01:20 So we wear our best costume to attend a party.
01:24 But it is not a party that you used to know,
01:26 like a birthday party or a wedding party.
01:29 This party is being celebrated by all people of Indonesia.
01:33 We're going to attend the Democratic Party.
01:35 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:39 February 14, 2024.
01:43 For some people, it is a regular day.
01:47 But for us Indonesians, it is the day to remember.
01:50 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:59 We will look back on this day for everything
02:01 that will happen to our country in the next five years.
02:06 Today, we choose the leaders and the legislative members,
02:10 shaping our future by giving our votes on the election day.
02:15 Here in the Lumbis Hulo district,
02:18 a remote area in Kalimantan Island, 635 people
02:22 are very enthusiastic about attending the Democratic Party.
02:27 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:30 These people might be contributing a small number,
02:33 only 0.0003% from the total number of 204 million voters.
02:42 But even one voice still has a power.
02:45 The people believe their power is strong enough
02:47 to bring the change.
02:48 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:52 This is not only an evidence.
02:55 This is the pride.
02:56 This is the hope for a better Indonesia
02:58 in the upcoming five years.
03:00 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:04 Lumbis Hulo people have a big expectation
03:08 for the development of their community.
03:11 So what actually they're expecting
03:13 from the future leaders?
03:15 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:19 Lumbis Hulo district is located in Nonokan region,
03:22 sea-north Kalimantan, precisely on the border area
03:26 between Indonesia and Sabah, Malaysia.
03:30 There are 10 villages with around 900 people,
03:33 the majority being Christian and Catholic.
03:36 Did you know, the first time I saw this place,
03:39 it reminded me of New Zealand, where people
03:42 live together with nature.
03:43 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:46 The expanse of green grasses here
03:48 is a runway built in 1978 by the missionaries
03:53 of Indonesian Protestant Christian Church, or GKPE.
03:56 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:59 And the runway is still functional until today.
04:03 But as long as there is no plane about to land,
04:06 the grass field has become a playground
04:09 for the kids and the cows.
04:10 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:16 Here, children love to play.
04:19 It is said that the balance between studying and playing
04:22 is good for their development.
04:24 [MUSIC PLAYING]
04:27 But unfortunately, only elementary and junior high
04:31 school exist with the conditions
04:33 and needing to be concerned about.
04:36 Government assistance is delivered to this district,
04:39 but they need more.

04:47 Sol Siawan, the principal of Lumbis Hulo 001 Elementary
04:51 School, showed us the fragile building structure that can
04:55 harm the safety of the students.

05:42 Related to elementary school, Lumbis Hulo 001 Junior High
05:45 School also faces the same condition.
05:47 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:51 Both schools have to share the space during their teaching
05:54 and learning activities.
05:57 Rudy, as the principal of Lumbis Hulo 001 Junior High School,
06:01 hopes to have their own building with proper supporting
06:05 facilities.

07:03 Margareth, one of Lumbis Hulo residents,
07:05 has been lucky to get a higher education.
07:09 She is now working as a midwife at Lumbis Hulo Auxiliary Health
07:13 Center, allowing her to contribute more to the society.
07:18 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
07:43 Dedicated to her job for the village since 2012,
07:47 Margareth faces many challenges as a midwife
07:50 in a remote area, from the lack of health workers
07:54 to the shortage of drug supplies.

09:05 If a patient's condition worsens and requires
09:08 more advanced medical treatment, Margareth
09:11 will refer the patient to the nearest hospital
09:14 located in Malina Region C.
09:18 It is a long way to go.
09:21 They have two options of transportation, the plane
09:25 and the boat.
09:28 The plane has an inconsistent schedule
09:31 and only departs from Nunnifant District to Lumbis Hulo,
09:34 but not the other way around, while the boat
09:37 has a more flexible schedule, but it
09:39 isn't available every day.
09:43 The plane only carries passengers
09:45 with limited baggage, while the boat
09:48 can carry more passengers and more baggage
09:50 with an extra charge.
09:51 The plane spends around 45 minutes of travel
09:58 with the subsidized price of around 450,000 rupiah
10:03 or 28 US dollars for one trip, while the boat spends
10:08 around six to eight hours of travel from Lumbis Hulo
10:12 to Masalong District, the closest region that can connect
10:15 them to the city.
10:18 The subsidized price is around 200,000 to 300,000 rupiah
10:24 or around 13 to 20 US dollars for one trip.
10:30 However, if the residents have an emergency business
10:33 and no subsidized boat available on that day,
10:38 they need to book the boat, which
10:39 costs up to 4 million rupiah for one trip only.
10:43 And it does apply not only for the health care.
10:52 Lumbis Hulo people need to go to the city
10:54 to access higher education, food stock supplies,
10:58 and many more.
11:02 How about the land transport?
11:04 It hasn't been established yet.
11:05 Panos Langkau, the village head of Tau Lumbis,
11:12 emphasizes the condition.

13:05 As the wise saying goes, life is 10% what happens to you
13:29 and 90% of how you react to it.
13:33 Living within limitations shows how strong they are
13:37 facing challenges that others may not be able to face
13:41 and can still be grateful for what they have.
13:46 But they need leaders who keep promises,
13:50 a promise to hear the voices even in the most remote area,
13:55 promise to take care of them and help them grow.
