00:00What's going on everyone? Mike Kadlec and Taylor Kyles here for CLNS Media on Patriots Press Pass Patriots Daily Special Edition
00:06where we take a look at Patriots defensive tackle Dupont Godshaw, his apparent hold-in that's been going on in the preseason with him,
00:13his cryptic tweet last night about where his contract stands at, and what the Patriots should do moving forward with him and the defensive
00:20tackle room. Before we get into it, a reminder,
00:22we are powered by PrizePix and GameTime. PrizePix is America's number one fantasy app.
00:27If you head there now, you can use code CLNS for a first deposit match bonus up to $100 and GameTime,
00:33number one ticketing app. Head there, $20 off your first purchase with code CLNS. Go down to Fenway, head to,
00:40no, you can do, you can go to Fenway,
00:42use GameTime, get some tickets, then hop on PrizePix and
00:46maybe have a little fun with some of the Red Sox players in there.
00:49So even though basketball and hockey is over with, you can still have fun with PrizePix and GameTime with the Red Sox during the
00:55baseball season. All right, Taylor, let's get into it because like I said, Godshaw, a defensive tackle who
01:01held sort of a hold-in, as what you would call it, down in Foxborough during the offseason program.
01:07Godshaw is headed into the final year of a two-year $20 million extension.
01:12He signed in 2022 after originally signing on a two-year $15 million contract in 2021 when they went on that huge spree.
01:20So kind of looking for another pay bump here.
01:23It's worth noting that he has no guaranteed money,
01:25so he may just be looking for a little bit of a bump in guarantees, what have you.
01:30The Patriots have been a team this offseason that
01:33has rewarded their own and has rewarded their hard workers, guys who they brought in, whether it be
01:39draft picks, whether it be guys who, again,
01:41they signed in that 2021 spree and have done well, like your Borns and your Henrys, and then they've rewarded them with extensions.
01:47Godshaw still waiting on it.
01:49And again, clearly a guy who's looking forward, because not only did he hold in in the offseason program,
01:54but last night took to Twitter when asked about his contract status and tweeted the following.
01:59Hopefully we can get something done that's fair to me and my team before camp starts. I love New England.
02:04I would love to retire here,
02:05but it has to make sense for us. What I do on the football field, in the trenches most of the time, doesn't show
02:10on the stat sheet, but turn on the film and you will see it if you know ball.
02:13I'd love to finish my career here in New England, but it has to make sense to me and my team.
02:17There's the tweet right there.
02:18If you didn't see it, you can win up to 100 times your money on prize picks with as little as four correct picks.
02:24You can turn $10 into $1,000.
02:27With the NBA finals over, the hoops action doesn't stop on prize picks.
02:31Women's basketball is just heating up with stars like Kaitlin Clark and Angel Reese
02:35looking to make names for themselves alongside greats like Breonna Stewart and Asia Wilson.
02:40You can earn up to 100 times your cash watching them ball out.
02:43Prize picks is available in more than 30 states across the country,
02:46including California, Texas and Georgia.
02:49I made my first $10 deposit and received an instant $10 bonus.
02:53If you have the skills, you can play for a shot at turning your $10 into $1,000.
02:58I've got Kaitlin Clark for more than three and a half three points made
03:01and Breonna Stewart for more than 23 points.
03:04For baseball, I've got Kyle Schwarber for more than nine hitter fantasy score
03:08and Bryce Miller for more than four pitcher strikeouts.
03:11Download the app today and use the code CLNS for a first deposit match up to $100.
03:16That's code CLNS for a first deposit match up to $100.
03:20Prize picks. Pick more, pick less.
03:23It's that easy.
03:27So again, Godshaw seemingly unhappy with his contract and looking for a pay bond.
03:31So, Taylor, let's get right into it.
03:33What do you make of this drama?
03:36I know you don't like drama, so we won't use the word drama,
03:38but it's kind of a bump in the road for Godshaw and his camp
03:41and him with the Patriots moving on into 2024.
03:44I mean, it makes sense when you play nose tackle,
03:47that is one of the most physical positions in the football.
03:50There's always the chance of injury.
03:51So I'd understand for a guy who's 30 years old
03:54would want some guarantees and to know that he's going to make money
03:57just in case he does get injured.
03:58You'd think the Patriots would take care of him even if something happened.
04:00But this is a business you truly never know.
04:03And like you mentioned, the Patriots are trying to reward the people
04:06who have done well for them
04:07and who they think are foundational pieces for this team.
04:10Now, of course, that's going to open the floodgates.
04:12Stroud may acknowledge that now there's a lot of people who want new deals.
04:16Right. That's it.
04:17And what Devon, what Devon Godshaw has done is very valuable.
04:20He's been one of the best run stopping interior defensive lineman in the NFL
04:25when he got the extension a couple of years back.
04:27Bill Belichick actually did say that he was one of the best
04:31defensive tackles in the league.
04:32So his value is there. He's right.
04:35If you look at stats, they don't really jump out.
04:37Like if you look at specifically run defense, he has tackles and things like that.
04:41But for a nose, it's hard to really quantify that with pure numbers
04:46because there's the fact that sometimes teams won't want to run at you
04:49because they know, hey, if we're going to run inside zone or duo
04:52with no intention of bounce it or anything like that,
04:54we're going to be in trouble
04:55because this guy's going to hold his ground and he's going to make the tackle.
04:59So he's absolutely right.
05:00Not really a position that's easy to quantify.
05:03That said, you can't give everybody more money.
05:06Now, we don't know if he wants an extension necessarily.
05:08He said he wants to retire here.
05:10So you think there is some desire to have a longer contract.
05:14And obviously, again, the guarantees,
05:16maybe they can find some kind of middle ground where that works out.
05:18But we have to look back at the Lawrence guy situation
05:21where the team decided to move on from him.
05:23He was projected to have a robust market.
05:26He's still on the street.
05:27So that felt like especially when they replaced him seemingly with Armand Watts,
05:32who is a bit smaller than Lawrence guy, not quite as stout as a run defender.
05:36Lawrence guy is one of the best run defenders in football.
05:38He's an absolute monster.
05:39But he gave you almost nothing when it came to pass rush,
05:42other than just condensing the pocket.
05:43Now, Armand Watts can get you pressure much more consistently than guy could.
05:47Although there is a bit of a drop off in run defense.
05:50I think he's still fine there.
05:51It's not a weakness or anything, but he's not LG.
05:54Looking at that and maybe what this team might be leaning towards,
05:58like they've been saying they want to have a better pass rush situation,
06:01create more turnovers, all that good stuff.
06:03You look at God, Sean, you say, OK, this is a guy who knows tackles.
06:08Yeah, usually the run first players.
06:09But you have plenty of nose tackles who also contribute as pass rushers.
06:14Devon Dotshot doesn't, even though he does play the majority of downs.
06:17Like if you look at snap counts, he's absolutely a starter.
06:20He's not just a role player, but there's guys on the roster
06:23who I think could slip into that role again.
06:26Dotshot wouldn't be a loss.
06:27He's kind of a monster in the middle.
06:29One of the bigger guys think he's about like three hundred and twenty pounds.
06:32Guys like Daniel Aquale and Jeremiah Farms more like three hundred, three hundred
06:36and ten, not giving you that same stout presence in the middle.
06:40But if you're looking for more pass rush
06:42and you're willing to kind of take a step back on run defense, remember,
06:45this was a pass run defense
06:46that was one of the best run stopping units in the NFL over the past like decade.
06:51I think it was since like 2014.
06:52They had the fewest yards allowed.
06:54That can't always be the metric you go on.
06:57But when you looked at all the metrics, it was pretty clear
06:59they were a fantastic run defense.
07:01If you're willing to go from number one, number two,
07:04it's maybe like 10 or 12, maybe even 15.
07:07In this league, you can get by with a pretty average run defense
07:10as long as you're not getting gashed.
07:12But the interior pass rush outside of Christian Barmore was an issue.
07:15Also, Christian Barmore, a guy who plays plenty of nose tackle in his own right.
07:19So looking at the other guy who I want to cut you off,
07:23they're a guy who plays plenty of nose tackle in his own right.
07:25And like you said, as far as being a pass rusher, like twelve and a half,
07:28twelve and a half sacks for Barmore over the last season, last three seasons,
07:31two and a half for a gotcha.
07:33That's I mean, again, it's one quick and easy step.
07:35But that just shows, you know, the kind of effect
07:37they have in the pass rushing at, excuse me, in terms of the run stock.
07:41No, 100 percent.
07:42So, you know, Christian Barmore at the top of that list.
07:44I think you want him more as a defensive tackle, more than a nose tackle.
07:47But he plays both.
07:49So then you look at what the other options would be.
07:52First one that comes to mind is Daniel Equality was hurt last season.
07:55But he's a guy who I don't think gets enough credit.
07:57People think he's just an interior pass rusher because he's undersized.
08:01I think he's also a good run defender for a guy who is his size.
08:04Now, there were times like against Miami where he is getting pushed around
08:07against double teams.
08:09Not ideal.
08:10But if you get him some one on one matchups,
08:12I think he's a guy who can make tackles for you, who will hold his ground.
08:15He can be stout against double teams.
08:17It's just not really his game.
08:18But again, he also gives you something in the pass rush department.
08:21He's more well rounded.
08:23Then they also have Jeremiah Farms, who I think is really the one
08:26who kind of sets off alarm bells.
08:28If the Patriots and Devon got shot, don't find some kind of middle ground.
08:31He came on kind of towards the end of last season, really flew under the radar
08:36because he had Christian Farmore taking up a lot of attention.
08:39The pass rush wasn't very good, period.
08:41And with run defense, it's kind of hard with you're not
08:43Anthony Jennings or Jabril Peppers to gain a lot of attention.
08:47But he was a dynamic player, gave you some legitimate juice
08:50in the pass rush department, really active with his hands.
08:53He's more explosive
08:54than some of the other interior defenders that they have.
08:57And he's got some explosiveness, which you don't get from a Devon Godshaw.
09:01Again, he is about 300 pounds.
09:03Doesn't give you a ton of size, but he holds his ground.
09:06Well, you didn't see a lot of low lights from Jeremiah Farms,
09:09and he started to play more and more, which Marcus Covington said
09:12was a reflection of how he played in practice and what he was putting on the tape.
09:16So I think Godshaw is a valuable player.
09:19I hope they find a middle ground.
09:20I think he's a really, really well respected and coveted player,
09:23especially in the locker room, but specifically at the heart of that run defense.
09:27But between Equality and Jeremiah Farms, I think they have,
09:31you know, a solid one to punch there if they were looking to replace
09:34some of Devon Godshaw snaps.
09:36Nothing says summer quite like a live baseball game.
09:39And whenever I want to check out a Red Sox game at Fenway, I'm using Game Time,
09:42the best place for last minute deals on tickets.
09:45Game Time is an authorized ticket marketplace for Major League Baseball,
09:49which makes getting tickets faster and easier.
09:51Prices on the Game Time app actually go down the closer it gets to the first pitch
09:55with killer last minute deals, all in prices, views from your seat
09:59and their lowest price guarantee.
10:01Game Time takes the guesswork out of buying MLB tickets.
10:04With Game Time, it's as easy as finding the game you want to attend,
10:08getting a view of the entire stadium to see what prices look like in different areas.

10:16available and the best deals.
10:18You can also get the view from the seat that you pick.
10:21And between their lowest price guarantee, event cancellation protection
10:24and job loss protection, there's really no better option than Game Time.
10:28And with Game Time's lowest price guarantee, the app will actually credit
10:32you 110% of the difference if you find a cheaper ticket elsewhere.
10:37Take the guesswork out of buying MLB tickets with Game Time.

10:46Terms apply.
10:47Again, create an account and redeem code CLNS for $20 off.
10:52Download Game Time today.
10:54Last minute tickets, lowest price guaranteed.
10:57I'm totally with you.
10:58And I looking at the room as a whole as well, like now granted
11:02defensive tackle versus nose tackle kind of your roles on the on the team
11:06can kind of switch up and things like that.
11:07But they've already shelled out all this money to Barmore.
11:10And now somebody else in the same room is kind of like the same type of thing
11:13where you have Barmore locked down and you can go to guys
11:15like you mentioned the quality and farms to kind of, you know, pick up the slack
11:19where if you're missing that on the run defense, Godshaw leaves
11:22that can kind of pick that up.
11:23The other thing I'll note that is that this is a team that we've talked about.
11:28It's sort of getting ready for 2025, right?
11:29Like they're not you know, they're not really trying to win now.
11:33They're not trying to lose.
11:33They're not trying to tank.
11:34But this is a forward looking franchise.
11:37And the oldest guy in that room is a quality at 30.
11:40The next two is teachers wise and Godshaw at 29.
11:43The rest of them, Barmore, Tristan Hill Farms, Armand Watt, Sam,
11:47like all those guys, Keone White, they're all 27 or younger.
11:50They want to build this thing and try and get younger.
11:53So if they can't come to a middle ground with Godshaw,
11:55I don't think they're going to necessarily shell out a huge chunk of change for him
12:00to get him to stay, even if it's again, the middle ground might be something
12:03that Mike Giardi wrote about, which we're going to get to another thing.
12:05He said in a second where you just guarantee him the money on his contract
12:09this year and call it that don't extend them.
12:11Don't pay him off into twenty five, twenty six, et cetera.
12:13Just let him stay on the team and give him his money up front.
12:16So we'll see what happens there.
12:17But I do want to know, too, from Mike Giardi and from Boston Sports Journal.
12:21He wrote the other day that the Patriots reached out to
12:27another well-paid defensive tackle back in March during free agency.
12:31So and he notes, was it foreshadowing their feelings on Godshaw's
12:35playing personality?
12:36Question mark.
12:36Either way, it's a situation that bears monitoring.
12:39So it does bear monitoring.
12:40It's here.
12:41They did reach out to a defensive tackle in free agency.
12:44So maybe they were foreshadowing what they want to do with Godshaw.
12:47They might not want to give them the extension.
12:48They might want to pay him, et cetera.
12:49So let's take a look at sort of where Godshaw lines up
12:54as far as money right now
12:56and what an extension could look like or something along those lines
12:58with the other guys in the in the defensive tackle.
13:01Yeah. So first, just from a Patriots perspective,
13:04so we understand how much Barmore is actually making
13:07and how much he counts specifically against the cap.
13:09He is one of the higher players in that pecking order.
13:12It's Matthew at the top.
13:14Jonathan Jones underneath him.
13:15Two guys you expect to play pretty much every down for you.
13:18And then Devon Godshaw is third, which is a lot for a nose
13:22tackle who really only gives you an impact in the run defense.
13:26Again, he does play enough snaps that he is clearly a starter,
13:29but he's not a guy that you want on the field on third downs
13:32or obvious pass situations.
13:34And then with the guys under him, Michael and when you obviously
13:37every down player
13:38who can be elite as a run defender and pass protector, if used the right way,
13:42then you do Schuster.
13:43We all know that was a mistake.
13:44So, yeah, that number 11.8 million against the cap.
13:47His money isn't guaranteed.
13:48Again, they could cut him and all those things would change.
13:50But it is significant that he's making so much money or counts
13:54so much against the cap,
13:55considering he's really more of a role player
13:57who still does play starting number of snaps and looking at the position.
14:02Now, a couple of guys who did go to other teams,
14:04DJ Reader around the same age, also making around the same money.
14:09He's making 11 million.
14:10Gotcha is making 10.4 million.
14:12And then Sheldon Rankins, who Mark Daniels actually,
14:15you know, connected the Patriots and Rankins.
14:18He's making 12.25.
14:19But he's also more of one more of a three technique,
14:22not really a nose tackle tackle.
14:24He's more of a pass rusher.
14:26So I think if you're looking at, you know, Devon Gotchoff,
14:28he doesn't just want guarantees, but wants a pay bump.
14:31You'd probably be looking at more like Grover Stewart up here.
14:33He's making 13 million.
14:36I don't know. A lot of dough, Taylor.
14:37That's a lot of money.
14:39Yeah. And again, like we said, people are getting paid on this team,
14:42but you have to draw the line somewhere.
14:43And I think a guy who is only a run defender on a team
14:46that wants to improve their pass rush, it's probably a liability
14:49or a guy who could potentially be the line where they say, hey,
14:52we have to stop somewhere.
14:54It's going to be right here again.
14:55The guarantees are one thing, but
14:57I just don't really think he's got a leg to stand on because these guys,
15:01Grover Stewart is older, but he's a really good player.
15:03He's a little more pass rush than I'd say you get from Gotchoff.
15:07So, yeah, just looking at the age of these players
15:09and the amount of money they're making, I think Gotchoff is in the range
15:12that he should be at.
15:12But really, I think the most realistic thing would just say,
15:16hey, we're going to fully guarantee your contract.
15:17They have the cap space
15:19and then maybe see what happens after this season.
15:22Yeah, totally. We shall.
15:23We shall see what happens there, Taylor.
15:25Again, Devon Gotchoff looking for what could be a pay bump.
15:29What could be an extension held out this spring heading into summer tweets
15:32last night that they're looking to get something done.
15:34We have just under a month until training camp starts.
15:36We got those dates today starting up on July 25th, I believe.
15:41So all those I will add all those open to the public so fans can go at their leisure.
15:46Those I tweeted those out earlier.
15:47You can also find it on Patriots.com.
15:49So we'll see what happens with Gotchoff again.
15:51They have about a month to kind of get it done.
15:52Maybe hopefully they don't leak it into training camp,
15:55but definitely a situation to monitor as again, defensive tackle Devon
15:59Gotchoff looks for a pay bump and may look for a contract extension.
16:03Also, that's where we got the numbers.
16:05I should have said, yeah, yeah.
16:06All those numbers, of course.
16:08Yeah. From our friends over at OTC over the gap.
16:10Again, a reminder, we are powered by price picks and game time.
