00:00If you don't have money for reading, why do you still do it?
00:03In a workshop in Marikina, you will be taught how to make your own reading.
00:08But let's make it social!
00:12This is called rug tufting.
00:14It was just a hobby of TJ, but now it's a business.
00:20Our minimum is 5 digits, but it can reach 6 digits during peak season.
00:30Here in Marikina, there is a workshop where you can experience making your own reading.
00:35But it's not your ordinary reading.
00:38This is a rug that has a design that depends on what you want.
00:44This is a social reading, for example.
00:47A date idea, a bonding of friends, or a fun activity for the kids.
00:54Rug tufting uses a gun to put the colored yarn on the fabric
01:00to make the design of the rug that you chose.
01:06It's very curious, so let's try it!
01:14This is what I like to do because I can sew.
01:17I can do it!
01:20If I can't sew on the machine, I'll just do it here.
01:29It's like an action star.
01:35It's tiring, the gun is heavy.
01:38It's a good exercise for the arms.
01:43I don't have a yarn!
01:47I'm happy.
01:48It's like you want to have a house like this.
01:53My classmate today in the workshop is Melrose, a designer.
01:57The design that she chose is the face of her furbaby, Tina.
02:02Because I miss her already, and this is my way to remember our memories together.
02:08She loves to take care of her baby because he was born last month.
02:13Tina came to me during COVID, during the pandemic, four years ago.
02:19So, this rug has helped me divert my attention.
02:26And also, because I'm doing this for Tina,
02:29it brings back our memories together,
02:32before she passed away.
02:34Maybe this is also my way to not be so sad,
02:40because Tina is still my inspiration in making rugs.
02:49There!
02:50You know, she's happy, she's cheerful.
02:54You know, she's happy, she's cheerful.
02:59And you can feel the stability of your grip,
03:05your focus, because you're supposed to follow different colors,
03:10so you shouldn't hit it.
03:12So, you're focused, you're concentrated,
03:15and the firmness of your grip here,
03:18because the gun is a bit heavy, it's not light.
03:21Let's finish this.
03:23That's enough questions.
03:26The rugs that we make, you'll see later.
03:35During the pandemic, I didn't do anything.
03:38I just watched YouTube or TikTok.
03:41So, I saw someone doing rug topping there.
03:44Then, I got interested, and I bought a set.
03:47That's why it became my hobby during the pandemic.
03:50And then, I also saw a video on YouTube
03:55that there's a workshop similar to this in other countries.
03:59So, we thought, why not bring it here to the Philippines?
04:04From hobby to business, real quick.
04:07July 2023, TJ officially opened the business.
04:12When I first tried rug topping, it was too expensive to start,
04:16because the whole set was too expensive.
04:19So, we thought, what if there's also a workshop
04:22where you can try it for cheap,
04:24and you don't have to pursue it,
04:27it's like a once-in-a-lifetime experience
04:29where you don't have to hope for a big one.
04:33The problem is, there's not enough people in the place they built.
04:38Our place is not that accessible.
04:40We're in Marikina, so we really have to distance ourselves
04:43compared to other workshops in the mall,
04:46or in Pubao or Gikna,
04:49which are very accessible to people.
04:52So, as a solution,
04:53they're trying other ways to make a profit.
04:58We're not just staying in a business model or source of income.
05:03For example, if there's no customer or student,
05:05we still have income.
05:07We're customizing rugs,
05:09chairs made of rugs, mirrors,
05:12and other types of rugs that can be sold.
05:17But even if you have to pay for a place,
05:19there's still a lot of people coming
05:21to try the rug tufting experience.
05:24Our target for a week is 20 to 30,
05:28and if it's the peak season,
05:30it can reach 30 to 50.
05:32For example, valentines, birth months.
05:37That's why it's profitable.
05:39We can reach, if it's the normal season,
05:42not peak, 5 digits a month.
05:45Or if it's the peak season,
05:46we can reach 6 digits a month net.
05:50Before, I was doing everything,
05:52and that mindset was wrong.
05:54So now, I'm dedicating it to other people.
05:56And then, it's just time management.
05:59Like, in the morning, at work,
06:01and then at night,
06:02that's when I focus on business-related things.
06:07Because of TJ's hard work,
06:09their life is easier now.
06:11We were able to fund our house.
06:13I was able to support my siblings,
06:15my parents, and my grandparents.
06:19Hello, I'm Dennis,
06:21and today, I will teach you
06:23how to make a rug here in Okra.
06:26First, we'll look for a design
06:28and we'll draw it on our canvas.
06:31When tufting,
06:32you need to put pressure on the barrel
06:34so that the yarn sticks well to the fabric.
06:38When the design is full of yarn,
06:40we'll put glue
06:41so that the yarns won't be scratched.
06:44When the glue is dry,
06:45we'll put spray adhesive
06:47and we'll stick the backing cloth
06:49that will serve as the bottom of the rug.
06:52For the finishing touches,
06:54we'll cut the fabric
06:55and we'll iron the excess yarn.
06:58And here it is,
06:59we now have the finished product.
07:04The workshop is worth Php 2,999
07:08up to Php 9,499
07:11depending on the size of the rug you're going to make.
07:14Do you want to see the rug I made?
07:19While Melrose...
07:25What do you think, Kapuso?
07:27Is it outdated?
07:29Yes, it is highly recommended
07:31especially for people like me who are fair-parents
07:33who tend to look for outlets
07:36in a way that you're making memories,
07:39new memories for your dog
07:41that even though they're no longer here in the world,
07:44there are souvenirs that you can make for them.
07:49You should make your business a passion of yours
07:52or it's better if you turn it into a hobby
07:54and then turn it into a business
07:56because if you do that,
07:58you won't feel like you're working
08:00and then you'll be happy doing that.
08:06When you think of starting a business,
08:08start with what you like
08:10because you never know,
08:11other people might like it too.
08:36you
