Alex Donno and Liam Willerup react to Cam Ward's first practice as a Miami Hurricane.
Transcript
00:00 We had the opportunity to watch the man who is wearing the number one jersey,
00:06 Cam Ward, slinging it, throwing it around the yard for the first time as a Miami Hurricane.
00:12 I have the privilege of being joined by my colleague at allhurricanes.com,
00:16 who is also out at practice along with me and Brian Smith.
00:19 He is the lefty Liam, Liam Willerup.
00:22 So Liam, I'll let you speak first on Cam Ward.
00:26 How closely did you watch him today and what were your early takeaways?
00:30 I mean, you can see the second everyone walked into the practice facility today,
00:34 they were all like, "Where's Cam?"
00:36 You know, they all were following him in the first end zone
00:38 and then moved to him when he was midfield.
00:40 And, you know, there's an aura around him, it seems to be.
00:43 And, you know, not from what we just saw on the field from him,
00:46 but what people had to say in the post-practice availabilities about him.
00:50 It seems like this guy is the real deal.
00:52 You know, had some great passes.
00:55 His receivers made some great catches.
00:57 And, you know, it seems like we might be drinking the Kool-Aid right now
01:00 because this is a talented quarterback
01:02 and it seems like the room is exactly where we want it to be.
01:06 Yeah, like I'm a little bit ADD, so like I was even before I found Ward,
01:11 one of the first things I saw was like two large individuals,
01:15 one who was wearing the number eight.
01:17 And I had to look at my roster that Elijah Arroyo
01:20 has changed numbers from number 80 to number eight.
01:22 We'll talk about him.
01:23 He looked really good out there.
01:26 And I'm not just saying that because he's coming off of serious injuries.
01:29 Regardless of what he's coming back from, he looked really good out there.
01:32 And I also spotted number 15 standing six foot seven freshman quarterback, Judd Anderson.
01:38 So after I was all disoriented about all the number changes
01:42 and then I find Cam Ward out there wearing number one.
01:45 Some of my takeaways today on Ward, you know, you see the strong arm
01:51 that we all expected, like you knew that just from watching him on TV at Washington State.
01:55 But I think everyone was impressed by how he throws into very tight windows.
01:59 Wesley Besaint, who spoke after practice, talked about that.
02:03 That's one of the things that stands out about Ward, the tight windows and the accuracy.
02:07 A couple of those big throws, Liam, that you referenced.
02:10 He had, you know, one of the better plays in the practice.
02:14 And I just want people to know we can only watch like the first seven periods.
02:18 It's about 45, 50 minutes. So we were we got to see some seven on sevens, which is cool.
02:23 We didn't really get to watch like 11 on 11 or whatever the heck they did after
02:26 after we left the room.
02:28 But in seven on sevens, Ward connected deep with number seven, Xavier Restrepo,
02:33 which sign of things to come, I think, on a great deep ball.
02:37 But I don't know how many guys not named Restrepo would have caught it
02:40 because Liam, he had to climb up the ladder and make one of those crazy catches
02:44 that X and few others can make.
02:47 Oh, I couldn't imagine what X like X slash Twitter would be like right now
02:51 if we were able to record during that period, because we couldn't record during that.
02:55 That's right. We can only record during individual drills, not seven on sevens.
02:59 Yeah, exactly. So he went up there and caught that ball.
03:01 And that was just fantastic.
03:03 I mean, it's a connection that we're hoping to see a lot more of.
03:05 Obviously, Restrepo, one of the best returning receivers in the nation
03:09 next coming into this next season.
03:11 So that was exciting to see.
03:12 Love what I saw from Jacoby George picking up right where he left off.
03:15 And looks like Isaiah Horton is going to be the guy to replace Colby Young,
03:19 which I think many of us expected.
03:21 But, you know, we're finally able to see that today in practice.
