00:00Our top story today though is Hurricane Beryl barreling down in the Caribbean as an extremely
00:06dangerous hurricane this morning. All right the latest on the powerful storm it is moving now
00:11just about 30 miles north of the island of Tobago and it's moving towards St. Vincent
00:17in the Grenadines as well as Grenada and it is strengthening a little bit.
00:23That it is. AccuWeather was more than 24 hours ahead of all other known sources in producing
00:29that eyepath which was beating out the National Hurricane Center and that's a potentially
00:34life-saving forecast for the track map of Beryl which conveys the storm becoming a hurricane
00:39impacting the Caribbean this week and that's part of our goal to help keep you safer and provide
00:43you the most advanced notice so that you can make the best decisions for you and your family.
00:47This storm though like you said major hurricane very powerful still and will have more impacts
00:52beyond just the next few hours. There's the view from Aruba at this point in time it is quite
00:58quiet and they will miss out on the worst of this storm it goes to the north it is somewhat of a
01:02compact storm and we will be discussing that among other things with our hurricane expert that's who's
01:09joining me right now AccuWeather lead hurricane expert Alex Da Silva and Alex what can we say
01:14about this storm because we've seen some changes just with this most recent update at 8 a.m.
01:19We absolutely have the hurricane hunters are flying around in this storm right now and we just
01:23had the 8 a.m. eastern advisory come out from the national hurricane center the hurricane hunters
01:28have found category 4 winds yet again with inside Beryl right now as they've been flying around this
01:34morning so the upgrade has been made the storm has moved from a category 3 to once again yet a
01:39category 4 hurricane as it's barreling down on some of those islands down there in the lesser
01:44Antilles so that is the extreme concern only a few hours left last minute preparations must be
01:50underway at this point and beyond that this storm is kind of an interesting one because you mentioned
01:56that eyewall replacement structure and that's had some impacts on the physical shape of this storm
02:01too it certainly has these very powerful hurricanes undergo what we call an eyewall replacement cycle
02:07so essentially a new eyewall will actually form outside of the the main eyewall and essentially
02:13then it will choke the inner eyewall out and temporarily you'll get some weakening in the
02:17storm and that's what we saw yesterday this was a category 4 overnight it became a category 3
02:22during that eyewall replacement cycle now that that eyewall replacement cycle has been completed
02:27we typically see a bigger eyewall the winds expand outwards as you can see on this graphic here the
02:33the rain shield has expanded outward now that the eyewall replacement cycle has been completed
02:38and also the winds are starting to come back up this is back to a category 4 hurricane right now
02:43getting ready to cross the islands here in the next couple of hours and then it'll work its way
02:48through the caribbean and once it gets into the middle of the caribbean there's still some
02:52question marks with the actual track of this so the eyepath officially taking it towards the yucatan
02:57but at this point there's more dependent uh with this storm and that includes uh what's going to
03:03be over the u.s at that time yeah i think we're pretty highly confident at this point that over
03:07the next couple of days at least through mid to late week this thing's going to be taking a general
03:11northwestern path following an area of high pressure shoving it essentially in that direction
03:16so pretty confident there that it'll stay south of jamaica and move towards the yucatan peninsula
03:20now as we go into next weekend that's where the question marks arise can that high pressure stay
03:26strong if that high pressure stays strong this thing will just get shoved west into mexico and
03:30will keep the u.s away from any impacts however if that high pressure weakens just a little bit
03:35that can allow the system to turn a little bit more northwest and could bring the system a little
03:40closer to texas so we have a lot to watch here over the next couple of days and throughout the
03:44week um but either way very gusty winds coming through the caribbean uh pretty big impacts for
03:49the yucatan peninsula by the end of the week and real quickly i just want to point out there is a
03:54one more set up behind this so these islands might not have much of a break for us yeah
03:59unfortunately not you know we're seeing another storm potentially coming now the good news is
04:03we don't think that this is going to be a hurricane or any kind of major threat however
04:07with the islands just being impacted uh by barrel uh this tropical rainstorm will be coming through
04:12much of the same areas and it just won't take much to cause a lot of problems we think that
04:16rain will be the primary uh impact from this storm as it's likely to remain fairly weak in nature
04:22however we're concerned about mudslides and heavy rainfall as this will cross the islands
04:27uh wednesday into thursday aki weather lead hurricane expert alex de silva thank you again
04:32for joining us on aki weather early
