AccuWeather's Tony Laubach is in Minnesota, where the potential for severe weather is ramping up.
Transcript
00:00Tony, again, walk us through here, what you're seeing. We're starting to see some development here just off to the north and west of Minneapolis.
00:10Yeah, we're watching a lot of areas. You've been kind of watching, you know, seeing some of the radar that Justin's been showing.
00:15A lot of severe storms really in the northern half of Minnesota. We knew that was going to be the case today.
00:20The reason we didn't go all the way up that far is just lack of logistics. We don't have a lot of roads, a lot of state forests, national forests,
00:26very limited ways to get around, and then tracking those storms across into Wisconsin. We've got the Great Lakes in the way.
00:32Can't really do much about that, but we're going to show you right now, over my shoulder, you kind of see off in the distance there near the Dairy Queen sign,
00:38that little turkey tower that is going up here. That is kind of what is hinting right now as to the areas we're watching south of I-94.
00:45I'm going to show you the radar here. This is the Minneapolis radar, so we're going to be looking a little bit further to the west of Minneapolis here on the very edge of this radar.
00:52You're seeing these little blips that are starting to show up, these little isolated storms that are showing up.
00:57Obviously, we've got the big ones up near Fergus Falls, but as you get a little further south, we're starting to see little specks pop up on the radar.
01:03That is what that cloud I just showed you is kind of hinting at. We're starting to see development a little bit further south of I-94.
01:10If you've been listening to us through the day, I've been talking about us kind of leaning into that potential a little bit of seeing maybe a few isolated storms develop south of I-94.
01:19We're starting to see hints of that happening here. That would start to bring the severe weather threat a little bit further to the south.
01:25Now, we do have that severe thunderstorm watch in effect. Now, this really goes about as far south as St. Cloud and then pretty much the entire northern half of Minnesota.
01:34That goes until 10 o'clock tonight. I'm not so sure that we don't see an additional watch maybe put down a little bit further to the south
01:43if we start to see these storms and other storms that are starting to fire near and just south of the Sioux City, Iowa area.
01:50If we start to see this area kind of take off a little bit, then I would suspect we'll see an additional severe thunderstorm watch posted for you folks down south.
01:57Now, again, areas from St. Cloud up to Duluth, International Falls, you get into northern Wisconsin, and I don't think the folks in Minneapolis are out of the woods.
02:06A lot of these storms that we're seeing fire across western portions of Minnesota, they're going to start to really get organized, and then they're going to actually turn to the south and east.
02:15So, I-94 is northwest to southeast. I think we see a lot of these storms kind of run along and parallel to that.
02:21So, I think folks in Minneapolis, particularly after 8 o'clock, you guys want to have your AccuWeather app ready to rock and roll in case you do start to see warnings.
02:30Tornado threat, I think generally pretty low, Justin, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see some big hail reports, especially early out of some of these storms.
02:38All right, Tony, thanks for that report. Yep, just saw a ping pong ball-sized hail report into the northernmost part of the state.
02:45So, we'll be tracking these storms for you. Thanks again for that report. Stay safe out there.
