00:10 What's going on everyone?
00:12 Welcome back into Patriots Draft Central here on CLNS Media.
00:17 I'm Mike Catholic, he's Taylor Kiles.
00:19 And as much as excited as you can get with a sixth round pick,
00:25 the Patriots just made it possible with the selection of Tennessee quarterback,
00:29 Joe Milton.
00:30 We're gonna get into it all in a second.
00:31 But first, we are powered by PrizePix,
00:33 the exclusive daily fantasy partner of the CLNS Media Network.
00:37 Make sure to go download the app today, and you can use code CLNS for
00:41 a first deposit match of up to $100.
00:44 That's code CLNS for up to $100.
00:47 So Taylor, Patriots become the fifth team in NFL history
00:52 to select two quarterbacks in the same draft class.
00:57 And we reacted to it on our live show, but I wanna get your just quick hit thoughts,
01:04 off the bat, also after just speaking with Joe Milton over video conference.
01:08 What to make of the fact that the Patriots now have two rookie signal callers in
01:12 Drake May and Joe Milton in the building?
01:14 >> Yeah, well, this was something that I thought it was kind of far off cuz they
01:18 had so many positions of need.
01:19 But at the same time, Jacoby Brissett, Bailey Zappi, and
01:23 Nathan Rourke are all free agents in 2025.
01:26 They did need some kind of long term plan.
01:28 I figured maybe they just go with sign another veteran next year.
01:31 If Jacoby doesn't wanna come back,
01:33 then maybe bring in a camp body and then draft a free agency.
01:35 But I did actually ask Robert Griffin III just in case what it was like to be part
01:39 of a double dip just in case the Patriots,
01:42 I don't think they hedged their bet necessarily.
01:44 But this was a guy who has so much upside and so much talent,
01:48 quality character guy.
01:49 So it was surprising, but it also made sense.
01:52 We found out that he has no intention of transitioning to tight end as some people
01:56 reported.
01:56 So this is a legit quarterback five.
01:59 I had to add a fifth column to my roster breakdown.
02:02 He's the only player on the team.
02:04 But it was definitely interesting and our buddy Alex Barth was probably over
02:09 the moon.
02:09 He literally predicted it this morning actually.
02:11 He said that this is the day that Joe Milt was gonna get drafted.
02:14 So it was pretty funny.
02:15 >> Yeah, he got it right.
02:16 So an interesting pick to say the least, excuse me, right?
02:21 Rocket arm, very inconsistent obviously as a passer.
02:25 But when he's on, he can certainly be on.
02:27 Although when he's off, he's off.
02:28 Alex's funny thing is if you ask Joe Milton to throw it 80 yards,
02:31 he's gonna throw it 80 yards.
02:32 If you ask him to throw five, he's still gonna throw it 80 yards.
02:35 So that's kind of what the Patriots are getting here.
02:38 But again, if and when they do, I know he said he wasn't gonna turn into a tight end.
02:43 But sometimes if that's the only route and you're in the NFL,
02:46 you end up kind of taking that course.
02:47 And so if they can make it happen, if they can use them as a weapon,
02:51 as Elliot Wolfe's new favorite word is weapon.
02:54 Joe Milton can be that, you could use him in packages.
02:56 He can be your Hail Mary guy, he can be your QB sneak guy.
02:59 The more I think about it, there could be a spot on this roster for him.
03:02 And earlier on the live stream, Taylor, when I said that I don't see how he gets
03:07 on the roster because of Bailey Zappi in front of him.
03:09 It is worth noting, like you said, just that Zappi's in a contract here,
03:14 Jacoby's in a contract here, and
03:16 Rourke is obviously in a contract here as the exclusive rights free agent that he was.
03:19 And so this could be a developmental backup plan.
03:23 And at that point, I pick 193, if you can get a career backup who you think you can
03:27 trust to at least handle some duties if your first guy goes down,
03:31 then that's worth it for me.
03:33 So Patriots bring in Tennessee's Joe Milton at pick 193.
03:37 Grade it for me, Taylor.
03:40 What do you think?
03:40 Where do you way too early grade this selection of a sigma color for the Patriots?
03:45 >> This one is so weird to me.
03:47 I'm working on my way too early grades for the website right now.
03:53 And right before I got here, I was sitting there,
03:54 I was like, I don't know really what to give this.
03:58 It's not like it's a bad pick.
03:59 They did, it was technically a position of need in terms of a long term plan.
04:03 It is also on brand for the Packers to kind of do that double dip.
04:06 We know they like competition at every position that gives them that.
04:10 Kind of stalling here.
04:11 Call it a C plus.
04:15 It's not like Joe is talented, but
04:17 he's not someone who I think could legitimately come into the game.
04:19 Now, he has running ability.
04:21 He's a tough dude.
04:23 He's got a deep arm, but his accuracy and touch aren't great.
04:28 So it's kind of like, yeah, you have it, but
04:30 you don't really know how to maximize it.
04:32 But I did see some positive flashes when I watched him against Alabama, but
04:36 he has some very serious flaws.
04:39 So maybe it's a C, I'll put C plus C.
04:42 I'll let you guys pick whichever one of those you want.
04:45 But it's just in that range.
04:47 It's not like, ooh, he's gonna turn into something.
04:50 It's just like, all right, they're gambling on traits and
04:51 getting a high character guy.
04:53 Actually, Drake May quote tweeted a post with him and then called him Joe Cool.
04:57 So clearly, he's not bothered by it or anything.
05:00 So yeah, just- >> And you shouldn't be.
05:02 You can't be.
05:03 You have to, and Drake May, we've talked a million times this weekend about
05:06 the character of these guys.
05:08 Drake May knows where he's at.
05:09 He knows his stance in this franchise, his number three overall pick.
05:12 And he also understands that you need backup quarterbacks.
05:16 People who don't understand that you need backup quarterbacks,
05:18 those are the crazy QBs, right?
05:20 This guy was taken with the 193rd pick.
05:22 It's Joe Milton.
05:23 And I don't say that negatively.
05:24 I just say that he's not on the same level as Drake May, and
05:27 I think everybody knows it.
05:27 So good on Drake May for welcoming him to the team.
05:30 Good on the Patriots for giving us some fun in training camp.
05:33 A lot of deep balls, a lot of bombs with Drake May and
05:36 Joe Milton in preseason this year.
05:38 So that's gonna do it for our Patriots Draft Central coverage this weekend.
05:43 Make sure to check everything that we've done, whether it's Draft Central,
05:47 Patriots Beat, Patriots Daily, Bedard, Callahan.
