00:00:00Can you say hard hats folks? Hard hats, lunch pails, steel tool, boots?
00:00:08Anything short of a championship this year is a failure.
00:00:10Look at this boomer right here.
00:00:12You've just got so much talent here.
00:00:14Somebody said we need to apologize for Jalen.
00:00:16Can I pull the John? What are we apologizing for?
00:00:18What did we say? What did we do?
00:00:30Here it is. We're live baby.
00:00:32There's the countdown guys. We are live.
00:00:34And you are looking at exactly what happened here.
00:00:36As the clock ticks down to zero.
00:00:38And the Celtics win.
00:00:40Banner 18 NBA Champions 2024.
00:00:42Beating the Dallas Mavericks.
00:00:44Four games to one.
00:00:46And looky, looky what we have here.
00:00:48Who's that guy?
00:00:50What?
00:00:52Hard hats, lunch pails, steel tool, boots?
00:00:54Anything short of a championship this year is a failure.
00:00:56Can you say hard hats folks? Hard hats, lunch pails, steel tool, boots?
00:00:59Hard hats, lunch pails, steel tool, boots?
00:01:01And Banner 18 John.
00:01:03What a game.
00:01:05What a series.
00:01:07What a team.
00:01:09What a season.
00:01:11What a banner to come John.
00:01:13Banner 18.
00:01:15Jimmy Disco.
00:01:17That's our surprise.
00:01:19We told you guys.
00:01:21We told you in the pre-game.
00:01:23We have a surprise for you.
00:01:25And that's a surprise.
00:01:27We have a surprise for you.
00:01:29And that surprise is Jimmy Toscano.
00:01:31Gerard Blakely in the hard hat.
00:01:33Gerard T.V. Garden.
00:01:35Celebrating the Celtics.
00:01:37Winning the NBA banner.
00:01:39NBA title here.
00:01:41Beating the Dallas Mavericks.
00:01:43Pretty easily we would say.
00:01:45What were we sweating about guys?
00:01:47What were you sweating about?
00:01:49Was I sweating?
00:01:51Yeah you were sweating.
00:01:53We were all sweating a little bit.
00:01:56Celtics would go on one and then go cold.
00:01:58Mavericks would just kind of hang around.
00:02:00But far enough away where you weren't.
00:02:02I mean I wasn't John Zanis level sweat.
00:02:04But I was you know.
00:02:06I wasn't ready to celebrate until like 4 minutes left
00:02:08in the fourth quarter when I said okay
00:02:10mathematically speaking Mavs have like
00:02:1276 points at this point.
00:02:14I don't expect them to somehow end up with 100.
00:02:16No listen.
00:02:18Once they got that double digit lead
00:02:20and they didn't let that go.
00:02:22I felt good about this.
00:02:25I mean Sam Hauser knocks down a 3.
00:02:27Gets a steal.
00:02:29Next thing you know that 3 point lead is a 10 point lead.
00:02:31And he just kept growing and growing from there.
00:02:33And we saw top 5 Tatum was in a building.
00:02:35We got the most emotional Tatum I think I've ever seen.
00:02:37Fist pumping.
00:02:39Waving to the crowd.
00:02:41Tired up.
00:02:43Attacking when he needed to.
00:02:45I would have liked to see a little bit more in that first half.
00:02:47But did what he needed to do.
00:02:49I think what did he have?
00:02:519 assists in the first half.
00:02:53Finding other ways to affect the game when that outside shot is not falling.
00:02:55It's okay.
00:02:57He's getting everybody involved.
00:02:59You already talked about guys like Hauser chipping in.
00:03:01He had a really great game from Holiday too.
00:03:03And that's even with him missing like
00:03:056 attempts at the rim.
00:03:07Yeah.
00:03:09And so guys were contributing.
00:03:11Derek White lost a couple of teeth.
00:03:13I mean guys.
00:03:15We didn't even mention.
00:03:17I don't want to say his name.
00:03:19I don't want Bobby's head to blow off.
00:03:22This place when they announced Porzingis into the game.
00:03:24A little too diverse I thought from him.
00:03:26But he really got.
00:03:28I thought he got a lot more comfortable with that second stint that he had.
00:03:30And I'll say it.
00:03:32He was effective for them.
00:03:34He definitely contributed to this win tonight.
00:03:36It wasn't just a decoy.
00:03:38I mean his second stint was much more effective.
00:03:40Because his first stint he was out there with Josh Green.
00:03:42And Josh Green just lit him up.
00:03:44Which Josh Green should.
00:03:46I mean Porzingis was not getting out defensively.
00:03:48They made some adjustments.
00:03:50They never allowed Dallas to get comfortable in this game.
00:03:52There was never a point where you felt that Dallas had the momentum.
00:03:54The tide was turning in their favor.
00:03:56And that is what championship teams do.
00:03:58Where you can put teams away.
00:04:00Bury them.
00:04:02Put the headstone on.
00:04:04Rest in peace Kyrie Irving.
00:04:06It's a wrap.
00:04:08It's a wrap.
00:04:10Best part.
00:04:12Not the best part.
00:04:14But maybe one of the top 5 best parts of winning this game tonight.
00:04:16We don't have to hear Kyrie Irving nonsense no more.
00:04:19It's done.
00:04:21It's a celebration here at the TD Garden.
00:04:23I think we got a pretty good shot here.
00:04:25But the confetti rain.
00:04:27Unlimited supply of confetti.
00:04:29I've never seen.
00:04:31You've been in a couple buildings.
00:04:33I don't know how that ranks.
00:04:35That was raining down.
00:04:37They borrowed some from Dallas game 4.
00:04:39They had a little left over.
00:04:41After they rained it down.
00:04:43Philly chipped in with some of their extra confetti too.
00:04:45That they haven't gotten to use against the Celtics as well.
00:04:48Let's friggin shit talk a little bit.
00:04:50Jimmy Toscano.
00:04:52What did you predict the series would end?
00:04:54Didn't I forget?
00:04:56What did I predict?
00:04:58You know what I predicted.
00:05:00Same as you John.
00:05:02Celtics in 5.
00:05:04I didn't buy the hype.
00:05:06Whatever the fake hype was coming out of the national media.
00:05:08I just didn't see it.
00:05:10It came down to what can Luka and Kyrie do for you.
00:05:12Honestly they couldn't do enough.
00:05:14Kyrie was basically the only one.
00:05:16Kyrie was basically non-existent.
00:05:18Aside from maybe a game and a quarter here and there.
00:05:20And Luka was like Luka light.
00:05:22You never got that Luka magic vibe.
00:05:24You never felt like he was engaged in these games.
00:05:26Like he needed to be for an NBA finals.
00:05:28And it felt like today this Dallas team.
00:05:30They didn't come here to win today.
00:05:32From the start they were flat.
00:05:34The Celtics let them hang around.
00:05:36But everything the Celtics went on.
00:05:38The Mavs didn't.
00:05:40It's not like the Mavs didn't have to answer.
00:05:42They didn't go on a run back.
00:05:45They just hung around for 15-20 points.
00:05:47It was never a really competitive game.
00:05:49Them getting back to Boston allowed them a safe in.
00:05:51That's all they wanted to do.
00:05:53I mean you look at the guys that were playing out of their minds in game 4.
00:05:55Guys like Derrick Lively.
00:05:57Had two points, four rebounds, five fouls.
00:05:59You look at Exum.
00:06:01You look at Hardaway.
00:06:03You go down the line of guys that were difference makers.
00:06:05They were just absolute trash.
00:06:07And they didn't want to play.
00:06:09They didn't want to play.
00:06:11They didn't want to play.
00:06:13And the guy that you mentioned right off the top.
00:06:15Kyrie Irving.
00:06:17The eminent domain that Celtics fans have in his head is scary.
00:06:19They're not even really going at him.
00:06:21It's over now.
00:06:23It's over.
00:06:25They weren't even going at him hard the way they did in the past.
00:06:27And all he could do was talk about how trying to basically have a little bit of revisionist history in his time as a Celtic.
00:06:29Bottom line is.
00:06:31It was the Kyrie PR tour.
00:06:33I don't know if he knew it was the finals.
00:06:35This was a great way to close that chapter.
00:06:37I agree.
00:06:39I think it was a great way to close that chapter.
00:06:42I agree.
00:06:44Not only do you get Banner 18.
00:06:46One more than the Lakers.
00:06:48But you do it putting to bed a guy that.
00:06:50Yeah.
00:06:52A storyline that you can forget now.
00:06:54You know.
00:06:56You know what.
00:06:58Jimmy doesn't forget.
00:07:00I mean I forgive.
00:07:02But I never forget.
00:07:04I'm past it.
00:07:06You know what it is.
00:07:08I'm officially better than it now John.
00:07:11It's beneath me.
00:07:13I don't even know what we're talking about anymore.
00:07:15Who?
00:07:17Kyrie?
00:07:19I got better things to do now.
00:07:21I got better things to do.
00:07:23I'm waiting for a banner to be raised next season.
00:07:25I don't have to worry about who used to play here.
00:07:27Who said this about what.
00:07:29Who cares about the city.
00:07:31You know what.
00:07:33If you don't like it.
00:07:35Get the F out.
00:07:37We're cool with who we got here.
00:07:39It's all love right now in the Celtics organization.
00:07:41And I'll tell you what.
00:07:43A few years ago guys.
00:07:45I thought we were hitting the lowest of lows.
00:07:47I'm talking about those seasons with Kyrie.
00:07:49Right after Kyrie.
00:07:51Teams just didn't seem to want to play in Boston.
00:07:53Players didn't seem to want to play here.
00:07:55Completely different vibe now.
00:07:57And it happened quick.
00:07:59You got to give the Celtics ownership a lot of credit.
00:08:01You got to give Brad credit.
00:08:03You got to give Missoula credit for stepping in the way he did
00:08:05when all hell broke loose.
00:08:08We've been at the top of the top basically since the beginning.
00:08:10It remains that way.
00:08:12I think it's.
00:08:14And another.
00:08:16A statement season from this team.
00:08:18And if you want to give Wick for a second his flowers.
00:08:20Take a look at the ownership around Boston right now.
00:08:22It's pretty dark and dismal in most cases.
00:08:24But Wick and that ownership team.
00:08:26Their number one goal is to bring home Banner 18 straw.
00:08:28They've been saying it for years.
00:08:30Whether it's fireworks.
00:08:32Going out.
00:08:34Getting the guys paying the tax.
00:08:36They gave Brad free will to do what he needed to do.
00:08:38And Celtics did.
00:08:40Players did the best.
00:08:42And Wick has been saying that.
00:08:44And I don't think Celtics fans really embrace that.
00:08:46He's willing to pay for a championship.
00:08:48He's a fan.
00:08:50And he's openly admitted that.
00:08:52I'm losing money with this team.
00:08:54But we wanted to give Banner 18.
00:08:56The GoFundMe for Wick is open by the way.
00:08:58We're going to eat that one.
00:09:00We've got to give props.
00:09:02We've got a ton of super chats that flooded in.
00:09:05Jason Tatum.
00:09:07200 bones here.
00:09:09Thank you very much guys.
00:09:11We're trying to get back to it.
00:09:13We do thank you guys.
00:09:15I'm trying to circle back to some of you.
00:09:17Don't miss the super chats.
00:09:19I was getting texts.
00:09:21Texts?
00:09:23These guys know your phone number?
00:09:25Some people have my phone number.
00:09:27Rookie mistake John.
00:09:29Tell them that's a rookie mistake.
00:09:31They could be friends too.
00:09:34My real name is not even John Zanis.
00:09:36I've got a target on my back right now.
00:09:38I really should have my back turned the other way right now.
00:09:40And I'm not even Greek.
00:09:42We have a merch announcement too.
00:09:44If you want to mention that.
00:09:46I don't yet because I'm trying to catch up on our super chats.
00:09:48And I will get to the merch announcement.
00:09:50I promise Jimmy.
00:09:52I promise we're going to get to that.
00:09:54It's important.
00:09:56It's big merch news.
00:09:58Stay on tuned.
00:10:00There is.
00:10:02Keep it on the topic you talked about.
00:10:04We talked about assembling this team.
00:10:06And there was some concern and some question
00:10:08as to whether WIC would go for it.
00:10:10And you had that issue where you're like,
00:10:12they don't want to go into the tax.
00:10:14They want that taxpayer savings that year.
00:10:16They didn't want to spend a little extra
00:10:18to make a team that was marginal
00:10:20maybe kind of marginal.
00:10:22They didn't want to spend a little extra
00:10:24to make a team that was marginal.
00:10:26They didn't want to spend a little extra
00:10:28to make a team that was marginal.
00:10:31Maybe kind of push across the finish line.
00:10:33And there was concern that like
00:10:35I don't know that they're going to do that.
00:10:37And then just bang, bang, boom
00:10:39just started frigging throwing cash
00:10:41all over the place.
00:10:43And again, it's impossible once again
00:10:45to not talk about it.
00:10:47But WIC goes to it right away.
00:10:49In fact, the question asked to WIC was,
00:10:51hey, you sensed that this wasn't going to be
00:10:53a championship team and you retooled it.
00:10:55And that's exactly what they did.
00:10:57You had to make hard decisions.
00:10:59You had to do what the Celtics did
00:11:01which is to enter the season as,
00:11:03if not prohibitive, like
00:11:05big time favorites
00:11:07to win.
00:11:09I know a lot of people thought Denver was lurking
00:11:11and that might be a tougher one.
00:11:13But we said, and it says it in our open,
00:11:15it's championship or bust and it has been all year.
00:11:17There really was only one acceptable result for this team.
00:11:19They took all comers all year long.
00:11:21I mean, look at this.
00:11:23We got all freaked out over
00:11:25a single loss to Dallas,
00:11:27a single loss to Miami,
00:11:29a single loss to, I don't even remember who the hell else
00:11:31they played, and a sweep of Indiana.
00:11:33Cleveland.
00:11:35I mean, and guess
00:11:37national media is going to go,
00:11:39well, they didn't play anybody
00:11:41and Dallas was weak and Kyrie
00:11:43didn't this and
00:11:45that's what they did.
00:11:47They put these guys
00:11:49lights out. 16-3.
00:11:51I know 16-2 would have been historic.
00:11:5316-3 is freaking
00:11:55ridiculous.
00:11:57They went 80-21
00:11:59on the season. It's banana
00:12:01land that they did this.
00:12:03All year long, start to finish, wire to
00:12:05wire, the best team in basketball and it ends with
00:12:07a championship. I don't know what else anybody
00:12:09could ask for here.
00:12:11They deserve everything that's coming their way
00:12:13and more and beyond that
00:12:15is, as Jimmy said,
00:12:17what are you going to say to the haters, Jimmy?
00:12:19I'm going to say hi, haters, all summer long.
00:12:21You're not going to see me
00:12:23in the YouTube comment section going back
00:12:25and forth. You're not going to see me going back
00:12:27and forth on Twitter with the haters
00:12:29and people are going to... because you know what a hater
00:12:31does, John? They just move the goalposts.
00:12:33They're just born to hate.
00:12:35They wake up, what can I hate today?
00:12:37That's what the trolls do. That's what the haters do.
00:12:39But if you're a Celtics fan, don't fall
00:12:41for that trap. Celtics did exactly
00:12:43what they set out to do. They were the best team
00:12:45from start to finish. They were the favorite to win the title
00:12:47and they did it. That's hard to do, as John
00:12:49mentioned, because you've got a target on your back. You've got all
00:12:51the expectations. When you win,
00:12:53a lot of times, when you're expected
00:12:55to win, it doesn't even feel good
00:12:57to win. It just feels like,
00:12:59okay, on to the next one. You know how
00:13:01relieved these guys feel right now? It's probably
00:13:03the first time, maybe
00:13:05months, maybe all season that they've actually
00:13:07felt actual joy,
00:13:09right? Because they've set
00:13:11out to do what they were
00:13:13expected to do. Not just what other people expected
00:13:15them to do, but what they expected to do. So
00:13:17mission accomplished and they deserve
00:13:19all the credit in the world. You will not
00:13:21see me going anywhere with it, because tomorrow morning, we
00:13:23already saw it. We saw a couple losers
00:13:25on TV recently. Joel Embiid
00:13:27and who was the other guy?
00:13:29Joel's a loser, I'm thinking.
00:13:31Joel and Paul.
00:13:33PG. PG, whatever
00:13:35it is. Paul George. Two guys
00:13:37who all they know how to do is lose.
00:13:39And they're going on TV
00:13:41and Embiid is saying,
00:13:43the Celtics can't be a dynasty because
00:13:45too many people were hurt or I was hurt.
00:13:47If Joel Embiid is
00:13:49the barometer for whether or not you're a dynasty,
00:13:51then there can't be a dynasty because he's always
00:13:53hurt. Here's the thing. A dynasty is when
00:13:55you win multiple championships.
00:13:57The Celtics haven't had a chance
00:13:59to be a dynasty, but the way they're built,
00:14:01think about this. Their best player
00:14:03is 26. Their second
00:14:05best player is 27. They
00:14:07have a 7 foot 2 inch mismatch
00:14:09inside-outside guy. They've got
00:14:11the best perimeter on the ball
00:14:13defender. They've got the best backcourt
00:14:15defensively. And a guy like Sam
00:14:17Hauser, and I've mentioned him earlier,
00:14:19Sam was mediocre
00:14:21at best throughout the playoffs, yet
00:14:23in the finals, clearly stepped his game
00:14:25up. This was, of all the playoffs
00:14:27series, the finals was the best one
00:14:29that Sam Hauser had in terms of consistency,
00:14:31big impact plays. So
00:14:33when you start looking at their top 7,
00:14:35and paint your picture,
00:14:37is anyone going to defend him
00:14:39at the end of a damn court?
00:14:41How does that happen over
00:14:43and over?
00:14:45He literally played
00:14:474 seconds in the first half.
00:14:49We're going to let him do it.
00:14:51He already did this to you.
00:14:53You're going to dribble the ball and shoot
00:14:55from half-court. That's all I want you to do.
00:14:57And if you're Dallas,
00:14:59you didn't see that coming.
00:15:01He does this all the time.
00:15:03That's what I'm saying. That's a Jason Kidd special.
00:15:05Oh, that makes me
00:15:07so happy. I can't stand Jason Kidd.
00:15:09That was such a chef's kiss there.
00:15:11That was such a moment.
00:15:13Real quick,
00:15:15Jimmy, you want to acknowledge the Super Chats.
00:15:17I want to talk about some of them on the screen.
00:15:19Daniel, thank you very much. Didn't watch many
00:15:21games this year. Listened to every
00:15:23garden report. You guys are the best.
00:15:25Said the Celtics hadn't been tested. Turns out there
00:15:27wasn't a team that could test them.
00:15:29$100 from Daniel. Thank you.
00:15:31Chad, I want to see constant Super Chats.
00:15:33Thank you so much. Appreciate that.
00:15:35I can't see the comments right now. It's killing me.
00:15:37But I'm going to watch this back tomorrow.
00:15:39Thank you, Timmy. Thank you, everybody
00:15:41who has thrown in here. Again, we do
00:15:43appreciate it, you guys. We're just happy
00:15:45to have you in here as we're going to talk
00:15:47into the night a little bit here.
00:15:49We're going to get some sound back.
00:15:51Bobby's heading into the locker room.
00:15:53Ahmet, Nick, Joe Sway,
00:15:55we've unleashed those guys on the court.
00:15:57We have no idea what's going to happen
00:15:59and what's coming back here.
00:16:01We'll get some sound on here.
00:16:03We'll get some video from the court and some
00:16:05cool stuff. Then afterwards, we want
00:16:07to tell all of you guys, we are
00:16:09going to, because as we said, it's a rare
00:16:11occasion where we have the entire Garden
00:16:13Report crew at the Garden. We're going to
00:16:15shut down this stream. We're taking over
00:16:17the Garden. Five minutes and
00:16:19we're going to do a Garden Report
00:16:21late, late night edition with all of us
00:16:23on the court together.
00:16:25We want you guys to hang out for that as well.
00:16:27We've got plenty to talk about as we go
00:16:29through here. Again, talking about
00:16:31the game stuff, starting
00:16:33at the top, guys,
00:16:35there was that concern
00:16:37about, well,
00:16:39did Dallas
00:16:41crack it? We talked about it
00:16:43in the pregame a little. Did the Mavericks
00:16:45unlock something, crack the code?
00:16:47As I said,
00:16:49as the show went on, I talked to myself
00:16:51completely out of that nonsense. I'm like,
00:16:53what's the code?
00:16:55Hardy and Exum, people were
00:16:57worried about Hardaway. I don't want to kill
00:16:59Bobby, but I'm going to kill Bobby. Bobby's worried
00:17:01about Derek Lively hitting threes.
00:17:03We went a little crazy.
00:17:05We got a little crazy. Some real
00:17:07galaxy brain shit. We had to make
00:17:09ourselves stay interested, I think.
00:17:11We made ourselves get a little crazy,
00:17:13I think, for sure.
00:17:15It kind of flipped back to what
00:17:17it was when the series began, which is
00:17:19a lot of really, really, really
00:17:21good players on the Celtics, a couple
00:17:23of really, really, really good players on the Mavericks,
00:17:25and then a few role players that you'll absolutely
00:17:27dare them to beat you, as long as you
00:17:29played disciplined. Honestly, the Celtics
00:17:31stuck to their game plan most of the night. If they don't
00:17:33smoke 15 bunnies, this
00:17:35thing is a 35-point
00:17:37laugher at this point. Defensively,
00:17:39they picked up full court. You knew
00:17:41right out of the gate they were serious. They picked
00:17:43up full court the entire game.
00:17:45They chased those guys. They hounded those guys.
00:17:47Their communication, their rotations on defense
00:17:49were great. That's always the thing.
00:17:51You could deal with a few
00:17:53stints of shit offense like they did.
00:17:55They went an eight-minute stretch between the third
00:17:57and the fourth there with eight points.
00:17:59You know what Dallas scored during that eight-minute stretch?
00:18:01Eight points.
00:18:03That was it. That was where
00:18:05the run was going to come
00:18:07if at all, and it didn't.
00:18:09Celtics went cold.
00:18:11They kept Dallas out of it, too, by
00:18:13challenging guys like Herb Jones to
00:18:15go ahead, shoot that
00:18:17top of the key three all you want.
00:18:19I don't care.
00:18:21Staying with Luka and Kyrie, making sure
00:18:23that the shots they hit were really tough shots.
00:18:25They did it all game, and that's what
00:18:27was a formula for success in the first three games,
00:18:29and they did it again.
00:18:31Right off the bat, the Celtics
00:18:33could not make shots, but then you look over,
00:18:35guess what? Dallas was even
00:18:37crappier. Dallas missed five of the first six
00:18:39shots. The Celtics were three for eight
00:18:41in that stretch, had a 9-2 lead,
00:18:43even though you knew their offense was going to get
00:18:45so much better, and that defense was
00:18:47not going to crack.
00:18:49It was going to be their
00:18:51possession after possession.
00:18:53The Celtics, again, to me, that
00:18:55set the tone for how this game was going to play out.
00:18:57They allowed their defense
00:18:59to really take center stage, which
00:19:01I don't think they did enough of that in
00:19:03the finals and, frankly, in the playoffs, but
00:19:05when they do that, that offense
00:19:07eventually come around, and again, I think Tatum
00:19:09I was a little
00:19:11surprised he did not, and we can talk more about this.
00:19:13I was surprised that he did not get MVP
00:19:15because I thought that it was
00:19:17relatively close coming into this game.
00:19:19I thought Brown was slightly ahead,
00:19:21but Tatum was so good in this
00:19:23game in almost every facet
00:19:25of play, and Jalen was solid,
00:19:27but I didn't think Jalen was particularly good.
00:19:29I thought he was sloppy.
00:19:31If you look at the
00:19:33totality of the finals, I can
00:19:35see why you give it to Jalen, but man,
00:19:37when the game mattered most,
00:19:39Tatum stepped up. I thought they
00:19:41allowed Tatum to be the guy more
00:19:43tonight. He had more opportunities. He had the
00:19:45ball in his hands. He did miss a lot of shots that
00:19:47you wanted to just be
00:19:49the final nail in the coffin, type three,
00:19:51but he had a better game
00:19:53five, I thought, than Brown overall, but to John's
00:19:55point, there was some situations where it just
00:19:57felt like maybe he was a little slow.
00:19:59It was a toss-up.
00:20:01I'm interested to see how close the voting was.
00:20:03I can see why you would vote for Jalen Brown, but if
00:20:05it was more like a complacency-biased thing, if you thought
00:20:07it was neck-and-neck, then yeah,
00:20:09I could see why people would have voted for Tatum tonight.
00:20:11Here's the thing, though,
00:20:13and you talked about it off the front. Nobody was scoring
00:20:15in front. Brown and Tatum were
00:20:17called to start this game. Drew Holiday really paced them to
00:20:19start things off, and he missed a couple bunnies, but
00:20:21this is the type of series that I
00:20:23think really sums up the Celtics
00:20:25this year because
00:20:27it's hard to figure out who the MVP was,
00:20:29and that's kind of how the season
00:20:31went. You had a stacked
00:20:33team, basically,
00:20:35and that's how they won in these playoffs.
00:20:37You didn't need 50-point performances from
00:20:39Tatum or Brown. You got
00:20:41your 25, you got your 30, and you got your 10 assists
00:20:43or your eight rebounds, and then you got
00:20:45another 20-plus from Holiday, or
00:20:47maybe it was Derek White that night,
00:20:49or it was Porzingis in Game
00:20:511 or whatever. So you had
00:20:53so much contributions.
00:20:55You already talked about Hauser. You know, I mean, you go down the line.
00:20:57You got contributions from everybody, which
00:20:59is how it happened all season long, so
00:21:01it's kind of fitting. I don't think this is the
00:21:03type of series that we're going to look back and be like,
00:21:05whoo, that Jalen Brown,
00:21:07he put the team on his back in the NBA Finals
00:21:09and got the MVP. No, it wasn't like that.
00:21:11Like you said, Shradd, they clamped down on defense.
00:21:13A lot how the 07-08
00:21:15team won games was on that defensive
00:21:17side of the ball. When the Celtics played
00:21:19that way, it didn't matter that they didn't
00:21:21have a guy that dropped 40. They had
00:21:23enough attacks from all
00:21:25over that somebody
00:21:27didn't want to give possession.
00:21:29You know, a guy we haven't said at all
00:21:31who a lot of the players have talked about
00:21:33coming into this game is Al Horne.
00:21:39Over two full regular seasons
00:21:41worth of playoffs.
00:21:43Thank you, Big Green.
00:21:45For him to get that
00:21:47reign. I believe he was
00:21:49the first starter that checked out of the game.
00:21:51And you can just tell that
00:21:53this meant the world to him.
00:21:55I talked to Tito for a little bit before the game.
00:21:57Warfords are going to get after it
00:21:59tonight.
00:22:01They're getting it in.
00:22:03They are getting it in hard and deservedly so.
00:22:05I mean, you know, his defense
00:22:07is not going to get as much
00:22:09attention in limelight because Luka's
00:22:11pretty damn special.
00:22:13Al's ability to more times
00:22:15and not hold his own defensively on those switches
00:22:17was one of the many keys for the Celtics
00:22:19to get this win.
00:22:23Real quick, Jimmy.
00:22:25I'm going to give Jimmy
00:22:27a little plug here
00:22:29as we're putting something on the screen.
00:22:31I'm looking at the teaser
00:22:33with a bunch of names. Can you see it?
00:22:35I can see it, yeah.
00:22:37I can see it. I'm looking down here for a second.
00:22:39This is what we call the names.
00:22:41This is the name drop T. This is what I'm calling the name drop T.
00:22:43I mean, it's pretty sub-explanatory.
00:22:45You've probably seen similar T-shirts
00:22:47floating around, but all year long,
00:22:49and again, no disrespect to the Stay Ready crew,
00:22:51but all year long, the team's been riding on these
00:22:53six names. I had to obviously put Al
00:22:55in there. There's no way I was going to keep Al out even though he's
00:22:57coming off the bench. These are the dudes
00:22:59that got you to where you needed
00:23:01to go. I think we're going to probably put together
00:23:03a Stay Ready crew T at some point, but
00:23:05bottom line is, they're the dudes
00:23:07that got you where you needed to be. There's the Banner
00:23:0918, pretty sub-explanatory. I like the
00:23:11white font
00:23:13with the green ampersand on the
00:23:15black T. Those are all
00:23:17available in the merch store right now.
00:23:19And then, you already know
00:23:21to the right of that. Look at that clean
00:23:23Banner 18 limited edition
00:23:25white hard
00:23:27hat. The green ones have been selling like crazy.
00:23:29These white ones are actually
00:23:31limited edition, folks.
00:23:33On the right side, there you go. Look at that.
00:23:35On the right side, the font changed.
00:23:37It says hard hats, lunch pails,
00:23:39Banner 18.
00:23:41Pretty self-explanatory.
00:23:43Definitely want to get those.
00:23:45I've been seeing them around the TD Garden.
00:23:47Honestly, these things I think we're going to start
00:23:49seeing pop up more and more and more.
00:23:51Just a shout-out
00:23:53to the mentality of the Celtics.
00:23:55You've got to just...
00:23:57It's one of those things, Sherrod. When the shots aren't following,
00:23:59you've got to find other ways to win that game.
00:24:01You've got to strap on the
00:24:03steel-toed boots. You've got to put on the hard hat.
00:24:05You've got to get that lunch pail, and you've just got to go to work.
00:24:07You've got to dig deep. You've got to play
00:24:09dirty. You don't win a championship
00:24:11without getting in the dirt.
00:24:13You don't. You look at every team that
00:24:15wins a championship, and they all have
00:24:17that dog.
00:24:19I'll say this.
00:24:21Not saying
00:24:23they didn't do it all season,
00:24:25but how many times did you
00:24:27see guys hit the deck for loose
00:24:29balls tonight?
00:24:31This was a season.
00:24:35More guys hit the deck
00:24:37going after balls tonight than I can
00:24:39remember. I'm not saying it as a knock.
00:24:41I'm just saying it happened
00:24:43all night long.
00:24:45Loose balls, scrambling.
00:24:47You do that. You win the 50-50s.
00:24:49You play hard. Again, a lot of shots
00:24:51in and out, some sloppy
00:24:53execution here and there, and a bunch of missed bunnies.
00:24:55They still won by 18.
00:24:57This was a 40-point game.
00:24:59If things went the other way,
00:25:01it was a totally dominating performance.
00:25:03A dominating performance.
00:25:05What did we say
00:25:07was most impressive about the first three wins
00:25:09as much as anything else? It wasn't always
00:25:11that they were doing everything that they wanted to do.
00:25:13They had a plan. They stuck to it, and they worked
00:25:15their freaking asses off. You just
00:25:17saw a teeny bit of letdown there in
00:25:19game four. Just a teeny bit.
00:25:21Wheels came off the wagon, and it got really ugly,
00:25:23but they got back to it.
00:25:25We'll never talk about that
00:25:27game again. That's the beauty of
00:25:29winning it five.
00:25:31We'll never talk about game four again. It means
00:25:33absolutely nothing. You didn't want a
00:25:35situation where you're going back to Dallas.
00:25:37The Celtics, to their credit, they've
00:25:39made sure that that wasn't a reality.
00:25:41For me, game four,
00:25:43I don't want to pretend it didn't happen because
00:25:45I think game four set
00:25:47the tone for the level of focus we saw in game five.
00:25:49There was no doubt in their minds
00:25:51that we're not going to let
00:25:53game four repeat itself.
00:25:55They came in here. I don't know
00:25:57if they would have been making the diving plays and
00:25:59the hustle plays and Derek White losing teeth
00:26:01if they would have played a pretty good game
00:26:03and wound up losing game four. They might have thought,
00:26:05we're just going to do a little bit more.
00:26:07They had to go back to the lab and say,
00:26:09look, we played like trash
00:26:11in game four.
00:26:13That can't happen again.
00:26:15We got to focus and lock in and handle our business.
00:26:17That's exactly what they did.
00:26:19You're right about that.
00:26:21I just don't want to go back to
00:26:23game four. I don't need to anymore.
00:26:25I simply choose not to.
00:26:27I can do that now.
00:26:29I'm only going to be thinking about
00:26:31game one, two, three, and five.
00:26:33I can't
00:26:35wait to see
00:26:37in two or three years just the classics.
00:26:39This is a classic.
00:26:41Just like we see Dave Carroll
00:26:43diving for the loose ball. We're going to see Derek
00:26:45White losing teeth. There's a picture of Derek White
00:26:47that's floating around social media.
00:26:49His teeth are all screaming at each other.
00:26:51He's the same guy. He got cut
00:26:53in one game. He's got stitches
00:26:55elsewhere. He's got teeth knocked out.
00:26:57Honestly, he was losing
00:26:59his hair and he shaved off his hair.
00:27:01He's going to
00:27:03get rid of the rest of that grill.
00:27:05Just let the whole thing go.
00:27:07Imagine how scary that dude
00:27:09would be.
00:27:11Full court, no teeth,
00:27:13no hair, no teeth, just a freaking straight up
00:27:15something out of Harry Potter.
00:27:17Is that true?
00:27:19That's what I'm thinking.
00:27:21It's working. It worked.
00:27:23That must have hurt me. I'm joking aside.
00:27:25That sucks.
00:27:27Yeah, that sucks, man.
00:27:29Pop some Advil in
00:27:31and get back out there, I guess.
00:27:33Get some cotton. Make sure to stop
00:27:35the bleeding.
00:27:37It's tough.
00:27:39I said this
00:27:41to you, John, after. I said, tomorrow, we're going to get a list
00:27:43of all the guys going in for surgery like they do
00:27:45in the NHL after they get eliminated.
00:27:47Derek White, new grill.
00:27:49Porzingis needs a new leg.
00:27:51Just go down the line with everything that these guys
00:27:53played hard on today.
00:27:55Jimmy, we have a request. Don't spend
00:27:57the next three minutes talking about this, please.
00:27:59We have a request for dresses. I just want to
00:28:01let you know.
00:28:03We got a lot of shirts. Dresses.
00:28:05Dresses.
00:28:07Oh, a dress. Okay.
00:28:09I never
00:28:11considered women. Yes, Jimmy.
00:28:13I did. Trust me.
00:28:15Well done, Jimmy.
00:28:17John, I didn't say
00:28:19that if you
00:28:21are thinking about buying something in the merch store,
00:28:23which we appreciate, by the way, don't forget
00:28:25code BANNER18
00:28:27for 20% off anything
00:28:29in the merch store, guys. Don't forget it.
00:28:31A lot of people are buying stuff. They're not using the code.
00:28:33He's not going to be able to hear you, but
00:28:35I'll give you a little boomer report here.
00:28:37No boom, no rage today, baby.
00:28:39BANNER18.
00:28:41BANNER18. I'm going to find out
00:28:43BANNER18. I'm going to find a spot,
00:28:45come back, and
00:28:47fuck shit up. Okay.
00:28:49Hey, that's the boss man
00:28:51talking. Wow. Anybody on the court?
00:28:57I was actually
00:28:59I caught the end of it next to Jelso. I think I
00:29:01saw a tear roll down his cheek as
00:29:03the tears of-
00:29:05Send me video.
00:29:07Okay, great. We got some stuff
00:29:09coming in from the court, too, which we will get to
00:29:11in a little bit. We're setting up Nick Jelso.
00:29:13Still poking around out there
00:29:15in the court. We talked to
00:29:17Ray Allen. There's still some people out
00:29:19there. We got Ray Ray?
00:29:21We got Ray Ray, and
00:29:23Bobby, as we said, is in the locker room, and again, I hope
00:29:25I hope. Is Bobby getting showered
00:29:27by Cornette? Jerk, thank
00:29:29you. Hard hat tip to everyone on the CLNS
00:29:31crew, including Amit, and we do know
00:29:33Amit is great. I also want to throw in
00:29:35Jackson Tolliver, a late
00:29:37addition to this team. This was like a
00:29:39PJ Brown sort of addition for this team,
00:29:41adding Jackson
00:29:43Tolliver to this team. This is what
00:29:45we needed to get over the top
00:29:47here. Terrific producer behind
00:29:49the scenes. He's back there right now, and
00:29:51Richie LeMay, who's been
00:29:53killing it on social media
00:29:55with all of his stuff, will also give
00:29:57a hat tip to Noah
00:29:59Denzel, who's been tremendous
00:30:01working over at Celtics Blog and jumping
00:30:03in and doing a bunch of stuff with us. Really, really
00:30:05good stuff. Amazing contributions from a ton
00:30:07of people, and honestly, all of the kids
00:30:09here and all of the guys who've been grinding
00:30:11and chasing this team around
00:30:13all year long.
00:30:15Some of these kids out here are really putting in work,
00:30:17so hats off to all of those guys. They've been awesome.
00:30:19Anwar the Great,
00:30:21$49.99
00:30:23second round of drinks on me. Jimmy,
00:30:25I'm a contractor. I need that white
00:30:27hard hat, bro. I absolutely
00:30:29love this show. I watch after every game.
00:30:31Thank you very, very,
00:30:33very much for that. We do
00:30:35appreciate it.
00:30:37White's limited, but
00:30:39green's going nowhere, guys. We're going to start
00:30:41seeing green around town, I think. I'm trying
00:30:43to get some of these on the duck boat, so
00:30:45we'll see what we can do. If you're
00:30:47at the parade and you have a hard hat on
00:30:49and you toss it to a player
00:30:51and he wears it, you get
00:30:53another hard hat from me free of charge.
00:30:55Don't worry about losing your hard hats. Anyone at
00:30:57the parade, you just hit me up, I got
00:30:59you covered. Okay, we need video
00:31:01proof of that, Jimmy, or else we're going to have to give a whole bunch
00:31:03away. But anyway, Rob Merrill,
00:31:05Banner 18, Dynasty Incoming.
00:31:07Yeah, I could see that code.
00:31:09Banner 19. They're built for a couple more years
00:31:11of this, at least. Again, the window
00:31:13is legit and it's real and it's definitely
00:31:15something that you could see
00:31:17happening. We don't have any word. People are asking about
00:31:19the parade. We don't have any word on that yet.
00:31:21Thank you. Roland,
00:31:23discovered this channel last playoffs. Been great
00:31:25all season. Cheers to Banner 18.
00:31:27Yes, we have been great
00:31:29all season. Cheers to you guys. This is a celebration
00:31:31for everybody. We have been
00:31:33excellent, I think.
00:31:35It's been a lot of blood, sweat,
00:31:37and tears for the fans, too, John. Don't forget.
00:31:39We've had a lot of ups and downs since
00:31:41oh, wait.
00:31:43I mean, damn, it got bad for a while.
00:31:45Think about when they traded
00:31:47Pierce, KG.
00:31:49Sherrod broke that news, by the way.
00:31:51And then
00:31:53that got ugly.
00:31:55But then it got fun because
00:31:57you ended up with an upstart team, no expectations.
00:31:59Brad Stevens kind of lifted.
00:32:01He was a floor raiser, Brad Stevens
00:32:03was, the Evan Turner years.
00:32:05And then you kind of transitioned
00:32:07into Isaiah Thomas years, right?
00:32:09And then that was obviously a lot of fun.
00:32:11Then you got the Kyrie years, which
00:32:13we'll keep it moving.
00:32:15Exactly.
00:32:17Things kind of got to this point now.
00:32:19It's been a long road, but it's
00:32:21been worth it.
00:32:23Oh, my God.
00:32:25That's loud. That's loud.
00:32:27Some celebration.
00:32:29Some really loud celebration here.
00:32:31Did you just gangway me?
00:32:33No, I just put up a video,
00:32:35but the volume is too high.
00:32:37Okay.
00:32:39Yeah, we're just looking at some Gino,
00:32:41some people on the court. That's just celebration
00:32:43stuff. We got some video here.
00:32:45No, just some stuff
00:32:47from before when Wick took the court
00:32:49and they're taking the podium here.
00:32:51Just some good stuff here. A little bit of flavor.
00:32:53I'm going to have to grab
00:32:55some confetti.
00:32:57I might have to sell some confetti
00:32:59on eBay or something. There's a lot of it.
00:33:01There's a lot of confetti.
00:33:03I have bags of confetti from almost every
00:33:05championship.
00:33:07I should have
00:33:09labeled it. I have it from Patriots.
00:33:11I've got dirt from the infields from every World Series.
00:33:13Yeah, I'm that guy.
00:33:15Flex on him, John.
00:33:17You're that nerd.
00:33:19I'm that nerd. I did it.
00:33:21You have to send it in
00:33:23to get it
00:33:25graded and stuff.
00:33:27I gave it away at
00:33:29one of those swaps
00:33:31that you do.
00:33:33That's what Darin Rivelle would do.
00:33:35He'd find some and go...
00:33:37Oh, Yankee swap. There was brawls over the infield dirt
00:33:39for a Red Sox championship at one of those things.
00:33:41It got intense.
00:33:43As we said,
00:33:45I'm almost afraid to do this because
00:33:47he's not always the most exciting guy in the world,
00:33:49but an NBA champion, no doubt,
00:33:51the one who won one in 2008,
00:33:53Ray Allen was here.
00:33:59We're going to hear from Ray on this team
00:34:01and this championship. Here we go.
00:34:03In the building, one-third of the big three, 2008's
00:34:05big three.
00:34:07What's it like to be back here in Boston?
00:34:09You just took in that moment.
00:34:11Once again, the NBA champion, 2024 champ.
00:34:13Take me through it, man.
00:34:15The energy to be here.
00:34:17I always tell people
00:34:19that if you're a
00:34:21fevered fan base,
00:34:23specifically in the NBA finals,
00:34:25there's no better place to be here
00:34:27in the Garden of Boston.
00:34:29Just being here, just brought so many old memories.
00:34:31So glad to experience this.
00:34:33I was here two years ago and it didn't end up so well.
00:34:35That's why I'm sure
00:34:37for the guys that were here then,
00:34:39this is so amazing.
00:34:41Such a
00:34:43perfect moment for them.
00:34:45You go through so much struggle,
00:34:47but to be able to get to the mountaintop is amazing.
00:34:51And there you have Ray Allen.
00:34:53Ray Allen.
00:34:55We don't see enough of that guy.
00:34:57A little 90-second audience with Ray?
00:34:59We don't see enough Ray around town.
00:35:01It would have been cool to get more of the O.A. team
00:35:03here tonight, but it's not about the O.A. team.
00:35:05This is about the
00:35:07this year's team, 2024.
00:35:09There's a new bomb-ass squad in the building.
00:35:11The Celtics are built on tradition
00:35:13and having the former greats coming through.
00:35:15That's one of the great things about it.
00:35:17Paul's pretty much the only one.
00:35:19Paul spent a lot of time with the Celtics team this year.
00:35:21Off-season, before the season started.
00:35:23A lot of time with Tatum.
00:35:25I have a feeling he's somewhere
00:35:27celebrating, maybe celebrating a little too hard.
00:35:29Celebrating in his own special way.
00:35:31Hopefully, he'll be on live tonight, Paul.
00:35:33Still shouting out some of the superchats.
00:35:35Tony Lewis, a long-time viewer.
00:35:37Found this show back in 2020 in the bubble.
00:35:39Never imagined it would be a great regular part of my life.
00:35:41Four years and counting.
00:35:43Love the show, love the chat, love the Celtics.
00:35:45We are the champions, my friends.
00:35:47Thank you, Tony. Tony's here every single night.
00:35:49We do appreciate it.
00:35:51It is amazing. It's a good payoff.
00:35:53Is everything
00:35:55we've said
00:35:57about this team? I just want to ask
00:35:59the chat. Is everything forgiven?
00:36:01Some of the wild shit
00:36:03that we said over time.
00:36:07We're just messing around.
00:36:09We're just talking, right?
00:36:11We're just doing the jokes.
00:36:13You, me.
00:36:17Remember when you
00:36:19did that thing? It's crazy.
00:36:21I was going through some
00:36:23stuff personally at the time.
00:36:25I didn't mean it.
00:36:27I don't even know what I said.
00:36:29I was blacked out.
00:36:31Really.
00:36:33I don't remember
00:36:35two straight years in a row.
00:36:37Somebody put it in my
00:36:39mentions today.
00:36:41It just shows that you care.
00:36:43Where's the rage
00:36:45come from or where does some of that stuff
00:36:47when you see some stuff?
00:36:49Have you
00:36:51ever had a group of people
00:36:53yell at each other more over a 19-point
00:36:55lead as we did upstairs in the press box?
00:36:57You, me and
00:36:59Bobby. I was grabbing
00:37:01Bobby and shaking him.
00:37:03Why did he do
00:37:05that? He's like, dude,
00:37:07stop touching me. I was like, okay.
00:37:09It's like I'm trying to type.
00:37:11We're just
00:37:13raging at a 25-point
00:37:15lead being like, lazy play.
00:37:17Lazy play right there.
00:37:19It should be 40.
00:37:21You know what it is, John? We're not
00:37:23enablers. That's what I always
00:37:25stand on. We are not enablers.
00:37:27If we see something that we don't like,
00:37:29we're going to call it out.
00:37:31That doesn't mean that we don't think they can change.
00:37:33People can change.
00:37:35What else are you going to do?
00:37:37Sweat. That's all I've been doing.
00:37:39A lot of sweating.
00:37:41We actually never know that.
00:37:43You were sweating it out.
00:37:45We can hear you. You were sweating it out
00:37:47up on nine with me watching
00:37:49the confetti
00:37:51flying down there.
00:37:53You weren't sweating by then, but you were a little nervous
00:37:55in that second half, were you?
00:37:57I was quite nervous
00:37:59until then. I was pretty nervous.
00:38:01No, I wasn't nervous at all.
00:38:03Not once
00:38:05the entire game.
00:38:07No, I really wasn't. I got to be honest with you.
00:38:09I was very confident.
00:38:11When the body language is that good,
00:38:13and when
00:38:15the body language is that good,
00:38:17their defense is that good, they're hustling,
00:38:19the energy, you can't beat that team.
00:38:21They're the best team in the league
00:38:23all year.
00:38:25They play with focus.
00:38:27Focus.
00:38:29It's not even an issue. The talent is top
00:38:31of the list.
00:38:33It goes above pretty much anyone in the league.
00:38:35When you combine that with the focus
00:38:37that we saw in this game,
00:38:39there's only one end result, and that is
00:38:41whoever they're playing, about to get that ass kicked.
00:38:43Dallas,
00:38:45give them props for getting this far.
00:38:47They had to knock off some pretty damn good teams out west.
00:38:49Doing that
00:38:51is going to take a lot out of you.
00:38:53Doing that often requires guys
00:38:55to play way above their pay grade,
00:38:57and they did.
00:38:59Come back to this place we call Earth.
00:39:01About to teach you a lesson.
00:39:03No disrespect, Derek Jones,
00:39:05but you're not that guy.
00:39:07The reason why
00:39:09you were let loose
00:39:11in Charlotte, because they're rebuilding
00:39:13and you're not part of that process.
00:39:15Gafford, you were Porzingis's
00:39:17backup in Washington.
00:39:19You were the backup center.
00:39:21Now you're a starter.
00:39:23That tells you a lot.
00:39:25Give them credit for getting there, but at the end of the day,
00:39:27the Celtics were the better team.
00:39:29Town wins out in the NBA, or at least it's supposed to
00:39:31in most cases, and especially in a seven-game series.
00:39:33I think we could all tell
00:39:35after game one that the Celtics
00:39:37were the much better team in the series
00:39:39in that it really had no business
00:39:41going any further than
00:39:43five games. Really, it went the way
00:39:45we thought it should go
00:39:47and how it would go.
00:39:49I have them in five. I know John had them in five.
00:39:51I know Ahmed had them in five. I think you had them in five or six.
00:39:53Five. There you go, five.
00:39:55Five.
00:39:57Five for Nick.
00:39:59I wonder would it have been a sweep
00:40:01had Porzingis been 100% healthy.
00:40:03Oh, I think so.
00:40:05I think so.
00:40:07That game four was a wild one.
00:40:09It ends up being a gentlemen's sweep, which happens.
00:40:11Dallas avoided the embarrassment.
00:40:13They saved face by getting that one win.
00:40:15That's it.
00:40:17When it comes to what the Celtics did,
00:40:19you know,
00:40:21you've got to respect them.
00:40:23This is why I said,
00:40:25because I already know what's going to happen
00:40:27and Beat already hinted to it.
00:40:29Players were hurt.
00:40:31It happens every playoff season.
00:40:33The Celtics already know
00:40:35that they're going to have to go out there
00:40:37next year and prove themselves all over again.
00:40:39Here's what pisses me off about that whole premise though.
00:40:41Golden State, when they won their first championship,
00:40:43had the same
00:40:45crash. They played teams
00:40:47that had at least one starter
00:40:49in every single series.
00:40:51Yet, we don't talk about that.
00:40:53The reason why? Because they went on
00:40:55and won four championships.
00:40:57That's the only way to stop that kind of nonsense.
00:40:59You have to do it over and over again.
00:41:03People are going to just automatically
00:41:05say, the Jays are great
00:41:07working together. They can do it.
00:41:09You've got to do it two, three, four more times
00:41:11before people are going to be comfortable saying,
00:41:13okay, you're right. We have no
00:41:15argument against their greatness
00:41:17because they keep winning championships.
00:41:19That might end up being a good thing
00:41:21because you know how hard it is
00:41:23not only to win once, but to
00:41:25win again.
00:41:27Talk to Denver.
00:41:29All those extra games that you have to play.
00:41:31You've got to get the target on your back. You've got to find
00:41:33motivation now. That's motivation
00:41:35right there. Guess what? You just won a title and
00:41:37tomorrow or the next day,
00:41:39you're still going to be disrespected.
00:41:41People are still going to look at you and say, nah, that doesn't count.
00:41:43Which is BS, let's be honest.
00:41:45It's still going to happen because that's
00:41:47what we do. When I talk to players
00:41:49who won championships and we talk about
00:41:51just that following season, the one
00:41:53thing that they said that they never really anticipated
00:41:55was kind of the subconscious
00:41:57reality that you know
00:41:59once the playoffs start, you can be the last team standing.
00:42:01But you've got to take the step
00:42:03to prepare yourself to be that
00:42:05team. Sometimes when you win a championship,
00:42:07you don't do that. Sometimes
00:42:09you are comfortable with just
00:42:11going through the motions, thinking
00:42:13that once the playoffs roll around, we'll just
00:42:15flip a switch and we'll be great.
00:42:17And that's not how these guys do it.
00:42:19That's why it's so hard. That's why a team like Denver,
00:42:21they had a solid
00:42:23regular season, but they weren't able to put enough
00:42:25distance and frankly grow enough
00:42:27in the regular season to withstand
00:42:29the postseason and some of the
00:42:31hard times that they went through.
00:42:33I don't know about the Celtics.
00:42:35No one's going to argue that the West wasn't more competitive
00:42:37than the East. No one's going to argue that.
00:42:39Celtics don't pick the schedule.
00:42:41And to their credit, they beat the shit out of
00:42:43everybody that they played against.
00:42:45It wasn't like they squeaked out these seniors.
00:42:47And they played those teams during the regular season
00:42:49and had a pretty damn good record against most of them.
00:42:51Yeah, I mean,
00:42:53it sucks to suck
00:42:55if you're one of those teams. Sorry.
00:42:57Sherrod,
00:42:59part of winning a championship is being
00:43:01available and being healthy. That's part of it.
00:43:03Sherrod, you saw
00:43:05this in Detroit, right? You saw
00:43:07Detroit win and what
00:43:09was the celebration?
00:43:11No, did you see a Celtics
00:43:13championship? Were you here?
00:43:15Oh, my bad.
00:43:17Give me the contrast
00:43:19and comparison of
00:43:21Detroit's
00:43:23crowd craziness versus this.
00:43:25Well, the Detroit
00:43:27situation was very different because they were the underdog.
00:43:29I mean, remember that Lakers team had
00:43:31the usual Kobe, Shaq,
00:43:33they also had Karl Malone, Gary Payton
00:43:35at the end of their careers. So they were
00:43:37a very star-studded team that was
00:43:39just steam rollover in business.
00:43:41But Ben Wallace,
00:43:43I've never seen anyone to finish Shaquille O'Neal
00:43:45as well as Ben Wallace did over a
00:43:47stretch of period. Rasheed Wallace was
00:43:49probably in the best shape of his basketball
00:43:51life. Chauncey Gillis.
00:43:53And remember,
00:43:55that 0-4 team, the NBA
00:43:57rules as far as how you could defend
00:43:59changed after that because Lindsey Hunter, Mike
00:44:01James, both spent a
00:44:03hot minute in Boston. They were able to be
00:44:05much more physical and
00:44:07that was one of those things where the league said,
00:44:09no, no, no, we can't have this happen again.
00:44:11And so that created more freedom of movement
00:44:13for players after that team
00:44:15won the title. But the biggest
00:44:17difference is that the Celtics fan base,
00:44:19this is what they expected. They
00:44:21expected when the last game was played
00:44:23that it would be a celebratory
00:44:25victorious moment in Boston.
00:44:27The Pistons, yeah, it was
00:44:29kind of cool getting to the finals. And then
00:44:31after they won a couple games, it's like, well, shit,
00:44:33let's just win this thing. And
00:44:35they did that. They won it in five games just like the Celtics did.
00:44:37I can tell you one big difference,
00:44:39Sherrod. One big difference here,
00:44:41the big difference might be you
00:44:43didn't have a hard hat in Detroit.
00:44:45You're right.
00:44:47Give me a hit.
00:44:49I don't even feel it.
00:44:51I don't even feel it.
00:44:53Feels great, man. I'm telling you,
00:44:55these things are legit. If Derek White was wearing one
00:44:57tonight, guess what?
00:44:59If he was
00:45:01out there playing with a hard hat like he should have been,
00:45:03he'd be fine right now.
00:45:05He should be the honorary hard hat captain.
00:45:07Because he takes more licks
00:45:09than any one of the team.
00:45:11You guys
00:45:13hear me okay?
00:45:15Some guys
00:45:17walked in a couple times and being like,
00:45:19how are you going to be?
00:45:21Just trying to acknowledge the Super Chats with Jimmy
00:45:23yells at me for doing, but you know,
00:45:25for not doing, but
00:45:27B. Tony, thanks for the awesome year of coverage, fellas.
00:45:29Banner 18, thank you very much, guys.
00:45:31Thank you to everybody who's contributed so far.
00:45:33Nick, jump back in.
00:45:35You can ask your question here.
00:45:37B. Tony
00:45:39Vicente.
00:45:41Did you guys discuss
00:45:43the MVP?
00:45:45John, I thought that would be your number one topic.
00:45:47No, it's my literally
00:45:49number 100 topic. I could not
00:45:51care less about who wins the MVP.
00:45:53I find it to be the dumbest.
00:45:55But the one who did,
00:45:57John.
00:45:59When we
00:46:01were talking Eastern Conference Finals MVP,
00:46:03I was like, who
00:46:05won it last year?
00:46:07I have no idea.
00:46:09It doesn't matter.
00:46:11The one point
00:46:13that Jimmy made about this, and I think it's
00:46:15a really good point, is that unlike
00:46:17most teams, there's usually one or two guys
00:46:19and you're like, oh yeah, it's either him or him.
00:46:21The Celtics had four guys at one
00:46:23point who you could make a legitimate case.
00:46:25It speaks to how good they are.
00:46:27You really can't lock in on one or two guys
00:46:29and expect, if we just limit those two guys,
00:46:31we're going to win. I mean, Tatum, I thought,
00:46:33for many stretches throughout the postseason,
00:46:35was not very good. And the Celtics
00:46:37were still winning by 10, 15, 20 points.
00:46:39Because other guys stepped up.
00:46:41To John's point, you're right.
00:46:43The actual naming of the MVP is irrelevant.
00:46:45To me, more important is the fact
00:46:47that you've got a roster where
00:46:49you can't lock in on one or two
00:46:51guys and expect to beat them.
00:46:53For Dallas, if Luca and Kyrie
00:46:55have a bad game, you'll win them
00:46:57on a bad night by 15.
00:46:59But if Tatum and Brown struggle,
00:47:01you still might lose by 7 or 8 points
00:47:03if Derek White gets it done.
00:47:07Speaking of struggle, do you guys want to hear
00:47:09some Luca tears?
00:47:11Yes, please.
00:47:13And again, he rebounded
00:47:15to have a decent stat line,
00:47:17but honestly, they made it really difficult on him.
00:47:19Him not being able to hit a 3 here
00:47:21I think really killed them. But here's Luca
00:47:23Luca tears.
00:47:27Luca,
00:47:29can you put your feelings into words?
00:47:31Obviously, tough loss,
00:47:33but you guys really had a great season.
00:47:35I know it's not easy to think about right now,
00:47:37but what's going through your head right now?
00:47:39Nothing.
00:47:47Now that the series is over,
00:47:49how much
00:47:51were you hurting?
00:47:53It doesn't matter if I was hurt.
00:47:55How much was I hurt?
00:47:57I was out there trying to play,
00:47:59but
00:48:01I didn't do enough.
00:48:15He kind of played like that all series.
00:48:17That was just the vibe I got from Luca
00:48:19from game one on.
00:48:21That's his game.
00:48:23There has never been a shot that he's missed
00:48:25where he didn't get fouled.
00:48:27And he lets the referees know it
00:48:29every single time.
00:48:31We talk about Tatum.
00:48:33Luca is a thousand times worse than Tatum
00:48:35when it comes to the demonstrative
00:48:37I can't believe you missed that foul call.
00:48:41Luca was out there, and here's the thing.
00:48:43Even if he wasn't 100%,
00:48:45he still was impactful.
00:48:47He's a top-level player.
00:48:49Anyone who doesn't think he's a top-two, top-three player,
00:48:51you are fooling no one but yourself.
00:48:53And he showed
00:48:55what he could do when he's locked in defensively.
00:48:57He's not a great defender,
00:48:59but he doesn't suck nearly as bad
00:49:01as he looked throughout the course of this postseason.
00:49:03If there's one thing
00:49:05that if I'm the Dallas Mavericks,
00:49:07I'm going to do with Luca,
00:49:09I'm going to get him a legitimate offseason trainer.
00:49:11Because his ass needs to be in better shape.
00:49:13That, to me,
00:49:15that to me
00:49:17is what's going to keep him from winning
00:49:19a championship.
00:49:21Maybe it was a wake-up call.
00:49:23I don't know if it was, but it should have been.
00:49:25It's a whole other level when you get up to this stage.
00:49:29If you want to talk about
00:49:31the Celtics in that
00:49:33facet,
00:49:35do you see anybody
00:49:37get tired?
00:49:39They're all wrecked.
00:49:41I think Drew Holiday isn't ready.
00:49:43Holiday, White,
00:49:45Horford in peak condition at 38.
00:49:47Of course that matters.
00:49:49That's a big, big deal.
00:49:51They knew just simply.
00:49:53I just keep leaning on this guy until he gives up.
00:49:55And guys, if anyone asks you how long
00:49:57you're going to be up there, you say all night.
00:49:59Because this is what this is, and this is our media spot.
00:50:05I'm putting up Jason Tatum here
00:50:07walking down the hallway. Check out Tatum.
00:50:11Oh!
00:50:17Yeah!
00:50:19Yeah!
00:50:25Woo!
00:50:29I love you, dawg.
00:50:33Ah!
00:50:35Ah!
00:50:37Ah!
00:50:39Ah!
00:50:43John, we do have to move.
00:50:47OK.
00:51:03Let's go, Russ!
00:51:09Woo!
00:51:35Some good stuff
00:51:37from those guys celebrating in the hallway.
00:51:39Good stuff, Josue Pavone, sending in that video
00:51:41from the bowels
00:51:43of the TD Garden.
00:51:45Jimmy and
00:51:47Sherrod may or may not
00:51:49have been arrested.
00:51:51So we're going to get
00:51:53to them in a little bit. They're going to move on
00:51:55and try to relocate, I believe.
00:51:57Amit, if you're hearing this,
00:51:59Sherrod and Jimmy
00:52:01might need you to bail them out.
00:52:03Or to move their live shot,
00:52:05as it were.
00:52:07Let's move back. We want to hear from...
00:52:09Again, this was a big storyline, Nick.
00:52:11We talked about this on the way in.
00:52:13You know,
00:52:15Kyrie and...
00:52:17Getting in his head.
00:52:19Not only was he
00:52:21ineffective, he was borderline
00:52:23invisible at times. I kind of forgot that he was there.
00:52:25They weren't going through him.
00:52:27He wasn't assertive. He disappeared
00:52:29for big chunks of time.
00:52:31They really made things difficult on him.
00:52:33Again, he's going to, every once in a while,
00:52:35do something really fancy and make a tricky shot or two.
00:52:37But, for the most part,
00:52:39they kept him in check.
00:52:41This was his third real clunker
00:52:43at
00:52:45TD Garden in this series.
00:52:47And we said that... I mean, third real clunker,
00:52:49period.
00:52:51I take that...
00:52:53He had one good game against them.
00:52:55One really good game.
00:52:57We said
00:52:59it about them here beforehand.
00:53:01They have to win.
00:53:03They need both Luca and Kyrie to put up
00:53:05monster games to be competitive.
00:53:07I didn't really believe that
00:53:09the
00:53:11Dallas bench could repeat
00:53:13what it did last time.
00:53:15But the amount of talking that Kyrie did
00:53:17and getting it in his head...
00:53:19And here's Kyrie after the game talking about it again.
00:53:21However he wants to spin the narrative,
00:53:23I think it's giving the Celtics credit.
00:53:25Probably for his mentorship.
00:53:27Yeah, of course.
00:53:29You hug a lot of your old teammates,
00:53:31the other guys on the Celtics.
00:53:33As you're walking back to the bench there,
00:53:35what's going through your mind?
00:53:37Obviously at the end of what was a pretty emotional
00:53:39series for you.
00:53:41It was emotional anyway. I mean, every series was
00:53:43emotional. Just because
00:53:45I was just uncertain on how it was going to go
00:53:47and how we were going to respond to a little bit of adversity.
00:53:49We finally ran into a
00:53:51team where
00:53:53they beat us fair and square.
00:53:55We weren't able to respond to a lot of their runs.
00:53:57We weren't able to execute
00:53:59at a high level.
00:54:01When I was shaking everybody's hands, that was more of a sign of respect
00:54:03for their journey.
00:54:05They've been through an incredible
00:54:07five-year span of going to Game 7
00:54:09or losing in the finals.
00:54:11They know what this bitter
00:54:13feeling feels like being up here and answering questions
00:54:15about what does next year hold.
00:54:17I think they used everything as motivation.
00:54:19They were healthy.
00:54:21They really kept their head down
00:54:23and weren't paying attention to any of the
00:54:25personal accolades or individual accolades.
00:54:27That's because you're gone.
00:54:29We're okay with each person being
00:54:31great in their role. Did JB win
00:54:33finals MVP?
00:54:35My guy.
00:54:37My guy.
00:54:39Those two guys
00:54:41in particular have
00:54:43almost been like students
00:54:45and as well now becoming teachers in their own right.
00:54:47To see them accomplish
00:54:49that, I'm really proud.
00:54:51I'm going to react.
00:54:53I'm going to get back to this position
00:54:55in the next few years with my guys
00:54:57and be able to win this thing.
00:54:59I just want to point out.
00:55:01First off, students,
00:55:03I don't want to get into it.
00:55:05I do want to point out
00:55:07two things.
00:55:09One, I don't actually care
00:55:11enough to get deeply into this.
00:55:13We'll just spend a little bit of time on it.
00:55:15Number two,
00:55:17that was
00:55:19all.
00:55:21Just so everyone knows, one sentence
00:55:23and one breath. It's
00:55:25unreal how he can do that.
00:55:27Go ahead, Nick.
00:55:29Obi-Kairi Kenobi,
00:55:31being he mentored
00:55:33all our guys because now they're winning.
00:55:35He fucking set this franchise
00:55:37back at least two years.
00:55:39That guy is smug.
00:55:41He deserved every boo
00:55:43he got.
00:55:45I was, as a fan
00:55:47slash more fan side than
00:55:49media, I was very, very proud
00:55:51of the fans here for booing him
00:55:53because they got in his head.
00:55:55I can now close the door
00:55:57on Kyrie Irving because
00:55:59he blocked me. I'm on the block list.
00:56:01That's how much I would
00:56:03go at him.
00:56:05I don't hate anybody
00:56:07but I can't fucking stand
00:56:09that guy. Now he's gone.
00:56:11We can wash our hands of him.
00:56:13Let me tell you something. He only
00:56:15taught the Jays
00:56:17how to
00:56:19be difficult.
00:56:21I think he set them back to a
00:56:23degree being here with the things that he said
00:56:25and did. I'm glad he's
00:56:27gone. I'm so glad we're
00:56:29in his head as we are.
00:56:31I don't
00:56:33need to be angry with him anymore
00:56:35because we beat
00:56:37him and the Celtics beat him.
00:56:39That's that.
00:56:41That's my Kyrie take.
00:56:43The funny thing is and Judah is right and this is why
00:56:45we don't spend a ton of time on Kyrie is
00:56:47because I don't need
00:56:49validation to know
00:56:51that most of what he says is nonsense. I think
00:56:53he's a person who really needs the narrative
00:56:55to be what he wants it to be and that's why he
00:56:57talks so much because he really wants
00:56:59to set the narrative on whatever it is that he's
00:57:01talking about here. That's fine.
00:57:03But wait a minute.
00:57:05Let me finish the sentence.
00:57:07Judah points out here because I was putting up this comment.
00:57:09The fans hated him. The players did not.
00:57:11Most of those guys say, yeah, we hit some bumps
00:57:13but we were happy.
00:57:15We like Kyrie. They respect him.
00:57:17They like him. Players actually like him.
00:57:19This really is just
00:57:21fan rage, boomer rage sort of
00:57:23stuff but the most important thing
00:57:25Nick is getting
00:57:27in his head which you guys did whether
00:57:29you guys came to the game
00:57:31or not or just put stuff
00:57:33into the ether through social
00:57:35media or whatever. He heard all of it.
00:57:37He heard all of it.
00:57:39You get an assist
00:57:41for that because it absolutely
00:57:43made a difference. Derek White
00:57:45by the way, talking about making a difference.
00:57:47Derek White left half of his face on the
00:57:49court tonight.
00:57:51And then hit a three.
00:57:53It's what he did. He left half of his course.
00:57:55There's so many things you can
00:57:57count on Derek White to do and one of them
00:57:59is hit one ridiculous
00:58:01bailout three after a
00:58:03horrible possession when somebody just tosses
00:58:05him a grenade with no time left on the
00:58:07shot clock and he just flips
00:58:09up and goes. Here is Derek White
00:58:11talking at the podium after the game.
00:58:13Second row on your right.
00:58:15Derek, when this team traded for
00:58:17you two years ago, they were going through a
00:58:19rough patch at the start of the season. To go from
00:58:21there to now, I know you just reflected on being a champion
00:58:23but that journey with this group
00:58:25of guys, what has that process
00:58:27meant? They've talked a lot about instilling confidence
00:58:29in you. You've talked about it too.
00:58:31That journey, what has it been like?
00:58:33At the moment I got
00:58:35traded I was
00:58:37disappointed but
00:58:39you're in San Antonio,
00:58:41that's all I knew.
00:58:43It's such a blessing to be a
00:58:45part of this roster.
00:58:47They just drive me in so many different
00:58:49ways from top to bottom.
00:58:51I'm just so thankful and grateful for each
00:58:53and every one of them.
00:58:57They made me a better player,
00:58:59made me a better person and the city of Boston
00:59:01and everything has just been amazing for me.
00:59:03That sounds
00:59:05to me like a guy ready to take a little bit of a hometown
00:59:07discount and re-sign here. That's just
00:59:09the way I view it.
00:59:11Nick, are you eating and leaving
00:59:13your microphone down? That's okay.
00:59:15If I'm him, I don't know
00:59:17that I would take a hometown discount but I
00:59:19think you're right. It sounds that way.
00:59:21The Celtics can only extend him by so much.
00:59:23He's either going to take a low market
00:59:25deal at $26-27 million
00:59:27or go to free agency
00:59:29and get paid. That's all they have.
00:59:31He
00:59:33might do it.
00:59:35Jimmy, Sherrod, give me a thumbs up when you guys
00:59:37are good to go. I know you relocated up there.
00:59:39They're good. I'm going to bring these guys back in here
00:59:41and throw them in here
00:59:43into the big screen.
00:59:45The good news is the hardhats
00:59:47are in town.
00:59:49The hardhats made it.
00:59:51We got booted from one room
00:59:53but they can't kick us out of the
00:59:55whole garden.
00:59:57We just go from room
00:59:59to room to room.
01:00:01We'll be here all damn night
01:00:03just like John said.
01:00:05Spent too many nights here
01:00:07after losses
01:00:09to leave early after a night
01:00:11after the ultimate wins.
01:00:13I ain't leaving!
01:00:15I ain't leaving!
01:00:17We should
01:00:19point out, I don't know if Nick said it
01:00:21while I was gone a little bit but
01:00:23for Jimmy being
01:00:25at the garden, I know you guys don't see him there
01:00:27a lot but Jimmy's an OG,
01:00:29CLNS Media OG where he
01:00:31and Nick Jelso and some other guy,
01:00:33I can't remember his name, used to do stuff at the
01:00:35garden all the
01:00:37time after games.
01:00:39That was a little blunt.
01:00:41They were
01:00:43very much CLNS Media before I
01:00:45even discovered who they were and what they were doing.
01:00:47I'm like, oh, I know
01:00:49Jimmy. Jimmy's that guy.
01:00:51John sent me a text.
01:00:53Yeah, but
01:00:55Jimmy and I worked together
01:00:57at NBC Sports Boston. I'm like,
01:00:59Jimmy's on the court doing Jimmy things. I love that.
01:01:01He's always been doing that.
01:01:03Yeah, Jimmy, it may
01:01:05look new to you but this is actually
01:01:07old school with Jimmy down there.
01:01:09Old school. Having Jimmy down there.
01:01:11Having Jimmy there tonight brought back
01:01:13good memories.
01:01:15Dude, I used to follow you around
01:01:17like you were training me. I was like a puppy dog.
01:01:19Where's Jimmy? I didn't know where to go.
01:01:21I did a horrible job apparently.
01:01:23I quit since then.
01:01:25Now you're back and we're both here.
01:01:27You broke him, Jimmy. You broke him.
01:01:29I can't believe Sharad Blakely is here.
01:01:31Sharad, to have Sharad
01:01:33on this broadcast is
01:01:35unbelievable. Sharad, to have you part
01:01:37of our family now, incredible.
01:01:39I'm going to start crying, guys.
01:01:41I cried in a way. I'm going to start crying.
01:01:43It's a little surreal.
01:01:45It's a little surreal. I'm standing next to Sharad.
01:01:47We both got the hard hats on. I remember when I was working
01:01:49the desk at NBC.
01:01:51He was doing his thing.
01:01:53I was taking his knowledge.
01:01:55I was posting it up on the
01:01:57computer there for everyone to read.
01:01:59Then John was doing the TV stuff and now here we are.
01:02:01All these years later.
01:02:03Clearly I did not do a good job.
01:02:05The TV stuff.
01:02:07I got tired of letting you guys do all the
01:02:09talking so I decided to jump and follow up.
01:02:11Now we got more damn
01:02:13press passes than any other media outlet
01:02:15probably in New England right now.
01:02:17Don't tell anybody.
01:02:19I think
01:02:21they just lost count.
01:02:23We got seven
01:02:25guys here plus Sharad out there
01:02:27doing work. Like I said, we will get Bobby Manning
01:02:29on here at some point. I told them to bring
01:02:31a poncho. I don't know if he did.
01:02:33You're supposed to wear a poncho
01:02:35and goggles in the locker room.
01:02:37Poncho, Bobby, I said it would have went viral.
01:02:39It would have went viral.
01:02:41We're going to start selling ponchos.
01:02:43It was not KOC who I was throwing
01:02:45shade at.
01:02:47KOC is also an NBC guy
01:02:49who was working at the coffee house
01:02:51before the ringer
01:02:53scooped him up. I have nothing
01:02:55but deep affinity for
01:02:57KOC.
01:02:59He joined us the other day.
01:03:01We like everybody.
01:03:03We told Bobby to get a poncho
01:03:05and he's going to bring his wet puppy ass
01:03:07onto the show here, all drenched.
01:03:09Again, you know.
01:03:11Did he get soaked? Did he get a Luke shower?
01:03:13I hope so.
01:03:15He's got that face
01:03:17where if you see Bobby walking, you're just going to spray him.
01:03:19Let's be real. He's an easy target.
01:03:21There he is. I'm getting him.
01:03:23She got me in Detroit.
01:03:25Did he?
01:03:27Probably with a Bud Light.
01:03:29Cornette got Bobby in the locker room
01:03:31tonight.
01:03:33That's Bobby's dream.
01:03:37Good for Bobby.
01:03:39Good for Joe's play. Those guys have been
01:03:41covering the team for a long
01:03:43season or a number of years.
01:03:45Good for them.
01:03:47I told Bobby.
01:03:49I was sitting next to Bobby. I said,
01:03:51Bobby, smile, man.
01:03:53Don't be so serious. Take a look.
01:03:55Take a look around. Take a look in.
01:03:59We've done our little
01:04:01walk down memory lane. We are waiting to hear
01:04:03from some of the guys in the locker room. We will get some of that
01:04:05on the show as well.
01:04:07I promise you that
01:04:09that is going to happen. Real quick,

01:05:47as far as...
01:05:49Hit him with the merch one more time.
01:05:51Hit him with the merch.
01:05:53We got some Banner 18
01:05:55merch.
01:05:57Listen, I know you stack
01:05:59your supplements
01:06:01with beef livers or whatever
01:06:03it was. I don't stack my
01:06:05ads with my merch.
01:06:07Remember when I used to stack AG1
01:06:09with my beef organs? There it is,
01:06:11baby. Jimmy, I threw it up
01:06:13there, but Jimmy's t-shirt
01:06:15and again... Just a quick one. Available now
01:06:17at shop.clnsmedia.com.
01:06:19Banner 18 for 20%
01:06:21off. You got to type in that promo code.
01:06:23We don't have it there, but that's true.
01:06:25Banner 18 for 20% off. Get your
01:06:27t-shirts, get your limited edition hard hats.
01:06:29Once those are gone, they're gone. You got the
01:06:31white ones. Those ones are
01:06:33clean, man. Yeah, they are.
01:06:35And it says Banner 18 on the
01:06:37side. That makes it literally
01:06:39a Banner 18 edition hard hat. We're going to start
01:06:41making these sneakers.
01:06:43This is the hard hat
01:06:451TE
01:06:47title edition.
01:06:49You know what I mean? This is the 1TE
01:06:51right now. Next year, it'll be
01:06:53the 2. We'll see what we can...
01:06:55We'll see what we whip up in the lab.
01:06:57We'll see what we whip up in the lab, but
01:06:59these things are going to be... The green
01:07:01stays, but the limited
01:07:03editions are going to be running its course.
01:07:05If you like how it looks, don't sleep.
01:07:07Don't sleep on it, because once it's gone, it's gone.
01:07:09You might even want to create a city edition. Maybe
01:07:11go with a black one?
01:07:13Ooh.
01:07:15Don't tell them we're going black, because then they're not going to... I got to get the white
01:07:17ones out first.
01:07:19I like that idea, though.
01:07:21I like that idea, the black. Maybe for next
01:07:23year. Maybe next season.
01:07:25I got to save some of them for next year. This is supposed
01:07:27to be a dynasty, so I can't unleash
01:07:29all the colors in the first year.
01:07:31Jimmy, what do you think about a t-shirt
01:07:33holiday weekend? It's a
01:07:35holiday weekend.
01:07:37Yeah, Nick, just leave the merch to me.
01:07:39Leave the merch to me, Nick.
01:07:41I was like, okay. That's enough merch talk.
01:07:43Back to basketball and back to
01:07:45Al Horford. He had the dubious
01:07:47distinction of being one of the
01:07:49losingest guys who was
01:07:51such a winner in life and in his career,
01:07:53but he never won a championship, and I can't
01:07:55second to Carl Malone.
01:07:59I don't remember the exact number, but it was
01:08:01a dubious distinction.
01:08:03Never to be talked of again. It was a dubious
01:08:05distinction and one that he didn't necessarily
01:08:07want to be part of,
01:08:09and a lot of people had this kind of win-it-for-Al
01:08:11mentality, and Horford came
01:08:13back in a big way tonight, and he played a really big
01:08:15role. Again, those stats aren't going to
01:08:17absolutely pop off the page, but you can see it, and again,
01:08:19we said this in the pregame, too, Sharon.
01:08:21He was well
01:08:23rested. He knew he had to carry the load. The Celtics
01:08:25got what they needed out of Kristaps Porzingis
01:08:27to give Al enough juice, and
01:08:29he knew where they were going with it in that fourth quarter.
01:08:31They brought him out, and then they brought all the starters
01:08:33back in to wrap this thing up, bring
01:08:35home banner 18 with seven minutes to go, so
01:08:37Horford was absolutely integral
01:08:39in tonight's plan, but the entire finals run,
01:08:41particularly when Porzingis went out,
01:08:43he wasn't the sixth man anymore.
01:08:45He was now a starter and
01:08:47essential to what the Celtics
01:08:49were doing here. Let's bring Al
01:08:51Horford here from the podium on to
01:08:53the stage to listen to what he had to say after the game.
01:08:55I'm so grateful.
01:08:57I know I've said it before, but
01:08:59it's glory to
01:09:01the Lord for me, for putting me
01:09:03in this position. It's
01:09:05been a lot of years.
01:09:07I don't think it's
01:09:09sunk in yet. I'm
01:09:11going through emotions right now, but
01:09:13I don't feel like it's
01:09:15over. This is an
01:09:17unbelievable feeling. Yeah, the confetti,
01:09:19everything's going on, but it just
01:09:21hasn't hit me yet. I never forget
01:09:23what Danny Ainge told me in that meeting. He said,
01:09:25you can win
01:09:27championships in
01:09:29many places, but there's nothing
01:09:31like winning in Boston and nothing
01:09:33like winning as a Celtic, and
01:09:35that stuck with me from that meeting, and I was
01:09:37like, man, I'm trying to be great, and
01:09:39that's what I want, and the
01:09:41fact that it has
01:09:43happened,
01:09:45JT, JB stepping up
01:09:47their way and leading us,
01:09:49it's special.
01:09:51Jay, standing in the back.
01:09:55That was awesome.
01:09:57That was great.
01:09:59I gotta say,
01:10:01he's one guy
01:10:03you just have to be happy for,
01:10:05and on top
01:10:07of that,
01:10:09am I muted? No.
01:10:11Thank you, Mike. I'm just going to have some thank yous
01:10:13here as the Super Chats come in, so don't
01:10:15mind me. Thank you, Mike.
01:10:17I also think that we need to give
01:10:19Danny Ainge a little credit for assembling
01:10:21so much of this team,
01:10:23and Al just did that. That was good to hear,
01:10:25and I saw John's face.
01:10:27I don't care. Give Danny Ainge a little
01:10:29credit, but Al Horford,
01:10:31man, I couldn't have been more happy for him,
01:10:33and he did, I mean,
01:10:35if you think about it,
01:10:37it was full circle, because if it wasn't
01:10:39for him, the Celtics wouldn't have
01:10:41gone as far as they did with Chris Stapps
01:10:43who, of course, is getting injured.
01:10:45Owing Al a ton
01:10:47at 38 years old to be able to
01:10:49contribute the way he has
01:10:51and just be such a professional
01:10:53and such a mentor,
01:10:55Kyrie Obie, Kyrie Kenobi
01:10:57can talk about mentoring
01:10:59Jalen and Jason all he wants, but the
01:11:01truth is, I think we all know, Al
01:11:03Horford's been the biggest mentor to all
01:11:05of these guys, the younger guys on the team.
01:11:07Al, Uncle Al.
01:11:09No doubt about that.
01:11:11Al's great, and everybody knows it,
01:11:13but, I mean, you have to
01:11:15not to discredit anything
01:11:17Danny did, because Danny brought in Tatum,
01:11:19brought in Brown, manipulated the draft
01:11:21to be able to get that, got the core,
01:11:23that also included Marcus Smart, which
01:11:25then turns into Chris Stapps for Zingas,
01:11:27so obviously the baseline is here, but
01:11:29you have to give Brad Stevens credit for
01:11:31basically what we thought was being
01:11:33fired up into the
01:11:35GM role, which didn't make sense to
01:11:37a lot of people at the time, because
01:11:39nobody had any
01:11:41inclination that that was something that Brad
01:11:43wanted to do, and I
01:11:45don't know that you can hit more home runs than
01:11:47Brad Stevens did in almost every
01:11:49single move that he made.
01:11:51Really remarkable, honestly, because
01:11:53you talk about the flipping of Horford
01:11:55for
01:11:57getting off of
01:11:59even though it costs you a pick there, it's something
01:12:01that you had to do. We thought Horford was going to
01:12:03come in here and what, that was
01:12:05three years ago, play what, 18 minutes
01:12:07a night, kind of on the back
01:12:09nine, he hadn't really played the year
01:12:11before. I thought that was a low
01:12:13impact move, not somebody who was going to come
01:12:15in here and be a starter and a core member of your
01:12:17team and a core member of a championship
01:12:19team. Then you talk about the Derek White
01:12:21deal and obviously the big swings
01:12:23this year to turn this roster into
01:12:25what was essentially a cheat code, and
01:12:27that's what kills me about the perception of this team,
01:12:29how people are going to be like, we didn't beat
01:12:31anybody and this and that. You know what?
01:12:33You can't do both things. You can't
01:12:35cry that basically
01:12:37they got gifted Porzingis and Holiday
01:12:39and then also say that they weren't that good.
01:12:41They were and you knew it and you
01:12:43were pissed off about it and you thought it was unfair
01:12:45and that's truly how you felt
01:12:47about this team being
01:12:49assembled. People looked for opportunities
01:12:51to knock them down a little bit here through
01:12:53the East because the East did
01:12:55suck a little bit in terms
01:12:57of how the playoffs, but you have like Embiid
01:12:59out there crying like he did. I thought that
01:13:01that was pathetic. So this was
01:13:03it's really hard to
01:13:05assemble a team with so much
01:13:07veteran talent and so people
01:13:09so uniquely like
01:13:11good at their particular
01:13:13jobs who try hard and who cared
01:13:15about winning as they did here. So
01:13:17I mean, it wasn't as we said the other
01:13:19day, just the better team. They were
01:13:21the best team and they were the best team all year
01:13:23and I think everybody knew it.
01:13:25Yeah, and I mean sometimes when
01:13:27you're looking at executives, it's
01:13:29not necessarily an executive
01:13:31bad, but sometimes another executive is a better
01:13:33fit. You see it happen all the time in
01:13:35coaching. You know, when I was in Detroit, Rick Carlyle
01:13:37did a hell of a job there,
01:13:39but they had a chance to get Larry
01:13:41Brown who did an even better job
01:13:43and won a chip his first year. You
01:13:45look at Danny H, did a hell of a job putting
01:13:47together some really, really good Celtics
01:13:49team. The 018 that won a title
01:13:51that was Danny obviously
01:13:53had a big part of that, but when you look
01:13:55at this championship caliber team, yes,
01:13:57he was able to position him to get
01:13:59David Brown, but it
01:14:01was the addition of Drew Holiday, the
01:14:03addition of Porzingis that put this team over the
01:14:05top and Brad was
01:14:07able to do that and you look at the
01:14:09assets that he used, he didn't have
01:14:11to touch his core at all.
01:14:13In fact, what he did was he
01:14:15got guys on the peripheral and Marcus Smart
01:14:17was a borderline core guy, but you
01:14:19added an even larger piece
01:14:21to your core by moving
01:14:23guys on and Brad deserves
01:14:25a lot of the credit cake for what
01:14:27he was able to do, him and Joe Mazzuolo.
01:14:29But obviously at the end of the day
01:14:31players will get the largest
01:14:33share of that, but you cannot
01:14:35diminish or just look past
01:14:37what Brad was able to do with this roster
01:14:39and obviously what Joe was able to do as a coach
01:14:41of this roster.
01:14:42You just said Joe. John, have we mentioned
01:14:44Joe yet?
01:14:45So it's not fair that we haven't
01:14:47and I think everyone's going to have to eat
01:14:49some here. So first I want everybody in the chat
01:14:51who during the course of the year said
01:14:53they will never win because of Joe.
01:14:55Maybe
01:14:57go ahead and tell us
01:14:59how you feel now. Should we go apology cam?
01:15:01I am not going to be in a damn apology
01:15:03cam to Joe Mazzuolo because I
01:15:05thought he was going to be better
01:15:07all year long.
01:15:09I think Mazzuolo
01:15:11coached his ass off
01:15:13in these finals. He absolutely did.
01:15:15I think he had a terrific game
01:15:17plan. I think he had a good sense of
01:15:19the moment. I think he knew when they were deviating
01:15:21from that plan. I think he made a lot of the
01:15:23right moves and a lot of the right rotations
01:15:25and yeah, can you question something
01:15:27here or there? Yeah, you can't be perfect
01:15:29but he absolutely
01:15:31he did. He
01:15:33attacked. He
01:15:35knew. It was like I said, it's almost
01:15:37Belichickian in the sense that
01:15:39if you do this, we can't
01:15:41lose. And that's kind of the
01:15:43what he set forth, the plan that he set
01:15:45forth here. And when the Mavs would make a
01:15:47little bit of a tweak, he would tweak back
01:15:49a little bit. Okay, they're trying to take this away. We can
01:15:51exploit it by doing this. He knew he had
01:15:53matchups. He knew he could exploit
01:15:55different things that the Mavericks were doing.
01:15:57He did it all series long.
01:15:59He was phenomenal and you could see as
01:16:01it got deeper and deeper into the playoffs,
01:16:03the idea of, and thank you, the
01:16:05Nick Batch, cheers to a winning season. Thank you
01:16:07so much for the Super Chats. Honestly, everybody, we
01:16:09really do appreciate it. It's overwhelming. Thanks, guys.
01:16:11I'm watching this show back tomorrow.
01:16:13I'll be able to see.
01:16:15But he was
01:16:17during the course of
01:16:19the season, a lot of times you'd be like, why isn't Joe
01:16:21stopping this and telling them what to do or doing
01:16:23this thing? And he preached
01:16:25learning
01:16:27and learning through
01:16:29failure and this and that. But when it got to the playoffs,
01:16:31he was jacked
01:16:33up and locked in, possession
01:16:35to possession, up, talking,
01:16:37jumping in, calling a timeout
01:16:39as soon as, it wasn't just to stop runs, as soon
01:16:41as he didn't like something. I hated that
01:16:43possession. Today,
01:16:45a great example
01:16:47of just a good
01:16:49Missoula moment. They went small for
01:16:51a little bit there in that second quarter, and Gafford
01:16:53gets back-to-back dunks on Tatum.
01:16:55After the first possession, Joe,
01:16:57who had just taken Hartford out of the game, was like, nope,
01:16:59I hate this bad idea, and he brought him back up
01:17:01to the scorers' table to get him back in. So
01:17:03immediately recognized, nope, not going to work.
01:17:05Don't like it. Don't like it. Quick adjustments.
01:17:07He did it all series long. He was awesome.
01:17:09And honestly, look, we give Joe
01:17:11a lot of crap because he's weird, and
01:17:13I think he's going to forever be
01:17:15that kind of weird, and it's going to be funny
01:17:17because it makes it amusing
01:17:19and it's fun for us to talk about. Now he kind of
01:17:21can be weird. But now he
01:17:23can be. Now he can be.
01:17:25Now he's earned it.
01:17:27All the great ones are a little
01:17:29weird. Yeah. I don't think
01:17:31anyone questions his basketball acumen. I think
01:17:33he is very much a savant.
01:17:35He really, really, really understands
01:17:37and knows what he's trying to do here.
01:17:39Jimmy, you're leaning out of the shot to the right. If you and
01:17:41Sherrod could scooch over a tad to the left,
01:17:43both of you will be in so much better
01:17:45shape. Sherrod,
01:17:47half a step. He said
01:17:49side over half.
01:17:51No, no, no. The other way, Sherrod, and then hug.
01:17:53And then I want you guys to hug.
01:17:55You want me to hug you?
01:17:57No, you don't have to.
01:17:59No.
01:18:01There were so many little
01:18:03things that the Celtics did
01:18:05better in game five that just completely
01:18:07go under the radar. Remember,
01:18:09Tatum was absolutely torching
01:18:11the house with a drive and kick game.
01:18:13In this game, it was more of the
01:18:15drive and dish to Drew Holiday rolling
01:18:17along the baseline. They weren't looking for
01:18:19him to drive and kick it to a three-pointer.
01:18:21They were just looking for him to drive and find
01:18:23someone cutting to the basket or moving
01:18:25without the ball. And little things
01:18:27like that just kind of don't really
01:18:29get a lot of attention. But then you look up and see Tatum's
01:18:31got damn near 10 assists in the first half.
01:18:33And almost none of those were
01:18:35guys making threes.
01:18:37Little things like that that, again,
01:18:39that's how Joe has figured out how to just be a better
01:18:41coach.
01:18:43Yeah, and
01:18:45it takes a little time. He has to grow
01:18:47in you a little bit. And I think, again, people were
01:18:49skeptical for a lot of reasons and
01:18:51not so much Joe's fault, but
01:18:53the way he came
01:18:55about as being the head coach, I mean,
01:18:57that was
01:18:59a unique situation, to put
01:19:01it lightly, right? A week
01:19:03before the season starts, he kind of gets
01:19:05thrust into this role here.
01:19:07And there was a lot of reasons to doubt
01:19:09like, who's this guy? He kind of came out of
01:19:11nowhere. Young guy.
01:19:13Yeah, exactly.
01:19:15And so
01:19:17he had to change a lot of people's
01:19:19minds. And I don't think he really cared to.
01:19:21But over time, just by
01:19:23being who he was, the players
01:19:25had already come to like him
01:19:27to begin with. What's up?
01:19:29We're sneaking in to see if I can get...
01:19:31It's amazing.
01:19:33And, you know, it could have gone
01:19:35to anybody. It could have gone to Jason.
01:19:37Jason.
01:19:39The MVP.
01:19:41You know, I can't talk about it.
01:19:43It's fantastic.
01:19:45It's just...
01:19:47I mean, of course, not just the series or the finals,
01:19:49but just the playoffs in general.
01:19:51And we did it together as a team.
01:19:53And that
01:19:55was the most important thing.
01:19:57Chris, you're on the left side, third row.
01:19:59You're very intentional
01:20:01both now and earlier
01:20:03making sure that you acknowledged
01:20:05JT. Why is that
01:20:07important to you? And also you reflected
01:20:09a lot during the playoffs about your
01:20:11journey and, you know, what you
01:20:13heard from people. And what does this mean
01:20:15to you in that context as well?
01:20:17Just our growth together. We've been through
01:20:19a lot.
01:20:21We've been through a lot.
01:20:23The losses, the expectations,
01:20:25the media, you know, said
01:20:27a lot of different types of things.
01:20:29We can't play together. We were never going to win.
01:20:31We heard it all.
01:20:33But we just blocked it out.
01:20:35And we just kept going.
01:20:37I trusted him. He trusted me.
01:20:39And we did it together.
01:20:41So, you know, to get to
01:20:43this point and share that experience
01:20:45with JT
01:20:47is just awesome.
01:20:49It's just amazing. It feels great.
01:20:51Same row.
01:20:53Jaylen, how does it feel
01:20:55to silence
01:20:57Dowers after last year
01:20:59against the Miami Heat?
01:21:01The way you guys lost. There was a lot
01:21:03of doubt about the team.
01:21:05Maybe even about
01:21:07your ability to make an all-NBA team
01:21:09this year. And now you win
01:21:11the Eastern Conference Final MVP.
01:21:13You're an NBA champion.
01:21:15You're an MVP of the Finals.
01:21:17Do you feel at all vindicated?
01:21:19I mean,
01:21:21if you would have asked me that
01:21:23maybe a year ago, I probably would say
01:21:25yeah. Just at the point that I
01:21:27got to right now.
01:21:29It feels great,
01:21:31but
01:21:33any of the past awards,
01:21:35it is what it is.
01:21:37You had the Dowers. They may be
01:21:39quieted now, but they'll be back.
01:21:41They'll probably be back next year. There's something else
01:21:43to say.
01:21:45Just embrace that moment
01:21:47the same. You don't have to
01:21:49do it again.
01:21:51You're right. Gary, third row.
01:21:55From how you were
01:21:57drafted and a lot of Celtic fans
01:21:59had not heard of you coming out of Cal.
01:22:01They said
01:22:03it was kind of an unknown.
01:22:07From that journey
01:22:09to being doubted
01:22:11and all of what they said coming out of
01:22:13college and then
01:22:15signing the contract
01:22:17this summer and all of what you
01:22:19heard, can you kind of
01:22:21encapsulate it?
01:22:25I can't.
01:22:27I absolutely
01:22:29can't.
01:22:31The story, the journey is awesome.
01:22:33Just being drafted
01:22:35here in Boston.
01:22:37A lot of the people
01:22:39probably didn't watch me play out
01:22:41in the Pac-12 at Cal.
01:22:43It led to a lot of people
01:22:45feeling
01:22:47bad.
01:22:49I just came in and kept my head down.
01:22:55To be here in this moment now
01:22:57after all the years.
01:23:03Alright.
01:23:05There you have it.
01:23:07You guys take a little break? Are you guys alright?
01:23:09You look tuckered out.
01:23:11We're just staying in.
01:23:13Jaylin has that soothing sound.
01:23:15He's taking it all in.
01:23:17Not all of us have been sitting for the last two hours.
01:23:19It's all good, though.
01:23:21Oh, geez.
01:23:25Why don't you have a stool?
01:23:27For those of us who've been
01:23:29here as long as Jaylin has been here,
01:23:31it really is amazing to see
01:23:33how far he has come.
01:23:35This is a guy that, again, got booed
01:23:37when he was drafted, which is something
01:23:39that you look through the years.
01:23:41Guys taking it to the top, that never
01:23:43happens.
01:23:45For him to embrace that role,
01:23:47I remember his first
01:23:49NBA start was at Cleveland
01:23:51against LeBron James. I remember
01:23:53talking to him before the game. He didn't
01:23:55seem like this wide-eyed young kid
01:23:57who's about to go against one of the goats of the game.
01:23:59He's just like, I'm just going to go out there and do what I do.
01:24:03He's carried himself with a level of maturity
01:24:05throughout his time in Boston
01:24:07that I think prepared him
01:24:09for this moment.
01:24:11The opportunity to be great
01:24:13on the grandest of stages,
01:24:15he was ready for that.
01:24:17Two years ago, he wasn't.
01:24:19Two years ago, I think he was trying to
01:24:21prove himself. I think he was trying to
01:24:23validate himself as a great player.
01:24:25On this particular stage,
01:24:27that didn't matter. It was about winning
01:24:29the series, proving that you
01:24:31and Jason and this team
01:24:33were the best thing
01:24:35going. He did a great job of that
01:24:37and certainly
01:24:39was the best player throughout the course of the playoff.
01:24:41I think he finally was able to stop
01:24:43letting it bother him that
01:24:45people didn't see him the way he saw himself.
01:24:47He never
01:24:49stopped trying to prove people wrong
01:24:51or prove himself right,
01:24:53but he stopped letting it negatively affect
01:24:55him to the point where it would affect his game.
01:24:57He played more freely out there. He trusted
01:24:59his game. He got to his spots.
01:25:01He's able to turn up the intensity,
01:25:03but he's also, at the same time,
01:25:05able to play even-keeled
01:25:07a little bit more, level-headed,
01:25:09not let bad plays spiral into the next
01:25:11bad play, not let
01:25:13a bad performance
01:25:15impact the next performance,
01:25:17let's say, the next game,
01:25:19not let something somebody said get to him
01:25:21in a bad way. He got to the point where he just said,
01:25:23F it. I'm just going to go be me.
01:25:25I'm going to do my thing unapologetically,
01:25:27Jaylin Brown.
01:25:29We saw the result of that.
01:25:31Eastern Conference Finals MVP,
01:25:33NBA Finals MVP, NBA Champion,
01:25:35highest paid player in the NBA.
01:25:37It's getting harder and harder
01:25:39for this guy to find
01:25:41reasons to stay motivated, but he will
01:25:43because he does thrive
01:25:45off of that. He will
01:25:47thrive off people being like, he didn't deserve
01:25:49the NBA Finals MVP.
01:25:51That's what he's been able to do,
01:25:53and to his credit, he turns it into a good thing.
01:25:55We've just seen it as he matures.
01:25:57He's able to harness that
01:25:59in a way that he wasn't before.
01:26:01That ability to harness is huge
01:26:03because he plays with such
01:26:05energy, such passion, such fire.
01:26:07Sometimes, I thought earlier in his career,
01:26:09it would get a little out of hand.
01:26:11Reckless
01:26:13is probably a word with the ball handling
01:26:15and such. He's controlled chaos
01:26:17often when you look at the things
01:26:19that he's able to do, and they needed that
01:26:21in order to get over the hump and bring home
01:26:23banner 18.
01:26:25I don't think years
01:26:27ago you would have heard him first sentence
01:26:29out of his mouth to be
01:26:31crediting Jason Tatum.
01:26:33I don't know that the roles were reversed
01:26:35with Tatum. If he had won the MVP,
01:26:37you would have heard him crediting Brown
01:26:39years ago. I think that we can
01:26:41all see now they're over that.
01:26:43They don't need to be best
01:26:45friends. They definitely are
01:26:47teammates that are
01:26:49a super
01:26:51duo. They play off
01:26:53each other. They need each other.
01:26:55They've come a hell of a long way.
01:26:57I've got to tell you guys, the court
01:26:59is still jammed.
01:27:01You can't see the board.
01:27:03I know. I'm too.
01:27:05I'm sitting in Shams
01:27:07Shirani's seat.
01:27:09Oh, you're in 18?
01:27:11Yeah.
01:27:13See me?
01:27:15I don't know where you are.
01:27:17I'm in 18 or 19
01:27:19right next to the normal media
01:27:21section. They have a four-seat
01:27:23table here.
01:27:25Well, Nick, tell us
01:27:27when the court is starting to clear because
01:27:29we want to do our quick garden report
01:27:31late night hit with everybody.
01:27:33John, the security is left.
01:27:35There's no security there.
01:27:37Security is left, but
01:27:39there would be nowhere to go right now
01:27:41because...
01:27:43Maybe the corner
01:27:45opposite
01:27:47Jimmy's seat. Yeah, there's definitely a corner
01:27:49we could probably huddle up in
01:27:51about 15-20 minutes maybe.
01:27:53I think
01:27:55where there's a will, there's a way.
01:27:57We'll get Amit down there on the scene.
01:27:59Amit will clear it out.
01:28:01I got to get my confetti, so I'll be down there.
01:28:03I got you some, Jim.
01:28:05Did you? You're what a guy.
01:28:07Oh, I also
01:28:09found one of these.
01:28:11Figured I'd do this in honor of Bobby.
01:28:13Did you get the bucket hat?
01:28:15It was in the office
01:28:17and I had to bring a camera over,
01:28:19so I look like Gilligan for crying out loud.
01:28:21Wow.
01:28:23I don't know if you're selling any of those.
01:28:25Guys, real quick, we were talking about
01:28:27Tatum and Brown
01:28:29and how Nick said
01:28:31they don't like each other.
01:28:33I did not say that.
01:28:35Nick's been saying that for years now.
01:28:37I did not say that.
01:28:39That's what I heard.
01:28:41You've been consistent on the show that that's not true.
01:28:43Right.
01:28:45But
01:28:47like I said,
01:28:49I don't care
01:28:51about the MVP deeply,
01:28:53but people do, and that stuff matters.
01:28:55Look at someone like Cedric Maxwell
01:28:57being on a team with Larry Bird.
01:28:59He's still dining out on that for a while.
01:29:01I'm not saying he didn't have other accomplishments,
01:29:03but that's a big part of his...
01:29:05He is.
01:29:07That's a big part of his
01:29:09legacy and career.
01:29:11Jalen Brown has that now forever.
01:29:13Here's Tatum talking about
01:29:15Brown winning the MVP.
01:29:17Brown did give a shout-out immediately
01:29:19at the podium
01:29:21in the ceremony to Tatum,
01:29:23which I do think
01:29:25he recognized.
01:29:27I want to also say,
01:29:29he is good.
01:29:31Tatum's been a little...
01:29:33He absolutely said,
01:29:35my running mate or my partner in crime
01:29:37is what he called him.
01:29:39He quickly, quickly gave it to him.
01:29:41But when Tatum's been asked about Brown,
01:29:43it's been interesting.
01:29:47I can't wait to hear this.
01:29:49I can't wait.
01:29:51When Jalen won
01:29:53the finals MVP, the first thing he did
01:29:55was look at you and said,
01:29:57we did this together.
01:29:59What did that mean to you?
01:30:01First of all, congrats to him.
01:30:03What?
01:30:05Well-deserved. Extremely happy
01:30:07for him.
01:30:09We all deserve it.
01:30:11That was a hell of an accomplishment.
01:30:13The main goal for us was to win
01:30:15the championship.
01:30:17We didn't care
01:30:19who got finals MVP.
01:30:21I know that
01:30:23I need him through this journey.
01:30:25He needs me.
01:30:29It was great to see him
01:30:31have that moment and share that moment with him.
01:30:33I'm extremely happy for him.
01:30:35Well-deserved.
01:30:37That was big time.
01:30:39He earned it.
01:30:41Wow.
01:30:43Nice. Damn.
01:30:45That's what the people wanted to see.
01:30:47That's what we wanted.
01:30:49That's a great way
01:30:51to put it, Jimmy.
01:30:53Hey, Jimmy, can you guys turn down your light a tad?
01:30:55Somebody just jump in there.
01:30:57Turn down your light just a little bit.
01:30:59It's coming in hot.
01:31:01Jimmy's going to do it himself.
01:31:03Great way
01:31:05to put it, Jimmy.
01:31:07What did he say? I missed it, Jimmy.
01:31:09Nothing.
01:31:11He got through it.
01:31:13He got through it.
01:31:19He got through it.
01:31:21He didn't die in the middle of it.
01:31:23Pretty good stuff.
01:31:25A little bit more
01:31:27from Tatum while these guys fiddle around
01:31:29with things. Tatum talking
01:31:31about the general resiliency of the team
01:31:33getting to
01:31:35this stage and being able to
01:31:37obviously
01:31:39win it all. Here we go.
01:31:41You talked a lot about Kobe Bryant as one of your idols
01:31:43and somebody you pat in your game
01:31:45after and your motivation after.
01:31:47Once you finally win a championship
01:31:49now that you can say,
01:31:51I know what it took. What did it actually
01:31:53take? Was there something from Kobe that you learned?
01:31:55Was it just something you learned on your own
01:31:57throughout this journey? What did it actually take
01:31:59to get over that hump?
01:32:01Fifty fair go attempts.
01:32:03It took being relentless.
01:32:05It took
01:32:09being on the other side of this and losing
01:32:11in the finals and being at literally the lowest
01:32:13mark in a basketball
01:32:15career that you could be.
01:32:17To the
01:32:19following year thinking that was going to be
01:32:21the time and
01:32:23come up short again.
01:32:27People have
01:32:29said it before but coming up
01:32:31short and having failures makes
01:32:33this moment that much better.
01:32:35Because you know what it feels
01:32:37like to lose. You know what it feels like
01:32:39to be on the other side of this
01:32:41and be in a locker room and hearing the other
01:32:43teams celebrating and having them celebrate on your
01:32:45home floor. That was
01:32:47devastating.
01:32:49Now
01:32:53to elevate yourself
01:32:55in a space that
01:32:57all your favorite players
01:32:59have been. Everybody that
01:33:01they consider greats or legends
01:33:03have won a championship.
01:33:05The guys I looked up to have won a championship.
01:33:07Multiple championships.
01:33:09Now
01:33:11I can
01:33:13walk in those rooms and be a part
01:33:15of that.
01:33:17It's a hell of a feeling.
01:33:23I dreamed about what it would be like but this is
01:33:25ten times better.
01:33:27He's trying to keep his emotions in check.
01:33:29Honestly, great stuff.
01:33:31Great stuff from Tatum.
01:33:33I want to say something here.
01:33:37We tease about some elements
01:33:39of it.
01:33:41You never see the emotion
01:33:43come up sometimes.
01:33:45You want him to be a little bit more of a vocal
01:33:47leader. What I will say and I've always
01:33:49defended and I think is the greatest
01:33:51misnomer and the greatest misconception of Jason Tatum
01:33:53is his idea that he's hunting
01:33:55stats, which I've never thought.
01:33:57I just always thought that in his mind,
01:33:59he always thought that the greatest way that he could
01:34:01impact winning was to score.
01:34:03This year, especially this playoff where he
01:34:05struggled to score, you found out how much
01:34:07more he was doing and willing to do while winning.
01:34:09It wasn't that that
01:34:11altered my perception here. What I'll say
01:34:13is that's about as happy as
01:34:15we've seen him. That's an
01:34:17incredible amount of relief. You can
01:34:19almost see he's been wearing it on him
01:34:21for the past couple of years that
01:34:23I didn't win. We didn't
01:34:25win. What did I not do
01:34:27that I could have done to
01:34:29help us win?
01:34:31I've never seen him like this.
01:34:33Obviously, you're never going to be
01:34:35happier than when you won an NBA championship. It's just not
01:34:37saying a lot. It looked like
01:34:39you could just see him from every minute from
01:34:41the second he stepped on the court to go
01:34:43get the tropes. When he went to the bench,
01:34:45the big hug with Joe and all
01:34:47of that thing, it was just a release like
01:34:49he did it. You really do
01:34:51understand and get the sense
01:34:53that it really isn't
01:34:55always about winning. I do think that's
01:34:57something people have totally wrong
01:34:59with
01:35:01the idea that he's
01:35:03just interested in the MVP.
01:35:05I think he wanted the MVP.
01:35:07I think he would have been really happy if he won the
01:35:09MVP. That's not what he was playing this for.
01:35:13I just want to put that out there because
01:35:15I think people get that wrong a lot.
01:35:17I think it's natural
01:35:19to be a superstar player
01:35:21or be told you're a superstar player and then
01:35:23want to put up superstar numbers. I would
01:35:25agree with you, John. I think everybody on
01:35:27the show probably feels the same way.
01:35:29Tatum's a guy that
01:35:31wants to win. I said this
01:35:33earlier on this show
01:35:35is that
01:35:37if you're a Celtics player
01:35:39on this team, you probably didn't
01:35:41feel any relief at all
01:35:43until the final buzzer tonight.
01:35:45When you win games when you're expected to win,
01:35:47it's not a celebration. It's more just
01:35:49an exhale like, okay, we made it to the
01:35:51... We did what we were supposed
01:35:53to do, but we're expected to win. We have to keep
01:35:55winning. We have to keep winning. It's not like
01:35:57no expectations. Let's
01:35:59just go out there and if we win, great. Let's
01:36:01party. It's
01:36:03like your obligation is to win.
01:36:05Now that they've completed the task,
01:36:07they can celebrate.
01:36:09That's what you saw, at least, that you mentioned
01:36:11there, John, and the smile.
01:36:13He's still choosing his words
01:36:15carefully, and he's still
01:36:17Jason Tatum in the way he speaks, but
01:36:19you can just see a little bit of a difference in the way
01:36:21that it comes out.
01:36:23I feel like that's probably from the top down,
01:36:25but certainly Tatum's a guy that he's
01:36:27had a ton of pressure put on him since he came into
01:36:29the league, justly
01:36:31or not. He's been
01:36:33close, but ultimately, the
01:36:35knock on him and Brown is
01:36:37that these guys
01:36:39can't win, or they can't win together, or they don't know
01:36:41what it takes, or they're never going to have the
01:36:43confidence, or the attitude, blah, blah, blah. You can go down the line.
01:36:45The haters are
01:36:47still going to hate, but at the end of the day, they proved
01:36:49everybody wrong, or they proved those people wrong.
01:36:51There are still a lot of supporters, too. A lot
01:36:53of people, especially on this show
01:36:55that watch, there are huge Tatum and Brown guys
01:36:57that believed, and you've got to give them all the
01:36:59credit in the world for sticking with their players,
01:37:01because there were points over the last few years
01:37:03where some people doubted if
01:37:05one of those guys needed to go, or
01:37:07should go, or if Jalen Brown should be
01:37:09extended with the Max, or if he should be
01:37:11created, and if Tatum could ever be
01:37:13the guy. And so,
01:37:15whether or not they have to go out and do this whole thing
01:37:17all over again next season is besides the point,
01:37:19because tonight, they're the best team in the
01:37:21world. They're the best.
01:37:23They can consider themselves the best players in the world,
01:37:25and nobody can say shit about it.
01:37:27Well, but they will. They will, but
01:37:29okay. They will, but
01:37:31Jimmy's going to just say
01:37:33hi, haters.
01:37:35Yeah, that's it. That's really it.
01:37:37Here's the thing. People don't say that anymore.
01:37:39They choose to go back
01:37:41and forth. Just say hi, haters.
01:37:43To piggyback
01:37:45on that a little bit, because we
01:37:47did discuss this,
01:37:51Jalen won the
01:37:53conference MVP, and Tatum,
01:37:55because of the shooting splits,
01:37:57and they still didn't end up
01:37:59great. At the end of the finals, he subbed
01:38:0140 for the finals, and he
01:38:03caught a lot of flack for it.
01:38:05We were saying, when you have to explain
01:38:07why a guy's been good,
01:38:09you're already losing the argument.
01:38:11That's what's happening, is he's losing.
01:38:13He lost the battle of optics a little bit,
01:38:15in terms of the national media, because
01:38:17he didn't look like he was taking over
01:38:19a game the way people are used to seeing people
01:38:21take over games, which is just to drop buckets.
01:38:23You see Luka score, and you're like, man,
01:38:25he's tough. You're not taking into account
01:38:27that he was a turnstile on defense, or
01:38:29doing other things that were not helping
01:38:31his team, whereas Tatum was.
01:38:33The stats are a little bit grisly when you look at the
01:38:35national
01:38:37finals numbers, and again,
01:38:39here it is, 22 points, 38 kills.
01:38:41That's not like alpha dog
01:38:43stuff that
01:38:45people expect. There is a possibility
01:38:47that Tatum's
01:38:49legacy was going to take a hit,
01:38:51win or lose here,
01:38:53because people would
01:38:55spin the narrative however they
01:38:57wanted to. But if he did lose, or
01:38:59if the Jays did lose with this
01:39:01team, with this path that they had
01:39:03as an inferior opponent, the Mavericks,
01:39:05the narrative surrounding this team would
01:39:07have been really ugly.
01:39:09That's definitely a pressure
01:39:11and a weight that they had to kind of know
01:39:13is like, we can't
01:39:15not win it here. And they did.
01:39:17And as Jimmy said, and as
01:39:19Nick said, there will still be guys
01:39:21who are going to come at them a little bit.
01:39:23I know a lot of people will complain about the quality
01:39:25of these finals. Yes, Jimmy?
01:39:27I'll let you finish. I just wanted to say something.
01:39:29No, I want you to say something.
01:39:31I was going to say, I think some of that narrative
01:39:33that, you know, how much of that was
01:39:35from national, how much of that was local, but at the same time
01:39:37people are finding
01:39:39the Celtics just steamrolled the playoffs.
01:39:41I mean, there really wasn't much
01:39:43negative you could find
01:39:45from a team perspective. So you start to
01:39:47pick at players, and you start to try to
01:39:49find something to talk about
01:39:51and criticize. But you couldn't criticize,
01:39:53and again, it goes back to the way that they won games this year.
01:39:55They played team basketball.
01:39:57Brad assembled a super team, essentially.
01:39:59The modern day version of one.
01:40:01Not a super team in the sense where it's like
01:40:03three friends who think, hey, this would be
01:40:05fun to play together, even though they don't fit.
01:40:07He assembled a team,
01:40:09an actual team of players who can still
01:40:11play ball, fit each other's style.
01:40:13They're so good, three of them are going to
01:40:15be in the Olympics, you know, like
01:40:17on Team USA because they're such
01:40:19team players, you know, like you're putting
01:40:21White and Holiday on there to round out
01:40:23your team, you know, like
01:40:25it's amazing. They have the right attitude.
01:40:27And Tatum does, too. I mean, he really does.
01:40:29He could have pouted about his
01:40:31performance, but he went up there
01:40:33at the podium after every win,
01:40:35by the way, and
01:40:37he was not making it
01:40:39about him, you know? I mean, he's going to get asked
01:40:41about his performance, and yeah, he's got no choice but to
01:40:43respond, but it's always been about the team,
01:40:45and so you gotta tip your
01:40:47cap, tip your hard hat, I guess,
01:40:49to the way he handled things, and
01:40:51yeah, he's going to see a lot more
01:40:53criticism. There's going to be a microscope on him, and no,
01:40:55he didn't have an iconic,
01:40:57anywhere close to an iconic
01:40:59postseason or
01:41:01NBA Finals run,
01:41:03but at the end of the day, his team
01:41:05that he led, for the most part,
01:41:07throughout the season, steamrolled
01:41:09the playoffs, and they're the NBA champions, and
01:41:11ultimately, I think at some point, John,
01:41:13they all got together.
01:41:15Maybe it was the very beginning of the season. They just said,
01:41:17our goal is to win a championship.
01:41:19We're going to put the personal accolades
01:41:21aside. Yeah, we're going to put the
01:41:23personal accolades. Al's going to come off the bench.
01:41:25Holiday's going to take a reduced role.
01:41:27Tatum
01:41:29and Brown are going to coexist, and they're going to
01:41:31make each other better, and they're going to win a championship.
01:41:33If they do those things, on paper
01:41:35at least, they're the best team. If they do that on the court,
01:41:37there should be no issues, and to their credit, that's what they
01:41:39did. And Tatum, to his credit,
01:41:41showed a different kind of leadership
01:41:43that I don't think
01:41:45he gets enough credit for.
01:41:47Jalen became more vocal. There's no
01:41:49doubt about that. Definitely.
01:41:51Tatum, his leadership was
01:41:53more by example,
01:41:55not only in terms of his play, but also
01:41:57in terms of his words.
01:41:59We joke about how
01:42:01whenever he's asked about Jalen, he talks about
01:42:03we, we, we, but
01:42:05that's kind of how he
01:42:07played this season.
01:42:09It was we, not me, right?
01:42:11It was the Mbutu style. That's what the
01:42:1308 team used to go with.
01:42:15You look at Game 5, and we talked about how
01:42:17Sam Houser was so impactful. When Sam
01:42:19couldn't hit the broad side of a barn,
01:42:21you would see Tatum
01:42:23pulling him aside during games
01:42:25and just really encouraging him, the kind of stuff
01:42:27that didn't make headlines.
01:42:29There was a talk about national media, but
01:42:31when you look at that
01:42:33moment, and you look at how Sam was able to
01:42:35stay confident, that wasn't
01:42:37just an internal thing. That was because the best player
01:42:39on your damn team was telling you, you need to keep shooting.
01:42:41And little things like that,
01:42:43I think, are part of the
01:42:45fabric that makes Jason Tatum who he is
01:42:47and why he's a champion and why
01:42:49he's comfortable whether he's getting
01:42:51credit or not. At the end of
01:42:53the day, you're not going to be remembered
01:42:55for whether you won that
01:42:57trophy. You're going to remember whether you
01:42:59have put a banner up there. Because around
01:43:01here, that's the only thing that matters.
01:43:03The only thing that matters.
01:43:05These guys are eating and drinking
01:43:07for free for a long time now.
01:43:09They are. One thing we
01:43:11didn't get huge into, considering
01:43:13all the time we spent on it,
01:43:15and I think it's worth talking about, is Chris
01:43:17Dapps.
01:43:19Should we wait for Bobby and blow
01:43:21his brain?
01:43:23I'm out if that's going to happen.
01:43:25What are they even doing here?
01:43:29I sat next to Bobby when poor Zyngus
01:43:31got checked in. I thought his head was going to
01:43:33pop off.
01:43:41I think, and again,
01:43:43you had to recalibrate what it was
01:43:45you were expecting him to do
01:43:47here.
01:43:49We might
01:43:51have to recalibrate Bobby's brain a little bit on
01:43:53the poor Zyngus stuff, but
01:43:55maybe game four was
01:43:57let's play him maybe. Maybe it was
01:43:59the human victory cigar, but I'm not really
01:44:01going to play him unless I have a specific reason.
01:44:03It was pretty
01:44:05clear immediately
01:44:07from the warm-ups, how quickly
01:44:09they ruled that he was in, and then Joe saying
01:44:11he's got no limits. Of course he had limits,
01:44:13but that they were going to play him in rotation.
01:44:15What did we say before the game?
01:44:17Four four-minute stints. That's all
01:44:19we wanted. That's exactly what he did, basically.
01:44:21I mean,
01:44:23with a couple quick ins and outs
01:44:25sometimes where they were subbing in
01:44:27offense and defense, but
01:44:29basically it was, can you get enough
01:44:31from poor Zyngus to
01:44:33feel better about what your lineup is out there
01:44:35doing, to not have to play
01:44:37Xavier Tillman, to not get
01:44:39beat up on the board so much, to have another
01:44:41shooter out there that the Mavs should have to pay attention to,
01:44:43that it sucked the center out.
01:44:45He did. He kind of was a decoy. He's not
01:44:47out there bombing threes.
01:44:49They put him in the post once. He hit a couple
01:44:51free throws. That's what he did.
01:44:53That's all he needed to do.
01:44:55I think this was
01:44:57exactly what you were hoping for out of
01:44:59poor Zyngus. I don't think you could have expected any more.
01:45:01Outside
01:45:03of that first stint where
01:45:05the Mavs got him in a blunder there
01:45:07and were just
01:45:09running all over the place.
01:45:11Like Ray Allen out there.
01:45:13He was right there.
01:45:15He was all over the place. He looked like that Rudy
01:45:17Gobert meme a little bit.
01:45:19When he's trying to guard Steph Curry.
01:45:21He was just dancing around a little bit.
01:45:23Other than that,
01:45:25it's all you wanted. It was great. And the lift
01:45:27was great, which is again something
01:45:29we had to describe to Bobby, how emotion
01:45:31matters. It was a big lift.
01:45:33Not just
01:45:35on X's and O's here.
01:45:37I don't get it.
01:45:39Bobby does not compute.
01:45:41I mean, there's a difference
01:45:43when you've got thousands and thousands of people
01:45:45cheering and clapping for you
01:45:47pretty much the minute you take
01:45:49each step into the court versus
01:45:51Dallas. Even pregame.
01:45:53Not pregame, but right when the players
01:45:55come out of the tunnel, he didn't come out right away.
01:45:57He didn't come out right away, right?
01:45:59But then he came out on his own and then the whole place
01:46:01Yeah, and he's soaking it up,
01:46:03which was smart on his part.
01:46:05You're right, John.
01:46:07Other than that first... He does.
01:46:09But you know what? When you look at the places
01:46:11he's been from a basketball standpoint,
01:46:13can you really blame it?
01:46:15This is the first time he's been on a team
01:46:17that you actually had
01:46:19a semblance of hope that your season
01:46:21would not end on the last game
01:46:23of the regular season.
01:46:25And to his credit,
01:46:27he absolutely soaked it all in.
01:46:29And he did not care
01:46:31what role he had to play.
01:46:33And frankly, to me,
01:46:35Porzingis had one of the greatest jobs
01:46:37on this roster. I mean, think about it.
01:46:39You're making face of the franchise money
01:46:41as the third,
01:46:43maybe fourth best player.
01:46:45That is a great deal.
01:46:47That's incredible.
01:46:49Coming from a situation
01:46:51in New York where he was expected to be
01:46:53the face of the franchise.
01:46:55Struggled in Washington,
01:46:57struggled in Dallas.
01:46:59He turned it around in Washington in the end.
01:47:01He did, but he didn't struggle.
01:47:03The team saw it.
01:47:05He's been in some losing situations
01:47:07for sure.
01:47:09I honestly think Boston gave him
01:47:11a second lease on his basketball life.
01:47:13I think he felt like
01:47:15he was rediscovered
01:47:17in a way.
01:47:19I can only imagine what it was like
01:47:21just playing on that Wizards team
01:47:23after the hype surrounding him
01:47:25going into the league
01:47:27and the expectations.
01:47:29He's on a Wizards team that's going absolutely nowhere.
01:47:31He put in a good, decent season, but still
01:47:33in and out of the lineup, health reasons and whatnot.
01:47:35Gets the call.
01:47:37Gets traded to Boston.
01:47:39Immediately, you go from one of the worst teams in the league
01:47:41to arguably the best team in the league.
01:47:45I think, obviously,
01:47:47the games played was about as expected,
01:47:49but as far as his effect on the team,
01:47:51that was even better than I expected.
01:47:54I just felt like
01:47:56the way he had an effect
01:47:58on this team, whether it was
01:48:00the three-point shooting, whether it was the low post,
01:48:02whether it was on the defensive side,
01:48:04he just fit immediately.
01:48:06He did give them that.
01:48:08Again, we talk about if it's not Tatum or Brown,
01:48:10it could be literally any one of these other guys.
01:48:12Porzingis, White, Holliday,
01:48:14Hauser.
01:48:16When Porzingis was
01:48:18really feeling it,
01:48:20he was borderline impossible
01:48:22to stop.
01:48:24His defense really was what just jumped out at me.
01:48:26A unicorn.
01:48:28That mattered.
01:48:30It even mattered tonight.
01:48:32It even mattered tonight when he was limited.
01:48:34His presence mattered.
01:48:36After that slow start,
01:48:38defensively, he really picked it up.
01:48:40Started moving a little bit better.
01:48:42The reason he struggled early on was he wasn't really sure
01:48:44physically what he could
01:48:46do at that end of the floor.
01:48:48He was very slow in those first
01:48:50possessions coming off the job screen.
01:48:52I think when he realized that I can move
01:48:54like I normally move,
01:48:56he was much better at
01:48:58just forcing them to keep swinging the ball
01:49:00as opposed to getting uncontested,
01:49:02wide-open threes.
01:49:04Facts, my dog.
01:49:06Facts, my dog.
01:49:08What I think we're going to do here
01:49:10and we're approaching the two-hour mark,
01:49:12we did promise we're going to bring the group together
01:49:14and we're going to do that, but in order to do that,
01:49:16we have to shut things down for a few minutes here
01:49:18and make it happen.
01:49:20We are going to try to do that
01:49:22and what we are going to do, guys...
01:49:24News team, assemble!
01:49:26The news team is going to assemble.
01:49:28We're bringing a Garden Report late-night edition.
01:49:30We'll be live right after this.
01:49:32We just need a few minutes to set it up.
01:49:34We're going to get the whole gang on the court together.
01:49:36We're going to hang out.
01:49:38We're going to just bring the whole gang together one last time
01:49:40to talk about it and help bring in this
01:49:42championship celebration
01:49:44with you guys.
01:49:46We can do a little of this.
01:49:48Yeah, let's do it.
01:49:50Sprinkle some confetti.
01:49:52Oh, I wasn't looking, yeah.
01:49:54Don't forget, I can't see unless I look down there.
01:49:56Wow, you got some.
01:49:58There's plenty.
01:50:00Oh, there's plenty still out there.
01:50:02I think we should set up
01:50:04on the final stage.
01:50:06I think that'll be gone.
01:50:08No, it's still up.
01:50:10Hey, before we wrap this,
01:50:12I heard when I was relocating
01:50:14certain people
01:50:16apologizing for Joe Mizzoula.
01:50:18I'm not going to apologize,
01:50:20but I am going to compliment
01:50:22him on how great he was
01:50:24this playoffs.
01:50:26The whole playoffs.
01:50:28I'm not going to apologize because I know next season
01:50:30I'm going to despise him again
01:50:32when they won't stop shooting threes
01:50:34and he won't call timeouts.
01:50:36That's so boomery.
01:50:38The threes are the reason he won.
01:50:40I don't care. It's not going to change.
01:50:42I like basketball how I like it.
01:50:44That's that. I'm not going to apologize,
01:50:46but I am going to give him his flowers
01:50:48because he was
01:50:50awesome.
01:50:52Now he's going to be able to sleep.
01:50:54He's going to be able to sleep tonight now, Nick.
01:50:56Nick, why don't you and I keep this
01:50:58going a little bit. I'm going to let these guys go.
01:51:00Jimmy and Sherrod, you guys can head downstairs
01:51:02while I'm going to break that down.
01:51:04We'll keep talking a little, Nick, and hold the line here.
01:51:06If Bobby's out there and he wants
01:51:08to jump in with us, he can
01:51:10as we wait to set it up.
01:51:12I don't see him.
01:51:14We'll hang on here a little bit.
01:51:16Was that our shot?
01:51:18John, was that our shot from the locker room?
01:51:20Yeah, that was our stuff.
01:51:22That was great stuff.
01:51:24We'll get some more of that
01:51:26on there as well.
01:51:28Look at it, dude.
01:51:30Nothing but boomers left, but I promise
01:51:32we'll get the kids on. We're going to get Joe Sway on.
01:51:34We're going to get...
01:51:36Oh, did you put that yourself, Tom?
01:51:38Yeah.
01:51:42You want me to get rid of it? It's Larry's.
01:51:44Joe's so doubling down on stupidity.
01:51:48I'm the guy up here
01:51:50and you're the guy chatting back there.
01:51:52I'm doubling down on stupidity.
01:51:54Yeah, no.
01:51:56He was great. George, thank you, buddy.
01:51:58You have...
01:52:00Not only that, he was with us
01:52:02on... George and many guys here
01:52:04have been with us
01:52:06from the bubble days, but also
01:52:08with our chats on locker room
01:52:10and all of that stuff that we were doing.
01:52:12It's been fun to hang out with you guys
01:52:14for these last four years.
01:52:16A lot of OGs here. Obviously, we have Dudley,
01:52:18we have Cas, we've got Blorp,
01:52:20ATL, IOL.
01:52:22I mean, so many.
01:52:24Judah.
01:52:26There's insane amounts of people
01:52:28here who have been
01:52:30following us all the way through.
01:52:32It's really great to see you guys
01:52:34still here and still hanging out.
01:52:38Honestly,
01:52:40I got to tell you,
01:52:42I know you guys all say
01:52:44you give me a lot of crap.
01:52:46I love it, to be honest with you.
01:52:48That's why I keep showing up in the chat room
01:52:50show after show.
01:52:52It's really cool to be on here now.
01:52:54This ain't my show anymore.
01:52:56There's a new...
01:52:58There's the new crew that has just
01:53:00taken it to a whole new level.
01:53:02I'm now a fan.
01:53:04Colin, thank you
01:53:06for that. I am a
01:53:08fan of yours.
01:53:10I'm now a fan. I miss being
01:53:12in the chat room when I'm on the show. My eyes
01:53:14are looking at the chat.
01:53:16Yes, I am Generation
01:53:18X, not a boomer, Charlie.
01:53:20Thank you.
01:53:22Anything over 40 is a boomer.
01:53:24Anything over 25 is a
01:53:26boomer, I think.
01:53:28Jimmy's in boomer territory now.
01:53:30Josue's in boomer territory.
01:53:32Big Nick energy.
01:53:34I've been more quiet than
01:53:36I've ever been.
01:53:38Joey, if I've blocked you, it's because you deserved it.
01:53:40I actually don't know. If I did, I apologize.
01:53:44I do apologize.
01:53:46We love you too, Zach.
01:53:48Yeah, so...
01:53:50You know.
01:53:52I mean...
01:53:54Tatum, you have been here for seven years. I do appreciate that.
01:54:00We are
01:54:02coming back for 19 next year.
01:54:04So I'm a boomer, what the heck.
01:54:06I gotta say,
01:54:08this is incredible, John. I mean, I'm just sitting up
01:54:10here in the media section, looking down on the
01:54:12court. There's the
01:54:14confetti everywhere still.
01:54:16Players are on and off the court,
01:54:18literally. KP was just
01:54:20out here.
01:54:22Tatum was out here a little earlier.
01:54:24They come out to see their friends. And in the meantime,
01:54:26there are still fans here.
01:54:28Louise, you
01:54:30were spamming
01:54:32your JB love, but we learned
01:54:34to understand and appreciate it. Yes.
01:54:36And I apologize.
01:54:38Yeah, I apologize.
01:54:40I could be a bit of a tyrant, but go ahead.
01:54:42I don't think...
01:54:44I think that sometimes you
01:54:46get on a... I don't think you're a tyrant,
01:54:48man.
01:54:50That's fine.
01:54:52You've blocked me. You've canceled me from this show, remember?
01:54:54During my crazy COVID time?
01:54:56No.
01:54:58Guys, one of the reasons...
01:55:00I wouldn't say stoic. One of the reasons
01:55:02you're getting about 70% of this energy...
01:55:04I am in a working media room.
01:55:06I don't want to be screaming
01:55:08into the microphone right now here.
01:55:10That's why when we get to the court,
01:55:12we're going to bring big Nick
01:55:14energy to the
01:55:16broadcast, I promise.
01:55:18It's coming. So we will
01:55:20light it up. And you get Bobby's
01:55:22first take, and I do hope he got
01:55:24changed. And I do hope
01:55:26that...
01:55:28Did you play the Ray Allen?
01:55:30Did he send that over?
01:55:32What?
01:55:34John?
01:55:36Did you get the Ray Allen hit?
01:55:38I did.
01:55:40Nick, I'm being told the court is
01:55:42closed. Is that correct?
01:55:44It looks...
01:55:46Well, no. There's still people, but
01:55:48I think they're ushering people
01:55:50off now as we speak.
01:55:52Oh, that's so funny. So we got to figure out
01:55:54what and where we can go live from
01:55:56because we did want to do it.
01:55:58So we are
01:56:00figuring that out right now.
01:56:02But the court...
01:56:04The court, they are ushering people off.
01:56:06...
01:56:08For you, John.
01:56:10They know we're on our way out, so they're
01:56:12making room for us.
01:56:14I mean, it's not like a mad dash to security.
01:56:16It's just that you can see they're moving people out.
01:56:18We're being thrown off.
01:56:20They're not supposed to do that. They're supposed to be able to stay here
01:56:22literally until the end of time.
01:56:24So when will the parade be? Wednesday, probably, on Juneteenth.
01:56:26So everybody will be out of school?
01:56:28I don't believe so
01:56:30because I think there's going to be
01:56:32Juneteenth
01:56:34commemorations and
01:56:36observances that day.
01:56:38I also think the heat wave is going to make it
01:56:40prohibitive to be able to do this in the next
01:56:42couple of days. You might not get a cool down
01:56:44until Friday.
01:56:46So I wouldn't be stunned if they push it, but the problem is
01:56:48some players kind of want to go do their
01:56:50thing.
01:56:52Well, that's not been the first time, John.
01:56:54A lot of times people would skip the parade.
01:56:56Thank you, Jason.
01:56:58If they wait
01:57:00until Friday, that might be fun.
01:57:02Parade is Friday, I've been told.
01:57:04They're going to Miami
01:57:06and then they're coming back here
01:57:08for the Friday parade.
01:57:10So it is Friday.
01:57:12That means
01:57:14we've got to work Friday, John.
01:57:16Yeah, that as well.
01:57:18Hold on one second.
01:57:24I'm on solo.
01:57:26I'm the sentimental
01:57:28one now.
01:57:30It is amazing to be here after
01:57:32coming to this arena and shooting
01:57:34shows
01:57:36since
01:57:382011 or so
01:57:40to now be sitting here
01:57:42and talking about
01:57:44banner 18 for 14
01:57:46or 16 years, however long it's been.
01:57:48And now to actually know
01:57:50that it's going to get raised, and I
01:57:52swear to God I will be here opening night
01:57:54when they raise that banner
01:57:56and give out those rings.
01:57:58You know, I mean,
01:58:00John, you've been here before.
01:58:02For guys like me,
01:58:04I mean, I'm looking around and I couldn't
01:58:06believe how, they told me 400
01:58:08pounds of confetti was thrown
01:58:10out on the court.
01:58:12400 pounds
01:58:14of confetti.
01:58:16Tissue paper.
01:58:18It's
01:58:20not a Celtics related thing, but as I
01:58:22said, I've been fortunate. I've gotten to see a few of these
01:58:24over the years. One of my favorite ones
01:58:26was Super Bowl against the
01:58:28Panthers with the Patriots.
01:58:30That was their second Super Bowl win
01:58:32and I had somehow found my way out onto
01:58:34the field
01:58:36earlier than you were supposed to.
01:58:38And before they could pull all the media back,
01:58:40Rodney Harrison broke his arm and they had to cart
01:58:42him off the field and they stopped caring about us because
01:58:44they needed to get him through the tunnel. So I just
01:58:46worked my way up the sideline
01:58:48and I was just there watching Vinatieri's kick go through
01:58:50and the confetti gun
01:58:52exploded. I was right next to it. I had no idea.
01:58:54It exploded in my
01:58:56face and it was like
01:58:58pressurized and
01:59:00I just got literally blown away
01:59:02but it was crazy.
01:59:04So yeah, so Trophy
01:59:06is Friday.
01:59:08And the late night edition
01:59:10is as soon as we can get set
01:59:12up and we will set up and we promise we'll bring
01:59:14it to you in just a little bit. Super Chat
01:59:16is still rolling in. We want to thank everybody for
01:59:18coming. Dirk, I don't
01:59:20disagree. We haven't gotten into this talk much
01:59:22and we will in a second but I want
01:59:24to finish Nick's thought before
01:59:26that. Is it the beginning? And yes,
01:59:28of course everybody thinks it. What's the reason
01:59:30to believe that this is anything other than the
01:59:32start of something rather than
01:59:34well, they got one and let's just break it up
01:59:36and figure it. We're
01:59:38assuming
01:59:40that this is the
01:59:42team for two
01:59:44and three years and outside of Al Horford
01:59:46being up there in age, there's nobody here you're super
01:59:48worried about. Is he going to come back and be the same
01:59:50guy or better next year?
01:59:52Which is insane to
01:59:54think about as they are locked up
01:59:56and if they manage to get this Dirk White extension
01:59:58and yeah, they're going to be in cap jail
02:00:00and over the second apron for a little
02:00:02while but this is built to be
02:00:04a expensive
02:00:06team for the next couple
02:00:08of years. Ridiculously expensive when the
02:00:10Tatum extension kicks in. No one can bitch about WIC
02:00:12but they're going to ride it out
02:00:14and they're going to roll this back
02:00:16and there's every reason to believe
02:00:18that it could be the same or better
02:00:20going forward which is insane.
02:00:22And I also think
02:00:24there is some... They say
02:00:26this is so boomer but you guys know how
02:00:28young I was? I was 20 years younger. I was far
02:00:30from a boomer at that point
02:00:32when I got bodied by that cannon.
02:00:34You know?
02:00:36Far from a boomer. We might bring
02:00:38in, just to carry us
02:00:40while we set up on the live, we might bring in Bobby
02:00:42Manning a little bit and get his sense. I was
02:00:44hoping Bobby would be soaked by champagne
02:00:46for not taking my
02:00:48advice but he's fine. Bobby, you look
02:00:50dry. Did you not party correctly? What happened?
02:00:52Yeah, I stayed off
02:00:54to the side for the most part.
02:00:56Well, I think it was just kind of luck
02:00:58that that didn't happen because it was spraying all over
02:01:00the place. I got hit a couple times but no
02:01:02waterfalls on me so
02:01:04I do know they were looking pretty dry but there were a few
02:01:06moments where it hit me
02:01:08but man, what a scene in there. I was in there
02:01:10for about an hour. Talked to
02:01:12as many people as I could but
02:01:14man, it was just mostly music blasting,
02:01:16guys going crazy. Jordan
02:01:18Walsh especially was
02:01:20in a different world
02:01:22as a lot of them were
02:01:24but man, you could tell
02:01:26and what guys talked about
02:01:28in there for the most part
02:01:30was the collectiveness of this group.
02:01:32Obviously, we talked throughout the year
02:01:34of the Browns and Tatums and Horford
02:01:36and everyone else who were crucial to this team
02:01:38but they had a hell of a bench
02:01:40and they had guys who could step in
02:01:421 to 15
02:01:44in different roles. I think pretty much
02:01:46everybody on the active roster did something
02:01:48this year. You had a group
02:01:50here and obviously you had the main
02:01:52guys and the two-way guys and all that who didn't do
02:01:54a ton but we're talking about
02:01:5615, 16 people who
02:01:58legitimately contributed to this team. Felt like
02:02:00they contributed. Probably only like Walsh, JD
02:02:02and a couple other guys
02:02:04didn't do much for this group.
02:02:06Even Kata had a big role for that
02:02:08week or two where all the bigs were out.
02:02:10This is a team that was very
02:02:12together. A lot of talk about sacrifice
02:02:14especially the younger guys were saying that what they learned
02:02:16from this group this year was how
02:02:18important it is to sacrifice, how important it is
02:02:20to put yourself aside. That was
02:02:22really one of the
02:02:24dominating themes
02:02:26this year. Similar to 08.
02:02:28I don't know how much you've talked about that
02:02:30John but in the end I think
02:02:32we rolled our eyes a little bit at the beginning of the year
02:02:34when they were forcing a lot of that 08
02:02:36comparison talk.
02:02:38I don't know Bobby.
02:02:40I didn't roll my eyes
02:02:42much. I think I was on
02:02:44record saying that I think this team talent
02:02:46wise was really close. What
02:02:48I didn't know necessarily was the culture change
02:02:50aspect of it where
02:02:52that was a little hard to believe that
02:02:54it would change so quickly because
02:02:56you brought in
02:02:58basically two thirds of what came in
02:03:00from elsewhere of that new
02:03:02core was
02:03:04from the outside and
02:03:06the one guy KG being the alpha
02:03:08literally everybody followed his lead.
02:03:10He was such a force of nature
02:03:12that you didn't know what
02:03:14you had here. You knew you had guys who were
02:03:16willing to play their roles well.
02:03:18You didn't quite know what you were getting in
02:03:20for Zingas who while having an excellent
02:03:22season the year before in Washington you weren't sure
02:03:24the fit. You weren't sure the health.
02:03:26You weren't sure if it was a flash in the pan
02:03:28sort of thing.
02:03:30I think like night one with
02:03:32Zingas and the way that he played
02:03:34you were like oh my
02:03:36God like this
02:03:38is something. They let you know who they
02:03:40were early early
02:03:42early and you were getting it
02:03:44all year long. Again there's almost no let up.
02:03:46You look at every point in the schedule Bobby
02:03:48There's not slumps.
02:03:50There's not down patches.
02:03:52There weren't those where
02:03:54they never lost more than two games in a row.
02:03:56They never lost more than two games
02:03:58in a row. It was insane and obviously they had
02:04:00great health luck as well but also
02:04:02they had so much
02:04:04depth of top end talent
02:04:06they could play without one and
02:04:08two guys and be
02:04:10much better than the majority of teams
02:04:12who were playing particularly teams who were missing
02:04:14a player. It wasn't
02:04:16close and they did it all year long.
02:04:18In the final record
02:04:2080-21.
02:04:22They did it from legit
02:04:24day one. I think maybe the only knock was
02:04:26Bobby as you always point back to
02:04:28are they going to play defense
02:04:30the way that they need to play defense
02:04:32all year. At times
02:04:34they didn't but also how can you
02:04:36blame them?
02:04:38You're
02:04:40telling me some boredom is not going to set in
02:04:42in an 82 game season when you're just killing
02:04:44people and you end up winning the
02:04:46conference by 14-15 games.
02:04:48They did a pretty good job of
02:04:50not losing their focus here but the most
02:04:52impressive thing to me about the entire finals run
02:04:54was the defense and how committed
02:04:56they were to it because their offense was
02:04:58not outstanding
02:05:00and Dallas did make them work for some of it
02:05:02and they weren't that efficient and they
02:05:04weren't knocking down shots at a really great clip
02:05:06but their defense was
02:05:08relentless.
02:05:10It was their effort
02:05:12and Bobby
02:05:14you always said this and I do agree
02:05:16if this team defends
02:05:18they can't lose because
02:05:20there's going to be enough offense there
02:05:22they're capable of being an elite defensive
02:05:24team when they try and if they do
02:05:26that a team like Dallas is
02:05:28never going to be able to outscore them if
02:05:30the Celtics go balls to the wall and they did.
02:05:32The quote I'll remember most
02:05:34from the team this year actually came from Derek White
02:05:36they have an answer
02:05:38for everything. They just have to find it.
02:05:40They just have to get there. They have to react
02:05:42to what's going on and now I'm starting to talk
02:05:44but they
02:05:46have everything here. They had everything here
02:05:48and it's amazing to think
02:05:50you had guys going down left
02:05:52and right this year. You had
02:05:54game for two guys were out. Two key guys
02:05:56I think one of the things we said coming into the year
02:05:58John was you have a top six
02:06:00here that pretty much is going to have to do
02:06:02everything for this team and if you even lose
02:06:04one guy you're going to be in
02:06:06huge trouble. You lost one
02:06:08guy for basically the whole playoffs in
02:06:10Porzingis and got by and that
02:06:12was an area where you were a little more suited
02:06:14you had backup starter effectively
02:06:16there in Horford who was able to
02:06:18come in and do his thing and play at
02:06:20the level he did and
02:06:22that helped you a ton here and
02:06:24for him to sustain because he was
02:06:26ready in twenty twenty two.
02:06:28He was ready last year. He's been ready for a long
02:06:30time to do this and the team
02:06:32finally came around him and
02:06:34allowed him to have his moment here
02:06:36You start to worry a little bit that
02:06:38after twenty twenty two and last year
02:06:40when it fell to shambles in
02:06:42the east finals and you were uncertain about where
02:06:44the score was going that Horford would never get that
02:06:46one and that's honestly what feels
02:06:48the best for me out of this is seeing him do
02:06:50that so he was ginormous
02:06:52again Hauser
02:06:54I didn't
02:06:56think he was going to play a minute in the finals
02:06:58John and he's out here hitting threes
02:07:00in the clincher. He was all over
02:07:02the series. His defense
02:07:04the amount of deflections he got
02:07:06tap outs
02:07:08he was active tonight. He was awesome
02:07:10tonight. He was clearly like a huge part
02:07:12of the rotation. He was a huge part
02:07:14of the team all year. Played
02:07:16every day. Shot out of this world
02:07:18I've seen
02:07:20national evaluators and people
02:07:22who cover the sport nationally
02:07:24start to say
02:07:26this guy, the numbers he's put
02:07:28up and I don't have the playoff ones right in front of me
02:07:30but all year and what he's done going back to college
02:07:32and so far in his NBA career
02:07:34so far one of the best shooters
02:07:36ever and he's had
02:07:38his slumps and certainly in the indie series
02:07:40he was an absolute mess and that's what made me
02:07:42think he was going to fall out of the rotation here
02:07:44but another guy, death flies on this team
02:07:46who knew his role, fit a role
02:07:48and sustained
02:07:50the
02:07:52sustained success of this bench this year
02:07:54was really impressive and how everybody knew
02:07:56their roles and starters
02:07:58key guys knew their roles too. That's what it takes
02:08:00to win a championship and it felt like everybody
02:08:02on this roster knew their role
02:08:04and that brings me to Jalen
02:08:08It's so crazy John
02:08:10because we were sitting there in November
02:08:12saying how is he going to fit in
02:08:14where is he going to fit in on this team
02:08:16Well who took the
02:08:18longest to figure it out? It was him right?
02:08:20Yeah and in the end
02:08:22In the beginning and it didn't take that
02:08:24long but it did take the longest
02:08:26of those guys to figure out
02:08:28exactly where he fit but then
02:08:30then from
02:08:32whatever the turning point was
02:08:34he was playing the best basketball
02:08:36of his career once he kind of locked it in
02:08:38and so much of it came down to
02:08:40not forcing
02:08:42anything whereas
02:08:44that was always maybe the
02:08:46thing you could be most critical about
02:08:48in his game was
02:08:50forcing the issue
02:08:52dribbling with his head down into traffic
02:08:54taking shots when they weren't necessarily
02:08:56there doing things outside of the flow
02:08:58he didn't make
02:09:00bad decisions this year
02:09:02his reads were outstanding he just stopped doing
02:09:04all of the things that
02:09:06you know
02:09:08that had held him back before from
02:09:10kind of reaching that next elite level
02:09:12his stats came down a tad but he was
02:09:14just such a much much better player
02:09:16and then the commitment on the defensive end as well
02:09:18he was ridiculous this year
02:09:20the last two thirds of the season
02:09:22you can argue he was their best player
02:09:24and the defense
02:09:26if we're going to write a book about
02:09:28this season or a documentary
02:09:30or whatever it will be
02:09:32the first moment
02:09:34to me the moment that started this whole season
02:09:36was that event where he signed the extension
02:09:38the MIT
02:09:40event that he does every year
02:09:42the program for the kids and
02:09:44one of the biggest things he
02:09:46said that day toward
02:09:48the next season that was about to come
02:09:50was defense
02:09:52get the defensive identity back
02:09:54he wanted to recommit to defense
02:09:56and he didn't make
02:09:58the all defensive team like he wanted to
02:10:00he and Tatum both said that
02:10:02going into the year that they wanted to be on those all defense
02:10:04teams
02:10:06but they both reached a level
02:10:08that they were
02:10:10capable of those guys have all
02:10:12the defensive tools in the world and it was so frustrating
02:10:14John I know you were just talking a lot about the offensive
02:10:16frustration you had watching Brown in the past
02:10:18you were probably about as frustrated as
02:10:20anyone watching him some of these past
02:10:22seasons but nothing drove
02:10:24me us crazier than
02:10:26watching a guy who's 6'5
02:10:286'6 great length
02:10:30strong started his career as a defender
02:10:32just get lost and
02:10:34give up
02:10:36against Philly
02:10:38oh my god that
02:10:40still haunts me but leaving Harden
02:10:42in the corner but that's always
02:10:44been the knock on him though it was
02:10:46outstanding lockdown
02:10:48individual defender when he's
02:10:50focused on it but not necessarily a good team defender
02:10:52he cleaned up that stuff a lot too
02:10:54they really were connected
02:10:56he didn't see him drifting
02:10:58there was always problems sometimes
02:11:00with over helping
02:11:02getting lost sometimes on screens or switches
02:11:04miscommunications
02:11:06where people would be looking at each other and often times
02:11:08it was kind of like yeah that was you
02:11:10that didn't happen this year not nearly
02:11:12as well so you clean that aspect
02:11:14of it up and then you are
02:11:16this athletic beast like he is
02:11:18who can keep anybody in front of him
02:11:20I mean that's as
02:11:22much one of the most fun things
02:11:24of this entire series was just watching him
02:11:26relentlessly pound
02:11:28Luca up and down the court it was
02:11:30great it was great
02:11:32to watch yeah
02:11:34and that keyed many
02:11:36of these series many of these matchups allowing
02:11:38him to embrace that one matchup
02:11:40play to his strength
02:11:42and benefit from
02:11:44his commitment to that
02:11:46matchup and they switch
02:11:48and they do different schemes and stuff but
02:11:50a lot of the time it was him on a Luca
02:11:52him on a Donovan Mitchell
02:11:54him on all these different
02:11:56star wings that the Celtics went against
02:11:58during this run
02:12:00they benefited from that immensely and that's where
02:12:02you go back to Joe here
02:12:04all the doubts
02:12:06about him all the criticism about him
02:12:10valid last year right
02:12:12he struggled at moments
02:12:14it felt like he
02:12:16had a tough time
02:12:18figuring out what this team was going
02:12:20to be how he would make his imprint
02:12:22on it how he'd get the team to believe in him
02:12:24because for a lot of last year
02:12:26you know I don't have reporting on this
02:12:28but there seemed to be doubts in him
02:12:30in different points and it obviously reached
02:12:32ahead in that east finals and
02:12:34we've talked about John how if they get swept there
02:12:36probably wouldn't
02:12:38have been great for him and
02:12:40he admitted it
02:12:42he on that podcast
02:12:44going into the year was like
02:12:46think about how we were
02:12:48obsessed with the one seed all year everyone was
02:12:50obsessed with the one seed he even looked at
02:12:52me and said you were asking how to feel to
02:12:54lose that one seed you regret
02:12:56that and he
02:12:58pointed out if we won
02:13:00that one seed we would have played the heat
02:13:02round one and we would have
02:13:04lost probably and I would have been fired
02:13:06and so
02:13:08they play them in these finals and they lose but
02:13:10they make that comeback that
02:13:12they did there and a lot of it felt too little too
02:13:14late they obviously
02:13:16blew up the team or parts of the team after
02:13:18that but
02:13:20it showed something there
02:13:22and I think it gained him
02:13:24some breathing room
02:13:26he obviously got the extension
02:13:28there which was important too
02:13:30but this year and obviously I'm
02:13:32sure some of the assistance helped and
02:13:34he had a different team maybe a more bought
02:13:36in team a full summer certainly
02:13:38all that stuff
02:13:40I sat here last May
02:13:42late last day and
02:13:44we asked the question should you fire Joe
02:13:46and I
02:13:48leaned yes I leaned
02:13:50yes but I said
02:13:52if they believe in him
02:13:54if they think he has enormous potential
02:13:56all
02:13:58the excuses are valid
02:14:00no summer thrust in late
02:14:02September assistants who are about
02:14:04to bolt out the door at the end of the year
02:14:06a team that maybe wasn't
02:14:08100% 1000% bought in
02:14:10all that was valid
02:14:12I don't think anyone had more excuses
02:14:14coaching wise and
02:14:16league history than Joe last
02:14:18year so their commitment
02:14:20to him I thought was
02:14:22valid I didn't love it
02:14:24I had my doubts about
02:14:26him I had my doubts about some
02:14:28of the philosophies John but you look at what it did
02:14:30the threes
02:14:32for all the complaining about the threes
02:14:34their
02:14:36ability to get a shot off quick
02:14:38the first open shot
02:14:40get a quality look off
02:14:42each time down the floor
02:14:44that took a team that in the finals two years
02:14:46ago turned the ball over on 16 17
02:14:48percent of their possessions
02:14:50to a team that led the league in turnover
02:14:52percentage this year best turnover percentage
02:14:54in the league and they never gave away the ball
02:14:56this year and that's a lot
02:14:58a lot on Joe
02:15:00Joe emphasized the offensive rebounding
02:15:02how many times was drew in there tonight
02:15:04just grabbing an offensive board
02:15:06giving them more time giving them another opportunity
02:15:08what became clear is the
02:15:10yeah what became clear as the season
02:15:12went on Bobby was you know
02:15:14I think there was some perception of
02:15:16Joe doing anything or just letting them play
02:15:18to how much of his identity
02:15:20and character that the team
02:15:22did take on you know
02:15:24he relentlessly hammered
02:15:26home the concept of
02:15:28winning the math games
02:15:30and some people thought it was ridiculous
02:15:32how many arguments were had and how many
02:15:34back and forth on games where they would
02:15:36shoot too many threes and not hit them and then
02:15:38questions asked about too many threes
02:15:40look definitively
02:15:42resoundingly
02:15:44Joe was right about the math
02:15:46he was right about all
02:15:48of it the math in terms
02:15:50of Celtics getting up more threes
02:15:52and why that was important
02:15:54and the
02:15:56shots that they were willing to
02:15:58concede to other teams the way
02:16:00they wanted to play defense it wasn't all about
02:16:02why is that guy open
02:16:04it was I'm willing to live with that
02:16:06and that was hard for a lot of people to see
02:16:08because your instinct is just guard the
02:16:10open shooter you know and
02:16:12you see like that game against Miami
02:16:14where they lose game two that was a great example
02:16:16of it and they're like yeah whatever
02:16:18it's fine you know like they weren't
02:16:20super worried about it
02:16:22Joe had a plan you know Joe
02:16:24had a plan and a vision for how
02:16:26he thought this team
02:16:28could and would win and
02:16:30by the end you could see how
02:16:32bought in all of them were and the way that they
02:16:34were talking about him when being asked
02:16:36about it there's a lot of I think
02:16:38you know that
02:16:40year one you never know right because the coach
02:16:42does more than just X's and O's
02:16:44the coach has to kind of come in the room and you got
02:16:46to feel that he always is on top of things
02:16:48and you don't know what you don't know and Joe took lumps
02:16:50and that's hard to do as a rookie coach with a veteran
02:16:52team that has championship
02:16:54aspirations
02:16:56by year two he cleaned up so much of that
02:16:58that there was clear clear clear
02:17:00buy in from all of these guys
02:17:02and you can really see it in both
02:17:04how the way they talked about him and the way that they played
02:17:06they really respect this guy
02:17:08yeah I see some people in the chat
02:17:10also asking about the parade
02:17:12Gary Washburn tweeting
02:17:14out that Celtics are going to go to Miami
02:17:16for a couple days and the parade will be
02:17:18here
02:17:20we will do something from the parade
02:17:22it is not
02:17:24this is the link to our late night show guys
02:17:26as soon as those guys are set up we're shutting this down
02:17:28we're going to run into position we're going to jump on
02:17:30so you can see the whole crew together in one spot
02:17:32and do that so again
02:17:34link to the late night show
02:17:36jump up there you guys
02:17:38and make sure that you check it out
02:17:40because we are going to
02:17:42kind of bring the whole gang together here
02:17:44yeah
02:17:46Friday I think a lot of people
02:17:48were guessing the heat is one of the issues
02:17:50here
02:17:52yeah that's probably
02:17:54a good idea I think it's hitting 90s
02:17:56I know you guys probably talked about it for an hour
02:17:58John how surprised
02:18:00were you when Jalen won the MVP
02:18:02I didn't talk
02:18:04about it at all because I don't care
02:18:06much about MVPs
02:18:08it was 7-4
02:18:10I thought Tatum locked it up tonight
02:18:12I thought he did
02:18:14but again when you put up the numbers
02:18:16if you want to go side by side with them
02:18:18and you want to talk about it a little bit
02:18:20Tatum
02:18:22and I'll throw him up here real quick
02:18:26that was his numbers tonight
02:18:28but if you look at his series numbers here
02:18:30it's that 38% field goal
02:18:32percentage that I think killed him
02:18:34in 26 from 3
02:18:36he just didn't shoot well enough
02:18:38to justify winning in some people's eyes
02:18:40even though he did do so many other things
02:18:42and I think Brown ultimately gets the nod
02:18:44for
02:18:46shooting the ball a little bit
02:18:48better even though from 3 he was brutal
02:18:50again tonight
02:18:52he did well as far as his assists
02:18:54and his rebounds go relative to his stats
02:18:56but I think he gets the nod simply for
02:18:58drawing the assignment of having to
02:19:00defend full court
02:19:02for an entire game and obviously
02:19:04there's switches and this and that
02:19:06but the best offensive player in basketball
02:19:08I think that's what tips it for him
02:19:10yeah
02:19:12and I'm sure I haven't heard some of the arguments
02:19:14from the voters again I would have voted Tatum
02:19:16I understand
02:19:18I thought he got it
02:19:20especially from a numbers standpoint
02:19:22scoring wise, efficiency wise
02:19:24Brown a little better than Tatum here
02:19:26so I get it
02:19:28and the defensive role he played
02:19:30in this series warrants
02:19:32a nod
02:19:34and Tatum struggled
02:19:36early and someone had to pick him up
02:19:38and if you think about how the series went
02:19:40the early games end up meaning a little bit more than
02:19:42some of the later ones because you have the cushion there
02:19:44when Tatum starts to turn it on
02:19:46again though
02:19:48the passing
02:19:50even tonight
02:19:52out of this world
02:19:54you never imagined it'd be this consistent
02:19:56this effective
02:19:58this
02:20:00clean, no turnovers
02:20:02for most of the series
02:20:04he avoided those
02:20:06he's dealing with that crowd of 2-3 guys
02:20:08early and often here
02:20:10and he manages to just keep making
02:20:12the right play
02:20:14I know we've dealt with that
02:20:16that argument for him all year
02:20:18even when he shot at his worst
02:20:20but it became true
02:20:22I thought it became the story of this series early and often
02:20:24I don't think he was robbed
02:20:26I don't think it's a huge snub
02:20:28either one of these guys could have gotten it
02:20:30and they both certainly got plenty of help around them
02:20:32but I guess the biggest argument
02:20:34is that he was a tone setter
02:20:36even vocally
02:20:38the encouragement you heard him give
02:20:40throughout the playoffs
02:20:42the talk in the huddles
02:20:44after losses
02:20:46some of the statements he would make
02:20:48even after games where he just didn't feel like they generally played well
02:20:50emotion-wise
02:20:52not on the court
02:20:54he ended up becoming this team's KG
02:20:56which I was surprised about
02:20:58he's a quieter guy
02:21:00these guys didn't always embrace leadership
02:21:02vocal leadership
02:21:04but when smart went out the door
02:21:06one of the biggest arguments you heard for that
02:21:08was these guys
02:21:10Jalen, Jason need to step up
02:21:12and I'm sure Jason did some things too
02:21:14in that regard
02:21:16but Jalen's the guy you saw
02:21:18Jalen's the guy you heard
02:21:20and he seemed to set a tone for this team
02:21:22from a vocal standpoint
02:21:24he did
02:21:26because if you think about it
02:21:28you look at all of the other leaders on the team
02:21:30you have Tatum
02:21:32who's never really embraced that role
02:21:34that's not his style
02:21:36and then everybody else is a quiet professional
02:21:38with Holiday
02:21:40and White and Horford
02:21:42and a lot of people would always look at Al like
02:21:44why isn't Al going in there
02:21:46it's not his thing, he's a lead by example guy
02:21:48but you had three of those guys, somebody had to
02:21:50it wasn't going to be Porzingis either
02:21:52so it really kind of had to
02:21:54by default be Brown
02:21:56and I do think he was that guy
02:21:58he became the energy guy
02:22:00and I think Tatum was fine to let him have it
02:22:02I don't think he was like
02:22:04they co-existed
02:22:06at times they enhanced each other
02:22:08I think of the game three, the third quarter
02:22:10some of the best passing between them I've ever seen
02:22:12I think they had seven assists to each other
02:22:14in that game combined
02:22:16there's a high number for them
02:22:18which is very high
02:22:20that's their season average
02:22:22that's their collective season average
02:22:24to average it to each other is pretty significant
02:22:26yeah
02:22:28so
02:22:30they found their spots on the floor
02:22:32for Tatum a lot of times it was at the top
02:22:34on the ball
02:22:36initiating things
02:22:38and for Brown many times
02:22:40he got close to the basket
02:22:42with the ball in his hands off a pass
02:22:44and finished
02:22:46and that dynamic worked
02:22:48they found their spots
02:22:50the match up often went in Brown's favor
02:22:52he would find the Kyries of the world
02:22:54and again to go back to some of the
02:22:56identifiable traits of this team
02:22:58what made them who they are
02:23:00they never let anybody off the hook
02:23:02and who knows how they would have done against the Denver here
02:23:04obviously all of us were scared of that
02:23:06to some degree
02:23:08Minnesota physically especially with the new officiating
02:23:10would have been tough
02:23:12but Dallas
02:23:14not just that they were a 5 seed
02:23:16and maybe not the strongest team in the west
02:23:18but it was a team
02:23:20that they could exhibit their mismatch
02:23:22hunting to the highest degree
02:23:24against and that's what allowed them to
02:23:26win this series in 5
02:23:28it made their offense so potent
02:23:30at different points here in this series
02:23:32they could just work Luka
02:23:34tire him out, take him out of the game
02:23:36Kyrie that was always there as a target
02:23:38so that was great
02:23:40we talked a lot about the defense up the top
02:23:42in this series and that was key for when things went cold
02:23:44obviously they had that 8 point
02:23:46stretch tonight for 11 minutes John
02:23:48and they held them up to 8 points over that stretch
02:23:50so their ability to
02:23:52sustain some of these droughts
02:23:54some of these lapses offensively
02:23:56they're always going to be there to some degree with this group
02:23:58that was huge
02:24:00so
02:24:02that's big and
02:24:04then you go to Chris Stapps
02:24:08I couldn't believe he got out there
02:24:10tonight John
02:24:12the chat's been dying to hear your Chris Stapps take
02:24:16I understand it now
02:24:20I understand
02:24:22the lift he gave them
02:24:24just by getting out there
02:24:26he didn't do a ton tonight
02:24:28but when he entered the game
02:24:30the energy it gave the crowd
02:24:32the energy it gave the team
02:24:34him able to get that mismatch against Green
02:24:36not really move much
02:24:38at different points his movement here
02:24:40didn't look good and that defensive stretch
02:24:42to start his first stint
02:24:44was not good at all
02:24:46and the Mavs were ready for it
02:24:48and it almost looked like something that could have
02:24:50disrupted them and I said coming into the night
02:24:52John, if it went the wrong way in that
02:24:54first stint, that could have deflated
02:24:56the team, that could have made him incapable
02:24:58of continuing the play
02:25:00that could have thrown the whole night for a loop but he comes out
02:25:02in that second stint and does much better
02:25:04that play where Luka tried to
02:25:06target him in the corner and couldn't get
02:25:08by him, threw it out, got it back
02:25:10couldn't get by him again, just ends up settling
02:25:12for a 3 over him, that was a huge
02:25:14moment for Chris Stapps in this one
02:25:16I also like when Jones
02:25:18tossed him to the ground, he snapped right back up
02:25:20yeah, and so who knows
02:25:22what this summer is going to hold for him
02:25:24did he say anything? You guys were listening
02:25:26in a little bit I bet, I wasn't in on him
02:25:28I'm sure he's going to have to have surgery
02:25:30who knows what's
02:25:32going to happen with the Olympics for him which kind of sucks
02:25:34but this is the finals, this is your championship
02:25:36moment and he got out there and did whatever
02:25:38he could, obviously he was in the podium here
02:25:40with the trophy after saying
02:25:42how could he not get out there
02:25:44the talk leading up to this game after the injury
02:25:46obviously was that he was willing to die out there
02:25:48that was my question
02:25:50I asked him in the locker room there
02:25:52and as long as the medical
02:25:54staff allowed him
02:25:56he was going to get out there
02:25:58it was a positive tonight, a ginormous
02:26:00positive, an energy lifter
02:26:02I don't know if they would have been able
02:26:04to do it without him
02:26:06no, and again
02:26:08it was all of those things
02:26:10they probably could I guess, but it does
02:26:12change the tone for a lot of different things
02:26:14because as we said before the show
02:26:16it almost did act like a decoy
02:26:18where you do put them out there and you force their bigs to extend
02:26:20you force them to defend out
02:26:22past the three point line
02:26:24and so that clears things up in the paint
02:26:26you got him one good
02:26:28one or two good touches in the post
02:26:30where he was able to capitalize there and shoot over the top
02:26:32of somebody, but then defensively
02:26:34he did challenge a couple of shots
02:26:36he wasn't moving
02:26:38in space great
02:26:40you don't want Chris Epps' face
02:26:42against this team or really anybody anyway
02:26:44they did a really good job protecting him
02:26:46letting him play drop, doing the thing
02:26:48they did in game two there
02:26:50where they would extend out, push out the defender
02:26:52let Porzingis jump back before they could get the ball
02:26:54back into the interior or to a
02:26:56lob to one of their big guys
02:26:58and did a good job closing those out
02:27:00and he was there to kind of
02:27:02just be that
02:27:04little bit of rim presence that they needed
02:27:06that didn't exist before
02:27:08when he's out
02:27:10and really doesn't exist if he's not
02:27:12able to provide it
02:27:14they don't have another guy who does that for them
02:27:16so he didn't end up with any blocks
02:27:18but he did have a couple of challenges
02:27:20and I thought all of that stuff mattered
02:27:22and again he did exactly what we said
02:27:24Bobby, we're looking at what
02:27:26three, four minute stints, just get out there
02:27:28and that's what he did
02:27:30and I think it's better than the 11, 12, 13 minutes
02:27:32he would have gotten from Tillman
02:27:34in place there
02:27:36because it's not just what he did
02:27:38it's what it allows the rest of the team to do
02:27:40the only worry was
02:27:42kind of what happened in that first stint
02:27:44which is, what if it's awful
02:27:46and it wasn't
02:27:48awful, but it wasn't great
02:27:50because they got like five
02:27:52open threes in the first three minutes
02:27:54he was on the court, and if they knocked
02:27:56those down, that could have been
02:27:58so there was some moments
02:28:00there where you're like, oh
02:28:02I am very happy with how
02:28:04he looked in that second
02:28:06rotation
02:28:08when he got back in there
02:28:10much, much, much better, and you do wonder
02:28:12maybe he just needed to test it a little bit
02:28:14I think the Celtics helped him out much
02:28:16in that first quarter either, with the switching
02:28:18he was like, wait
02:28:20where did you go and where am I supposed to be now
02:28:22the Celtics
02:28:24didn't do him any favours
02:28:26Yeah
02:28:28and they did some good things statically
02:28:30you even saw it through that first sequence
02:28:32where they were getting the threes off of him
02:28:34they would try to bring him into actions
02:28:36and he would switch off a guy to his
02:28:38side, and that guy, Derek White
02:28:40in the first case where I saw it
02:28:42would switch onto the guy who was trying to screen
02:28:44off the ball handler
02:28:46so Poizetas could stay back
02:28:48and that guy would end up coming
02:28:50and switching, which was
02:28:52White at that point, and it was clunky
02:28:54that's what allowed some of the miscommunications
02:28:56in threes that they got off there
02:28:58Green got back to back ones, Exum got one
02:29:00off over him
02:29:02but
02:29:04it was good scheming, it was good
02:29:06execution in a lot of cases
02:29:08and this is what I loved about this
02:29:10team, they had some zones they could go to
02:29:12they had some different ways they could
02:29:14align defensively, they could switch
02:29:16matchups, so they could have different guys
02:29:18defending the screener and switching onto the
02:29:20ball handler, Tatum
02:29:22for a lot of the series would guard the centre
02:29:24so he'd be able to come out and pop onto Luka or Kyrie
02:29:26it's just a versatility
02:29:28yeah, that's something he's not getting
02:29:30enough credit for, he had to bang with Gafford
02:29:32a lot down low, that wasn't awesome
02:29:34most
02:29:36stars don't do that
02:29:38they don't do that
02:29:40and that's where the conversation becomes
02:29:42that's where the conversation becomes difficult now
02:29:44and listen, he's a
02:29:46champion, so he's there with
02:29:48Jokic, he's there with Giannis
02:29:50among those guys at the top of the league who have
02:29:52led their team, but the way
02:29:54he did it didn't look like those guys
02:29:56he didn't carry the ball for 40%
02:29:58of the game like Luka did
02:30:00he didn't score all the points
02:30:02he didn't carry the team
02:30:04single-handedly on the offensive end
02:30:06like a lot of those stars do at the top of the league
02:30:08but we kept asking
02:30:10throughout this playoff run, John, who is Tatum?
02:30:12what does he do?
02:30:14Joe summed it up well a lot of the times
02:30:16where he'd get these questions and talk about them
02:30:18his versatility is
02:30:20what makes him great
02:30:22I think you could argue
02:30:24there's never been a more
02:30:26versatile
02:30:28wing who touches every area
02:30:30of the game like he does
02:30:32quite like he does, because
02:30:34he can shoot, maybe he's not elite as a shooter
02:30:36certainly he went through these
02:30:38crazy slings with it this year, but he's a threat
02:30:40out there
02:30:46his shot got funky
02:30:48somebody tweeted
02:30:50his jump shot looks like an elephant
02:30:52unfurling its trunk
02:30:54and it is, it became weird
02:30:56kind of groovy with him
02:30:58he's got to get back to it a little bit
02:31:00and get a quick snap release
02:31:02something was a little bit off with that
02:31:04I think it became a little bit deliberate and long
02:31:06and I don't know if that's because
02:31:08it wasn't flowing through him
02:31:10and he was maybe trying to
02:31:12take a little bit more
02:31:14I'm not a shot doctor
02:31:16but it didn't look a lot
02:31:18it became his weakness
02:31:20it became his weakness
02:31:22but everywhere else
02:31:24A efforts, the passing, the ball control
02:31:26the defense, the rebounding
02:31:28the positional versatility
02:31:30that he could play for this team
02:31:32they put him at the 5 again tonight, didn't go great
02:31:34but he's capable of that
02:31:36and that isn't something
02:31:38like you said other stars do
02:31:40in this league
02:31:42I just try to put it one way
02:31:44there's certainly been more versatile stars
02:31:46than him that have played this game
02:31:48but I think in the league today
02:31:50there's not a star more versatile
02:31:52than him, is that fair to say?
02:31:54Um
02:31:56you know
02:31:58Giannis can't shoot
02:32:00I would say SGA is pretty versatile
02:32:02too and his ability to defend as well
02:32:04in what he's able to do
02:32:06I don't know if he can defend up though
02:32:08you know, no he can't
02:32:10Jimmy Butler's another guy but he's not as prolific
02:32:12a scorer
02:32:14there either
02:32:16he's not a terrific shooter
02:32:18prime Kawhi for sure but again
02:32:20he's not
02:32:22entirely himself right now
02:32:24Durant I think is really close too
02:32:26because he defends a lot better than people
02:32:28give him credit for and he also is
02:32:30a pretty good playmaker and he's got that
02:32:32midi game that just makes
02:32:34him such an elite 3 level scorer
02:32:36that he's someone who
02:32:38probably doesn't get credit enough for all
02:32:40that he does but he's also getting up there
02:32:42in age and he's not going to, you're not putting Durant
02:32:44on centers or
02:32:46your best guy and this and that
02:32:48once again I'm putting this up here
02:32:50we're doing as promised here

02:34:24phenomenal
