Arrowhead Report's Tucker Franklin and Mile High Huddle's Chad Jensen discuss what games against the Kansas City Chiefs mean to Denver Broncos quarterback Drew Lock ahead of the Broncos and Chiefs first meeting of the year.
Transcript
00:00I mean, this is going to be probably the biggest story for a while is with Drew
00:04Locke coming back to Kansas City from the area, from Lee Summit.
00:07And he said earlier this week he enjoys putting on the dark fader mask.
00:10And I think that's awesome.
00:12As a Mizzou fan, it kind of makes me quiver a little bit.
00:14It was one of those pics when I saw him go to the Broncos a little upset
00:17because I feel kind of dirty as someone who covers the Chiefs
00:20wanting to see Drew Locke do well.
00:22So what do you think these games kind of mean to Drew?
00:26Well, I think they're very important emotionally for Drew Locke.
00:30Because, you know, his immediate family, his mom and dad and his sister,
00:34you know, they've all flipped and they're sporting the orange and blue
00:38and they're all about the Broncos.
00:39But Drew Locke grew up in a very devoted and fanatical Chiefs family.
00:45And so so many of his cousins and his uncles.
00:48I mean, there's still anyone who's a fan of a team.
00:51It's hard to just sever that emotional connection that you have.
00:55And so for Drew Locke, of course, he's a professional and it's a different matter.
00:58It's the Denver Broncos who are signing his checks.
01:01So when he talks about, you know, putting on the villain mask
01:03and putting on Darth Vader mask and going out there and embracing the dark side.
01:07I think for him, you know, he's really looking at it
01:09more from just kind of the emotional family dynamic aspect,
01:13where he's got this group of people that, you know, he's bound to from blood
01:17and and, you know, being thicker than water.
01:19And they all love the Chiefs.
01:20And he if he gets his way and could finally lead the Broncos
01:24to a win over the Chiefs for the first time since week two, 2015.
01:27I think it's very important to him.
01:29I don't think the the I don't think what's a good word for it.
01:33I don't think the law of averages is lost on him in terms of,
01:38you know, it's been a long time since the Broncos beat the Chiefs.
01:41I mean, I've been following the Denver Broncos
01:43since I was knee high to a grasshopper back in the 80s.
01:46I can think of no other reign.
01:48And I'm not, you know, one of these historical statisticians
01:50that can just pull on this and that off the top of my head.
01:53But nine straight wins for the Chiefs.
01:55And I can't even think for the Broncos.
01:57I know, you know, they had a hard time beating Peyton Manning
01:59during that reign all the way up until that second meeting in 2015
02:03when he threw all those picks.
02:04And that was the game in which, you know, he got hurt.
02:06And, you know, next game, enter Brock Osweiler.
02:09You know, that was maybe two or three year window.
02:12We're talking now half a decade in which the Chiefs have have yet
02:15to lose to the Broncos.
02:16So I think for Drew Lock, it's very, very important.
02:19It would mean a lot emotionally and just kind of, you know, also
02:23it would there.
02:24I'd be lying to you if I didn't admit that there's a
02:27I would say it's a minority of Broncos fans,
02:29but there is a minority of Broncos fans who now question Drew Lock
02:32as is he the answer long term and not so much because of anything
02:35he has or hasn't done on the field, but more so just because,
02:39you know, two years now, two serious injuries that have cost him time.
02:42They worry that is this a guy that's going to be,
02:44you know, compromised because of his health?
02:46Or is this a guy that can overcome those things?
02:48A win against the Chiefs one week removed from a win over the Patriots
02:52nine point dogs, of course, going into New England, they win that game.
02:55I think it would go a long way towards solving that.
02:57So it's very important for Drew Lock in particular.
03:00You bring up something that I want to talk about next.
03:02Do you think people are kind of too harsh on Drew?
03:04Like I saw some people on Twitter
03:06kind of go at him for his stat line against the Patriots,
03:09but they did have three big drops that could have really totally changed
03:12the stat line for four big. Yeah.
03:15I mean, three were in the end zone.
03:18The fourth one was a was a 40 yard gain, and it was put right on the numbers
03:22against arguably the number one corner in the game, Stephon Gilmore,
03:25in which the receiver Deshaun Hamilton had more than one step on his guy.
03:29Locke dropped it right in the bucket.
03:31If he and it was in stride, if he catches that,
03:33there's always a chance Gilmore can shoestring him and bring him down.
03:36But there's probably better than 50 50 chance that Hamilton goes into the end zone.
03:41And so, yeah, he I'll tell you this.
03:43Drew Locke was dropping dimes.
03:45Anyone who watched that game against the Patriots early on the first two,
03:49three quarters, actually, he was dropping dimes.
03:51His receivers just let him down.
03:53And it's no big surprise why it's all a young group of guys inexperienced.
03:57And he sat on the sideline for the better part of a month of real time.
04:01Chemistry was off. The juice was off the whole nine yards.
04:04So I understand why things weren't exactly firing on all cylinders,
04:08but where it went off the rails and why he's received so much criticism was
04:12he had really quarterbacked a good game.
04:14He got the Broncos out in front of a multi-score leading on, you know,
04:17on the Patriots at Gillette.
04:19And then a series of three plays starts with a muffed snap
04:23that he that was his fault.
04:24He took accountability for he fell on it.
04:26But that once muffed snap seemed to just kind of discombobulate him.
04:30Next play is on third down.
04:32He miscommunicates with the receiver.
04:34The receiver is running a nine route.
04:35He throws the back shoulder because it's a blitz. It's picked off.
04:38And then literally the very next snap, when they get the ball back,
04:41he throws an ill-advised pick into double coverage.
04:44And, you know, granted the Patriots guy made a phenomenal play to intercept that.
04:48But he, on one hand, went to great length to garner a lot of love
04:52and respect and props from Broncos fans and media people alike,
04:57only to then have everything kind of come into question with
05:00that many boneheaded plays in such a short amount of time.
05:03And if it weren't for an inspired kind of collective performance
05:06from the defense, we could be seeing in a totally different story
05:08going into week seven.
