00:00This is going to be fun. 48 hours until the 2024 NBA Finals
00:08begins in Boston between the Celtics and the Mavericks. We
00:12play a game of NBA buy or sell using the finals to have some
00:16big picture and legacy conversations live right here
00:20on this Tuesday on the early line. So DRS let's dive right
00:25in buy or sell with a title. Luka Doncic is the best player
00:31in the world. Luka Doncic into the NBA Finals leading the
00:36Dallas Mavericks into the NBA Championship Series for the
00:39first time in 13 years. So that is the buy or sell with a
00:43title. Luka Doncic is the best player in the world. We are a
00:48what have you done for me lately society if the Dallas
00:52Mavericks win the world championship over the Celtics
00:54were a heavy favorite to win the NBA Championship, then
00:58absolutely even though common sense is now hold on the MVP is
01:02based on a season long here. It's Luka Doncic and you know
01:04it's going up against some other players who are very good
01:06and Nicola Jokic involved and Giannis Antetokounmpo and
01:09Joel Embiid. Look hear me out on that. Yes. Theoretically,
01:12he's probably not the best overall, but if he wins the
01:16championship, I'm giving him those rights right now because
01:18if I see a series that goes six or seven games and Luka is
01:22putting up triple double after triple double basically saying
01:26I am putting Dallas and the Mavericks on my back here
01:30myself and Kyrie Irving. We're going to beat this immovable
01:32object in the Boston Celtics. Then why not absolutely he wins
01:36a world championships here. He is the best player in the world.
01:39I'll give it to him. Luka Doncic is already a top five
01:43player in the NBA and frankly, I don't think it's four or five.
01:46So let's call it top three, but I still think the best player on
01:50planet Earth is Nicola Jokic. Nobody really does what he does
01:54still to this point. If you were building a franchise, who
01:57would you take Doncic or Jokic? I think either makes sense
02:01again. Luka Doncic is already a top five player and arguably
02:05top three, but I still believe Nicola Jokic even if they were
02:08to match each other in terms of NBA championships is the best
02:12player in the association. That is still how I see it. Luka
02:17Doncic again already top three, but I still give the nod to
02:21Jokic, Donnie. No, I look I can't argue with you at this
02:25point because you know what have you done for me lately? We
02:29haven't seen it lately yet, which means a championship here
02:31for Luka Doncic. I love him. I think he is a top three top
02:35four top five player argumentative and also next
02:38year. If you're looking at and let's just say they even lose
02:40this. I'm like take a step further. Let's just say Dallas
02:43loses, but not just plays well. You know it's going to be the
02:44favorite to win the MVP next year. It's going to be Luka
02:47Doncic over everybody else. So I'm taking it now where I'm
02:50saying I don't know what's going to happen in the NBA
02:52finals, but if it's positive for Luka, I'm going to give it
02:55to him here because I love to live in the moment and what I
02:57just saw was probably an unbelievable finals performance
03:01after an unbelievable run throughout the final half of
03:04the NBA season. I'll give it to him on that aspect. Yeah.
03:07Listen, I'm going to bet Luka Doncic before next year begins
03:10in terms of winning the NBA MVP award because Nicola Jokic is
03:14probably going to be the favorite having won it three
03:17times in the last four years. You would expect to be there as
03:20well, but with the 65 game minimum not going to bet Jojo
03:23with Nicola Jokic winning it three times in the past four
03:26years not going to bet the Joker. I think Luka Doncic is
03:30the answer. In fact, I think the best bet to win the NBA
03:33finals MVP award is Luka Doncic and yet I still would give the
03:37nod to Nicola Jokic as the best player on planet Earth despite
03:41what Doncic is doing and what what Luka Doncic is doing
03:45throughout this NBA playoff run is also historical. He scored
03:49twenty-eight points in all the five games against Minnesota
03:53thirty points twice or thirty points in four of those five
03:57games in that series. He has now recorded nine playoff triple
04:01doubles in his young career. That's already in the top ten
04:04in the history of NBA playoff action. Now we go to the other
04:09guy. I said Luka Doncic was the best bet to win NBA finals MVP
04:15because if Dallas wins and if Dallas wins, it is only Luka
04:20Doncic. I don't think the Mavericks win an NBA
04:22championship without Luka Doncic being arguably the best
04:25player or at least a one A to the other side of things
04:28though. The Eastern Conference finals MVP was not Jason Tatum.
04:33It was Jalen Brown and Tatum is the odds on favorite. However,
04:36to be that NBA finals MVP. We look at what Jason Tatum has
04:40throughout his playoff resume. Twenty-four points per game.
04:44108 postseason games already. Five appearances in the
04:49conference finals. This is his second in the NBA finals for
04:53the second time in the last three years but they came up
04:56short to Golden State two years ago. They did not reach the NBA
05:00finals a season ago. Donnie, as we have said for the Celtics
05:04franchise, they are judged not by winning the East, not by a
05:08playoff berth, not by the NBA's best regular season record but
05:12by winning an NBA championship. So, buy or sell to you. Jason
05:17Tatum as the superstar for Boston is under the most
05:21pressure in the 2024 NBA finals. Buy, buy, buy, buy. Absolutely
05:27because if Jason Tatum doesn't win an NBA championship this
05:30year, it should be bye bye to him from Boston because I don't
05:33know how he can return. Look and sometimes you overstate this,
05:36right? He's a great player. Boston is lucky to have him.
05:39They would love to have him for another 10 years but they
05:41also want to get the winning that goes associated with a
05:43great player and also when we talk about sometimes LeBron
05:46James, let's just say his first go around in Cleveland. Didn't
05:49work out in their favor. Tried his best but what most people
05:51were saying, well, nobody can win a championship in Cleveland,
05:54not even the great LeBron James. Goes to Miami, wins a
05:56couple championships but he does return back and finally
05:59gets that job done but if you are Jason Tatum, you're taking,
06:02look, this isn't the little engine that could win LeBron's
06:05first go around in Cleveland was like, well, he's going up
06:07against unbelievable teams and it's just himself. No, Jason
06:10Tatum is a fantastic basketball player on an unbelievably
06:14talented and deep basketball team that is favored to win the
06:17NBA finals and if Boston doesn't get it done this year,
06:21when will they ever get it done? So, absolutely, Jason
06:25Tatum by far the most pressure in these finals, it's on his
06:29shoulders, bone crushing pressure for him, Ben. The
06:33third time you will hear bye bye bye throughout this show
06:37because I agree with Donnie. Without a shadow of a doubt,
06:40the most pressure in the NBA finals is on Jason Tatum. His
06:44Boston team is the historic franchise. His Celtics team
06:48judged by NBA championships and trying to hang banner number
06:51eighteen, their first NBA title since 2008. It is squarely on
06:57the shoulders of Jason Tatum. If they come up short, sure,
07:00there will be plenty to blame. Joe Mazula, Jalen Brown, so on
07:03and so forth but first and foremost, it will focus on
07:06Jason Tatum and if the Celtics come up short, what does that
07:09ultimately mean? That Jason Tatum was by far not the best
07:13player in this series playing second stage to Luka Doncic. We
07:18will talk about the Celtics and their history up next. Buyer
07:22Cell continues the twenty twenty-four NBA finals edition
07:27two days away from the start of the finals this season in
07:30Beantown inside TD Garden game number one on Thursday night
07:35inside TD Garden. Seventeen championship banners hang DRS.
07:41That's tied for the most in NBA history alongside the Los
07:45Angeles Lakers. Those the only two organizations that have
07:49double digit NBA championships. Jason Tatum and LeBron James on
07:54there for the Lakers. Alright, I'll let that slide. Seventeen
07:57for both of those organizations but buy or sell. Put that smile
08:03away. Stop licking your lips. Put that smile away. Buy or
08:07sell. The Celtics are the greatest franchise in NBA
08:10history. Look, if you put it to a vote right now, LeBron James
08:14probably is the greatest Laker of all time. So, we do think
08:17that LeBron James should be up there on that quick little
08:20graphic but having said that to me, you're like rivalries in
08:23the east and you try to like look at the bias out of the
08:25way because I don't like the city of Boston. I don't like
08:27Boston's teams any bit because I'm from Philadelphia and
08:29that's just what we do. We like to hate on other organizations
08:32particularly to have a lot more success than our organizations
08:35do but having said that, sometimes you do take a step
08:37back and say, how many championships these two teams
08:40have won? Look around the NBA. It's amazing. Like Boston
08:43versus LA was not just some fictitious thing we would
08:46chant. They would chant in the 1980s, beat LA, you know, beat
08:48Boston or whatever because these two teams have won a lot
08:51of them but Boston won a lot of championships a long time ago.
08:55So, my nod here would go towards the Los Angeles Lakers
08:58just because they have a lot of championships but also have a
09:02nice little balance in those championships. Win some there
09:04in the 80s. Win some there, you know, in the early 2000s. And
09:07by the way, they won that championship in 2000, 2001,
09:102002, 9, 10, and then 20. So, just for the recent relevancy
09:15here of the Los Angeles Lakers, I would give the nod to them.
09:19Equal balance on championships itself but again, just for what
09:23have you done for me lately somewhat in the past 25 years,
09:26it's been much more Lakers along with also having a very
09:29rich history as well. Completely agree, Donnie. Very
09:32well said. As DRS knows very well, I grew up in the Los
09:36Angeles area. Area. Growing up, I was a fan of the Kobe and
09:40Shaq. Growing up, I was a Kobe and Shaq fan and then it became,
09:46is that Corey McGetty? Did Corey McGetty just get a shout
09:49out during an NBA? Absolutely. Fantastic. I love that. Oh,
09:53Darius Miles, good one as well. I grew up a huge Lakers fan. I
09:57was a diehard Lakers fan. I am not so much a Lakers fan anymore
10:02anymore because I often admit that I grew up for most of my
10:06life hating on LeBron James and advocating for why Kobe Bryant
10:10was a greater all-time player. I do not make the same arguments.
10:13You wanna have a one-on-one conversation. I might have that
10:16with you at another date but the Lakers are a better all-time
10:19franchise than that of the Boston Celtics. 32 NBA Finals
10:23appearances to Boston's 23. The same amount of NBA
10:27championships. Why? Because of Bill Russell. Eleven of the
10:31seventeen NBA titles for the Celtics came between 1957 and
10:361969. The Celtics have won NBA championship since the mid
10:431980s. It was 2008. The Lakers are a better all-time
10:48franchise. Buy or sell next up as we look at finals MVP
10:53breakdowns. Coming from the winning team. Fifty-four of the
10:57fifty-five times. The only guy ever to win it from a losing
11:02team that was Jerry West back in 1969. I believe he won the
11:07finals MVP averaging thirty-eight points per game
11:10virtually losing out to Bill Russell's Celtics if I am not
11:14mistaken. The last time it got close 2015 that was when
11:19LeBron went off for Cleveland but they lost out ultimately
11:22did the Cavaliers to the Warriors and Andre Iguodala won
11:26the NBA Finals MVP. So buy or sell DRS. The finals MVP will
11:31never come from the losing team again. I'll buy that. It's not
11:34coming from a losing team. It's not designed to come from a
11:37losing team and certainly if players are putting up thirty-
11:39five to forty-five points a game that team probably did
11:42win the NBA Finals. I just think it's the way of the
11:44product and it's a shame because you do have those
11:48unbelievable efforts by a team that you might think is not as
11:51good as the other one. The guys put up Herculean jobs just like
11:53LeBron James in that losing effort but it's designed to go
11:56to the winning team. I don't think it's ever going to be go
11:59against to another losing and also if it was recent like Ben
12:02past five years it happened. Oh maybe it could happen again
12:04even if that was the only time it happened but the fact that
12:06it happened so so long ago the precedent has been set. It's a
12:10victory award for the team that won and also the best player on
12:13the team that won and by the way, it's also a narrative
12:16award. Yeah. Yeah. I know. I agree but listen, it is a
12:21narrative award. Yes, people's legacies and maybe some
12:25financial incentives are decided by how these hardware
12:29are given out but it's a narrative award and you are
12:32always going to find at least somebody enough to celebrate on
12:35a victorious team then give it to the best loser. It's just
12:39how things work.
