00:01 The green sea turtle, often depicted gliding majestically beneath the waves,
00:05 is the poster child of the turtle family.
00:08 But there are many other species that need our attention too,
00:12 such as the 18 different varieties of freshwater turtles Malaysia is home to.
00:17 These freshwater turtles, many of which are endangered,
00:21 play a crucial role in maintaining the ecosystem of Malaysia's rivers.
00:25 Chen Pelfnyok and her team at the Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia
00:30 work tirelessly to conserve the critically endangered river terrapin
00:34 by collecting and incubating their eggs.
00:37 Chen, the co-founder of TCS, says these terrapins are vital for mangrove growth,
00:42 which in turn is crucial in preventing erosion
00:45 and protecting coastal communities against floods.
00:49 When they feed on fruits or mangrove shoots that fall onto the river,
00:57 when they defecate, these seeds will be planted along the river.
01:01 So what this means is that river terrapin is a very good seed disperser.
01:06 It is a privilege to have this rare creature living in the river
01:11 behind your home, behind your school.
01:14 Meanwhile, worldwide fund for nature in Malaysia freshwater biologist
01:18 Zaid Nasir and his team work to conserve tainted terrapins,
01:22 which are also critically endangered.
01:25 The freshwater turtles are known as the most beautiful freshwater turtles in the world
01:31 because of their unique characteristics during mating season.
01:36 This happens to male freshwater turtles,
01:40 where the head changes color to white and red stripes between the eyes.
01:46 In their conservation efforts, Zaid said WWF is now tagging and tracking these terrapins
01:52 to study their movements and behavior.
01:55 Seahorses are less popular than other wildlife,
01:59 such as sea lions, elephants, and other popular animals.
02:03 We think that the reason is that their appearance is not very attractive.
02:08 And the most important thing is that they are less vulnerable.
02:12 We should be grateful because in this world, not all countries have it.
