00:03 Hello, welcome back to the C Morning Show, our first talk show.
00:06 We'll discuss about the world of energy and environment.
00:09 Energy transition is gaining great momentum in the world today
00:13 due to its ambitious target, PIN to save the earth.
00:17 Yes, the Indonesian government has been promoting sustainable energy transitions
00:21 to reduce carbon emissions.
00:23 However, this requires the role of the community to bring awareness
00:27 related to energy transition and emission reduction.
00:31 Yes, and to talk more about this, we have Generasi Energi Bersih
00:36 or GenB National Chairperson, Maya Lind,
00:39 and as well GenB Advisor, Irwan Sari Fudin.
00:43 The group focuses on delivering information related to emission reduction
00:47 and energy transition and is supported by the Institute for Essential Services Reform or IESR.
00:55 So, good morning Maya and also the advisor, Sari Fudin.
01:00 Good morning.
01:00 Yes.
01:01 Good morning.
01:02 Yes, good morning. Thank you for coming to the studio.
01:04 Sure.
01:04 Yes, thank you for inviting us. It's a pleasure to be here today.
01:08 Yes, so can you tell us like currently the state of energy transition in Indonesia?
01:15 Okay, we believe that Indonesian government actually has a strong commitment for energy transition,
01:21 just energy transition narrative.
01:23 But as we've seen the detail as policy, we can say that Indonesia is not strong enough,
01:30 the commitment to reduce their carbon footprint in global scale compared to other countries in the world.
01:37 So actually, we have still a long way to improve.
01:39 For example, Indonesian government is actually now targeting net zero emission in 2060 or earlier,
01:46 but IESR study and also what GenB believe in, based on our study,
01:50 is Indonesia actually technically and economically feasible to reach zero emission in 2050.
01:58 Faster.
01:58 So 10 years earlier.
01:59 Okay.
02:00 Right. Zero emissions meaning no emission at all from any industry, from any sectors?
02:06 Yes, actually when we say zero emission, it's usually from energy sectors.
02:11 This includes the industries, this includes the transportation, and also the power sector as overall.
02:17 But when Indonesian government says it's actually one tier lower, they say it's net zero emissions.
02:24 So actually the emission is still happening in energy sector, but it's offset by the land use.
02:29 For example, the forestry and also other sectors that are related to a volume.
02:34 Okay.
02:35 Right, right.
02:36 So, yes.
02:37 So, your organization aims to educate people about the importance of reducing carbon emissions.
02:44 So, tell us why is it important?
02:46 Okay.
02:47 Like you said before that, Indonesia is now gaining momentum for energy transition,
02:52 and our community, Generasi Energi Bersih or Clean Energy Generation, is at the forefront for these issues.
03:01 We adopt the scientific knowledge for the carbon reduction.
03:13 Yes.
03:14 And also we involve anyone from students and also professionals, and even retirees to join our community,
03:22 and reduce emission from daily basis.
03:25 So, in your opinion, how educated our general public regarding the importance of reaching net zero emission
03:33 as targeted by the Indonesian government, and also like all countries around the world,
03:39 they have pledged their own target, right?
03:42 So, actually, we believe that the interest is there, the spirit is there, what they lack is the know-how,
03:49 and the second thing is the strategic activity that they should take to advocate the reduction of their emission.
03:57 For example, we say in individual level, they did not know as simple as we just turn off the LED lamp in our house,
04:08 or choosing a different mode of transportation, actually reducing their own emissions bit by bit.
04:14 So, imagine if all Indonesian people are 200 million more, reduce their own emission bit by bit, it actually will be huge.
04:24 And other things that will be more central is how this individual, or in case the GenB community can actually advocate
04:33 to the government, or even national, or even sub-national government level,
04:38 that they can more strategically reduce emission through their policies.
04:41 Okay, so we have QR code on our wall, what can we learn from this, and maybe we can make use of this information as well,
04:50 maybe you can explain it to us?
04:52 Yeah, so actually we just know, we say that Indonesians have high spirits,
04:58 and this is provided to you, freely, to akademi.transitionenergy.id, to learn more on how actually we can move,
05:09 so this is like a learning platform, just like Udemy, but focuses on energy transition issues.
05:14 For example, the fossil energy, the renewable energy, and what is the urgency of us to move to renewable energy or clean energy.
05:24 And this is the different QR code, this is jijakcarbongo.id, this one is like the entry point on how we can calculate
05:34 our own emissions individually in a daily basis, for example from our food, from our transportation,
05:40 or even from our electricity use in household from day to day activities.
05:44 Okay, so becoming more mindful to the environment.
05:48 True, that's true.
05:49 So I've seen a lot of these carbon calculators in the internet,
05:54 and what makes jijakcarbongo.id different from other carbon calculators, especially the ones that also operate in Indonesia?
06:03 Okay, from jijakcarbongo.id, different yet from other calculators,
06:08 is actually jijakcarbongo.id is curated for Indonesian context like lifestyle,
06:14 and also public transportation and energy options.
06:18 And we are not only calculating, but also motivating others to choose the energy consumption wisely.
06:27 Okay, so this is a great initiative from GenBee, of course.
06:32 And what other supports that you receive maybe from the stakeholders or other organizations?
06:38 Can you elaborate more on that?
06:40 Actually, the first step when I started or initiated GenBee,
06:45 we provide the first thing is actually the know-how or the expertise in this topic.
06:52 So we try to have a small workshop on power sector issues, on waste issues,
06:58 or even in transportation and industry issues.
07:01 We believe that by this knowledge, they can further their advocacy or their campaign e-vote
07:08 to achieve each GenBee chapter's goals.
07:12 And the second thing is we also provide the networking.
07:16 For example, the ISL itself actually can have already dialogue with, for example, Energy Council,
07:23 National Energy Council, or even the House of Representatives,
07:27 or even across a relationship with Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
07:32 So actually, we want GenBee to actually have audience, public audience, with this stakeholder
07:39 to directly voice their aspiration or voice their idea on how the community can also take part in just energy transitions.
07:48 Right, so it is indeed a lot of steps need to be done in order for Indonesia to reach net zero emission by 2060.
07:57 So according to your organization, what is the next steps,
08:02 what is in the future plans for both IESR and also for GenBee in order to reach this net goal of 2060, net zero emission?
08:13 From IESR, we believe that we actually have studies in our pipeline,
08:21 and also already published studies that strongly suggest Indonesian government to retire their coal-fired power plant or CFPP.
08:32 Because the CFPP is actually the highest emission from all other industries.
08:38 This includes the electricity that is by industry or even the electricity that is by EV.
08:44 All of them is generated mostly by the CFPP.
08:47 So we strongly support governments and also maybe give our study for them to implement which CFPP that should be retired first.
08:58 This is actually a very technical process and maybe take a long time.
09:02 And also there are the low aspect of this on how the CFPP operator actually can shoot Indonesian government back
09:10 if they didn't want to shut their power plant down.
09:14 So what are the next steps that you're wishing to do in the future?
09:19 So actually we already assess the MEMR on how we identify this CFPP.
09:27 And also parallel with that, we actually also encourage the global diplomacy and climate
09:36 on how we can attract other funders or international donors to support.
09:41 For example, like 3 to 6 months ago, the JPP narrative or JPP ideas,
09:48 this is like investment plan to help Indonesians move to clean energy is proposed.
09:54 So we actually want to gather international support too for Indonesian government to achieve this transition process.
10:02 From GenB perspective, we are planning to expand our online presence with more advanced topic
10:10 and possibly with virtual reality.
10:13 And also for the offline presence, we are planning to increase our project with the community funded project
10:22 in 15 cities in Indonesia and also supported by ESR of course.
10:27 So if people want to know more about GenB, where can they find more information or read you guys on social media maybe?
10:35 Yes, we have the social media, Generasi Energi Bersih and website.
10:40 The website is transisienergi.id. You can find everything from that website.
10:47 Right, right, right. So I think that concludes our interview for today.
10:54 So thank you very much for coming into the studio and sharing with us, viewers at home,
11:00 that Indonesia is able to reach net zero emission by 2060 with of course ourself. Right?
11:09 So start from us, like being more mindful about the carbon that we produce or make in our daily activity.
11:17 Thank you so much Irwan and Maya for joining us today in the studio.
11:21 And now we are set for a commercial break. When we return, we'll bring you the world headlines.
11:26 So stay with us.
