Arrowhead Report's Tucker Franklin, Jordan Foote and Conner Christopherson discuss if it is necessary or unnecessary for the Kansas City Chiefs to make a move before the NFL trade deadline.
Transcript
00:00 So let's move on to our next one.
00:02 This one says chiefs shouldn't trade for anyone.
00:05 They can pick star players from the ones dropped by other teams instead.
00:11 Hmm. Necessary or unnecessary.
00:14 Who was to take this one first?
00:16 I'll take this one.
00:17 I mean, like, first of all, like teams don't drop star players normally.
00:22 Like, I guess you could make the case of Le'Veon Bellum.
00:24 Like, he's a star player, whatever.
00:26 Like, he hasn't been a quote unquote star player since he entered
00:30 the Jets organization and like had the reputation of a star player.
00:33 I mean, teams don't take guys that are extremely productive and say,
00:38 Oh, we're just going to like get rid of this guy.
00:41 Like like that does not happen in the NFL unless there's like
00:44 a locker room issue or something like that.
00:46 But I mean, can the chiefs take
00:49 like a Carlos Dunlap and pick him up even though he wasn't cut?
00:53 He was traded for something like that.
00:55 Absolutely. Could they trade for like a Julio Jones
01:00 on a completely out of left field move?
01:02 Sure, they could.
01:03 Will they? Probably not.
01:04 But like, can you still make productive
01:07 like good moves in season at the trade deadline or close to it
01:11 with guys that there aren't markets for like Don Taripo?
01:15 Like if the Chiefs needed a nose tackle and a guy who was familiar with the team,
01:20 at least not necessarily the system, could they do that? Absolutely.
01:23 So I don't think there are like a ton of trades.
01:27 I know me and Tucker talked about guys that we would like to see on the team
01:30 that would kind of benefit everything.
01:32 But in terms of star players, I think that's more of an offseason thing
01:36 rather than a midseason Chiefs move.
01:38 I would say to this, the Jets don't have any more star players
01:44 to surprisingly cut, so I don't know where we're getting these star players from.
01:50 So I think you said it well that star players aren't really cut right now.
01:54 Le'Veon Bell was kind of an exception just because he was providing.
01:59 I think he was probably fighting with Adam Gase a fair bit.
02:03 Who wouldn't really?
02:05 I mean, exactly. Have you seen his press conferences?
02:08 Oh, my God.
02:09 But I don't see anywhere around the league
02:13 another star player in quotes that would be cut before the trade deadline.
02:19 I mean, the Chiefs could probably trade for one.
02:21 I think there's going to be probably one more star player that will be dealt.
02:26 If I were to put money on one, it'd be Stephon Gilmore, which
02:30 I wouldn't mind the Chiefs being interested in for sure.
02:34 He's kind of fits the profile, what the Chiefs would want,
02:38 because he's under contract this year and next year.
02:41 And then after that, he it's kind of like he's going to be over 30.
02:45 And there's no reason to resign him, which kind of fits
02:48 what the Chiefs want to do in competing right now while Mahomes is still cheap.
02:52 But other than that, I mean, they can.
02:55 I think he's also kind of referring to like last year
02:57 when we picked up Stefan Wisniewski and he played great at guard
03:01 or other late season additions that she's had over the last few years.
03:06 I've been great.
03:06 The Chiefs can certainly try.
03:09 There's no reason not to at least try it if they feel like they're deficient
03:13 in an area, but I don't think we should expect them to pick up game
03:16 changers during the season or trade for them unless he gives up a lot of
03:20 unless they give up a lot of trade capital.
03:23 Tucker, hear me out here.
03:24 I'm going to jump in real quick.
03:27 OK, Chiefs Jets Sunday, 12 o'clock Arrowhead time.
03:32 Winner take all for Quinn and Williams.
03:35 Like no draft picks involved.
03:37 No issues there.
03:39 Like add him into the rotation.
03:40 Is there a need? No.
03:42 He's a young, exciting player on a rookie contract.
03:44 Just whoever wins takes Quinn and Williams home with them.
03:48 Like it's no loss for the Chiefs.
03:50 I mean, it'd be embarrassing if they lost to the Jets
03:52 and then take a talented player home.
03:54 And that's kind of a
03:57 diversion from what we're talking about.
03:58 But that'd be a pretty cool thing to see.
03:59 I mean, I'd even give up like the thing with the Chiefs is like, I mean,
04:03 Brett Veach has a decent like track record in terms of drafting players.
04:07 I'd be OK with giving up a first or second round pick for like a proven
04:12 really, really good player on a rookie contract.
04:14 Like not that the Chiefs need it, but someone talked about Quinn and Williams.
04:18 And I think that would be the coolest thing ever.
04:21 It was noted Jets beat reporter Manish Mehta, who
04:25 I don't think I've seen a single Jets fan like so.
04:29 And I don't know if he has a great track record
04:34 and the Jets did come out and say that that Connor taking shots on the pod.
04:38 But I mean, I would love it, too.
04:42 I would love Quinn and Williams.
04:43 I think, yeah, we would just should just be if Chris Jones full time
04:47 to defensive end, if we trade for him, you'd have to.
04:49 I mean, I do it on Madden, so I'd be down for it. Yeah.
04:52 It would be at that point.
04:56 Yeah, it's a little bit different in the NFL, but still.
04:58 The key point that this guy made, the Chiefs shouldn't trade for anyone.
05:02 I actually agree with that.
05:03 I don't think there's any impact trades that she's could make it a trade
05:07 general this year, and they don't have glaring needs like they did
05:10 last year at cornerback and linebacker, especially with Legere's need
05:14 and will gay coming up and playing well.
05:17 So you mean Ben Neiman?
05:20 I said, well, yes, Willie Gay.
05:23 I don't even speak that name around me.
05:27 So I don't think they should really do anything unless there's some like
05:34 fleecing available to them when Brett reaches out feelers.
05:40 Yeah, I totally agree.
05:42 I went on an Iowa radio show this morning.
05:45 Not a big deal.
05:47 Humble brag. Humble brag.
05:48 But I talked about this, too.
05:51 I talked about the trade deadline.
05:52 I said, you know, I don't I don't think it's necessary.
05:55 Hey, unnecessary for the Chiefs to need to trade for somebody.
06:01 I know he said the Chiefs shouldn't trade.
06:03 So that would then be necessary. Right.
06:06 Am I tracking that right in my head? Necessary. Yes.
06:08 Yeah. So I guess it would be necessary,
06:10 but it's unnecessary for the Chiefs to try to force a trade
06:14 because you're right, Connor, they don't have any glaring
06:16 downfalls.
06:19 They really have the right players, I think, in the right positions.
06:22 They're just lacking the consistency like we talked about earlier.
06:24 And now the podcast has come full circle.
06:26 I'm going to go ahead and end the broadcast.
