00:00Joe, I promised you football today, and I promised that I wouldn't bury it in the last
00:09segment of the show.
00:10So I'm going to now make good on my promises to you, and let's talk about some of these
00:14things that are going on at these quote-unquote mandatory, and I say that very loosely, Joe,
00:20mandatory minicamps that are going on in the NFL this week, as this is really, Joe, kind
00:26of the last week, and then everybody gets about, what, five, six weeks off before they
00:31start showing up to legit training camp and finally getting ready for the 2024 season.
00:37It's almost here, Joe.
00:38Thankfully, we've found a lot of things to take up our time between the Super Bowl and
00:43August to get us ready for football.
00:46I know that it's a little harder for you, but for most of us, we have found some things
00:50that get us all the way back to football.
00:53Let's start with Robert Sala.
00:55Did you see this guy today, Joe?
00:57Let me ask before I play this.
00:58Did you see this clip before I'm about to play it?
01:01No.
01:02So Sala comes in to talk to the press for the first time and immediately starts getting
01:06into who's not there.
01:08This is a mandatory minicamp, so everybody's supposed to be there.
01:13I think there was one name that people were expecting wasn't going to be there, and then
01:18another name that the reporters kind of were a little taken back that he wasn't there.
01:22Let's hear Robert Sala kind of screw the whole thing up, as me and Gabe talked about earlier.
01:26Is Hassan Radek in the tiny minicamp?
01:29No.
01:30So we've got two inexcused absences.
01:33One obviously being Hassan.
01:35Spoke to him over the weekend.
01:38Appreciate the dialogue.
01:39He's in a really good place mentally, working his tail off like we already know, but he's
01:47choosing to sit out this one, inexcused.
01:50The second one is Aaron.
01:53Aaron and I spoke before OTA started.
01:56He's been very good in communication.
01:59He's been here the entire time.
02:00It's inexcused, but he had an event that was very important to him, which he communicated.
02:10Both are inexcused?
02:11Both inexcused, yes.
02:12So are they getting fined?
02:15They're both subject to the CBA fine schedule.
02:19Now, Joe, I'm going to assume that, like he said, because of the CBA, I guess he has to
02:26say that, that he's inexcused.
02:29He didn't sound very inexcused to me, Joe.
02:31It sounded like he talked to Sala, told him, I've got something to do.
02:36Is it all right if I'm not there?
02:37And he said, yeah.
02:39Not that he could say no to him.
02:40Let's also drop that in there, Joe.
02:42He can't say no to Aaron if he wanted to be somewhere.
02:45And it's inexcused.
02:47I think the way that he frames it to everyone makes it out like he just didn't show up.
02:53I think Sala, third year in New York, still hasn't exactly figured out how to handle the
03:00media in the proper way.
03:03He's a fish out of water.
03:05He's not Rex Ryan.
03:06He's not Bill Parcells that used to coach the New York Jets.
03:10And that's what the Jets need if they're going to make an AFC championship run and they're
03:14going to light a fire under Aaron Rodgers' ass.
03:16I mean, let's be honest.
03:18You know as well as anybody that if Aaron Rodgers walks into Robert Sala's office and
03:23says I want to do this or want to do that, he's got carte blanche.
03:27What is Robert Sala going to do?
03:28He's an absolute clown.
03:29I mean, he's a big, tough guy, defensive coordinator, weight room guy.
03:34He's ripped.
03:35He loves to show off the guns.
03:36And then when push comes to shove with a little adversity, he doesn't want to get it in anybody's
03:41face.
03:42I mean, John Rennick is the newest addition, supposed to be a sack leader for that team.
03:46And he didn't show up.
03:48I mean, come on.
03:50He did not.
03:51I don't disagree with you, Joe.
03:53Just for me, it all comes down to-
03:56I know.
03:57Joe, there was another way to frame all that.
04:00It was like, it's like he took nine steps when he only had to take two, right?
04:05Like he only really needed to say the-
04:07Yeah.
04:08Yeah.
04:09The inexcused.
04:10No, you know, the inexcused.
04:11He just started talking about that, inexcused.
04:14Right.
04:15Because it wasn't inexcused.
04:16He then followed it up by saying, I talked to Aaron and there was somewhere that he needed
04:19to be.
04:21So I'm guessing, Joe, we're probably, we're making a lot of this as we always love to
04:25do.
04:26I'm going to guess that there's things in the CBA that you can't excuse guys from mandatory
04:33OTAs.
04:34I'm sure that there's something in there.
04:37He's probably got a bonus in his contract for being at a certain percentage of the OTAs
04:43and this, the Jets are like, you can go, but you're not going to get paid, is kind of what
04:47it comes down to, Joe.
04:48It sounds like it's a situation like that.
04:50It's really at the end of the day, much ado about nothing, because guess what?
04:54All that really matters is when he steps on that field, that week one open and Monday
04:58night game in San Francisco.
05:00That's what matters, Joe.
05:01Not any of this.
05:02That's what matters.
05:03But Carver, it goes bigger picture with Robert Saleh.
05:07It goes bigger picture on whether this team is a contender.
05:10Are they worthy of the nine and a half win total?
05:13Are they worthy of the 16 to one number that the books put that ahead of Cleveland?
05:18And I mean, against the, some of the other teams that made the playoffs last year.
05:23This is the most ridiculous thing is that we're pricing this into the market and what
05:28big game is Robert Saleh won?
05:31He's an absolute joke for a coach of the New York Jets.
05:35He's a clown.
05:36He's an absolute clown.
05:38When I looked at it earlier, Joe, when Gabe was on, I actually saw a couple of books that
05:41have him at a flat 10 now for their win total.
05:45We're hammering away at Saleh for all this stuff, but at the end of the day, let's just
05:50remember this.
05:51When the season ended, what did Roger stand up there and say when he did his end of the
05:57season press conference?
05:58And I'm not talking about the media tour that he went on.
06:00I'm talking about his end of the season press conference with the local media for the Jets.
06:04That was the one thing that stuck out more than any of it, Joe.
06:07I'll tell you what it was.
06:08It was him saying what this team really needs to focus on is football and no more distractions
06:15and not stuff outside of football.
06:17That's all that is.
06:18And, and you know what?
06:19All fine and good.
06:20Who knows where he is this week, but you want to know what he caused by being a quote unquote
06:24inexcused absence this week, Joe, guess what he caused.
06:28You could say it.
06:29Go ahead.
06:30No distractions.
06:31Distractions.
06:32Distractions.
06:33Yeah.
06:34Absolutely.
06:35So what did he cause with the, what did he cause with the, with the running for, with
06:38the vice president thing, which admittedly he didn't put out in the world, but still,
06:42what was that Joe, this off season for Aaron Rodgers?
06:44That's all off the field distractions.
06:47Here's the thing.
06:48Does that, with everything that he has his hand into, is he, is he even focused?
06:53Does he even want to play?
06:54I mean, you know, that's the other thing is that, you know, nobody knows if he's a hundred
06:59percent from the injury, you know, is he dialed in a hundred percent?
07:04I mean, he hasn't played not one game, not one full game in the Jets uniform, and yet
07:10he's not even in mandatory camp.
07:13I mean, anybody that wants to win or that wants to win a super bowl would be dialed
07:18in a hundred percent, wouldn't he?
07:21You would think, you would think that Joe, it's just something, a little food for thought
07:25there.
07:26Next, Jamar Chase had missed everything for the Bengals until this week.
07:30He did show up at their mandatory mini camp.
07:34So I'm sure, Joe, that had something to do with collecting some sort of a bonus or a
07:37check as well.
07:39So Jamar Chase does get to spend a couple of days with Joe Burrow and the Bengals there.
07:43The 49ers, Joe, have allegedly offered Brandon Aiyu $26 million a year.
07:49Joe, let's, let's just get down to it.
07:52What is he waiting for then?
07:53If they offer him 26, what is, what is he expecting to get?
07:57Is he expecting to get Justin Jefferson money?
08:01What is he expecting?
08:02Because $26 million a year, Joe, for Brandon Aiyu, that seems like a very nice overpay
08:07for a guy who obviously played very well for the 49ers.
08:11That's a big, big salary, and I'm surprised that they're still messing around if that
08:15was the number.
08:16I agree.
08:17And, you know, he had his breakout year last year, would he have 1,300 receiving yards?
08:22Again, expecting him to have Jamar Chase and, and Justin Jefferson type of numbers
08:27or even A.J.
08:28Brown?
08:29I mean, I don't understand.
08:30$26 million is a lot of money.
08:32Like what are you going to pay a wide receiver $40?
08:35They're giving, they're giving quarterbacks like Danny, Danny Dimes $40 million a year.
08:40Are wide receivers expecting that now as well?
08:43The only people that can never get paid are the running backs and they're the ones that
08:47take the most hits.
08:48It's ridiculous.
08:50It really is, Joe.
08:52As also staying with the 49ers, Brock Purdy says that a healthy full offseason is making
08:57him even better.
08:58I'll believe that, Joe, because two years ago he was obviously a seventh round draft
09:01pick.
09:02I'm sure he didn't have the full amount of reps that normally a starter would take going
09:09into the NFL.
09:10Last year he was hurt the entire offseason rehabbing an injury, didn't have the full
09:15offseason arsenal of taking reps with the ones.
09:18I think he's actually right, Joe, and having a full offseason where he's healthy and can
09:23do stuff with the ones, all it could do is help him.
09:26He's still a very young player in the league.
09:29He is.
09:30I mean, Brock Purdy elevated his game the past couple of seasons, would have been a
09:33Super Bowl champ if they could close it out last year.
09:36But again, you know, the bullseyes on their back, everybody's going to be gutted for the
09:4049ers and he's going to have to elevate his game because look at the quarterbacks in the
09:45conference.
09:46You got David Hurts, you got Jordan Love, Jared Goff, you got Matt Stafford, Stu, coming
09:50back.
09:51So for him to take this team back to an NFC championship game, he's going to have to play
09:55his A game.
09:57So you know, hopefully he can learn from his mistakes and if he gets the opportunity again,
10:02maybe he seals the deal.
10:04But I just don't think he does, Carl.
10:06I don't think they make the championship game.
10:12Time will tell, Joe.
10:13I don't, I don't, I'm not sure yet.
10:16We got to get into it before I, I'm not sold that they're as good as they were last year.
10:21I think that we still have some time to see.
10:23I want to get into camp.
10:24That's why it's tough to make these predictions in June, you know, April, May, June.
10:28I think it's very hard to do these things.
10:30We need to get into camp.
10:31And what's the other thing that no one can predict now and you know, there's going to
10:34be a ton of them, injuries, especially with the guys he's got like Debo and McCaffrey,
10:39who could get hurt at any moment, Joe, as you know.
10:42About the Niners.
10:44Can they get back to that level that they were at last year?
10:47Of course, losing in the Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs, the team that they beat
10:51in the NFC title game was the Detroit Lions.
10:54We haven't had enough Dan Campbell in our lives here in the offseason.
10:57That's another reason why we can't wait to get back to football.
10:59We'd get more Dan Campbell and his press conferences.
11:02Of course, Campbell says, Joe, things are going to change for the Lions now.
11:06They have gone from the team that was hunting everyone.
11:10They have the target on their back after making the NFC championship game.
11:14And what exactly does Campbell want from his players and what does he want himself, Joe?
11:17Let's find out.
11:18What's your message to the guys who may be the best competitors when they leave?
11:22Yeah, I think just remember what, you know, what are we playing for?
11:26You know, I want just each individual, you know, what do you want?
11:31What do you want out of this year?
11:33What do you want it to look like when we're sitting here and it's February?
11:37Like where is your mind?
11:40And so think about that and let's work backwards from there.
11:43That'll be the message.
11:46You know what I want.
11:47I want the whole enchilada.
11:49He wants the whole enchilada, Joe.
11:53You can't blame him, Carver.
11:55You can't blame him.
11:57The guy wants it.
11:58You know, that's, that's, you know, I respect a coach like that for going for it all because
12:04how many of these coaches are just happy to get to the playoffs?
12:08They don't really have a shot every year.
12:11Your goal has to be to get to the Super Bowl.
12:13I don't care.
12:14I don't care if you're a two win football team or a 10 win football team or 15 win football.
12:21Why do you play the game if you don't think you can win it all?
12:24So I respect Campbell.
12:27I do too, Joe.
12:28And I look, I like rooting for him.
12:31There's part of me that likes rooting for the Lions because I mean, kind of like the
12:35Bills.
12:36They, you know, we've kind of been in the same boat, never won a Super Bowl.
12:39They've never been to one, at least we've been to four and lost, but I don't mind rooting
12:43for the Lions.
12:44And Campbell makes it a little easier to root for them as well, because what is he, Joe?
12:50He's blue collar.
12:51He's a blue collar guy.
12:52And that's easy to root for.
12:54This last one was specifically for you.
12:56This is this morning at Giants camp, Malik Nabors, who Joe thinks maybe isn't wrong,
13:03was the best wide receiver that was coming out of this draft class this year, of course
13:07goes to the Giants in the top 10.
13:09He is already, Joe, making a big impression.
13:12In fact, he's going to tell you that he's made a big impression.
13:16What kind of first impression do you think you've made so far?
13:20I believe a good impression.
13:21You know, when I'm out there on the field, you know, the level of competition, you know,
13:25rises to at its highest, you know, because, you know, my competition, you know, I bring
13:29the, I bring the dog, I bring the juice when I'm out there.
13:31So having me on the field, you know, it's been, it's been helpful to those, you know,
13:35those older guys that's here.
13:36You just, you know, trying to just bring some enthusiasm to when we out there on the field.
13:41Celebration, you know, I know y'all seen a lot of celebration.
13:44So, you know, just trying to get, you know, all the guys, you know, ready to practice.
13:48Joe, he brings that, he brings that dog.
13:51He brings that juice.
13:53That's your boy Malik Nabors.
13:55Every LSU wide receiver brings that juice, Justin Jefferson, Jamar Chase.
14:01I mean, the only one that really hasn't lived up to expectation yet, yet over the past few
14:06seasons, it's Terrace Marshall, but hopefully he can maybe elevate his game in 2024, but
14:12that's what they do, baby.
14:13You play in Baton Rouge, you step up.
14:16I mean, come on, 75,000 fans at MetLife ain't going to scare you.
14:20He's used to playing 110,000 in Death Valley.
14:24I mean, come on, teams like Alabama and Tennessee, Georgia, him, him, him.
14:30I mean, you're playing the Cardinals, big deal.
14:32You think these guys, you know, are phased by playing an NFL team?
14:37It's like, it's like, come on.
