00:00 Welcome back to the Sea Morning Show.
00:04 As promised, we have our second talk show of the morning.
00:08 And I don't know about you folks at home, but here in Jakarta especially, Hans, the
00:13 weather has been a little hot and cold.
00:15 Yeah, it's kind of like very fluctuating.
00:19 It's very hot and dry one second and the next it's pouring rain.
00:24 I haven't been washing my car for like two weeks now.
00:27 Because there's no point.
00:28 Three weeks.
00:29 You're still washing the car itself.
00:31 Now the majority of provinces in Indonesia are also predicted to be hit by moderate to
00:37 heavy rain in the middle of the season transitional period.
00:43 The National Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency stated that currently
00:49 most of the regions, especially the southern part of Indonesia, are entering the season
00:54 transitional period from the rainy season to dry season.
01:00 After last week's hot spell, especially in Greater Jakarta, extreme weather is predicted
01:05 to return.
01:06 That is right.
01:07 And the agency also encourages holiday travelers to be cautious and alert during the Sears
01:15 to Ede homecoming period as extreme weather is expected to occur in a number of regions.
01:31 And to know more on the weather updates, we are now joined by Senior Forecaster from the
01:36 agency, Agita Fifi.
01:39 Good morning, Agita Fifi.
01:40 Good morning, Hans.
01:41 Thank you so much for joining us here in the studio.
01:45 So Indonesia, especially in Greater Jakarta, has experienced a season transitional period
01:51 lately from hot weather to the heavy rain in just hours, now accompanied by heavy lightning
01:57 and strong wind.
01:59 And to be even more detailed, what's the weather forecast like for the upcoming week?
02:06 Okay, so we experience this fluctuating and really dynamic of the weather in most of Indonesia.
02:15 But in Jakarta itself, we experience like this gloomy morning.
02:21 Exactly.
02:22 Yes.
02:23 Actually, in Indonesia right now, the equatorial roast bee is in active condition.
02:28 So in Sumatra, Java, and most of Kalimantan, we'll experience like severe weather, maybe
02:36 in the several days ahead.
02:37 But in Sulawesi, Bali, and then Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku, and Papua, it will last rainy
02:46 days in the first several days of this week.
02:49 But it will also increase the rainfall maybe in the last weeks.
02:56 Later on.
02:57 Yes, later on, like maybe five days later.
03:02 Because the weather is like a moving pattern, a heavy moving pattern.
03:06 Yes, that's right.
03:07 Because it's usually already rainy in the places that Mafifi have mentioned.
03:12 But right now, it's still pretty dry.
03:13 In fact, you mentioned Bali as well, Mafifi.
03:17 When we were in Bali two weeks ago, my fiancé actually ended up in the ER due to heat exhaustion.
03:26 Because he was riding the motorbike and surfing the whole day, and apparently wasn't drinking
03:31 enough fluids.
03:32 So he almost fainted really because of the weather.
03:37 Now with that being said, we are entering the Ramadan month, people are doing eat homecoming
03:43 soon.
03:44 What advice would you have for these people who will be traveling outside?
03:50 And some people are even going to be traveling on motorbikes without any coverage.
03:57 Right now we are in Ramadan, and most of people in Indonesia are fasting.
04:01 So it's very important to fulfill our water requirement.
04:06 Maybe during the evening or at night, drink as much water as you can so that you can still
04:12 fulfill your daily needs.
04:13 And as for the people who are traveling, just make sure to choose the safe transportation.
04:23 Actually it's not recommended to use a motorcycle to travel long journey.
04:27 But maybe there's no other option, so that motorcycle maybe just, yeah, we can just go
04:35 with it.
04:36 But make sure you check the weather condition before that, and just prepare your coat, prepare
04:41 your umbrella, and be careful of slippery roads.
04:45 Yes.
04:46 Yes, and that's it.
04:47 So basically be ready for anything that will come, and also do all the preventive measures.
04:54 So Bafifi, just confirming, so now Indonesia is moving towards the rainy season, from hot
05:01 to rainy season, or rainy to hot season?
05:04 Actually in Indonesia we have two seasons, rainy season and dry season.
05:09 And in this March, usually we are moving from rainy season to dry season.
05:15 But you know, Indonesia is so large, so it's not right just to generalize everything.
05:23 But mostly, yes, we are moving from rainy season to dry season.
05:27 Now during this transitional period, or in Indonesian we call it pancaroba, we saw a
05:35 lot of effects following this transitional period, like we saw a lot of dengue fever
05:44 cases and stuff like that.
05:46 And also people are actually experiencing some difficulties on the road with the fluctuating
05:53 rain and also heat.
05:56 But when will the situation be returned to normal during this season?
06:03 And also, does weather change only happen in Indonesia?
06:07 Because in the previous El Nino affected dry season last year, we saw not only Indonesia
06:15 being affected but also some other parts of the world too.
06:19 For this particular time, does it only happen in Indonesia?
06:22 So actually, let me make the chronological order first.
06:26 Oh yes, please.
06:27 Yes, okay.
06:28 So starting from the end of February, actually Indonesia in general, and greater Jakarta
06:33 as well, is experiencing severe weather due to some phenomena like MGO, equatorial frost
06:39 and we have three tropical cyclone infestations at the time in the south of Indonesia.
06:45 So these all phenomena combine together and lead to severe weather in most of Indonesia
06:52 at the period.
06:53 And then we have like this surprise period where the weather is kind of fair, sunny condition
07:00 and lack of rain for several days.
07:03 We have this condition in this March.
07:05 And then we have this different weather pattern again, sunny in the morning and rainy in the
07:11 afternoon maybe lead to thunderstorm, strong wind or maybe putting bloom.
07:16 We also have that kind of weather.
07:18 But actually, this pattern that I see lately is quite common in tropical countries.
07:26 Because in tropical countries, we have two fundamental sources of weather, the sun radiation
07:32 and the water vapor because we are in waters.
07:35 So we have a lot of waters and we have a lot of sun radiation.
07:38 So it's very easy for Indonesia to experience this kind of weather pattern.
07:45 And it's also common in other tropical countries as well.
07:49 But in Indonesia, because we have waters, so the confective or the strength of the clouds
07:57 that form, it's quite strong.
07:59 So I think that's what makes it very significant in Indonesia.
08:05 And does it only happen in Indonesia or also some areas in the region?
08:10 Also the other area, maybe in tropical country, especially because in higher latitude, they
08:17 will have less solar radiation.
08:19 I see.
08:20 So probably the follow up question would be here in Jakarta, I don't know in other provinces,
08:25 but here in Jakarta, we did experience some local rain.
08:30 I mean, in one area, let's say I live in Kemang.
08:34 But next door where I am.
08:35 But next door where you live, around in Pondok in the area, might not be raining.
08:41 Even though it's in the south.
08:42 Even though we're actually adjacent to each other.
08:45 So how is that situation being explained, Mbappé?
08:50 Yes, that's mainly caused by the local weather pattern.
08:57 We have this, as I said before, we have this like confective activity in the tropics.
09:04 We have a lot of solar radiation and then we have significant relative humidity in the
09:10 atmosphere.
09:11 So it will be very easy for the air to rise up.
09:15 Right.
09:16 And it will form clouds.
09:19 And it can happen very local and sporadic.
09:23 So maybe two kilometers ahead, there's rain, heavy rainfall, but maybe two kilometers behind,
09:29 it's not raining at all.
09:30 So this kind of condition is very normal.
09:34 Very normal.
09:35 Okay, very normal.
09:36 It's not...
09:37 I've always wondered, how does that work?
09:40 How is my car being like so wet, getting into one area?
09:45 The street is so dry.
09:47 Exactly, you would drive into an area and you see all the other cars are dry and yours
09:52 is the only wet one.
09:54 But I mean, seeing the pattern, Mbappé, if you can see that when it's dry, it's very
09:59 hot, but when it rains, it pours here, right?
10:02 Now, when it rains very hard, it obviously causes very severe flooding, as we have seen
10:08 in numerous parts here, at least in Jakarta, where we are.
10:11 But aside from floods, is there any other effects of weather change that we should be
10:15 aware of?
10:16 Yes, actually, according to the National Disaster Management Authorities, BNPB, there are several
10:25 hazards that we need to be aware of.
10:27 The first one is the extreme weather.
10:30 Actually, extreme weather is various, from heavy rainfall and then strong winds, thunderstorms,
10:35 and also putting bloom.
10:38 And then we also have a set of floods, landslides, landslides as secondary hazards.
10:45 And also this storm surge, but storm surge is mostly in the coastline area, where the
10:50 waves become higher as the cumulonimbus clouds.
10:55 Okay, so the coastal area might be on the northern coastal, as we call it, Pantura,
11:02 and then the southern coast in Java, and also some other parts of Indonesia along the coastal
11:10 line.
11:11 So, BNPB, before we say goodbye to you, what should we do to anticipate weather change?
11:17 Not only here in Jakarta, because we're in a big city, but also in general in Indonesia?
11:24 Okay, as for the weather change that happens every day, the diurnal cycle, which mostly
11:32 leads to health issues.
11:34 We need to just take more vitamins, just make sure that we fulfill our water requirement.
11:43 And then, on the other side, we also need to be prepared for the hydrometeorological
11:50 hazards that can be caused by this easily changing weather, like floods.
11:55 We need to make sure that our environment is safe and ready if there is a lot of rain
12:02 coming, because in this March, or this month, or maybe last February, we experienced the
12:11 highest rainfall observed in Indonesia.
12:15 It's almost reached 400 millimeters for 24 hours.
12:19 Wait, 400 millimeters for 24 hours, which normally would be?
12:26 We will say that heavy rainfall is more than 50 millimeters for 24 hours.
12:32 So, that's like, I don't know, eightfold?
12:35 Yes.
12:36 Eightfold, wow.
12:37 Wow.
12:38 And that was in Sumatra, and we also experienced the rainfall more than 200 millimeters for
12:46 24 hours in Jakarta, maybe some days ago, and also in Semarang.
12:52 So we need to be careful of those kinds of rainfall.
12:55 Alright, so remember what Matfifi just said, it's actually also health-related.
13:02 Get your vitamin, vitamin C, D, E, multivitamins.
13:06 If you're at my age, you have to get ginkgo biloba and glucosamine, because of my, my
13:10 joints are actually now starting to, you know, squeaking.
13:14 Okay, Matfifi, thank you so much for being here, and also feed us with more knowledge
13:24 about weather forecasts and conditions, and also some preventive measures.
13:29 Thank you so much.
13:30 We are going for a quick break.
13:32 After this, Archie will return with a recap from the water sports.
13:35 Do not go anywhere.
