00:00We should not neglect the health of our mouth and teeth because one of the common issues that many are facing is Temporomandibular Disorders, which affects our mouth or around the Temporomandibular Joint.
00:18If so, and to give us more information about that, we will be joined by Dr. Rosana Miliar Barrera. Good morning and welcome to Rise and Shine Pilipinas, Doc.
00:30Yes, good morning everybody.
00:32Good morning to all of us.
00:35We are talking about TMJ or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder.
00:42A blessed morning indeed to all of us. Thank you for joining us, Dr. Barrera, Diane, and Audrey.
00:47Alright, Doc, what is Temporomandibular Disorders and how does it affect an individual?
00:55Yes, before we define what TMJ really means, let us explain the easiest terminology.
01:08When you say Temporomandibular, our lower jaw is called mandibular.
01:16Temporomandibular means the side of the skull.
01:21Temporomandibular means the side of the skull.
01:28It is responsible for moving backward, forward, right, and left.
01:36When you say TMJ, it acts like a sliding hinge connecting your jaw bone.
01:43A hinge joint that connects the jaw bone to the skull.
01:49It really plays a crucial role in the proper functioning of the jaw and the overall health of our oral and facial region.
02:00Temporomandibular Disorders is a condition that is related to the dysfunction of TMJ that is connected to our jaw bone.
02:18To understand the easiest way for our viewers,
02:26always remember that when you feel pain, it is a signal that there is something wrong in your body.
02:36Here in our TMJ, the first thing you will do is to hold this near your ears.
02:44And then slightly, you have to open your mouth.
02:50You will feel something moving here, right?
02:53Yes.
02:54If you feel pain and you hear clicking, you should get consulted immediately.
03:05It's right and left.
03:07That's our TMJ.
03:09It's like this, right?
03:13When you open your mouth and you hear a clicking sound,
03:18it means there is something wrong.
03:28Did you feel it?
03:30Yes, I felt the movement.
03:33How important is it for our viewers to observe this?
03:37For example, if we feel pain in the connecting spot of our jawline,
03:43how important is it that this is just a normal condition?
03:47Or does it really need to be checked by specialists?
03:52That's a good question.
03:56If it's tolerable, it means that if you feel pain, especially clicking,
04:04you should consult a dentist immediately.
04:08Because it might lead to more problems.
04:13Like, instead of just feeling pain here, you may feel pain in your ears.
04:20If you feel pain in your ears, you may feel pain in your ears.
04:25If you feel pain in your ears, you may feel pain in your ears.
04:29So, instead of just feeling pain here, you may feel pain in your ears.
04:35And it can get worse if you don't address it.
04:40Your upper back and legs may feel pain.
04:43Imagine, all of our joints, muscles, and ligaments are inter-correlated.
04:49They are connected to each other.
04:53So, you really need to consult a dentist immediately.
04:58Doc, what kind of pain do you feel when you have a problem?
05:02Is it like a sore throat?
05:04Or does it become a continuous pain?
05:07Or once you open your mouth, what kind of pain is it?
05:11So, you really need to consult a dentist.
05:15It depends.
05:16Sometimes, it's sharp and dull.
05:18Sometimes, it doesn't go away.
05:20Especially when it's continuous.
05:22And then, there are instances that are mild.
05:26When you feel it now, it's not just sometimes, but it's tolerable.
05:31So, you can put an E-hot and cold compress.
05:38As long as it doesn't affect your daily life.
05:41Like chewing, biting, and speaking.
05:47But, I keep saying that if the pain is not tolerable,
05:55and it's been going on for more than weeks,
06:01you really need to consult a dentist.
06:06But, if you haven't consulted a dentist yet,
06:11you can take paracetamol or other over-the-counter
06:18non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines temporarily.
06:25But, we shouldn't continue these medicines for more than 10 days.
06:35It should last for a maximum of 3 days.
06:38Okay.
06:41Doctor, how can we diagnose TMD?
06:45And, what are the common ways for specialists to treat it?
06:52I will discuss the complete signs and symptoms first.
07:01First of all, there is pain in our jaw.
07:07Then, you have difficulty in opening and closing your mouth.
07:12And, sometimes, we have pain in our jaw.
07:16And, it also hurts our face, neck, and ears.
07:22And then, sometimes, we have dental issues, malocclusion, and malfunctions.
07:28And then, sometimes, it also affects our genetics.
07:35Ah, okay.
07:36Yes, it affects our genetics.
07:39And then, it also affects our hormonal changes.
07:43And, sometimes, when we are in the wrong posture,
07:48when we are snouched, and we are not aware,
07:51it also affects us.
07:54Because, when our spinal cord is not proper,
07:59all the weight goes to our head.
08:03So, it is also affected.
08:05And then, it is also a problem.
08:08Stress.
08:09When you say stress, it is different.
08:12There is stress because, for example,
08:17at night, you have night grinding,
08:20or the so-called burp season.
08:22So, at night, you can hear it.
08:24Maybe, you can hear the sounds.
08:27When I was young, it was like that.
08:29It's like you're biting your own teeth.
08:31There's a burp season.
08:33Yes.
08:34So, if you have something like that, don't do it.
08:38So, the dentist will customize a mouth guard,
08:43or a night guard, that you will wear during the night.
08:48You will sleep.
08:49Because, if we don't have a night guard,
08:53it will scratch.
08:54So, it will reduce the amount of enamel.
08:57So, it also causes malfunction.
09:00So, if there is no proper alignment,
09:03occlusion, or the biting of our teeth,
09:08so, there are dimensions, vertical,
09:12it also causes TMD, TMJ diseases.
09:17You can feel and notice the symptoms.
09:19So, it's better to go to an expert of your dentist.
09:22Alright.
09:23Lastly, Doc, we heard that you have a special professional licensure examination
09:27in your organization.
09:29Tell us more about this, Doc.
09:33Yes.
09:34I've been an OFW in Doha, Qatar for 19 years.
09:40So, we have the, what you call,
09:42professional, Filipino professional organization in Qatar.
09:47So, the Filipino Dentist Organization is under that PPOQ.
09:51And then, after this special professional licensure,
09:56for example, in the Middle East,
09:59including Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, UAE,
10:04it's three days, June 16, 17, 18.
10:08So, it's designed for OFWs
10:13who didn't have a chance to have a board exam here in the Philippines.
10:17They went abroad for, you know, for a greener pasture.
10:21So, it's an opportunity for other OFWs
10:25because it's also good that we have a license, right?
10:30So, our lives will change.
10:33Instead of being underboard,
10:37you will benefit a lot and you will be more competitive.
10:41So, that's it.
10:42So, Doc, what are you going to take for the licensure exam?
10:47Special SPLE that is under PRC.
10:52So, instead, it's funny because instead of the underboard going home to the Philippines,
10:58the PRC is the one we sent there.
11:01So, that's what's good about our organization
11:05and it's a big help for me as the president of the Filipino Dentist Association in Qatar.
11:14Congratulations, ma'am.
11:15Okay, well, thank you very much for giving us the information about
11:19Temporomandibular Disorder, Dr. Sana Miliar Barrera.
11:23Thank you, Doc. Good morning.
11:25Thank you.
