00:00Adding solar panel is a fantastic way in creating an eco-friendly building as it harness renewable
00:13energy from the sun and help reduce carbon footprints. But we're not here to talk about
00:18just any other buildings. We're going to talk about how we could maximize these solar panels
00:23in transforming mosque into not just a building but an eco-friendly one or as we call it Ecomosque.
00:30The Istiklal Mosque, the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia, has set an example by
00:40undergoing major renovations in early 2021 to become an environmentally friendly place of worship.
00:50The mosque, located at the center of Jakarta, is now classified as a green building due to
00:56its efficient use of electrical and water energy resulting in reduced carbon emissions of 476.22
01:04tons per year. The International Finance Corporation, which is the institution stands
01:10under the World Bank, has awarded Istiklal as the first place of worship worldwide for
01:16its design excellence in achieving greater efficiency in April 2022. Last year, the mosque
01:23also accounted by World Bank as the first place of worship to win a green accolade.
01:31The Ecomosque promotes sustainability by integrating 504 solar panels on its
01:37rooftop, saving up to 125 million rupiahs in electricity bills monthly.
01:43Not only beautiful mosques but also green mosques also. You can imagine we save energy here
01:5438 percent. We use a solar system but interestingly because the solar system we find from the Jama'at,
02:01from the Muslim society, a follower of Istiklal Mosque.
02:07Istiklal also manages water waste effectively,
02:16reducing consumption by 36 percent monthly and recycling water used for ablution.
02:23We save also the water. You can imagine we use water here in Istiklal Mosque
02:2975 million liters each month but there is no water lost into the river but we recycle
02:41all the water we use here. We recycle in a special water process here and can directly drink.
02:49According to the health, the water in Istiklal is very, very, very good and really, really clean.
02:59Istiklal's energy-efficient design including ventilation,
03:07flooring, high ceilings and large openings all ensures thermal comfort.
03:20So I am here at the second floor and as you can see some of the women here they are chilling
03:25after a prayer and we are enjoying the ambience and the cooling breeze inside the Istiklal Mosque.
03:32So you can see there is no air con or fan here at the second floor but the airflow here is really
03:39good and I think it's due to the architectural design that helps to preserve the temperature
03:45inside the mosque naturally without the help of intensive cooling system or heating system
03:52inside the Eko Mosque.
03:58Istiklal also collaborates with local and international communities to advocate for
04:02sustainable living such as encouraging the use of refillable water bottles
04:07as a mosque provides tap water with a filtering system that is ready to drink.
04:14Indonesia's Green Mosque Initiative led by the Indonesian Ulama Council or MUI
04:20and Indonesian Mosque Council or DME has in over 200 mosques joined the program
04:26supporting the goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2060 to 2080.
