:56:21♪ Take me to my place
00:56:44The big football news was Bobby Burkett,
00:56:47quarterback of St. Thomas Aquinas, going for five touchdowns.
00:56:50Holy smokes! This kid is on fire.
00:56:53And for the first time in almost 20 years,
00:56:55the Knights have made it to the playoffs.
00:56:57Hut, hut! Hut! Hut!
00:56:59In other news, John Handon of Hoover answered with three touchdowns
00:57:03and a rushing score.
00:57:04The way he's playing, the Vikings are in line
00:57:06for yet another championship trophy.
00:57:08Phones are blowing up. Let's go to Dan the Man on line two.
00:57:11Welcome to the Sam Berkwin Show. Dan, how are you?
00:57:13Hey, Sam. How you doing?
00:57:14Hey, you know what? I think you're onto something.
00:57:16I mean, the Vikings are tearing it up this year.
00:57:18That's to be expected.
00:57:19But come on, Aquinas? Who knew?
00:57:21They may be D4, but they might be the best team in the county.
00:57:25What I wouldn't give to see them play each other.
00:57:27Dan, probably not likely, but I appreciate the call.
00:57:37Mitch Duran, sports. I'm a deadline. Make it quick.
00:57:41Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Slow down.
00:57:43I'm just a sports reporter.
00:57:57Sorry. We're closed.
00:58:00No.
00:58:02Wait.
00:58:03Whose are those?
00:58:06Oh, it's staff only at this time. Sorry, ma'am.
00:58:10Ma'am?
00:58:13It's on ma'am now.
00:58:17No, I didn't mean, uh...
00:58:20I wasn't saying anything. I just... I was just thinking...
00:58:23I wasn't thinking, but, you know, that miss means, you know, like...
00:58:27like a teenager, right?
00:58:28And ma'am is anybody who's, you know, like, I don't know,
00:58:31out of college or old enough to have kids.
00:58:36You know, I always wanted to have kids.
00:58:39Huh?
00:58:41Turns out my ex did not.
00:58:46So here I am.
00:58:49Are you single?
00:58:51Or are you just a married guy flirting with a bartender?
00:58:55I was a married guy.
00:58:5716 years, but, uh...
00:59:01I lost her. Cancer.
00:59:04Sucks.
00:59:05Sucks.
00:59:07But, uh...
00:59:09Been a long road, and...
00:59:11Here I am.
00:59:14A guy flirting with a lovely bartender.
00:59:19Who probably needs quarters.
00:59:22Let's see what I got here.
00:59:24Get them all.
00:59:36She was too young, Vince.
00:59:43Yeah.
00:59:45I had to look up the last time the Knights made the playoffs.
00:59:49It was in a dusty book.
00:59:51A very dusty book.
00:59:54You did a good job.
00:59:56No matter what happens, you...
00:59:59You brought pride back to this community.
01:00:02All credit to these kids, Father.
01:00:03What do you think of this whole talk about a game of champion?
01:00:07It's just a bunch of media hype.
01:00:09What's in the box?
01:00:11I have gotten more calls about us playing Hoover
01:00:15than I did when the Pope came to Detroit in 87.
01:00:19I think there's more to it than just hype.
01:00:25You're enjoying this, aren't you?
01:00:27Really.
01:00:28David and Goliath.
01:00:30Hello.
01:00:32Hmm.
01:00:44Mr. Hammond?
01:00:46Mitch Duran, from the repository.
01:00:49Of course. How you doing, Mitch?
01:00:51Good, thank you.
01:00:53Kind of late for an interview.
01:00:55Actually, I wanted to ask you a question
01:00:58about your trip to Mexico.
01:00:59According to your flight plan,
01:01:01this was your sixth flight to Juarez
01:01:03in the past three months.
01:01:05Are the rumors true that you're planning
01:01:07on moving your manufacturing to Mexico?
01:01:09This is going to have a major impact on the local economy.
01:01:11Mitch, where in the world did you hear that scurrilous nonsense?
01:01:14It's just ridiculous.
01:01:16I wouldn't print that if I were you.
01:01:18You're on the record, Mr. Hammond.
01:01:21What do you want to say about this accusation?
01:01:25Good to see you, Mitch.
01:01:27Good to see you, Mitch.
01:01:35Shut the damn door.
01:01:39Mmm. Delicious.
01:01:50¿Dónde está René?
01:01:52I don't know.
01:01:53No. En español, hijo. Por favor.
01:01:56No sé dónde René está.
01:01:59Bueno.
01:02:01She better not be with Bobby Burkett. I'll kill him.
01:02:03Can we please just have one meal
01:02:05where we don't talk about a Burkett?
01:02:07Both of you.
01:02:09Did you hear they're saying he's as good as me?
01:02:12Can you believe it?
01:02:14I mean, the whole town's talking about us
01:02:16playing each other if we both win our divisions
01:02:18in some game of champions.
01:02:21I'd give anything to bury that punk.
01:02:23So let me get this straight.
01:02:25You're saying you would be in favor
01:02:27of a game of champions, Mr. Hammond?
01:02:30Well, Sam, I know it's highly irregular
01:02:32to propose a game of this magnitude.
01:02:35But I also know that in these hard economic times,
01:02:40every school, every art department,
01:02:44every athletic program is struggling just to get by.
01:02:48What I propose is a post-season charity event
01:02:52which will help us to raise much-needed funds
01:02:55for our children and their futures.
01:02:58And my company is willing to make a donation
01:03:01of $100,000 to the school that wins this charity game.
01:03:06Yes!
01:03:13What a remarkable ride it has been
01:03:15for St. Thomas Aquinas.
01:03:17Bobby Burkett has been tearing up the playoffs.
01:03:19And the Knights are one win away
01:03:22from both the Division 4 state title
01:03:24and a game of champions.
01:03:26All they have to do is beat the Falcons.
01:03:29But not to be outdone,
01:03:31John Handon has led the Vikings
01:03:33into the Division 1 finals
01:03:35for the third time in the last four years.
01:03:47This better be important.
01:03:49I'm in the middle of my game.
01:03:51Have you seen the newspaper?
01:03:53Let me guess.
01:03:55Handon Corp pulling out all stops
01:03:57for game of champions.
01:03:59I paid our PR agency for front page placement.
01:04:02It is the front page.
01:04:04Only it's you.
01:04:06The factory moved to Mexico.
01:04:08What do you want to do about this?
01:04:10We need to stay on message with this.
01:04:13I got a big shiny game of champions to sell.
01:04:19I'm in the middle of my game.
01:04:49I'm in the middle of my game.
01:05:20You okay?
01:05:22You don't look so hot.
01:05:24Must have been something I ate.
01:05:27I'll be ready, coach.
01:05:29Welcome.
01:05:31Welcome.
01:05:33Tomorrow is a big day for Aquinas.
01:05:36And I hear there's a football game.
01:05:40We're here to give praise.
01:05:43And to celebrate.
01:05:45And to celebrate.
01:05:46We're here to give praise.
01:05:48And to ask for his blessings.
01:05:52We all know struggle.
01:05:54And some of us have struggled more than others.
01:05:58I'd like to read a passage that I've been saving
01:06:01for a special occasion like this.
01:06:04Taken from St. Paul's first letter to the Corinthians.
01:06:08Be on your guard.
01:06:11Stand firm in the faith.
01:06:14Be courageous.
01:06:16Be strong.
01:06:19And...
01:06:21Beat the pants off the Falcons.
01:06:29I gotta say, coach, I never thought I'd see the day
01:06:32that we were in the state finals.
01:06:34Yeah, I knew it the whole time.
01:06:36Think fast.
01:06:42This is Vince.
01:06:44Mr. Napier, is he any better?
01:06:47Thanks for letting me know.
01:06:49That was Ben's dad. Fever's up to 102. No go.
01:06:54Well, I hope it's not all through the locker room.
01:06:59Hello? Coach Wolfrick?
01:07:01Hello.
01:07:03Stomach flu? Oh, no.
01:07:05Time out! Time out! Time out!
01:07:08This our last shot.
01:07:10It's a state title, coach. You gotta put me in.
01:07:13Justin, look at yourself. You shouldn't even be here.
01:07:16I'm sorry.
01:07:18I'm sorry.
01:07:20I'm sorry.
01:07:22I'm sorry.
01:07:24I'm sorry.
01:07:26I'm sorry.
01:07:28I'm sorry.
01:07:30I'm sorry.
01:07:32I'm sorry.
01:07:33Look at yourself. You shouldn't even be here.
01:07:35Get out of here.
01:07:37This is it, Bobby. Got one more play.
01:07:40Need seven, all right? Let's go.
01:07:42We got this.
01:07:50Set!
01:07:52Goal! 78!
01:07:54Goal! 78!
01:07:56Hut!
01:08:04Goal!
01:08:30I'm gonna hang your heads, fellas.
01:08:31Good work. Good job.
01:08:33Good job.
01:08:38All right, good fight.
01:08:46Good work. Good job.
01:08:48You left it on the field. Good work.
01:09:01Good work.
01:09:20God, I wish we could have played Hoover.
01:09:22Yeah, man. Me too.
01:09:32Now, despite half of their team being out with the flu,
01:09:35the Knights almost pulled out that state championship game.
01:09:38Now, in the later game yesterday,
01:09:40the Vikings rolled to a 31-10 victory.
01:09:43Hold on.
01:09:45We have a caller on the hotline.
01:09:47It's Coach Vince D'Antonio of St. Thomas Aquinas.
01:09:50Coach, sorry about your loss.
01:09:52How are you doing?
01:09:54Oh, it was a tough one.
01:09:56I can't believe it.
01:09:58I can't believe it.
01:09:59Coach, sorry about your loss.
01:10:01How are you doing?
01:10:03Oh, it was a tough one.
01:10:05Not gonna make any excuses, but we still want Hoover.
01:10:07Well, it was supposed to be a game of champions.
01:10:09And we didn't take care of business
01:10:11against Alliance Park.
01:10:13I'll give you that.
01:10:15But if Hoover wants a real football game,
01:10:17they know where to find it.
01:10:19Well, between the rumors of a factory move
01:10:21and the Hamblin Corp lawsuit,
01:10:23this is one town that is ready for a showdown.
01:10:25This is a lovely place you have here, Bill.
01:10:27Just lovely.
01:10:29Would be a real shame to lose it.
01:10:34Look, Bill, we both know
01:10:36how this is gonna play out in court.
01:10:39But it's not too late.
01:10:41We can still put this behind us.
01:10:44All right, listen, I'll tell you what.
01:10:46You can have your old job back.
01:10:49And I'll even give you a piece of the heater sales.
01:10:51No hard feelings.
01:10:53All you have to do is just sign our contract.
01:10:57Mister.
01:10:59I'm sorry.
01:11:07Handa,
01:11:09I think you know my answer.
01:11:12Well, you can't say I didn't try.
01:11:16I'll see you in court.
01:11:22Good morning.
01:11:24I have reviewed the evidence,
01:11:26including your ironclad employment agreement.
01:11:29This alone seems to make my decision clear-cut.
01:11:33The defendant, Mr. Burkett,
01:11:35has presented no evidence
01:11:37to prove otherwise.
01:11:41However,
01:11:43upon closer inspection,
01:11:45I looked at one indisputable fact.
01:11:47Bill Burkett
01:11:49offered his heater to the Handan Corporation first.
01:11:52And you turned him down.
01:11:54The court denies
01:11:56the plaintiff's motion for an injunction.
01:11:57Your Honor, you can't...
01:11:59And the court rules in favor of the defendant.
01:12:02Your Honor, there's...
01:12:04You are no longer entitled
01:12:06to take advantage of your employees
01:12:08or this community.
01:12:10This matter is concluded.
01:12:12Your Honor...
01:12:14All rise.
01:12:16This court is now adjourned.
01:12:22Tell Aquinas to bring it on.
01:12:27The big news today
01:12:29is that Hoover has accepted Aquinas' challenge
01:12:31and the Game of Champions is a full go.
01:12:33Oh, boy.
01:12:35This is like getting an early Christmas present.
01:12:37This whole town cannot wait for Saturday.
01:12:40Hey, Joe, it's Vince D.
01:12:43Oh, good, good.
01:12:45You know, living the dream,
01:12:47coaching high school football.
01:12:49Hey, listen, you know, you said,
01:12:51if I ever need anything,
01:12:53well, I kind of need a favor.
01:12:57I just can't get
01:12:59I just can't get
01:13:01I just can't get
01:13:03I just can't get
01:13:05I just can't get

01:13:29I just can't get
01:13:31I just can't get
01:13:33I just can't get
01:13:35Ah!
01:13:37Just can't get
01:13:51Good evening,
01:13:52and welcome to WHVC's broadcast
01:13:54for tonight's historic charity game
01:13:55tonight's historic charity game between Division One State Champion Herbert Hoover High School
01:13:59and Crosstown Division Four St. Thomas Aquinas. My name is Sam Berkwin and I'm alongside my
01:14:04colleague tonight former Stark County Junior College place kicker Mike the Motor Mouth
01:14:09Mayhew. Well it's a perfect night for football Sam. I mean the stadium is packed. I'm smelling
01:14:14popcorn, hot dogs, testosterone. While Hoover has always had a lot of community support
01:14:20there sure seems to be a lot of black and gold in the stands. Tonight's game is being
01:14:29sponsored by a generous contribution from the Hambin Corporation and tonight's winning
01:14:33team gets a $100,000 donation. I cannot wait to crush Aquinas and put an end to this foolishness
01:14:40once and for all. Well for me Sam they might as well just make that check out to Hoover
01:14:44right now. I mean this is kind of like me against my ex-wife in divorce court and I'm
01:14:48Aquinas. All right fellas real quick listen up. You guys have all heard the radio chatter
01:14:55you've read the papers except you Kroger I don't think you can read yet can you? Now
01:15:00the experts say we don't have a chance right? Only one way to shut everybody up. Win. What's
01:15:07your best speech ever coach? Well I got a friend here who wants to say hello to you.
01:15:13He knows a little bit about beating the odds. Joe? No way. Who's that dude? That's Broadway Joe. Joe Namath.
01:15:23All right fellas I've been hearing a lot about you guys. St. Thomas Aquinas. Underdogs right?
01:15:31Well I'll tell you what. I know a thing or two about being an underdog. In the biggest
01:15:38game in the world for us we were 18 point underdogs. 18 point underdogs. But looky here.
01:15:50I'll tell you what fellas. There's one thing I ever learned from football. It's that you
01:15:55never ever give up. No matter what happens out there tonight you don't give up. Look
01:16:03at me man. I came from a small town just like you guys are coming from. We won the
01:16:09world championship. The Super Bowl. Because we believed in ourselves. Don't give up. Believe
01:16:18in yourselves and you can do it. All right guys this power heads. Father? Heavenly Father
01:16:30watch over us. Protect us from injury. And give us strength. Give me some points on special
01:16:38teams. Amen. Coach D'Antonio did a fantastic job this season but Hoover's coach Marlowe
01:16:46has six first team all-conference players including his stellar quarterback John Handa
01:16:51III. Aquinas is really gonna need a gut check just to prove that they even belong on the
01:16:56same field with these Vikings Sam. Well we're about to find out just moments away from kickoff
01:17:01as the teams take the field for tonight's coin toss. Little Bob Birkin. You're dead.
01:17:08You just don't know it yet. We'll see. Don't even look at her farm boy. You know you already
01:17:17lost her. You just don't know it. Heads. Defer. Hoover wins the toss and they have elected to kick.
01:17:29Well the winning is already begun.
01:17:44And the ball is in the air and we are underway. Finley fields the ball at the
01:17:48four. Looks for a lane. Makes a cut and is brought down at the 18-yard line. That lane
01:17:54turned into a wall awfully fast Sam. Number 12 Bobby Burkett leads his offense onto the field
01:17:59for their first possession. Number 84 star receiver Ben Napier lines up wide to the left.
01:18:05I think Burkett's gonna have to toss that potato tonight Sam or he's gonna get mashed by this
01:18:10Hoover defense. Napier goes into motion and it's a pitch shot. Napier blasted by a Hoover defender.
01:18:22The ball was loose and Hoover recovers at the nine-yard line. I'm gonna tell you Napier looks nervous.
01:18:27I mean that linebacker was in the backfield like someone waiting at a baggage claim.
01:18:35Handon brings his team to the line of scrimmage behind his massive offensive line.
01:18:40I don't think one of these offensive road graders is under 260 pounds. Single back, single back.
01:18:46This is gonna be a whole lot easier than I thought.
01:18:54Handon takes the snap. He drops back and hits his tight end for about five yards
01:18:59right over the middle. That's his cousin Bart Handon and you know these two have hooked up
01:19:03for 14 touchdowns this season.
01:19:14Handon fakes a handoff, rolls out to the left and walks into the end zone untouched.
01:19:21Are you kidding me? I can't believe that. They need Bobby Burkett to play both sides of the field.
01:19:25Is that it? Last week you were anti-Burkett. He's the best player out there. I wish he would marry
01:19:29my daughter. Oh if he married your daughter, please make room for Michelle. Would you? Hey
01:19:33play smart, play tough. Yes sir. Hey how you doing? Good. How are they doing? Yeah not so good right now.
01:19:42After a short pass to Napier, Aquinas is looking at third and seven.
01:19:46Number 24 Davian Taylor has lined up to the left. Burkett takes the snap.
01:19:51Taylor runs it down and in. Burkett throws it.
01:19:54Incomplete. Would have been a first down. Well it hit him in a bad spot. Right in the hands.
01:20:01Davian Taylor, a transfer this year to St. Thomas Aquinas should have really made that catch. Well
01:20:06you know he's shown flashes of big play potential all season, but it's drops like this that have
01:20:11been an issue. And if Aquinas doesn't figure something out, this could get very ugly very fast.
01:20:24Yes!
01:20:29Hoover's defense has been suffocating. Reggie Streeter has been all over the field. I mean
01:20:35he's going through them like they're particle boards. Oh that's why they call him buzzsaw.
01:20:45Hammond is feeling it now. He hits his tight end for the third touchdown of the game. This is where
01:20:50you're seeing the difference in size and speed between division one and division four teams. I
01:20:56mean I'm happy for this game, but this is a complete mismatch. Another dropped pass by
01:21:05Davian Taylor. Burkett's got to figure something out. Man, man, come on man. You got to get open.
01:21:12I know, but I'm trying. I got no room. Look, I know the devil team you out there. Just find a
01:21:16spot, okay? Just just throw it long. I'll be there, all right? Aquinas is looking at a second and three
01:21:22and down 21 to nothing.
01:21:30Yellow 89. Burkett takes the best. Looks to his left at Napier who makes a great cut and
01:21:38hits him on the slant. Napier takes it in for a touchdown.
01:21:46All right, St. Thomas is lining up for the extra point.
01:21:54Ball is snapped and Hoover blocks the kick.
01:22:02And it is halftime here at the Game of Champions.
01:22:08I'm pleased to welcome Hall of Famer Joe Namath into the broadcast booth.
01:22:13Joe, thanks so much for coming in today. How you doing? Oh, man, I'm happy to be here, Sam.
01:22:17I understand that you and Coach DeAntonio, you guys go back quite a ways, don't you?
01:22:22Well, I've known Vincent since he was a pipsqueak, and I'll tell you what, when he called, man,
01:22:26there's no way I was going to miss this. You think they're going to be able to get back into
01:22:30this thing at all? You know, I was a quarterback for a while, and I know part of the job is
01:22:34instilling confidence in your team. I can tell you I got through to these guys. I looked them
01:22:39in the eyes, and I know they believe in themselves. Well, it may take a little bit more than that.
01:22:46Yeah, well, never underestimate the heart. This team's not going to go away. The Knights are
01:22:50going to be in this game to the last whistle. All right, there you have it. Legendary quarterback
01:22:56Joe Namath. He believes St. Thomas can get back into this thing in the second half.
01:23:01And they're playing dirty out in the rift. I don't want to hear that. Nobody cares who
01:23:05cheats you. Whoever makes the most plays wins. Defense, 11 men tackle the ball. Ends and backs.
01:23:12I need you to fight your routes hard, even when I don't call your number.
01:23:16You're going to be telling this story 20 years from now to your kids. How do you want it to end?
01:23:22Bring it in. Pack of germs. Control the line now.
01:23:27Come on, come on. You guys got to savor this. One, two, three, Knights!
01:23:35After just tuning in, the Knights are down 21 to 6, despite a great talk by
01:23:56legendary quarterback Joe Namath. Well, you know, Joe Namath could be on that field tonight
01:24:01playing for the Knights. It would still be 21 to 6. Hoover is that good.
01:24:06It's third and short as Handan lines up under center.
01:24:14He hands off to Wauer, who is met at the line of scrimmage by Jordan Kroger.
01:24:18Aquinas is finally getting some pressure on Handan.
01:24:23They are three divisions lower than us. You are the champions. Let's prove it. Yeah.
01:24:30Bring it in. Yeah. We got to take out Big Mac so we can get to Burkitt once and for all.
01:24:38What do you want me to do about it? Fat Boy's got a temper. Like the Fuse.
01:24:50Burkett takes the snap, drops back, and fires to Namath for incomplete. That should have been a
01:24:55late hit. I don't see a flag. You better stay down if you know what's good for you.
01:25:01Oh, Big Mac. Is that all you got, boy? Come on, show me what you got. Hey, Justin, keep your head.
01:25:11What are you looking at, ref? Let's go. Oh, Big Boy.
01:25:18Don't touch my cousin. Little psycho off me. Stay down, bully. That can't be legal.
01:25:24Got your back, cuz. Now this is a first. A holder has been ejected from a game for fighting. All
01:25:31140 pounds of it. Show these guys what we're made of. Well, the Knights are definitely playing like
01:25:38a different team this half. You know, they really are, Sam. I'm glad to see them playing with some
01:25:42hard fight. Bobby Burkett hits Napier on the green. Oh, man. Justin Mack just knocked Buzzsaw.
01:25:51And Napier takes it in for the touchdown.
01:25:59Tandem takes the snap, and Kroger gets into the backfield to bat the ball away.
01:26:05Hoover is lining up for a 41-yard field goal. The kick is up and good, giving the Vikings an 11-point
01:26:12lead with 434 left to look at. Rolls out to the left. Frieder has it.
01:26:21Hey, man. You hit like 10-year-old girl.
01:26:24Well, the Knights have narrowed the score to four now. It's 24-20. And you know what?
01:26:43Neither team has a timeout left, so buckle your seatbelts, folks. We may be actually having a
01:26:49game of champions after all. I write 23-7. I write 23-7. One-on-one. Ready? Well, with 136 left
01:26:56of the game and the clock is running, Hoover has a second down and six, still up by four points.
01:27:04Tandem takes the snap and gives it to his running back, who is stopped for two by Jordan Kroger.
01:27:11They convert. We're done. We need the ball back. Jailhouse.
01:27:13Apache! Apache! Ready? It's third and four with another shot at a first down.
01:27:22Tandem is in no hurry as the clock continues to wind down. Now, you know,
01:27:25if the Hoover Vikings get this first down, the hot dog is out of the bun.
01:27:29Ready! Ready! Hut! Hut! Tandem fakes a handoff. He rolls right. The defenders convert and Tandem
01:27:39flights. Wait a minute. He's short. It looks like Hoover is going to have to put the football away.
01:27:45In the first half, Tandem would have run right through those guys. My, my, my. How things have
01:27:49changed. Well, there's no way to stop the clock and the Knights have a long field to go. The ball
01:27:56was snapped and the punt is away. Finley calls for the fair catch. He steps away as the ball lands
01:28:01inside the five. No! That's a touchback. Wow. Hoover almost pinned the Knights inside the one.
01:28:06Then the cheese would have been off the pizza. Well, and now St. Thomas has one last possession
01:28:11to go. They've got to drive 80 yards without any timeouts. Coach, coach. Twins right, 89 wide flat.
01:28:20Hey, 12 on me.
01:28:25They're not going to be able to stop the clock. They've got to throw.
01:28:29Prevent! Prevent! Prevent! Aquinas lines up and faces Hoover with seven defensive backs.
01:28:37They're going to take no chances at giving up this long pass play. Red, 22! Red, 22! Set hut!
01:28:45Burgett takes the snap. It's a draw play to Finley from the 20 to the 30. Wait a minute, wait a minute.
01:28:50No, no, to the 40 now. Across midfield, out of bounds at the Hoover 43. Now that's a very
01:28:56gutsy call by D'Antonio. I'm actually starting to love this guy. Aquinas, to me! Quick, quick, let's go!
01:29:04All right, everybody in the stadium knows we're going to Napier. They've been double and tripling
01:29:08them all night, all right? So we're going to use you as a decoy. We run a backside fly to Damian,
01:29:12who is going to make a play. O-line, expect all kinds of pressure. Give it to me, man.
01:29:17I'll get loose, coach, I swear. He's our guy, coach.
01:29:19He's good, he can do it. He ain't got no time. All right, we go Firebird. We worked on it all year,
01:29:28now it's time to execute. Let's go! Well, the Knights trail by four, no timeouts left,
01:29:40and 47 yards away from Paydirt. Their biggest enemy right now is the clock.
01:29:50Believe in yourselves, believe in your team. Don't give up,
01:30:02believe in yourselves, and you can do it! 21 to Mike, 21 to Mike!
01:30:07Black, 77! Black, 77! Set, hike!
01:30:30Napier is covered. Burkett rolls left. Taylor breaks his route and turns upfield.
01:30:36Burkett throws it deep. He's going to risk it all on Taylor.
01:30:40Oh, Taylor catches it! Taylor catches it! Touchdown! And with no time on the clock,
01:31:07no time on the clock, St. Thomas wins. Jamie and Taylor have just made the biggest catch of his
01:31:13career, and we finally have our answer to who the best team in Starr County is. Yes, we do, Sam. What
01:31:20a game!
01:31:38Hey, Burkett!
01:31:44Good game.
01:31:50Travesty.
01:31:53Renee, you should be with John. I don't think so. I'm not asking. Don't talk to my daughter like
01:31:59that. You remember you're speaking to Steven, or come Monday you and I will have a conversation
01:32:04that you are not going to like. I bet you're wondering who leaked that information to the
01:32:09newspaper. It was me, and I won't be in to work on Monday, or any other day.
01:32:26I'm proud of us. You did it, Pop. You did it. I'm proud of you. I love you, Mom.
01:32:31Mommy!
01:32:38I'm liking this new invention, Bill. You've been busy. I got a lot of ideas up here.
