00:00Mr. Chairman, I move to strike the last word.
00:05The gentlelady is recognized.
00:07Thank you.
00:08I am not surprised that the majority has taken this ridiculous fight with the executive branch to a private citizen.
00:18They're bullies.
00:20Mr. Swanitzer is a writer and director, not a political figure.
00:26And his attorney has repeatedly explained that Mr. Swanitzer is not in a position to determine what materials he can share with this committee,
00:37especially when the executive branch has asserted significant interest in this material.
00:45Going after a private citizen who is now caught between two branches of government is not only legally bankrupt,
00:54but also an unjustified abuse of power.
00:59Mr. Swanitzer set out to write a memoir in President Biden's name about the death of his son, Beau.
01:08Nothing more.
01:10He's now caught in a legal battle in which he has no stake,
01:15all because the majority on this committee is desperate to get its hands on any material related to President Biden
01:24in order to justify its relentless and fruitless investigation into anything and everything related to this administration.
01:35Congress is supposed to work for the people,
01:39for people like Mr. Swanitzer, who, in addition to his work with President Biden on his memoir,
01:45is working on a documentary about the creation of the Transcontinental Railroad.
01:52Instead, the majority is attacking the people, the very people it is supposed to protect and represent.
02:01I refuse to be associated with this attack on a private citizen,
02:06and I refuse to be associated with the members of this committee who are leading this charge.
02:12And as the ranking member said, this has been timed for the debate.
02:20It has been timed for the election.
02:23It is nothing more than a political stunt, and it is an abuse of power.
02:30Thank you, and I yield back.
