00:00 Welcome back on the C Morning Show. We're gonna jump into our second discussion.
00:03 Today we're going to talk to this special community who really really cares about children's education.
00:09 And what do they do? They provide them with books, correct?
00:11 That is right, Marissa. Yes, from cognitive growth to emotional intelligence.
00:17 Books play a pivotal role in shaping a child's development and fostering their love for learning.
00:23 However, in today's modern era, access to literacy for kids in Indonesia is still limited.
00:30 Yes, but fortunately to address the issue, there is a community called Jendela Jakarta Community or Jendela Community
00:38 that aims to help or accommodate kids' education and reading needs by providing many books and libraries in several cities across Indonesia.
00:48 Moreover, the community also offers fun and engaging activities for kids to learn.
00:54 And to learn more about this community and find out more about their efforts,
01:08 let's meet our guest of today, Jendela Jakarta Community, comedy Sartika Andarimurti here in the studio.
01:15 Good morning, Sartika. Thank you so much for joining us.
01:18 Good morning, Tika.
01:20 Wow, amazing things that you are doing.
01:23 Could you tell us a little bit about the inspiration of Jendela Jakarta Community?
01:29 And what's the story and how did it get started?
01:31 Okay, actually, to be honest, I'm not a founder of the Jendela Jakarta Community,
01:37 but I have been a volunteer for a couple of years and a committee for the donation division for Jendela Jakarta in 2024.
01:48 So I will say the story behind the Jendela Community.
01:53 Back then in 2011, actually, there were three students from the University of Gejah Mada in Yogyakarta.
02:04 They were Kak Prihatiniksi, Kak Taufan, and Kak Marisa.
02:07 I would say that they are the founders of the Jendela Community nowadays.
02:13 They initiated for building a community to teach children,
02:17 especially who become the refugees of the Mount Merapi eruption in Yogyakarta.
02:23 Right, at that time, that was in 2010.
02:26 Yeah, that's right.
02:27 I see. Continue, yes.
02:29 Furthermore, after they graduated and went back to their hometown, Kak Prihatiniksi went back to Jakarta.
02:37 And Kak Pri and friends realized that the inequality of economic and social status in Jakarta was very, very contrast, right?
02:48 Yes, compared.
02:49 The access for the better education was very easy, but at the same time, the negative things were very easy too.
02:58 Yes, yes.
02:59 So, the Jendela Jakarta Community was born in 2012.
03:07 So, what sort of activities that the Jendela Community does?
03:09 Because, I mean, we did introduce a little bit that, you know, you're encouraging children to read books.
03:15 So, what are the specific activities that you do regularly?
03:19 Yeah, the program regular is the weekly classes in every libraries.
03:24 We have three libraries in Jakarta, in Manggarai, Sungai Bambu, and Serpong.
03:29 So, the weekly class is just on Sunday.
03:35 The Sungai Bambu is in the morning, and Manggarai and Serpong is in the afternoon, after lunch.
03:41 But there is a special class on Sunday and Saturday for the Manggarai Library.
03:48 It's called Jendela Mengaji, Janji.
03:51 Oh, Janji.
03:52 To learn Quran, the Islamic topics, but special for Manggarai.
03:57 Special for Manggarai.
03:58 So, this community has been going on for 13 years now.
04:03 And I believe education can transform children.
04:06 Because I remember, Tikka, 15 years ago when I was a teacher,
04:12 the thing that I love about teaching children is you see the transformation
04:17 from not being able to do something to being able to do something.
04:22 Could you please share some of the lovely stories that you've encountered over the past,
04:27 I don't know, 13 years or a couple of years that you've been working for the community,
04:30 the transformation in children that you've seen?
04:34 The biggest transformation is about how big is interest to children about the gadgets, actually.
04:41 Right.
04:42 Like, there's technology advancement in their daily social media games.
04:47 That's the biggest challenge for our community, actually.
04:51 So, we utilize the gadgets for delivering materials,
04:55 showing videos, tutorials about handcraft, handmade stories,
05:01 from their own stories and read them.
05:06 And yeah, public speaking, they read in the class.
05:11 And we have mandatory reading time before the class.
05:14 So, about 15 until 30 minutes, we make a relay game to reading just one paragraph, one kid.
05:23 Yes, that's a great method. And then how do you do it?
05:26 And it's the focus.
05:27 And also, absolutely, it's a successful program.
05:32 So, they want to read and after that, they're ready to serve the material.
05:39 Yes, that's great. That's a great method.
05:42 Yeah, because one paragraph, one kid has to explain.
05:45 So, everybody's learning a little bit, but also learning the entire thing all together.
05:49 I love that.
05:51 What are the ages of these children, typically?
05:54 It is various, actually.
05:57 Like, the high school, elementary school is just more than the high school, actually.
06:05 Like, the playground, there is a playground because we do not have any limitation of age.
06:11 So, when the brothers, like the elementary school comes to the libraries and bring their sister,
06:21 their brother, little brother, we do the learning about them.
06:27 We mean it's the learning based on their age.
06:33 And the Sunday school, school's on Sunday.
06:36 How many hours of learning do they get?
06:40 Like, the Sungai Buamu is just start 9.30am to 11am.
06:48 That's okay. Yeah, from 9.30am to 11.30am.
06:51 Yeah, I mean, as long as it's regular, right? Doing it regularly.
06:55 How do you create the lesson plans every week?
07:00 What?
07:01 How do you create the lesson plans?
07:02 Because usually, you know, like, when you teach, you would usually,
07:05 "Oh, today I'm going to focus on this for children."
07:08 We have a meeting regularly for the Friday night.
07:13 So, we're not going out to entertain ourselves.
07:18 Commitment, people!
07:20 Back to the community.
07:21 We do the, like, a meeting, a simple meeting to have how they deliver material
07:27 because the volunteer is not the regular volunteer.
07:30 Right.
07:31 There are new volunteers, so we have to explain from the start how the Jidila community,
07:37 how the vision, how the goals, like that.
07:40 How do we create more regular volunteers?
07:44 Because I can only imagine from the children's perspective.
07:47 I mean, maybe some of the children are feeling like,
07:50 "Oh, you know, each week we have different teachers."
07:53 But also, I imagine children can learn better when they're familiar with their teachers.
07:59 Yeah, because it creates a certain bond, a certain respect towards each other
08:02 from students to children, no, from students to teachers, teachers to students, right?
08:07 So, how can we create more bond?
08:10 Yeah, and more regular volunteers teaching for this community?
08:14 Actually, I'm a regular volunteer.
08:17 You are?
08:18 Good for you, Tika.
08:19 Yeah, before I did get myself to be a committee.
08:22 Right, right.
08:23 So, yeah, I have many children that know me.
08:27 Yeah.
08:27 So, yeah, I'm the regular one.
08:30 And it just depends on the personality of the volunteer, actually.
08:35 They may need their, maybe their business one.
08:39 Yes.
08:40 Yeah.
08:40 Yes, how do we become volunteers?
08:43 Yes.
08:43 I know that from my co-workers, actually.
08:46 Like the Jundula Jakarta community to teach children
08:51 that maybe living in a struggling environment.
08:55 Yes.
08:56 Yes, so can we get access of that information
08:59 if we want to volunteer?
09:00 Like, yeah, are you on social media?
09:02 Just, the easiest way, just follow our Instagram @junduladojakarta.
09:07 There is free links there.
09:09 If you want to make a volunteer, like a donation, collaboration event.
09:15 Yes.
09:15 Okay, that's all there.
09:16 That's all in Instagram.
09:18 Okay, Instagram, I love it.
09:19 And, Tika, we were mentioning earlier that you were saying that you deliver some of the materials through gadgets.
09:26 But I remember also when we were talking just off air before we went on,
09:30 that you also provide encyclopedias for these children.
09:34 Can you tell us a little bit more about that?
09:36 Yeah, besides that, the gadgets want to attract their interest, yeah?
09:42 Find the same interest.
09:45 We provide the various books like encyclopedias, fairy tales, cartoons,
09:51 with the colorful books, reanimation, interesting stories, just like that.
09:56 Legends, history.
09:58 Yeah, we do like the, we do not always have reading books,
10:03 but the more interactive and creative ones.
10:08 Yes.
10:09 So they want to focus on reading books.
10:12 Yeah, grabs their attention.
10:13 Yeah.
10:14 Yes, so donations, people can make donations in the form of,
10:19 in the form of money, in the form of books.
10:21 What else?
10:22 Anything, like the supporting tools for the learning.
10:26 Ah, like pencils.
10:27 Popcorn, stationery, tables.
10:30 Okay.
10:31 Just like that.
10:32 Oh, that's great.
10:33 Okay, for those of you who want to support this community, by the way, there are four Jendela community.
10:38 There's the Jendela Jakarta community, and then Jendela Jember community,
10:43 Jendela Lampung community, and Jendela Jogja community.
10:47 So if you happen to be in those cities or in those towns,
10:51 please do help these guys, because they're doing such a good thing for the children,
10:57 especially from poor families who probably don't have access to proper education.
11:01 At least this is the way we can do to help them.
11:05 Thank you so much, Tika.
11:06 Thank you so much.
11:07 Thank you so much.
11:08 Best of luck with your projects.
