00:00We are celebrating the 50th anniversary of our network
00:04and we are also known as one of the former news anchors of PTV
00:08who brings shocking news and information to every home, inside and outside the country.
00:14We are live with Atty. Mark Castrodez, former PTV anchor and public affair host
00:19to share with us his hashtag, Kwentong PTV.
00:22Good morning, Atty.
00:23Good morning, Chi and Ryan. Thank you for having me again.
00:26Good morning, Atty.
00:27Atty., let's start right away. How did you start your career here in PTV?
00:32It started around 2007. I was the moderator of the first youth debate show.
00:39Because there was a recent news, a charter change that time,
00:45so Malacanang decided to have a debate show.
00:49So I moderated that.
00:50So after that debate show, that's when the news and public affairs started.
00:55How long did you stay here in PTV during that time?
00:58In and out since 2007, but really regular around 2011 to 2015.
01:05That's a long time.
01:06Okay, for you, what is the story or event that for you is very memorable here in PTV?
01:12Oh, so many memorable things during that period.
01:15There was the impeachment, there was the selection of the chief justice.
01:20On a personal note, I learned so many things here in PTV before.
01:24I grew up in Mindanao, I couldn't speak a lot of Filipino back then.
01:28So I really got the chance to speak Tagalog, to speak Filipino,
01:32which has benefited me my entire career, after PTV that is.
01:37So I have so many memories meeting, interviewing Conrad de Quiroz
01:42and all the other dignitaries here in the Philippines.
01:46So I learned a lot, I met a lot.
01:49And the historical moments during that period were, to get a front row seat to those was special.
01:56I'm a bit related to Atty. because he said he's from Mindanao.
01:59I'm also from Leyte.
02:01So there are a lot of words that mix together, I don't know if the meaning is still the same.
02:05But Atty., aside from being a news anchor, you also hosted a public affairs show.
02:09Which one, Atty., can we say that really struck you?
02:13The public affairs show, Special Forum.
02:17The Special Forum ran for quite a while and there were a lot of guests.
02:22And the transition period from President Gloria to Pinoy and then on to Duterte.
02:33So basically three presidents.
02:36The Special Forum tackled many of the transition concerns during that time.
02:42So that was a great opportunity, especially that we handled a large group.
02:47It was such a production every time we had it.
02:50Okay, earlier you mentioned that PTV helped you when it came to your Tagalog.
02:55But aside from that, what else did you learn here at PTV that has a big impact on who you are now?
03:03That's one.
03:05The language is the first thing.
03:08The second thing is confidence.
03:10Because if you're from the province, you're from Mindanao,
03:13and then you come over to Manila to work here,
03:16your confidence needs a little boost, right?
03:20So having access to these people in the country, talking to them,
03:26makes you feel that you're part of the discourse.
03:29Makes you feel that you're part of it, that you have the right to listen to the people.
03:35So that's a huge help.
03:37And then, it was also here in PTV that I chanced upon a program of government,
03:42the DOST Setup.
03:44It's a program of DOST, and that's what helped our business.
03:49Because through that, I was able to interview sometimes,
03:52and then we applied, and then the business grew because of the assistance of government.
03:57So, so many firsts and so many boosts I got from working here.
04:03It's like we're really the same, Terni.
04:05Because before, you'd just see it on TV, and then suddenly, it's you.
04:09It's like, it's like...
04:11Well, I can relate to what you're saying.
04:13When we learn about the services of the government,
04:15and then actually, we're able to avail it.
04:17We're happy that we're the ones saying this and that.
04:21But Terni, how important, as a former PTV News anchor,
04:26how important is the role, the information that we're giving,
04:30especially the critical things?
04:32That's a very good question.
04:34The discourse of our country, the question is, who's in control?
04:40If it's all negative that's coming out in our news,
04:44what the Filipinos will know is that it's all negative.
04:48And unfortunately, for some media outlets,
04:51that's the news, the controversial, the sensational.
04:55So, we also need to share with our countrymen,
04:59the good things that are happening.
05:01As a government channel, it's very important for PTV to do its job well.
05:06And it's a good effort to help our countrymen
05:12with the good things that are happening.
05:14So, that part, interviewing people who might not be as famous,
05:19not as controversial, but need to be heard.
05:22So, government programs need to be broadcasted and disseminated.
05:27And then also talking to people who need to be heard,
05:30even if they're not as famous or as the most well-known during the moment.
05:36Lastly, Atty. Mark, please say a few words to our network
05:39and to the public for the golden anniversary of People's Television.
05:43For our network, thank you so much for having me for a few years.
05:48My life has changed because of my exposure here at PTV4.
05:53I learned a lot, I got to know a lot of people.
05:56I developed a lot of professional habits because of my work here at PTV4.
06:27Very well said.
06:29Thank you so much for visiting us and for sharing your story on PTV.
06:35It's a great honor to hear your journey as one of the servants for the country.
06:41Thank you.
06:42Once again, we are joined by Atty. Mark Astrodes,
06:45former anchor and public affairs host of People's Television Network.
