Arrowhead Report's Tucker Franklin and Mark Van Sickle break down the NFL MVP race and discuss if Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes win his second MVP.
Transcript
00:00obviously other quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers Russell Wilson Josh Allen Kyla Murray even Delvin cook you getting in there and
00:06Causing a little bit of buzz for the MVP if you had to take a guess right now
00:11Who would be the other player the other I don't want to say quarterback
00:15Who'd be the other player that could really cause a threat to Mahomes winning the MVP?
00:21Probably Rodgers at the beginning of the season. I was on the Russell Wilson train for MVP just because
00:29I mean he was I think had better numbers and even the homes did in
00:332018 through the first four weeks of the season, so that was just kind of
00:39Indescribable because that hadn't been done before in NFL history he passed Mahomes and Manning
00:43I think for the best start to a season, but then the turnover started piling up and
00:49so that that hurt the Seahawks in general in in their win-loss column, and I think it hurt Russ in the MVP race and
00:57Aaron Rodgers, I think is probably the next up just because his stats are just so similar to my homes right now
01:04He did have a pretty off game. I think it was against the Bucs a few weeks ago. Yeah, and
01:10Their offense only scored. I think ten points and that's not gonna happen to my homes. So if you're looking at complete seasons
01:18It comes down to it. They're both very similar
01:21Voters might look at that one game even yeah and and throw it towards my homes
01:27Yeah, I could see that you look at Aaron Rodgers numbers. He's got
01:312253 passing yards 24 touchdowns two interceptions very similar touchdown to interception ratio as my homes does
01:38I believe my homes leads the league. I think it's a point three percent touchdown or his interception percent is point three percent
01:44Which is kind of like the inverse of touchdown to interception ratio, I guess
01:49Again not a big numbers guy. Not a big math guy, but I know he leads the league in interception percentage
01:56Russell Wilson a guy that you mentioned who has been you know slinging the ball
02:002541 yards 28 TDS but eight interceptions and that's not counting the fumbles. He's he's having a fumble problem, too
02:07I didn't look up the fumbles. I'll do that one while you're talking
02:10Yeah
02:12Russell Wilson like what what he does is he's kind of like my homes and that he likes to extend plays
02:18they haven't had the best offensive line in Seattle for quite a while actually, but
02:23Seems like Wilson just kind of rolls around makes things happen. He's also another guy that on third and long
02:29He just makes plays but sometimes when the offensive line can't hold him for long enough. He's gonna be fumbling the ball
02:35That's just something that has happened throughout Russell's career
02:39Another reason probably why he hasn't ever had a single MVP vote, which is very crazy. I don't know if you've heard that sad or not
02:45Russell Wilson has never had an MVP vote in his entire career for how good he's been. It's kind of crazy
02:52He'll I'm sure he'll get a vote this year, but I don't think that it's gonna be quite good enough
02:58Despite his pace being to throw for over 50 touchdowns this year
03:02Yeah, I just looked up. He's got three fumbles this season
03:05Which if you're a quarterback, that's not a very good look
03:09But it's kind of tough because that's what eight nine ten eleven turnovers and I believe he's got
03:15Was it six in the last two games?
03:18So over half of his turnovers have come in these last two games and you've kind of see his stock
03:23I guess you could say his MVP stock has started to fall, but I think
03:29That's kind of the narrative this year
03:31ESPN's
03:32Greenberg I forget is Mike Greenberg. Yeah, I can like duh
03:35But he was on get up and this is what he had to say about the MVP race and
03:40He even talked about Patrick Mahomes and when it comes to everyone else in the MVP race
03:44So here's what he had to say about this season's MVP
03:48What has happened in all of sports is an MVP has become sort of a narrative award
03:52It's the reason Michael Jordan didn't win it practically every year during his career
03:56It's the reason LeBron James probably should have two or three more regular season MVPs. There's a narrative here
04:02We want to give it to other people of the narrative this year at least in part is it's Russell Wilson's turn
04:08He's never even gotten a vote and I'm all good with that
04:10But here's the reality for the next 15 years Patrick Mahomes is the MVP
04:15He's the best player in the league and he's the most valuable
04:18So my suggestion is let's rename the award the Patrick Mahomes Award and just present it to the next most valuable guy
04:25I think it actually makes sense
04:27It'll alleviate a lot of these problems and that way you don't have to give him the MVP every single year and
04:33Continue to pursue the narrative, which is what this award has been. So I love what Greeney has to say there
04:39About the award being named the Patrick Mahomes Award
04:43It won't happen obviously, but it is it is something to think about because we've even talked about on this podcast
04:49I might not have talked about it with you how Mahomes kind of already has voter fatigue
04:53Kind of like the LeBron James effect how LeBron James doesn't get the MVP
04:58When he should be getting it every year because he's the most valuable player because any team he goes on
05:03Automatically becomes good if the Chiefs don't have Patrick Mahomes, you know, they still have other weapons
05:08but the Chiefs go down a considerable amount and I think you could still say the same thing about Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson and
05:15but I think Patrick Mahomes is just so
05:19So head and shoulders above these guys that he's really only compared to himself I
05:25Totally agree with you. It's
05:27Kind of wild about what like you said, it's kind of like the LeBron James effect
05:31Like he's so good
05:32He goes whatever team goes to he's gonna be in the playoffs and the Chiefs like you said, they they do have weapons
05:38They have Andy Reid. They have Brett Veach who makes good moves, but without Patrick Mahomes
05:43They're probably going to the playoffs still every because that's just what Andy Reid does
05:46But they're not making it to the Super Bowl. They're not winning a Super Bowl
05:50that's just you got to have that quarterback that can get you over the top and
05:55Patrick Mahomes
05:56Already proven that he can do it
