00:00 Speaking on the second day of the World Economic Forum special meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia,
00:09 Aspen Bart Eid said that the world now living in the time of deep crisis of the credibility
00:15 of the institutions.
00:17 I think that we are now living in the time of a deep crisis of the credibility of the
00:23 institutions that we have.
00:24 And I think this has been exacerbated by the crisis in Gaza and by the inability by many
00:31 Western countries, I would argue not Norway, but many of our colleagues who have hesitated
00:37 to use the same type of language against the violations of international humanitarian law,
00:42 for instance, that we easily apply when they are violated by Russia in Ukraine.
00:49 He highlighted the inability by many Western countries who hesitated to use the same type
00:54 of language against violations of international humanitarian law, for instance, that the West
01:02 easily apply when they are violated by Russia in Ukraine.
01:07 When it comes to Gaza, we have not been able to see the same type of response against,
01:14 it is a different case because of course it was the initial, the first act was the Hamas
01:19 attack on Israel, but the way Israel has conducted the war has also been very problematic in
01:25 light of global norms.
01:26 And if we don't call out that, it comes back and haunts even the argument on Ukraine.
01:32 Meanwhile Ethiopian Minister of Finance Ahmed Shein Mohamed underlined that the Syrian situation
01:38 in Gaza is dire.
01:41 The crisis in Gaza is very unique, it is catastrophic.
01:47 We believe it has to end, the humanitarian situation is dire, the world has to stand
01:51 to that, and durable peace has to prevail.
01:55 And the region is such a very important region for the global solidarity, for global peace,
01:59 for global cooperation.
02:01 So we as humanity with our collective global institutions should be able to address these
02:09 challenges which is very, very affecting a lot of communities, societies and also further
02:20 challenging the emerging new optimism in the Middle East in terms of bridging divides between
02:26 conflicting parties.
02:29 More than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed, hundreds of thousands more are displaced,
02:35 and a humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worsening.
