01:11Really appreciate PrizePix and GameTime as sponsors.
01:14Go and check them out.
01:15It's good stuff, especially this time of year, NBA finals coming up, NFL schedule released,
01:23all that stuff.
01:24So let's, we're going to do a few things, do a few headlines, answer a few mailbag questions
01:31that I had over on Boston Sports Journal with the member chat that I do every week.
01:37Some interesting stuff, I think, and wanted to relate that to you guys.
01:41But headlines, Matthew Judon held a series of youth football camps this past weekend.
01:47Karen Corrigan from MassLive was there at one of them, apparently, and you get these
01:52things at these charity events in the off-season, apparently, they said that contract questions
02:00were off-limits with him, but Karen basically was able to get Judon to say that he was coming
02:07to mandatory mini-camp because, you know, he didn't want to give up money, because you'll
02:13get fined if you're not there.
02:15Not a surprise.
02:20I can't even think of an instance.
02:21Maybe there are.
02:22Only maybe franchise tag guys who aren't currently under contract, but as far as guys under contract
02:27in the NFL, they all report to mini-camp.
02:31They don't hold out because of the fines, and you see more hold-ins.
02:35Do I expect Judon to be doing much on the field in the mandatory mini-camp?
02:39That could be the question.
02:40We'll have to see.
02:43Obviously, I think he's in line for a new deal, whether it's here or someplace else.
02:49We'll have to see.
02:51There was a report from Jeremy Fowler saying that Broncos receiver Cortland Sutton wants
02:56to be paid in the $15, $16 million range.
02:59Denver currently has about $8.7 million in available cap space, but big extensions for
03:03guard Quinn Miners and cornerback Pat Sertan are on deck.
03:10So Cortland Sutton's a guy that we have brought up many times as sort of a, you know, one
03:17of those guys that the Patriots could possibly go out and trade for.
03:22They have already, the Broncos have already traded Jerry Judy.
03:27I doubt that they trade Cortland Sutton, but look, if the Broncos don't want to pay that
03:33and they might think about moving him, I'm interested.
03:36I think Cortland Sutton's a really good player.
03:39I probably would have given him the, um, what's his name?
03:47The Calvin Ridley deal that the Patriots offered $20 million.
03:50So 15, 16 million, like, yeah, uh, I'm in it.
03:55So the, the, the wide receiver market has gotten out of control.
03:58I mean, when I'm on, I'm on Ross St. Brown gets a deal that, um, what does it average
04:07is 30 per year, AJ Brown's at 32 Tyree said 30.
04:11Okay.
04:12You understand that Devante, you understand that at 28, um, it, the, I'm on Ross St. Brown
04:20deal is did not go over well in NFL circles.
04:24It's totally, I mean, he's a slot receiver.
04:26He's not even one.
04:27I mean, he's not AJ Brown.
04:28He's not Tyree kill.
04:29He's not Devante Adams.
04:31He's more the lines of Cooper cup.
04:36So if Cortland Sutton is available and for that price, yeah, I'm doing it, but I don't
04:43expect him to be available.
04:45Somebody's got to make, um, Denver and their whole quarterback situation look good.
04:50And, and Cortland Sutton would be one of those guys.
04:53Uh, one thing I wrote for Monday at Boston sports journal, I sort of did my annual, um,
05:00took a little bit of time, but I did my annual look back, um, talking to, um, talking to
05:09NFL executives.
05:11Um, certainly one, I hadn't won.
05:14I definitely talked to for a long time about all of them.
05:17Then their stuff came up about Javon Baker and a few other guys that I had to check with
05:21the rest of the league.
05:25So I just wanted to, I just wanted to get the background on the Patriots draft picks.
05:32You guys know that I don't do much of a deep dive, um, on the draft picks.
05:37When I do look at the draft picks, it's all film stuff.
05:40And, and we know that, um, that the, the success guys going from college to pros often doesn't
05:48come down to what you see on the film.
05:50It comes down to, uh, the player, their habits, their personality, their characteristic, how
05:56hard are they going to work?
05:58Like all that stuff.
05:59So I call guys I've talked to for years in this league and this executive, um, basically
06:08read from their scouting reports, um, on these guys.
06:11Um, I don't think a lot of it was, um, major.
06:15Um, certainly Javon Baker is a guy that, um, there's a lot of people in the league
06:22that aren't sure whether this is going to work out.
06:25They think that fourth round was a bit, um, too rich for, you know, all of his concerns.
06:31One, one league executive I talked to thinks that half the league had him off their boards.
06:38Um, I will say that, um, the kid certainly has talent.
06:44There's no doubt about that.
06:46Um, you know, there, there's a, there's a term in terms of like, when you look at these
06:52draft picks, um, you know, how much you're going to have to babysit them, keep an eye
06:58on them, all that stuff.
06:59Like it's, there's basically different levels.
07:02There's no maintenance.
07:04The guy's going to do things on his own.
07:06It'll be fine.
07:07Um, there's light maintenance, you know, um, might have to keep an eye on them a little
07:13bit.
07:14There's, and then there's the heavy maintenance guys, which is, they're going to have to be
07:19coached hard.
07:20Um, you're going to have to keep an eye on them off the field.
07:24Uh, Javon Baker fell into that, uh, that area for this scout, uh, reading from some of it.
07:33Um, he was a non-fit grade-wise, uh, his character stuff was a concern.
07:38Heavy maintenance.
07:39There was a deal where there was a car that pulled up next to him.
07:42That was with four white males who made racist comments towards him.
07:46He flashed a gun.
07:47The police showed up.
07:48He was honest with them.
07:49Uh, that was 2021.
07:50Then there's a bunch of stuff, just stuff from reckless driving, multiple fights, suspensions
07:54at Alabama, uh, went to jail, charge was dropped.
07:57There's multiple gun incidents, some other stuff, family background, family background
08:01history is not great.
08:02So there's a lot of stuff with him.
08:03Um, you know, when all that stuff, I try to, when, when stuff is somewhat alarming, you
08:11know, I check with, with other league sources on this stuff, um, including a source close
08:17to Javon Baker who, who basically confirmed everything, um, that was in that report.
08:25Um, uh, but another executive, um, brought up the father, um, Gerald Baker, Javon Baker's
08:33dad, um, has been an issue in the past.
08:36He's, uh, the, the scout said, you know, the stories about Caleb Williams' father, this
08:39is times 10, uh, he wants to be part of everything.
08:44Everything is about money.
08:45If Javon's not playing, there could be an issue.
08:47He's not afraid to stick his nose in when the kid is away from the father wasn't so
08:50bad.
08:51If he's there and involves lookout, um, there's a lot of stuff.
08:55I mean, things didn't work out from what I can glean.
08:59Alabama didn't want Javon Baker anymore.
09:01He was supposed to go to Kentucky, but Kentucky basically said, and I think he went there
09:05for a workout or something along those lines.
09:07And Kentucky was like, thanks, no thanks.
09:10You know, UCF worked out with Gus Malzahn, who has publicly said really nice things about
09:17a Javon Baker and, uh, but, um, but in NFL circles, they know because these UCF coaches
09:27talk to them and give them the honest assessment.
09:30Baker was supposed to go back to UCF for this year and agreed to a big NIL deal and
09:36including got, you know, a decent chunk of coin up front, you got the upfront money next
09:43day he declared for the draft.
09:44Um, there's expected to be litigation and all that coming up.
09:48We'll have to see if that goes away or not already since he's been with the Patriots
09:52as a social media posts, which the Patriots are not happy about.
09:56Also the fact that, um, that on, uh, right before he was due to report to rookie camp,
10:04um, he fired longtime agent, Joe Linta, Joe, I've known Joe for years.
10:09Um, him and Bill used to do a lot of work together.
10:14Um, you know, he's, he's one of the really good guys in this business.
10:19He usually represents really good, uh, players off the field, stuff like that.
10:24I don't know why he represented, um, Javon.
10:28He wouldn't answer questions.
10:30Um, when I asked him other than to confirm that he was fired by Baker, um, and Baker
10:37decided to go with an agent I've never heard of Jason Davis, who has negotiated seven contracts.
10:45Um, also, uh, one other thing, um, I don't know if it happened.
10:54Baker was supposed to show up for OTAs.
10:58One of that entourage like publicist, um, bodyguard, other stuff.
11:04He's a fourth round pick.
11:06So let's talk more about what this all means and some of the other issues in just a second.
11:13But let me tell you about prize picks.
11:16Prize picks is America's number one fantasy sports app with more than 5 million members.
11:20It is the most fun and exciting way to get in on the action.
11:22While you, while you watch your favorite sports and players just pick more or less on two or more
11:28player stats for a shot to win up to a hundred times your cash cash with prize picks, you could
11:34turn $10 into a thousand dollars in a single game, watching your favorite sports this summer.
11:39You can make a prize picks lineup in as little as 60 seconds.
11:41Seriously.
11:42I, I did it before I was like, I did, uh, some on the golf recently.
11:46That was fun watching along.
11:48You just need to pick more or less on two to six players, stat productions, and you're locked in.
11:53If you're looking for promotions, prize picks has got you covered every week from lowering select
11:58player stat productions on Tuesdays, which increases your chances of getting a win to getting
12:03your entry fees back.
12:04If you have a losing lineup on Friday, this week on prize picks, uh, I'm really into the hockey.
12:10Um, and the NBA is kind of a snooze go Celtics.
12:14Can't wait to watch you guys against Kyrie.
12:17This week on prize picks.
12:18I'm looking at the hockey board, selecting Gustav Forsling over one and a half shots on goal.
12:23Sam Bennett hated in Boston over four hits Alexander Barkoff over 0.5 assists.
12:30That's easy.
12:31That's like taking money from a baby and Chris Crider over two and a half shots on goal.
12:36Download the app today and use code CLNS for a first match deposit up to a hundred dollars.
12:41Pick more, pick less.
12:44It's that easy.
12:45Uh, so back to, uh, what I reported this weekend.
12:48So look, um, the reason I do this stuff is because, uh, like I want the information.
12:55Yeah, I know.
12:56I'm sure there's people every year I hear it, you know, cause I've reported on this stuff
12:59before on various players, you know, Christian Barmore wasn't an issue.
13:05Okay.
13:05Sean booty we'll see with him issue.
13:09Um, you know, you know, in some of the stuff is minor, like somebody told me, for
13:16example, there's nothing on Drake may people love Drake may, um, Jalen Polk for the most
13:21part, um, the league executive that I talked to, like, he really likes this character.
13:25Um, I think he knows him pretty well.
13:28And, but I talked to another league executive when I was talking about, you know, some of
13:32these other players on the Patriots and they said there was a red flag on Jalen Polk.
13:36Um, I don't know the specifics of that, but then I ran it by two more league executives
13:40and they said that was a surprise to them.
13:42Um, they had nothing, um, Caden Wallace.
13:46This is a, uh, and I'm sure people are going to say, well, like, what does that mean?
13:51Um, he, his family is very well educated.
13:54Um, of course that's not an indictment, but they think that there's, whether it's with
14:00the kid or the family or what they think that there's the perception is that there's an
14:05air of entitlement.
14:06Um, with him, there's a question, you know, you, there's a whole left tackle thing, but
14:10there's also a question about like, um, a lot of NFL teams question whether he loves
14:16football, um, or not, which is often a question asked of, um, some of the more highly
14:22educated players, um, in this league.
14:25Um, they wonder if they're passionate about it, you know, whether he's lazy, that thing,
14:29but nothing major off the field.
14:31Um, we talked about Baker, um, you know, who, who knows, um, Marcellus dial six round,
14:39awesome kid off the field.
14:41Um, the key thing to know is they, this executive saw him as outside only.
14:46That's where he's been with the Patriots.
14:48Um, Joe Milton, there's a lot of stuff.
14:51Um, you know, a lot of immaturity stuff, which most of the time you're like, okay,
14:58but he is 24 years old.
15:00Um, there's a, uh, people wonder if he's willing to put in the work to be a
15:04franchise quarterback first and at first into the building last out of the building.
15:09Uh, but of course he's a six round pick.
15:10So if it doesn't work out like who really cares and Jaheim bell, uh, this executive
15:16that I talked to really likes it.
15:17He said, uh, um, personality wise, there's a lot with them.
15:22He was borderline non fit off the board for us.
15:25The questions are concerned where our personality fit diva, selfish party
15:29habits, emotional maturity, need structure.
15:32Um, that sort of thing.
15:33But the league executive really did like him as a player and sort of
15:37the measurables, like you're betting.
15:39So, you know, we'll have to see how things go again.
15:43The purpose in doing this is not to indict anybody.
15:46I'm trying, I'm giving people facts.
15:48This is the, this is the opinion of the rest of the league.
15:51I don't look into this stuff before the draft.
15:54Now I know who's on the Patriots.
15:56Now I go back to those guys and I call them and be like, all right, so
15:58what's the deal with this player off the field and sometimes it matters.
16:02Sometimes it doesn't.
16:04Um, but we'll just have to see on all those guys, the Celtics are in the NBA
16:09finals, and I can tell you, Nick is very excited.
16:13Celtics will have home court.
16:14So possibly four games at TD garden.
16:16How awesome would it be to go to a game and experience that atmosphere
16:19and get the hate on Kyrie game time makes it getting NBA finals
16:23tickets, even faster and easier.
16:25Prices on the game time app actually go down the closer it
16:28gets the tip off with killer.
16:30Last minute deals, all in prices, views from your seat.
16:33I love that.
16:33I have to see the view for my seat before I purchase any tickets.
16:37It's right there in the app and their lowest price guarantee game time takes
16:41the guesswork out of buying NBA tickets.
16:44I was just looking at the app for game one and saw a ton of discounts being
16:47offered, like seriously, it says like, you know, $49 off a hundred dollars off.
16:52Of course the, the, the price tags are expensive.
16:55I'm not outrageous.
16:56If you're a hoop head and planning on going to the NBA finals.
17:00Um, like I said, love getting a panoramic view from the seat in the app before I
17:05buy, take the guesswork out of buying NBA finals tickets with game time, purchase
17:10the game time app, create an account, use code CLNS for $20 off your first purchase.
17:15Terms apply again, create an account and redeem core code C L N S for $20 off your
17:22first purchase, download game time today.
17:24Last minute tickets, lowest price guaranteed.
17:28Okay, let's go with the mailbag Bay area.
17:30Pat's fan, Greg Mac Jones started as a rookie and did well before the subsequent
17:33nightmare can may do the same thing, assuming they don't make the same dumb
17:37mistakes, or is it better to let him sit?
17:40Even if he's slightly better than Bersette coming out of training camp, I, you know,
17:44Bay, I just think these guys are in.
17:47They're in two different categories, Mac Jones and Drake may, as far as coming out.
17:52Uh, Drake may is all ceiling.
17:53Um, young pup, um, has mechanical issues, all that stuff.
17:59Mac Jones was, I mean, not overly experienced.
18:03Um, but cause you know, it took him a while to play at Alabama, but as far as,
18:09you know, playing in a pro style offense, his mechanics, all that stuff, he was
18:14very, he was pro ready, he was the most pro ready quarterback coming out.
18:18I think you could say that Drake may might be, as far as the top quarterbacks
18:23in this, in this draft might be the least, um, least pro ready quarterback.
18:30So the big thing is about getting Drake may to, to, to be his, to be
18:37his best and to develop him.
18:40And so I don't think there's, I mean, physically could Drake may be better
18:47than Jacoby preset coming out of training camp.
18:50Yeah.
18:51But as far as being an NFL quarterback and playing, I mean,
18:53Jacoby presets played a lot of games.
18:55He's won games the last time he was in the system.
18:58QBR, I think he was eighth in the league.
19:01Um, you know, a leader durable, all that stuff.
19:05Like, I don't think it's a given.
19:07I would, to me, it would be an upset if Drake may is even remotely close to
19:11being better as an NFL quarterback, like winning games that Sunday, then Jacoby
19:17preset, uh, but thanks for the questions.
19:19And Phillip 77 AVPs system relies a lot on the run game to be successful.
19:25Do the Patriots have the running backs to run the system?
19:28Quick answer.
19:29Yes.
19:30Is there enough depth of the position?
19:31Should they bring in another running back?
19:33Um, I, this is a system where, uh, you don't need.
19:40You know, they had Nick Chubb in Cleveland.
19:42That's great.
19:43They sort of stumbled upon them.
19:45Patriots should have drafted them over Sony Michelle.
19:48Um, but it's not, it's not the, it's not the running back that makes the system.
19:52It's the system that makes the running back.
19:54I think that in any case, especially in this type of zone blocking scheme, what
19:59have you, I mean, think Terrell Davis and the Broncos, um, they didn't win.
20:05John Elway didn't win a Superbowl until it was, you know, Mike Shanahan
20:09and the zone running scheme and Alex Gibbs, the offensive line coach.
20:14And, you know, guys were coming out of the woodwork at
20:17running back to run the ball.
20:18That's the same thinking here.
20:20I mean, I remember when I covered the Packers, um, you know, when they went
20:24to the NFC championship game, should have gone to the Superbowl in 20, 2007.
20:29First of all, they had like no veteran backs on the roster.
20:33They drafted Brandon Jackson.
20:36Um, I want to say in the second or third round, they drafted Deshaun
20:41win really late and those guys like started from jump and, you know, they
20:47were pretty good, but then they went out and they found Ryan Grant, who was
20:51toiling away on the, on the giants, on the bottom of their roster, and they
20:55traded a late round pick for him.
20:57At some point, I think in camp, he came in and the dude was like, he was like a
21:02superstar, um, you know, for a while.
21:05And I think he even got a big contract from somebody at some point.
21:08Um, so like, I'm not worried about the running back.
21:12I'm more worried about like, can they get the, can they get the blocking going?
21:15That's what I'm really worried about.
21:16You know, can they mix the plays?
21:18Right.
21:19Um, it's not about the back and remandery Stevenson is great.
21:22I like Antonio Gibson.
21:24I'm sure one of these guys that, that they have, um, we'll work out the
21:31Fenwick kid.
21:32I know they're high on, we haven't seen much of him.
21:34I know he's been battling some, uh, hamstring tightness, so, you know, he
21:39could, he could be, um, a guy that pays off for them and then you can find
21:44running backs forever.
21:45So, uh, you can even find one in the UFL or whatever is being played right now.
21:50So no, I'm not worried about the running back.
21:52I'm more worried about the offensive line and let's get the offensive line.
21:57Right.
21:57Let's get the quarterback, right.
21:58Let's get the system.
21:59Right.
22:00And, uh, you know, let remandery do his thing.
22:04Uh, G wool, LaCotte.
22:06I'm curious about the two shifts that might alter talent evaluation.
22:10What does going to more zone blocking imply for the line?
22:14What current guys do or do not fit that ideal prototype?
22:18So, um, so I think the reason I picked this, this question is because I think
22:24it's a bit of a, this is a bit of a non-story.
22:27I think it, it used to be back in the day, like when we were just
22:31talking about the Broncos back in the day, Alex gives all this stuff.
22:34They used to get small undersized, these guys, the crab blocking and
22:38cut blocking and stuff like that.
22:40Like, which you can't even really do anymore legally.
22:43So a lot of things have changed, but probably the biggest change is like.
22:48The offensive lineman now coming out of college are so athletic at all the
22:52positions that there aren't many, there aren't many players that you would say,
22:56all right, they can't, they can't do this now.
23:00I w are there guys like Michael?
23:02When, who, for example, is not an ideal fit for the zone blocking scheme,
23:05but he'll be fine.
23:06He's plenty athletic enough.
23:07Um, he's done a lot of this stuff.
23:09The Patriots have done zone blocking.
23:11It's not, it's not a wholesale change.
23:13This has been part of their system.
23:15This is just going to be the bread and butter.
23:16Um, a Tonio Moffitt would be a guy that I would look at.
23:19I mean, you're looking for foot quickness, getting out that sort of thing.
23:25David Andrews is getting up there, but I've always thought he's been
23:27good at this stuff in the past.
23:28So no, not, not that's, this isn't a big deal.
23:32This is if people are bringing this up, it's sort of using old stereotypes and
23:37it's not really, uh, something that applies to today's game, uh, final one
23:42here, bill D 1530, the Patriots strength strength and conditioning situation
23:46seems pretty light in terms of experience, staff number and facilities.
23:50Many top college programs have more experienced staff significantly
23:53better facilities.
23:55This has to impact retention of top players and recruiting top free agents.
23:58Why are most of the media giving the crafts a free pass on this?
24:02And then also, uh, on top of Mayo, putting his brother in charge of the department.
24:07Um, I don't know about the Duran Mayo thing.
24:09I look, he's the head coach.
24:11He thinks his brother's good.
24:13He's the guy.
24:14Is it nepotism?
24:15I don't know.
24:16I don't know much about Duran.
24:17We will see.
24:18But as far as the, the implication that the Patriots aren't doing enough with
24:23their strength and conditioning and how it might affect free agents and retaining
24:27players to me, this again is sort of like an old way of thinking, like, you know,
24:35back in the day when, you know, it was basically year long NFL training and
24:40stuff like that, like you might get a, you might do that.
24:45Um, but now like these guys are off from the end of the season until.
24:51I think what is it?
24:52The beginning of April for optional stuff.
24:55Um, so that's months.
24:57They have their own stuff at home.
24:58These guys are paid a lot.
25:00They have their own gyms.
25:01They have their own trainers.
25:03Um, in season, I'm sure the Patriots do exactly what they need to do.
25:06I don't think they're understaffed.
25:07I mean, could they use a bigger weight room and all that stuff?
25:09Yeah, sure.
25:10And that's supposed to be on the way, but my point is like, you can't compare
25:14NFL strength training to college strength training colleges.
25:19Those guys are there all the time.
25:21This is a recruiting set.
25:22That stuff doesn't go on in the NFL.
25:25You know, you want a player, a player's going to come to you.
25:28I don't care if you're working out in my, in the unfinished part of my basement,
25:33they're going to come.
25:34If you pay them the most money by a wide margin, they're going to come.
25:37Um, the Patriots facilities are fine.
25:39They're not, they're not bad enough where people are going to avoid it.
25:42There's plenty of other teams that are worse.
25:44In my opinion, that might not hold up, uh, in the NFL PA survey survey,
25:48but that's what I see.
25:51So thanks for anybody, everybody for, um, for tuning in for this episode.
