Diamond Select Marvel Select Red Hulk Figure
Transcript
00:00 it looks like Thunderbolt Ross has found ways to cope with his rage. here's your
00:04 look at the diamond select Marvel select Red Hulk special collectors edition
00:08 action figure.
00:27 a gruff seasonal military general Thaddeus Thunderbolt Ross oversaw the
00:31 infamous gamma bomb experiment that led to dr. Bruce Banner's fateful
00:35 transformation into the Hulk. General Ross innate dislike of Banner gave way
00:39 to a full-on hatred for the Hulk and he made his life's obsession to hunt down
00:43 and eliminate the Jade Giant by any means possible even undergoing an
00:47 experimental radiation procedure to match the Hulk's own strength. emerging
00:51 as the fiery red menace Ross ultimately chose a more heroic path decided to let
00:56 go of his hatred for Banner at least mostly and led his colossal strength to
01:00 the forces of good as the Red Hulk. this Marvel select action figure of Red Hulk
01:04 is based on his appearance in Marvel comics. it features 16 points for
01:08 articulation. Ross may be the one that hates the Hulk but it's everybody else
01:12 that's seeing red. just before of course we get a closer look at the Marvel
01:16 select Red Hulk I'd like to thank the folks over at Diamond Select that did
01:19 provide the sample we could have a look at. Red Hulk is a big one. he's actually
01:23 about nine and a half inches in height or the figures 24 centimeters tall. I
01:27 know several years back I had looked at a Red Hulk also from Diamond Select. a
01:32 pretty dated figure by today's standards. it's nice to finally get ourselves an
01:35 upgrade. I don't have that original Red Hulk anymore nor do I actually have a
01:39 Hulk in my collection. there was the also Hulk that had the cybernetic robotic
01:43 face. I don't have that one either but what I do have though is a couple of big
01:47 ones we can bring in for comparisons. starting first with an average sized
01:50 figure here's what Red Hulk looks like with Captain America. of course then to
01:54 bring in a couple of big boys here's what the figure looks like with Juggernaut.
01:57 still one of my all-time favorite Marvel select figures. Jugs unfortunately has
02:01 started to develop a little bit looseness as you can see in his lower
02:04 knee area but the figure still manages to stand and boy does he stand
02:08 impressively. we also looked at here lately on the channel a Beta Ray Bill
02:11 that's one we can bring in for comparison. he was a pretty big figure
02:14 but not as big as the Red Hulk. and here's also what the figure looks like
02:17 with the Thing. pretty good timing that we're looking at the Red Hulk with
02:22 Captain America the brave new world coming out to silver screens and
02:24 Harrison Ford this time around playing Thunderbolt Ross. why I say this time
02:28 around is because every time we've gotten a new Hulk movie a different
02:31 actor has played the role. Ford might though be the only exception where this
02:34 time around he may be turning into the Red Behemoth. the fact that there's
02:37 another figure company has already teased a Red Hulk build-a-figure wave. I
02:41 suspect the Red Hulk will be making an appearance sooner rather than later. for
02:45 the appearance of the accessories though unfortunately it's slim pickings on this
02:48 figure as the figure only comes in clear with a pair of mauling hands. if we
02:51 haven't already gotten this mold or plan for this mold to be a Green Hulk
02:54 version I suspect either way the hands probably are gonna be used again for
02:58 that version of Hulk as they're suitable hands really for any Hulk figure
03:01 whether it be red or not. the hands themselves look a little stumpy when it
03:05 comes to the fingers but the actual fingernails to their credit have been
03:08 painted nicely in dark gray. the hands themselves can be easily swapped out
03:11 which is one of the things that are really good about the Marvel Select
03:14 figures. you never really have to worry about fighting and breaking pegs off. the
03:18 hands are always really very easy to remove. very stumpy little squat pegs. you
03:22 can just pop those right off replace them then with the mauling hands. just
03:25 plug those in place. you want to do on both sides? okay. pop that hand
03:30 off from the forearm. pop the new hand then in place and now you've got the
03:33 Hulk now with grabbing hands. suitable hands really again for this kind of
03:37 sculpt. now really we did get a Red Hulk years ago. in fact I looked at it here on
03:42 this channel and not that I would really promote the idea of you guys going back
03:45 and looking at my older videos. some of them are a little cringe but that
03:48 original Hulk I still wish I had in my collection as it's one of the earliest
03:52 Hulks I had in my collection. I just eventually parted ways with it. it would
03:56 be safe to say and it'd be safe to assume that the head sculpts on this one
03:59 is much better than the original release. I do remember that the original Red Hulk
04:02 did have a grimaced or shining smiling teeth like this although it wasn't as
04:06 done as nicely as we're getting here this time around. not only are the teeth
04:10 done well, you can see even that they've outlined each of the individual
04:14 teeth or they may have even meticulously gone in there and painted each of the
04:18 individual molars just to ensure that the Hulk has a perfect looking smile. I
04:21 do like the way they've also sculpted the eyes. slightly recessed them. it looks
04:26 like they've added a slightly darker airbrushing around that as well so that
04:29 those tiny little yellow peepers stand out a lot better. head sculpt is
04:33 fantastic on this figure. the hair as well. this time around instead of having
04:36 black hair, Red Hulk tends to have more gray hair and that's been nicely done
04:40 here as well. the only thing I would say though and if you've collected any Hulk
04:44 figures you tend to know that the problems that you should go with that
04:46 is just he's got so much going on here mass wise that it's always really tricky
04:50 to get the head to actually move anywhere. I mean not that we want to rush
04:53 along to the figures articulation already but really I mean that's as far
04:57 down as you can get the head to go and that's as far up as you want to get the
05:00 head to go unless you do what I just did you pop the head off the ball joint. in
05:04 the opener of this review I actually had the Red Hulk somewhat running and to do
05:08 that in order to get the head higher up I just basically popped the head off. I
05:11 kind of just lodged it back onto the ball joint so I could actually get the
05:15 head in a position where it would look like he was looking upright because
05:18 without that that way the head is so recessed down onto the ball joint it's
05:22 really impossible to get the head even look higher up like this. so again you
05:25 can kind of cheat you can just bring the head and kind of just pop it onto the
05:28 ball joint without fully committing to the idea of popping the head all the way
05:32 down. unfortunately though it does look very obviously like I've just got it
05:35 resting only on the ball joint when you see it from the side but from the front
05:39 at least it pulls off somewhat of a believable look of Hulk looking forward.
05:43 let's just pop that all the way down though to it. the rest of the figure's
05:46 body again I'm sure we're probably gonna be getting this for an already if it
05:49 hasn't already been released a green version of the Hulk because the body
05:52 wise proportionately I mean they're pretty much built the same way. the large
05:56 size of his mask. the thing that's interesting though about the Hulk though
05:59 is that he's not the same weight as juggernaut. if you have collected any
06:04 any Marvel select figures, it didn't have to be really Hulk, but like Abomination,
06:08 any big figures for example, Thanos also was another good example. the plastic
06:12 even though it's big like this doesn't equate the same amount of weight. in fact
06:17 again like juggernaut that we brought in earlier for comparisons actually is a
06:20 even though he's shorter is heavier than Red Hulk. it may have also something to
06:25 do with the type of plastic that they're using. it's clearly more a different kind
06:28 of plastic than what they really were using with the original
06:31 Marvel select days. back years ago even like the thing for example if I bring
06:35 back in the thing just reaching off to the side thing smaller yes than Red Hulk
06:40 but he's actually heavier of a figure and it's just again the type of plastic
06:43 that they're actually using for the older figures versus the newer ones. the
06:46 newer ones not that I want to say have like a rubberiness to them but if you
06:50 feel them they feel like there's a different kind of smoothness to the
06:53 plastic versus the original ones and that might maybe be the reasoning why a
06:56 figure as big as he may be isn't as heavy as smaller figures. the arms again
07:02 there's not really a lot of paint happening here. the one thing I will say
07:04 though about the arms is if you're looking at the way that the arms are and
07:07 then you look at this torso notably like his arms are a little on the more shinier
07:11 side where he has more of a matte finish or a satin finish across his torso so
07:15 his arms look strangely shinier than his torso. it's not a deal-breaker at all. of
07:20 course his lower pants are all ripped away ripped away open on the knees
07:24 obviously and then you got the little tattered bottom sections here. I love the
07:27 way that these actually have been sculpted with softer plastic so it isn't
07:30 just the case that they just painted onto the actual legs. they know have gone
07:34 in there and sculpted each of the individual tears so they're softer
07:37 plastic and they stick out just giving a little bit more of a nice contrast. on
07:41 the back though he's very tight around the behind. again you've got some nice
07:46 stretched areas there where you can see it's wrapped around his larger frame.
07:49 it's again a really nice looking figure. I do really wish I'm really disappointed
07:53 in fact I don't have that original Red Hulk because I would have loved to gone
07:56 in and bring this guy the original one back in so you guys can see really how
07:59 much better the newer Red Hulk is versus the original that we get from before and
08:03 I think even then that Red Hulk was again a variation. I don't think it was
08:07 maybe it was a Disney Store exclusive if memory serves me correctly but
08:11 definitely this is a much better looking Red Hulk. now for his articulation I
08:15 know we've already kind of spent a little bit of time talking about it. the
08:17 head as it is right now if it's fully attached to the ball joint it's only
08:21 gonna go that far up. it's only gonna well it's gonna look further down a lot
08:24 better but if you want to have him looking upright if you want to have him
08:27 running towards something Hulk can only go that high. you can't do anything more
08:31 than that other than just again popping the head off the ball joint. you can kind
08:34 of force it off just enough that you can bring it up a little bit higher if you
08:37 want to have him looking forward but again like as it is right now you heads
08:41 rocks back and forth this way also as well. for the arms now with the way that
08:45 the arms are designed there's so much mass happening. basically it's mass
08:48 everywhere on this figure but with the way the tops of the shoulders are it
08:51 only allows really the arms to go out about 45 degrees. you can't get any further
08:56 past that. you take the arms and rotate them all the way around so that's at
08:59 least good. you can rotate at the bicep. single again hinge on the elbow. I know
09:03 some people really don't like the idea that these Marvel select figures only
09:06 really have single hinges. I mean really like when you get a figure like this big
09:09 why do you really necessarily need to have double hinges on the elbows? I mean
09:13 I think it gets the job done for what little it has to work with. even just a
09:16 single hinge still gives you what 90 degrees? I mean I don't think I really
09:20 need anything more than that especially for a figure like Red Hulk. arms our
09:23 hands rotate all the way around. you can of course hinge those hands back and
09:26 forth as well. the figure has an upper torso ball joint. the figure has a waist
09:30 swivel although it's really really tight in my figure. ball joints on the legs so
09:34 the legs can split out about that far. you can take the legs and move forward
09:37 you can move them back both halfway maybe a little halfway up the thigh or
09:41 so there's a swivel cut so you can rotate the leg all the way around. the
09:44 figure does have a double hinge on the knee unlike only a single hinge in the
09:48 elbow. double hinge on the knee is really definitely good although again like with
09:51 the size of his mass there's really hard it's a hard way to get this figure in
09:54 any other pose that really does rely on the double hinges. I mean yes you could
09:58 probably use yourself like a flight stand but just with the amount of
10:01 plastic that goes into this guy you probably will just end up having this
10:04 guy firmly planted on his feet. speaking of his feet though his feet do have an
10:08 ankle pivot so not only can they move back and forth this way not much really
10:12 to work with but he does have again a much appreciated ankle pivot and he does
10:16 have peg holes on the underside of his feet. so yeah there's decent levels of
10:20 posability going with this guy. it goes without saying though he's not gonna
10:23 have as much posability as say for example Captain America. Red Hulk looks
10:27 good though. Red Hulk looks really good. I already mentioned I'm sure
10:31 Diamond Select probably is gonna be using this body mold again for a future
10:33 Hulk or in fact going back to the other Hulk that we had looked at that had the
10:38 robotic face. I did a review of him but unfortunately my friend was really
10:41 interested in getting that Hulk and I said you know what I'm probably never
10:44 gonna be displaying this guy in the show. I kind of just want a regular OG
10:48 looking Hulk and I'm just kind of gifting it to him. so he ends up having
10:51 it right now. I'm sure they probably did use somewhat of the same mold. you guys
10:55 can certainly let me know down below in the comment section. Hulk goes without
10:58 saying. I mean whether it's Red Hulk whether it's Green Hulk I'm sure if
11:01 Diamond can get the most out of their mold they're probably gonna be using the
11:03 same body again but yeah like the look of Red Hulk. I'm you know disappointed in
11:07 one way that I didn't have the chance to bring in the original Red Hulk that I
11:10 had years ago. you guys can all again always go back and look at those older
11:13 reviews really if you wanted to. I'll give you a bit of a warning some of the
11:17 older videos a little harder and rougher obviously quality wise and maybe even
11:20 the reviewing wise a little harder to kind of get through but obviously if you
11:23 guys did want to go back and have a look at those. marginal I mean considerable
11:27 not even marginal considerable changes have been made with the newer stuff that
11:29 we're getting for Marvel select figures from Diamond select. not only are we
11:33 getting a better looking Red Hulk but again like potentially can be made there
11:37 that even if they haven't used the body just yet there's always a potential that
11:41 they can use this body again for the Jade giant instead of one we're getting
11:44 here in red. that other Red Hulk I still wish I had so I could bring them in for
11:48 comparisons. it was released I believe in 2008. doing though the simple math behind
11:52 that that's like 16 years. 16 years that Diamond select has had the chance to
11:56 not only improve but perfect the mold for Hulk and I think they have with the
12:00 newer release here. though the original Hulk if I still had that would be
12:03 probably still heavier than this one as even with juggernaut and thing - larger
12:08 size Marvel select figures that I still have in my collection though shorter
12:11 were still heavier than the red behemoth here. something though within the span of
12:15 16 years though they've improved the molding on the figure something though
12:18 that they haven't improved on sadly is the use of display stands. this guy
12:23 doesn't come included with one and all the Hulk's from years ago would have all
12:26 came in with like vac form plastic stands. hollow on the bottom but at least
12:31 it had like ruins or something you could display the figure on top of. while this
12:35 figure definitely has a better looking likeness to Red Hulk the thing it lacks
12:38 unfortunately though is a display stand and that it's not a deal-breaker the
12:42 fact that he doesn't come included with one but I think that that's a trend that
12:45 all the older Marvel select figures would have had that I wish that Diamond
12:48 Select would still continue the trend with. granted I understand that molding a
12:51 figure larger like this you have to cut back on the cost of accessories so he
12:56 doesn't have as much say for example as Captain America but I think there was
12:59 still an opportunity to throw in a pretty cool looking display stand. if I
13:02 still had that original Red Hulk I could have probably just pillaged the one from
13:05 him and used it for this guy instead. what do you guys think of Red Hulk? let
13:09 me know down below in the comment section. do you also feel as well like
13:11 Thunderbolt Ross is gonna turn in eventually into the Red Hulk in the new
13:15 Captain America movie or do you think it's only gonna be teased with maybe a
13:17 future battle down the road? it's ironic though that Disney is against the idea
13:21 of bringing in the Jade Giant as a standalone film. like Green Hulk has
13:26 yet to get a solo film except for the last one that we got like how many years
13:30 ago? I mean that's the last time we got a Green Hulk movie and yet we're okay to
13:34 throw in the Red Hulk. do you think he's gonna be making an appearance in the
13:37 Captain America movie? let me know down below in the comment section. big thank
13:39 you by the way to the folks over at Diamond Select that did provide this
13:42 sample of the Marvel Select Red Hulk that we had the chance to have a look in
13:46 this review. good news though by the way collectors this guy is available right
13:49 now either in comic book stores or hey online if you prefer to shop online
13:52 instead he is available as of right now. if you guys did enjoy this video (boy that
13:58 was very assertive wasn't it?) if you guys did enjoy this video why not throw it a like
14:00 do it a solid. if you guys want to stick around for more though there's always
14:04 the available option of hitting that subscribe button down below and just
14:07 next to it so you don't have to walk very far there's also as well the Bell
14:10 notification. between those two things will ensure that you're always going to
14:14 be in the know the 411s of whenever new content is popping up on this
14:18 channel. we may also be wrapping up things right now for Red Hulk but just
14:21 looking off to the side you can't see it but there is also a figure of equal
14:25 size and possibly equal weight as well he will be coming back I said he will be
14:29 coming out in an upcoming review. what is it? what is it? you're just gonna have to
14:33 stick around and find out. make sure yeah you're coming back here on a regular
14:36 basis as always guys thanks for watching see you guys next time
14:42 you
