Sarawak has great potential for power generation from Batang Ai reservoir, says premier

Sarawak has the potential to increase power generation from floating solar to 2,000MW at the Batang Ai hydroelectric plant (HEP) reservoir due to its size, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during his visit to the Batang Ai floating solar farm on Thursday (June 20).

00:00As we all know, Sarawak Energy is now implementing a very important and strategic project
00:15to increase the output of energy that can be renewed through solar power or solar projects.
00:26I have studied it from several angles.
00:31The area of Batang Ai is approximately 8,500 hectares.
00:38And the area used for solar power is only 86 hectares.
00:45Approximately 2% of the entire area of Batang Ai.
00:51So there is already room for us to add more energy generation using solar.
00:59I made my own calculations.
01:03If we use only 60%, 60% of 8,500 hectares,
01:13the potential output of energy through solar is approximately 2 gigawatts, 2,000 megawatts.
01:23And I feel that SAB will do research on this proposal.
01:30And I also feel that by then, the technology will improve, particularly storage.
01:37To store energy, the government will also recognize the Bakun and Murun areas.
01:46Bakun is approximately 500 megawatts.
01:49And Murun is 600 megawatts.
01:53Because we have foreign investors who want to invest in those areas.
02:00We have signed an MOU between Masta, UAE and us.
02:07And they are the only investors who will invest in the Bakun and Murun areas.
02:15When will the project be completed?
02:19October 2020.
02:24October 2024.
02:27Which means we only have 6 months left.
02:30We have 7 months left.
02:337, 8, 9, 10, 14 months.
