00:05 >> Drake May, it's Drake May.
00:08 >> Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
00:11 Get paid baby, boom.
00:14 >> Didn't you sweat for a second?
00:17 >> For a second I thought JJ was gonna be there.
00:19 >> I'm publishing right now.
00:21 >> Didn't you say, and there it is breaking news,
00:24 the Patriots have a quarterback, that quarterback is Drake May.
00:28 That guy is the guy that everybody- >> It's Drake May.
00:33 >> The Patriots need to send the commanders a fruit basket,
00:36 gave them Christian Gonzalez and Drake May, are you freaking kidding me?
00:41 Two blue chippers, boom, I'm fired up.
00:44 >> The Patriots have a new quarterback, okay, so let's dissect it.
00:48 Now what?
00:49 Now what do they do?
00:51 >> Now they're good, they're good again, everything is fixed.
00:54 There's hope again, it's a reset from where we were with Mac and that's okay.
00:59 >> Look, I guess the best thing is this, whether May is good or not, nobody knows.
01:05 I just think, and again, this will sound shitty, but I don't mean it to be.
01:09 But this is a new regime, it's a GM that isn't being called a GM,
01:15 a process that's being referred to as collaborative,
01:19 potential ownership involvement.
01:22 We're not really sure what's going on in the building there, so
01:24 you don't know whether to have faith in it yet.
01:27 So I guess part of the fear was, just don't F this up, right?
01:31 >> Exactly.
01:32 >> Sometimes it is that easy, and this is kind of it,
01:37 is you take one of these three guys and then you pray they were the right guy.
01:43 And you never know which one of these it's going to be.
01:47 It's a chance that one, two, or three of these top three players is either gonna
01:51 bust or just not be what you thought they were.
01:53 That's a risk everybody takes here.
01:55 This is a guy who has all the talent, all the tools, and
02:00 Taylor has liked from day one, and that's what we got.
02:04 >> I'm having an out of body experience, I'm so happy.
02:08 The past week, week and a half has been a freaking nightmare trying to
02:13 just compartmentalize the possibility of JJ McCarthy going over Drake.
02:17 But I mean, look at these throws, that one not necessarily,
02:20 but in all seriousness.
02:22 So I've already gone over what makes him so special, but I mean, the arm talent.
02:25 One, okay, so I've already talked about the physical tools.
02:28 The biggest thing that Gerard Mayo has said consistently is that they wanted guys
02:32 who were tough and they want leaders.
02:34 LA Wolf has said the same thing.
02:35 This is a guy, all three of his brothers, his mom and his dad,
02:39 were exceptional athletes.
02:40 I think his dad and his brothers all played, or two of his brothers and
02:44 his dad played at UNC.
02:45 His brothers played basketball, his dad played football.
02:48 His mom was a really good high school athlete.
02:49 One of his brothers, I think, played at Miami or something like that.
02:52 Really athletic family.
02:54 He was the youngest kid, which you can underrate that.
02:57 But you get that competitiveness in that obviously he's got good genes.
03:01 On top of that, his teammates love them,
03:02 always talk about how fiery a competitor he was, all those kinds of things.
03:06 Clearly a tough dude.
03:07 One of my favorite plays when I was watching him was against NC State or
03:12 Clemson.
03:13 You can look at either game where they're down pretty significantly and
03:17 there's not really a great shot at them coming back.
03:18 And he's still firing passes and making plays to help them stay in the game.
03:24 I love his makeup, I love the physical skill set.
03:29 Obviously, the Patriots still need to get the best out of him and
03:32 they need to refine him so that all the, admittedly,
03:36 very bad inconsistencies with the accuracy and with the mechanics.
03:40 Those are the reasons where you're saying, okay, he may need a redshirt year.
03:44 But you're hoping you bring all these guys in, Alex Van Pelt,
03:48 who's had experience with so many different quarterbacks,
03:50 putting quarterbacks in position to succeed.
03:51 As we saw last year in Cleveland, they played five different quarterbacks and
03:55 they still managed to be a playoff team.
03:57 They made the playoffs last year?
03:59 They made the playoffs last year, didn't they?
04:00 Yeah, they did, cuz Joe Flacco, they got blown out by Houston.
04:03 But they still managed to be a playoff team through all the adversity they faced.
04:06 So obviously, TC McCartney is still an unproven commodity.
04:10 But I do think that, I mean, they still need to get the offensive tackle.
04:15 They still need to get the wide receiver.
04:16 They still need explosiveness on offense.
04:19 But Drake Mays showed in college that he can make up for
04:21 deficiencies elsewhere because he's such a talented player.
04:24 So I'm gonna pop a blood vessel in my neck, man.
04:27 I'm fired up.
04:28 This is awesome.
04:29 >> You're like Marte Mappu fired up.
04:31 I love that.
04:32 >> [LAUGH] >> It's that good.
04:34 No, I mean, look, the number one thing, and again, nobody ever knows, okay?
04:40 You just don't know.
04:42 There was people didn't like CJ Stroud last year.
04:45 I mean, and there was a, you never know, but Patriots fans, take a breath.
04:54 Your long national nightmare is over.
04:57 It doesn't mean it's gonna be successful, no.
05:00 But at least you got something to look forward to, to be excited about.
05:04 That's something you can't say.
05:06 We don't know if Mays is gonna be good, but I'm telling you, the darkness,
05:10 the dark clouds that have been over Foxborough because of their quarterback's
05:14 situation since Cam Newton to a teeny glimmer of Mac,
05:20 even though I never liked the pick and thought the ceiling was so
05:23 low on what he could be, to just watching him fall off a cliff,
05:27 whether it was all his fault or not, into just these dark, dark days.
05:31 And probably starting last season knowing you got a pretty mid QB at best.
05:37 And you're probably not gonna be bad enough to end up in a position where you
05:42 can go out and draft a replacement.
05:43 And what do you know?
05:44 They were bad enough to get to this point.
05:46 So it's a big deal that they got here, cuz this took at work, right?
05:52 This could have been a seven win team, Taylor.
05:54 This could have been a team stuck in the middle of the draft,
05:56 not able to do something like this.
05:59 They had to get here.
06:00 They had to get to two or three to get this, and they did it.
06:04 So that alone is something to be happy about and to smile about, and
06:09 it is an accomplishment.
06:10 We'll hear stuff from different people coming up here from the draft, and
06:15 I bet we'll hear reports from Foxborough.
06:18 This is their guy, this is their guy, this is their guy.
06:21 I believe a lot of those reports, I really do, Taylor.
06:23 I think this is and was their guy the whole time, I really do.
06:27 >> Like you said, Gerard Mayo was pretty, I just wanna watch the video.
06:30 I'm finally seeing him actually get taken.
06:32 Gerard Mayo was very obvious about this.
06:34 When we talked to him at the AFC coaches breakfast and he's saying,
06:37 Drake Mays is a guy who he doesn't have a ceiling.
06:40 He acknowledged the fact that he's still a very inexperienced guy.
06:43 He's 21 years old, he's gonna turn 22 at some point this season, but
06:46 he only played two seasons as a starter in college football.
06:49 He still has a lot to learn and everybody knows that.
06:52 But coaches are supposed to coach, that's the whole point of the job,
06:56 is you take these guys with all this talent.
06:58 And again, I cannot emphasize enough that Drake Mays is not a guy who's just giving
07:01 you a bundle of traits where you're like, all right, but he doesn't know how to be
07:06 accurate, he doesn't know when to throw with touch and all these things.
07:09 There's so many traits that a lot of the quarterbacks in this class don't have in
07:12 terms of their innate physical ability.
07:14 That he's gotten spades on top of, like I said earlier, the ability to attack
07:18 a defense knowing what kind of coverage structure he's getting,
07:21 to punish them for certain lapses.
07:23 And also to just make plays on his own.
07:25 Like Mac Jones, we talked about it year after year how he kept trying to do
07:29 things he couldn't do.
07:30 He kept trying to play outside of structure, be a runner,
07:32 be a guy who could throw on the run.
07:33 He couldn't do that.
07:34 Patriots finally have a guy who can truly rise all ships and
07:38 be the kind of quarterback who truly not only on the field, but also off the field.
07:43 Once I think he grows more into that leadership role, which is great for
07:46 Jacoby, can really be that guy who makes everybody around him better.
07:50 This is so exciting.
07:51 >> Testing my skills on price picks this season is the most exciting way to play
07:56 daily fantasy sports.
07:58 If you have the skills, you can turn $10 into $1,000 with just a few taps.

08:08 Pick more, pick less, it's that easy.
08:11 [MUSIC]
08:14 >> Man.
08:14 >> [LAUGH] >> Competitive again, let's go.
08:19 >> I mean, competitive or not, it's again, it's the hope.
08:21 And again, anybody who's been here, and I know a lot of you guys have not,
08:26 I mean, again, this dip that you've seen over the last few years is really
08:30 the first taste of failure.
08:32 If you're a Patriots fan, depending on how old you are when you were born,
08:36 you've seen different things.
08:38 It hasn't always been this way, but it also is hard to get out of it sometimes.
08:44 And whether it's the Patriots or whether you're rooting for
08:47 different teams here, hitting rock bottom is actually pretty cathartic.
08:52 In the sense that there's only one place to go, which is up,
08:55 you don't always get there.
08:57 But the promise and the potential and the possibility,
09:00 the winter seasons, there was a downside a little bit to the dynasty years.
09:05 There was nothing interesting that happened until the AFC Championship.
09:09 Yeah, you loved watching them steamroll teams and you wanted those rings and
09:12 you're compiling them and it's great, great, love it.
09:16 But this is like you hang on everything here, right?
09:21 The little bit of development, what are you gonna do here?
09:24 The possibility of adding weapons as you go,
09:27 the possibility of maybe having landed that guy, who knows if he's that guy or
09:32 not, and it's fun to follow here.
09:34 So again, it's pretty cool that that's what we're in here.
09:37 So let's talk about realistic expectations.
09:40 Everybody assumes, Taylor, that it's not happening, right?
09:43 Like that he's not starting.
09:46 You have Jacoby Brissette, and for the first time I'm saying Jacoby Brissette,
09:51 and I don't mean O'Shea Brissette.
09:54 Jacoby Brissette is the presumptive day one starter,
09:57 much like Cam Newton was the presumptive day one starter and
10:00 Matt came in and took it from him.
10:02 So we think because May is a little bit more raw,
10:07 needs some refining footwork mechanics that he's gonna wait it out.
10:11 What do you think?
10:12 So I'm Marvin Harrison Jr goes for nothing.
10:18 Everything has gone exactly according to plan and also no trades,
10:22 which is interesting here.
10:24 Yeah.
10:25 >> I like that, honestly, it's just these are the picks that made the most sense.
10:28 Get Tyler Murray, his big outside receiver.
10:31 He thrived with DeAndre Hopkins.
10:33 He thrived with AJ Green.
10:35 He doesn't really go in the middle of the field and Marvin Harrison Jr gives him
10:38 a guy who can win outside consistently be that dominant X that he really thrives with.
10:43 But in terms of Drake May and whether or not he's gonna start year one,
10:45 I really do think it's just gonna take some time for
10:49 him to really get the footwork under control.
10:51 To put him in a position where he can process defenses and
10:55 do certain things like that without having to necessarily take certain hits or
10:59 maybe lose his confidence.
11:00 Like you don't need to throw him into the fire.
11:02 You have Jacoby Brissett.
11:03 My thing is if he starts showing you potential in practice and
11:06 behind the scenes, you're like, no, he's got his footwork down.
11:10 He picked it up pretty quickly.
11:11 He's doing pretty accurately.
11:13 He's still got a spray miss every once in a while.
11:15 But he actually has a good training camp and preseason.
11:20 Maybe you do consider, maybe we put him out there.
11:22 Now a lot of this also depends on what's the offensive line situation.
11:25 Is Chukso Cor for good enough to really hold down that left tackle spot?
11:28 The draft somebody who can be the starter and
11:31 then maybe there's some kind of shuffling.
11:33 And also do you have that true X?
11:35 Because one thing may love throwing to his ex receiver,
11:39 that guy on the backside who is Tez Walker usually who could just win one on one.
11:43 If they get that kind of guy where you can instill confidence and
11:46 he has those playmakers who can support him as a young guy who's maybe not
11:50 gonna be where he needs to be in terms of again,
11:52 the process in certain decision making things.
11:55 I think you can play him at some point as rookie season.
11:58 But at the same time, if you are hesitant and you're like, nah,
12:01 we'd rather just have him develop behind the scenes all I Jordan love.
12:04 And then be able to put him out there when he's a bit more confident in his
12:06 abilities.
12:07 I don't think he's not confident in his abilities.
12:09 I think Drake may is supremely confident.
12:11 But at the same time, I think you have the option because Jacoby is still a very
12:14 good quarterback.
12:15 Like what the Browns they had him out there until the Sean Watson ended
12:19 his suspension.
12:20 Sean Watson goes out there and he's markedly worse and
12:22 people were like, put your Kobe back out there.
12:24 We don't wanna watch this guy.
12:26 So I think Jacoby is still a good enough quarterback as long as he stays healthy.
12:30 Where he can be your guy this season again, especially if the supporting cast
12:33 can improve with some talented explosive rookies, maybe a trade or
12:36 something like that.
12:38 And if you really, really don't want Drake May starting year one,
12:41 you have Bailey's happy who's shown two seasons in a row that he can be a solid
12:45 spot starter for you.
12:47 And this let me talk about it.
12:49 This isn't a and I know you're gonna laugh, but
12:50 this also isn't a year where you wanna win.
12:52 Like you wanna be competitive.
12:53 You don't really wanna win a ton of games necessarily because then you get another
12:56 maybe top 510 pick and you get your true number one.
12:58 I don't think I wanna do the drew 90.
13:02 Like I said, 93 drew blood.
13:04 So number one overall next year,
13:06 they come back with the number four pick Willie McGinnis.
13:08 And again, if you go back and you look at every successful team,
13:14 you look at the three, four drafts that preceded their ascent.
13:18 That's where the core comes from.
13:20 That's what you do.
13:21 You gotta nail these.
13:23 You need not just core players.
13:25 You need kind of top of your position type players.
13:29 That's where you get them.
13:31 And the cupboard has been relatively bare.
13:35 Maybe they found one in Gonzalez.
13:36 Maybe they found one in Barmore.
13:37 That's the beginning.
13:38 You're nibbling here.
13:39 Barmore is already extension eligible though.
13:41 So again, you're really only talking about.
13:45 I know just beginning to build here.
13:50 You can't do it without the quarterback.
13:52 There is an argument to build from the inside.
13:57 Go ahead. >> Chargers are also picking,
13:58 they're not trading.
13:59 >> Yep, okay.
14:00 >> Yep.
14:01 >> Yeah, there's also a report here and
14:03 we'll get to this a little bit though.
14:04 The Patriots, according to Ian Rapp, reported on film network had big time trade
14:07 offers, what those are exactly, who knows, but stick and pick.
14:10 And this is kind of plays to my point here is sometimes it makes more sense to kind of
14:15 build in the trenches before you go out and you get your quarterback.
14:18 Because it's not only who's he throwing to Taylor, it's you wanna keep them alive.
14:21 And if you have any notion of starting Drake May and again,
14:25 some of the best quarterbacks in the world saw ghosts while they were, what do you got?
14:31 Your reactions are killing me.
14:33 >> Sorry, I did.
14:35 >> Just say it, just say it.
14:36 >> Chargers took Malik neighbors finally got a weapon.
14:40 Let's go.
14:40 Okay.
14:41 >> Well, you knew that was coming to, when they got rid of their receivers here,
14:45 you knew that that was the thing that was there.
14:47 Again, the board's been incredibly predictable so far.
14:50 But as far as this goes, you have no choice when you pick this high,
14:54 you've got to go with the quarterback here.
14:56 So you got to address some other needs.
14:57 The sexy thing obviously is receiver, but
15:00 I really think you have to, if you have any hope of playing Drake May,
15:04 he needs protection more than he needs weapons to begin with.
15:09 You start worrying about that later, not saying you don't wanna see one, but
15:12 there is that possibility of potentially trading a pick as Zack Cox said earlier.
15:17 Tom Curran had alluded to the possibility, NBC's Tom Curran,
15:21 of Brandon Iuke being in play for that 34th pick.
15:24 And I think if you get through round one today, Taylor, and
15:27 Iuke's still a 49er, that becomes interesting and real.
15:31 Entering day two tomorrow for sure.
15:33 But right now, you have what you have, which is Kendrick Bourne,
15:39 Demario Douglas.
15:40 >> I also, I will say this, I think Demario Douglas-
15:44 >> A jacked up, a jacked up McMahon Thornton.
15:48 >> Demario Douglas is someone who, remember last year we were talking about all
15:51 the quarter, all the receivers.
15:52 Now everybody was basically a different version of Zay Flowers.
15:56 It's like there was Zay, and then Josh Downs was day two Zay, and
16:00 then Demario Douglas was day three Zay.
16:02 Josh Downs was a really good receiver for Drake May, a guy he went to a lot.
16:06 I think Demario Douglas is going to feast with Drake May on those slot days.
