00:12:34 and that kind of first built that cushion, right?
00:12:37 That little arm's length cushion
00:12:39 where they put it at 10, 12, 14,
00:12:41 and they kind of kept them away there.

00:12:47 They played really well.
00:12:48 It was an all around solid effort from the bench there.
00:12:52 And you see how Cleveland's using a lot of guys,

00:12:59 Cleveland went deep into that bench.
00:13:04 And they're just using some guys that just can't play.
00:13:09 And yeah, Wade'll make a little bit of a difference,

00:13:15 I mean, he's not a game changer,
00:13:17 and he's not gonna have a game ever in his life
00:13:20 like he did last time he faced the Celtics,
00:13:23 but it's better.
00:13:24 You gotta bump, I mean, again,
00:13:26 I know Morris started two games ago.
00:13:28 He's still only got nine minutes.
00:13:29 Tristan Thompson, 16 minutes.
00:13:31 Some of those came in garbage time as well.
00:13:32 You can't be relying on these guys

00:13:36 and have anybody take you seriously.
00:13:37 And that's what I wrote in my prediction.
00:13:39 I was like, these guys are playing minutes for this team.
00:13:42 There's no way.
00:13:43 It's Mitchell has to go off.
00:13:46 Mitchell's gotta play him 48,
00:13:47 and he's gotta go off for 50,
00:13:48 and Garland's gotta catch fire,
00:13:51 or else they're cooked.
00:13:52 They just don't have it.

00:13:58 I mean, even Dean Wade,
00:14:00 he was a guy that went off on the Celtics back in March,

00:14:05 but even he's out for this match.
00:14:07 So the Cavs are undermanned to begin with,
00:14:10 without Wade, without Allen,
00:14:13 and their bench is weak, man.
00:14:15 I mean, their bench is overt and nobody, really.
00:14:19 For some reason, Nyang's not getting any burn anymore.
00:14:22 He was the player last year.
00:14:25 It seemed like he was gonna have a real impact
00:14:27 on this Cavs team,
00:14:27 but apparently he's fallen out of the rotation a bit,
00:14:31 and he can barely even get on the court in a blowout loss.
00:14:33 - He's not a good defender.
00:14:35 I mean, I'm being very kind
00:14:37 when I say he's not a good defender.
00:14:39 You look at the way this Cleveland team's built,
00:14:42 they're built around guys who can play both ends of the court,
00:14:44 maybe not great, but certainly decent, and he's just not.
00:14:49 And he doesn't shoot the ball well enough
00:14:51 to compensate for what you're losing
00:14:53 at the other end of the floor.
00:14:55 And Max Strews came, Max Strews was the one guy
00:14:58 from Cleveland I was a little surprised
00:14:59 he didn't play better,
00:15:01 not just because he's a former Celtic,
00:15:02 but when you look at his,
00:15:04 the numbers that he has had against the Celtics,
00:15:06 not in terms of scoring, but just impact.
00:15:08 Like Tatum does not score the ball well
00:15:11 when Max Strews is guarding him.
00:15:12 At least that's the way it was during the regular season.
00:15:15 And tonight, Tatum didn't have a great game shooting the ball,
00:15:17 but again, as John pointed out,
00:15:19 at the end of the day, he still gets a double double.
00:15:22 And at the half, it was a triple double watch
00:15:25 'cause I think he had like four assists at the half.
00:15:28 So, you know, Cleveland's in a heap of trouble.
00:15:33 And again, they had a good season.
00:15:37 I know it's only one game.
00:15:38 I know we shouldn't be talking about the next round,
00:15:40 but dammit, there's just nothing about this Cleveland team
00:15:42 that inspires me to think that they can do anything
00:15:44 other than just show up,
00:15:47 take that ass looking like an adult,
00:15:49 and go back to Cleveland.

00:18:21 But the fact that they do have all those other options,
00:18:23 the fact that Jalen Brown can drop 20 points,
00:18:27 you know, in the first half,
00:18:28 and the fact that Derek White can hit seven threes,
00:18:31 Tatum doesn't have to feel like he needs to overdo things
00:18:33 and force things and, you know,
00:18:36 take ridiculous shots that we've seen in past years
00:18:39 and that we've got on him for.
00:18:40 So, yeah, it might feel like he's less aggressive
00:18:43 or deferring or just not a part of the action.
00:18:46 That might actually all be true,
00:18:48 but it's because the Celtics are having success
00:18:51 in that game during that moment.
00:18:53 He's not required to put up 30 shots
00:18:55 and then score 40 points in a game like this.
00:18:58 And that's the difference between Donovan Mitchell
00:19:00 and Jason Tatum, really, is the situation that they're in.
00:19:03 You can go out and say, "Oh, Mitchell's
00:19:05 a much better offensive player than Tatum."
00:19:06 And there's probably some stats that would back that up.
00:19:09 I think more than anything, situation.
00:19:12 Donovan Mitchell has to score 40 points a game
00:19:15 if the Cavs want to have a prayer.
00:19:16 He scores 33 tonight, they don't have a prayer.
00:19:18 Even if he did end up 40, they wouldn't have had a night.
00:19:21 But point being is, he needs to look for his shot
00:19:23 almost every single time down the court
00:19:25 because who the hell else is going to be doing that?
00:19:27 Whereas for the Celtics, I mean,

00:20:26 they're on borrowed time or teams like Cleveland,
00:20:29 teams like New York, and they're having a great stretch,
00:20:31 but how many games are you going to be able to win
00:20:34 when one guy is scoring like 45 points
00:20:36 and you're playing a team that has three or four guys
00:20:39 that can go and get you 30 or 40, the way the Celtics do?
00:20:42 That is how you build a championship contender
00:20:45 in this day and age.
00:20:46 You can't win with one or two trick ponies.
00:20:48 You've got to have multiple guys,
00:20:51 both from your starting unit and from up your bench.
00:20:53 You can impact the game.
00:20:54 Cleveland just doesn't have that.
00:20:56 I mean, Donovan Mitchell obviously is a great player.
00:20:58 Garland, I think, is a really good player.
00:21:01 And then after that, it's crickets.

00:21:08 The Celtics, I mean, you've got your two all-stars.
00:21:10 You got Derek White, you got Drew Holiday,
00:21:12 you got Al Horford, you got Pritchard giving you 10 points
00:21:15 and a buzzer beater, you know, the end of quarter.
00:21:17 You got freaking living square, Luke Cornett,
00:21:20 getting you 10 boards and a putback jam.
00:21:23 That's how you win a championship.
00:21:25 And the point that you made earlier about, you know,
00:21:28 Cleveland, they don't have Jared Allen,
00:21:31 which obviously impacts them.
00:21:32 But most teams that win championships,
00:21:34 at some point or points along that journey,
00:21:37 they face teams that don't have the full complement.
00:21:39 Golden State's first championship came
00:21:41 where they went the entire postseason
00:21:43 with at least one starter on the opposing team,
00:21:47 either not playing at all in the series
00:21:48 or missing some significant time.
00:21:50 So it's one of those benefits that just falls in your lap

00:23:11 Whereas I felt like the offense was flowing a little bit
00:23:14 and then Tatum would try to kind of figure out
00:23:16 what it is I'm supposed to be doing here tonight.

00:23:21 'cause you're gonna need it some,
00:23:22 you're gonna need it, you're gonna need it.
00:23:24 I've always said, it's just,
00:23:25 everything felt a tick slow for him.
00:23:27 Like, I don't know, that's how he felt all night to me.
00:23:30 Like he was, he just wasn't.
00:23:31 You look at that, and you're not gonna compare
00:23:33 Brown and Tatum's athleticism.
00:23:35 Brown plays with more pace, more physicality,
00:23:38 more aggression, he's certainly more assertive.

00:23:44 offensively just out of sync all night.

00:23:48 I thought he played, you know, decent, you know, defense.

00:24:59 is that that ankle is giving him a little bit of discomfort,

00:25:12 because he knows his running mate is gonna have to kind of
00:25:15 work his way into the game a little bit,
00:25:17 whereas he doesn't have to, Jalen.

00:40:54 Al Horford in the fourth quarter,
00:40:56 I thought did some good things.
00:40:57 You start going down this, or third quarter rather,
00:40:59 you start going down the line
00:41:01 and they've got so many different guys
00:41:02 that can impact the game.
00:41:03 But the one guy that seems to always have that moment
00:41:06 almost every game is Derek White.
00:41:08 He'll have four or five minutes every night
00:41:11 where he's basically the best guy on the floor.
00:41:13 And he's scoring in a multitude of ways.
00:41:15 He's even getting to the point now
00:41:16 where he's breaking guys down.
00:41:18 Whereas before, he's just splashing a three ball
00:41:21 or finishing at the rim,
00:41:22 but he's actually using his handle
00:41:23 to create space and pull up on guys.
00:41:26 And his defense is, I mean,
00:41:28 he's one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA.
00:41:32 This wasn't just, it was a really good game for Derek White,
00:41:35 but it's kind of like an average Derek White kind of game.
00:41:38 He just had that stretch in the third where he had 14 points
00:41:41 that they had no answer for him at all.
00:41:43 And that's the beauty of the Celtics team.
00:41:46 They have guys that can dominate games
00:41:49 and there's nothing that you as a defense can do about it
00:41:52 because the minute you start latching onto that one player,
00:41:55 you gotta worry about Tatum, you gotta worry about Brown,
00:41:57 you have to worry about Duralde, Al Horford,
00:41:59 Sam Houser, Peyton Purchase, go on.
00:42:03 And you can go on and on and on about the guys
00:42:05 that they have who have those stretches.
00:42:07 And then you look across the way at Cleveland,
00:42:10 you might get a good, what, 45 seconds
00:42:12 out of someone not named Donovan Mitchell, maybe?
00:42:17 And you're not gonna win a game
00:42:19 when a guy plays great for 45 seconds.
00:42:21 And you only got one guy who can do that.
00:42:24 So the Celtics, this is an ideal matchup for them
00:42:29 to just kind of basically practice what,
00:42:32 get some guys in the mix, get guys in a nice rhythm,
00:42:35 and then go home and win.

00:42:39 I mean, it wasn't too long ago where everyone was saying,
00:42:42 man, if you could just get like 15 points from Derek White,
00:42:45 like you give yourself a good chance at winning.

00:44:02 If you're gonna go heavy on Tatum
00:44:03 or you're gonna focus on Brown,
00:44:04 he's just been the guy that has just made you pay for it

00:44:08 And he doesn't make mistakes.
00:44:09 Rarely does he make mistakes out there on either end.
00:44:12 So having that additional option out there
00:44:15 has just been a godsend.
00:44:16 I mean, especially for Tatum and for Brown,
00:44:18 if they don't have it on a certain night,
00:44:20 White's been the guy that's just been able
00:44:21 to sort of take the reins and just run with it.
00:44:23 You know, most nights it's White doing that.
00:44:26 Like you said, Sherrod Holliday is a guy that,
00:44:29 you know, they obviously depend on,
00:44:30 especially on the defensive end,
00:44:32 but White is, I said it off the top of the show,
00:44:35 he's your best player right now.
00:44:37 You know, Brown had a great game tonight
00:44:38 and Brown's been more consistent in the playoffs.
00:44:42 You know, I think than Tatum has, I think we could say.
00:44:47 They've been back and forth a little bit,
00:44:48 but right now, at this point in the season,
00:44:52 in the playoffs, Derek White's been your best player.
00:44:54 - And you're talking about the guy that's your best player
00:44:58 who's probably in terms of his overall team pecking order,
00:45:01 what, when everyone's healthy,
00:45:03 maybe a fourth, third, fourth best player?
00:45:07 - Well, that's like historically
00:45:10 how we thought about Sherrod, but I tell you what,
00:45:12 every single game he's creeping closer
00:45:13 and closer and closer.
00:45:15 You know, at some point,
00:45:16 you gotta really take a look at things and say,
00:45:19 damn, like where does this guy actually fall
00:45:22 on the totem pole?
00:45:23 He might be a lot higher up than we still keep saying.
00:45:27 - I just think teams sleep on him.
00:45:28 I mean, obviously the secret is out right now,
00:45:30 but I just think it's hard for teams
00:45:32 in the, during the game for them to say,
00:45:36 okay, let's just focus on trying to stop Derek White
00:45:39 because then you're gonna open the floodgates
00:45:40 to all the other options that's always have, you know?
00:45:42 So Derek White's been the main beneficiary,
00:45:45 but at the same time, he's continuing to,
00:45:48 this is like, he's not cooling off at any time soon.
00:45:51 You know, like this is a hell of a Terry's on right now,
00:45:55 three, four straight games.
00:45:57 And I just think that it's not gonna slow down
00:45:59 because of the constant threats you have
00:46:00 from Tatum, from Brown, you know,
00:46:03 even in the second unit, you know,
00:46:04 guys stepping up, paying pictures, scoring double figures.
00:46:07 So I think all of that is just a lot.
00:46:09 It's very overwhelming for the Cleveland Cavaliers right now.
00:46:11 I think we see a better effort in game two,
00:46:13 but man, I just spoke to Mobley and he's like,
00:46:16 yeah, I mean, there's no Porzingis,
00:46:18 but Al's stretching the floor, you know,
00:46:20 stretching us thin.
00:46:22 You got guys like Luke coming in back to back box,
00:46:24 you know, like these guys are making an impact.

00:46:48 One thing I wanna kind of dispel,

00:46:53 And yes, he's not getting Jason Tatum level of attention.
00:46:59 He's creating, he's finding the right spot
00:47:03 and just enough daylight to get off shots.
00:47:08 And as Ben Vallis put it here,

00:47:14 you get Celtics late night coming up after this,
00:47:17 literally almost perfect form.
00:47:19 It is so strange to think back at Derek White
00:47:23 and his floater game is great.
00:47:25 He's going to the basket.
00:47:26 His touch is phenomenal.
00:47:29 I'm sorry, it's not just the defender.
00:47:32 It's the spots he's scoring from
00:47:34 and how comfortable he is doing it.
00:47:37 Tatum can sometimes get there.
00:47:39 He's struggling a little bit with some of these,
00:47:41 with the three point shot and with,
00:47:43 in and around the rim sometimes
00:47:44 with a little middy floater sort of game.
00:47:46 White's just not, he's able to hit these.
00:47:49 And it's so crazy to think of this guy as a guy
00:47:52 we were just, every time he shot
00:47:55 that first year he was here, you're like,
00:47:59 you're just like, you had 25% vibes.
00:48:02 Bobby, I got to do this.
00:48:03 Yeah, 20, and now it's, I'm stunned when it's,
00:48:07 it looks like it's going to go down every single time.
00:48:09 It's almost perfect right now.
00:48:12 So it's not just the defenders.
00:48:14 He's doing it.
00:48:14 He's doing it.
00:48:15 - Yeah. I mean, he's doing it in transition.
00:48:17 He's doing it on the defense.
00:48:18 - Everything.
00:48:19 - Yeah. And you know what?
00:48:20 - That's stuff that they practice too.
00:48:23 That's something they probably,
00:48:24 sometimes he gets some of these like wacky passes
00:48:27 in practice just to see how he can get right
00:48:29 into a shot after the fact, you know,
00:48:31 because a lot of times that's what happens
00:48:32 in these situations, right?
00:48:33 You know, you get double teamed
00:48:34 and most of the time it's Derek White
00:48:36 that makes himself open and then has to make a play
00:48:38 under six, seven seconds.
00:48:40 And he's fine with it.
00:48:41 Like he has no problem taking on that pressure.
00:48:43 And he's, he's shown that he's very comfortable
00:48:45 in those situations, honestly.
00:48:47 - Bobby, what's going on?
00:48:48 - Yeah, this is amazing from White.
00:48:53 It just gets better and better.
00:48:55 Every game, every week, seven to 10 to start this game,
00:48:59 he improves to 52% from three through that point
00:49:02 in this post season.
00:49:04 And that's obviously going to come down to earth
00:49:06 at some point, but you get all the other stuff too here.
00:49:08 I mean, he's just a perfect player and he comes what?
00:49:11 Eighth in defensive player of the year voting today.
00:49:15 So you got that aspect of his game that's shining here too.
00:49:18 And the toughness, I mean, when you were here early, John,
00:49:22 the bump he gave and the paint to finish,
00:49:24 I think his first basket, you see that side of him too.
00:49:28 It's just awesome where he's at right now,
00:49:29 confidence-wise, especially.
00:49:31 And keep talking about, can you get him more shots?
00:49:34 Can you get more opportunity?
00:49:35 Luckily, these first two series have been such
00:49:37 because they're not just going to force feed him the ball.
00:49:39 They're not going to give him the most ball time.
00:49:43 Fortunately, the ball's flowing from the Jays to him
00:49:47 and great positions to score in rotation.
00:49:50 This is already looking pretty similar
00:49:52 to the way the Celtics had to attack the Heat in that series.
00:49:56 And he gets advantageous matchups against those guards.
00:49:58 This is going to be a ginormous White series.
00:50:01 Like we talked about coming into it,
00:50:02 it's probably not going to be as much of a Tatum series,
00:50:04 just like last round.
00:50:05 They're going to key in on him.
00:50:07 He's not going to shoot great.
00:50:08 And he's just going to have to keep the ball moving.
00:50:10 So White can have the game he had
00:50:11 and Brown can have the game he had.
00:50:13 - Let me ask this question,
00:50:14 because I think we all agree you don't need it
00:50:17 to be a Tatum series to win at times.
00:50:21 Is there another superstar first all NBA player anywhere else?
00:50:26 And maybe it's more a credit to the Celtics team
00:50:29 than it is a knock on Tatum.
00:50:30 And it kind of is,
00:50:31 but is there any other team where you would say
00:50:34 they don't need their best player really this series?
00:50:37 - No, but it's the credit to the team that the Celtics have
00:50:40 and that's why they built the team that they have.
00:50:42 - Crazy.
00:50:43 - To minimize those deficiencies.
00:50:44 - Yeah, I'm not saying it to be a total dig at Tatum.
00:50:46 When he wasn't in, I'm like, that's fine.
00:50:48 You know, look, they're fine.
00:50:50 - Right.
00:50:51 - Yeah.
00:50:52 - And he can't force stuff.
00:50:53 I mean, they cleaned up some of his messy shots,
00:50:55 Cornette especially, you know, on the reverse there early.
00:50:58 And they were just great following him and, you know,
00:51:01 being ready to get their opportunities away
00:51:04 from the pressure he saw out there.
00:51:06 And, you know, I think JB Bickerstaff was saying
00:51:08 that the Celtics hit a lot of tough shots in this game.
00:51:11 I don't know.
00:51:12 I'd have to go back and look at that.
00:51:13 That felt like a little bit of a excuse making from him,
00:51:16 but they, I think, flowed offensively great in this game.
00:51:20 There were a couple of those three, four passing sequences,
00:51:24 and I'm just not going to get caught up on the Tatum stuff.
00:51:26 You'd love for him to be shooting better.
00:51:29 You're probably going to need him to score a ton
00:51:32 in some spot in this post-season,
00:51:34 but as long as teams are going to continue
00:51:36 to guard them like this, and Brown and White
00:51:38 are going to continue to score this efficiently,
00:51:41 this is what you want to see.
00:51:42 Like, I don't think anyone would have any problem
00:51:44 if the Celtics win the championship
00:51:45 with Tatum shooting 40%.
00:51:47 There'd be nothing wrong with that.

00:51:52 I think people are concerned that they won't be able to win
00:51:54 if Tatum doesn't step it up.

00:52:26 that I think could have gone either way.
00:52:27 And you know what, what we said earlier, Bobby,
00:52:29 was that the difference between Tatum
00:52:31 and a lot of these other superstars
00:52:32 is that he doesn't have to score 40.
00:52:34 He doesn't have to put up 25 shots.
00:52:36 He doesn't have to shoot himself out of a slump,
00:52:38 necessarily.
00:52:39 So he kind of takes what the game gives him,
00:52:42 I think, more than some other stars.
00:52:44 Maybe that makes people think
00:52:47 that he's not aggressive enough.
00:52:49 But I think also he looks around and says,
00:52:52 okay, look at all the talent around me.
00:52:55 I'm not going to go make this about me in four shots
00:52:57 and try to get myself back into this game.
00:52:59 I'm going to give it to Jaylen Brown,
00:53:00 who's got 20 points in the first half,
00:53:02 or I'm going to give it to Derek White,
00:53:03 who has six three-pointers
00:53:05 and is about to hit a seventh, you know what I mean?
00:53:06 So I think that's the right way to play
00:53:09 if you're trying to win a championship.
00:53:11 And to your point, Bobby,
00:53:12 if they win a championship,
00:53:13 no one's going to care what anyone did.
00:53:17 I mean, those players probably will care,
00:53:18 and they might have personal goals
00:53:20 and accolades that they want to reach.
00:53:21 But if you're a Celtics fan
00:53:22 and you're raising the banner,
00:53:25 you're not going to be thinking about the stats
00:53:27 of each player that got you there.
00:53:29 And when you go back to '07-'08, Joe Sway,
00:53:31 there was a lot of passing the ball around,
00:53:35 a lot of teamwork,
00:53:36 and there wasn't one dominant player
00:53:38 that was leading the league in any specific category.
00:53:41 You had KG, who was leading the league
00:53:43 in chest pumps and trash talk,
00:53:47 and you had Pierce that was obviously
00:53:48 an extremely clutch player,
00:53:49 and Rayon, who was extremely automatic from three-point.
00:53:53 Everyone had a certain role.
00:53:54 So I think if you can get these guys
00:53:56 to embrace their roles
00:53:57 and to just contribute in whatever way that is,
00:54:00 then people are going to obviously,
00:54:01 or fans are going to obviously be okay with that.
00:54:04 - And he did take bad shots in this game.
00:54:06 The worst was the step back three over Tristan.
00:54:09 I mean, you have Tristan on you in the perimeter.
00:54:11 - That's annoying as hell.
00:54:12 I have never understood the setup,
00:54:13 the guy set up the slow big to shoot over the top of them,
00:54:18 unless they're playing 10 feet off of you, but he wasn't.
00:54:20 He's daring him to drive.
00:54:22 I find that one really weird, but yeah, exactly.
00:54:24 - There were a lot of those in this game, bad shot attempts.
00:54:27 And that's why I'd contrast this
00:54:28 against some of the games he had against the Heat.
00:54:31 He just took some poor shots in this game
00:54:34 and didn't get to his spots.
00:54:35 And there is still the settling.
00:54:38 There is still the, you know,
00:54:40 looking for calls or whatever it might be there.
00:54:43 I wouldn't, you know, there's a lot of situations
00:54:45 and I wasn't in on a ton of Joe.
00:54:48 I'm sure he said he had a great game
00:54:50 by just doing the other things out there.
00:54:53 But if the shot selection is taking you out of the games,
00:54:56 like Jimmy said, I don't think it was as much
00:54:58 what the Cavs did here.
00:54:59 The Heat, I think, switched and showed him two, three bodies
00:55:02 in a lot of that series.
00:55:03 I gave him a lot of credit
00:55:04 for the way he approached that series,
00:55:05 but this was just a rough shooting night,
00:55:07 a rough shot selection night at the time.
00:55:10 - This wasn't like the Heat at all
00:55:11 when they're sending bodies.
00:55:12 - And by the way, Bobby, he didn't shoot close to 40%.
00:55:15 So I don't know where you're coming up with that number.

01:01:16 He has taken his rebounding game to another level.
01:01:19 And that makes him a real asset in a series like this
01:01:21 because he doesn't have to guard the perimeter, Jimmy.
01:01:23 They're not gonna put him in actions.
01:01:25 They're not gonna pull him out.
01:01:26 They're not gonna switch him out to the perimeter.
01:01:28 So he can really just sit back at the rim,
01:01:31 block some shots, grab some rebounds,
01:01:34 and be a deterrent out there with his size.

01:03:48 and went on like a seven for 26 drought.
