00:00 (truck engine rumbling)
00:03 - Welcome back to another episode of Getting the Upper Land.
00:13 I'm livestock editor, Rebecca Naj.
00:16 Making news this week, a supermarket inquiry hearing
00:20 was held in Orange on Tuesday,
00:22 where producers said some of the prices they received
00:25 did not even cover the cost of production.
00:28 Senate committee member, Ross Cadell,
00:31 said the inquiry was an important step in bringing change.
00:34 - I hope we get real change, some real teeth in the ACCC.
00:38 The grocery code become mandated,
00:40 divestiture actually legislated as a recommendation
00:42 so that the big guys can be cut up
00:44 if they continue to breach the rules,
00:46 and some power back into the farmers,
00:48 back into rural communities.
00:50 - In the states north, there's a trend of water
00:52 becoming more valuable than land.
00:55 There's been a few examples, including the December 22 sale
00:59 of Carson's, an irrigated property in Weewar.
01:03 The sale price was 22.2 million,
01:06 but the water on the property was valued at 18 million.
01:10 Australia's red meat exports continue to rise
01:14 and saw a significant jump last month.
01:17 Figures show beef exports to Japan climbed 43%
01:21 from February, 2023 to February, 2024.
01:26 Over the same period, exports to the US climbed 83%
01:30 year on year, while exports to China lifted 26%.
01:35 Producers have been told of the importance
01:39 of managing pH levels in soil
01:41 at a field day held at Karoo Angus.
01:44 Researchers said older practices of using lime
01:47 only when there was a visible problem
01:49 was no longer considered best practice.
01:52 - However, I think the main take home message
01:54 from all of this is, if you've got acidity,
01:56 you've got aluminium, please start addressing it now.
01:59 Otherwise, it's gonna be the next generation
02:01 that's going to be attending to this,
02:02 and they may have more financial constraints
02:05 and finer margins than we've got now.
02:07 - Coming up, wiener sales have kicked off
02:10 and we'll be bringing you all the results.
02:13 Plus, we'll have boots on the ground in Sydney Royal,
02:16 which starts next week.
02:18 Our wiener, Sir Andrew Norris,
02:19 will be at the Ag Show's New South Wales
02:21 Young Woman Dinner on Wednesday
02:23 to kick off a massive two weeks in Sydney.
02:27 But now, it's time for the real star of this show, Oxley.
02:32 - Who the hell's Oxley?
02:34 Ha ha ha, thank you, Rebecca, you are too kind.
02:40 You mentioned Sydney Royal,
02:41 and personally, Oxley cannot wait.
02:44 It always provides good fodder for the column
02:47 and Oxley's little birds will once again be in attendance
02:50 to pass on any noteworthy happenings from the show.
02:54 But this week, just like Taylor Swift fans,
02:58 one of Oxley's farm-mad family friends
03:01 had an equally nerve-wracking wait
03:03 for the newest Nike tread.
03:05 While it might not seem that sought after,
03:07 when she readied herself at the computer
03:09 for the 7pm launch,
03:11 it took just one second for the opportunity to be lost.
03:15 Oxley here's Dunlop volleys are still available
03:18 in large quantities for a pinch of the price.
03:21 Now they just have to shake it off.
03:25 Until next week, toodaloo.
