An alarming number of pertussis or whooping cough cases have been found in various cities in the Philippines, with many declaring it an outbreak.

Pertussis is a contagious respiratory disease with flu-like symptoms that can be transmitted through coughing or sneezing.

00:05 The biggest metropolis in the Philippines, Quezon City was the first to announce
00:09 a pertussis outbreak on March 21st, with infants and
00:12 toddlers making up the majority of the casualties.
00:15 >> We have unprecedented number of cases this year,
00:19 so we're coming from a zero case on the same period last year.
00:24 And then of course the deaths, so at the time of the declaration,
00:28 we have received already four deaths.
00:30 That's actually triggers our declaration of the outbreak.
00:34 >> On March the 25th, Cavite's provincial health office reported 36 cases,
00:39 and by the 27th, the city of Cavite had declared an outbreak.
00:42 Meanwhile in Cebu City,
00:45 the local health authority has refrained from declaring an outbreak despite
00:48 three casualties.
00:49 The head of the city health department, Dr.
00:52 Daisy Villa, has confirmed 13 cases, with 24 more suspected.
00:58 Since January, a total of 568 cases of the outbreak has been recorded,
01:03 with reports of 40 deaths.
01:04 As of March the 10th to 16th,
01:07 the Department of Health has recorded 28 new cases of pertussis.

01:14 where only 26 cases were recorded during the same period.
