Cam Ward tells Alex Donno about his offseason workout regimen, his goals at Miami this season, and how EA Sports didn't quite get him right in the new College Football 25 video game.
Transcript
00:00So I know you're the type of player who never stops practicing football.
00:04A lot of your training sessions with Shador Sanders and
00:07company are out there.
00:09Talk to me about your off-season regimen, what you've been up to.
00:12The biggest thing I've been trying to work on this off-season is staying within
00:16my framework, and that's in the pocket.
00:19In order to get to where I wanna be, you have to be able to win,
00:23it's out the pocket.
00:24The off-platform stuff, the scramble drive, I've been blessed to be able to do that.
00:28So I work it, but not as much as I work at staying inside the pocket and
00:32then staying on balance.
00:34And then that's probably the biggest thing that I've been working with.
00:37My quarterback coach is in with Conrad and Shador, we work with each other.
00:41So it's been good this off-season, we're gonna get some work in.
00:45Actually, Friday, I go back to Houston on Thursday.
00:48We will get some work in the last time for season start time.
00:51Now, all your teammates talk about the trash talk in practice, and
00:54they enjoy your competitiveness.
00:56Who's the best trash talker that goes toe-to-toe with you?
01:02It's really a Nance Cooper, but if it was on the defense,
01:06on the defense, I'd probably say either CJ Clark,
01:11actually Mish Powell, Mish Powell's slowly working his way up there.
01:14But those two guys that I see the most trash talk on defense for sure.
01:20Can you talk about team goals for Miami this coming season?
01:23I feel like the biggest goal for us is obviously winning ACC championships.
01:27Everybody's goal, but I think we really wanna get it done.
01:31We have the roster to get it done.
01:32And all the individual goals will take care of itself.
01:35We win football games, everything you want will take care of itself.
01:38You wanna be a top three round draft pick, win football games.
01:43That's the biggest thing that I'm trying to stretch to myself and
01:46to the team, that we win, everything take care of itself.
01:48But we can't win overnight, it's gonna take week after week after week.
01:53And we just gotta show up every Saturday.
01:55It doesn't matter if we're playing Florida,
01:57it doesn't matter if we're playing an FCS team, Ball State,
02:01it doesn't matter if we're playing Virginia Tech.
02:03We have to be the same team every Saturday, cuz those guys,
02:06they're gonna show up and they're gonna play every game.
02:09Florida's gonna give us our best shot,
02:11Miami's gonna give us their best shot.
02:13We just gotta match each team intensity to us.
02:15Now, you got a couple of new offensive teammates who weren't around for
02:19spring football, Damian Martinez and Sam Brown.
02:23Tell me what you're expecting from these guys.
02:24I'd imagine you probably had a chance to work out with them by now.
02:26Yep, I'm expecting a lot of those guys.
02:29I got a chance to see Damian live twice.
02:33My first year while I was doing last year, when he was at Oregon State,
02:37that guy's the real deal.
02:39He can pick up blitzes, he can run the ball, he can move laterally.
02:43It's different, you don't really see that right now from running back.
02:47So he was a big addition to our office and I'm glad we got him.
02:50And Sam Brown, he's probably our fastest receiver.
02:54He's up there with JG, Chris Johnson's one of the fastest people on the team,
02:58Sam Brown's up there with him.
03:01Sam's gonna be a big, big, I cannot put it, he's gonna be a big stretch for
03:05us just because he's giving us a different aspect.
03:11The way he runs his route, we can move him to slide, we can move him outside.
03:14He catches the ball real well, he's a great over the shoulder catch receiver.
03:19He creates space versus man.
03:21So I'm just excited to get live reps with him in ball camp.
03:26Get him working with me one-on-one at ball camp with the ones,
03:30working him in there.
03:31And he was a big addition for us and I'm happy to throw him some touchdowns this
03:35year.
03:35Now before you decided Miami was the spot for you,
03:38you debated going into the NFL draft.
03:41Why ultimately did you decide to play at Miami for a final year of college?
03:45I never wanted to really leave college, in my opinion.
03:48I love college football, the NFL isn't going anywhere.
03:51But I feel like in order to put myself and my family in position for
03:56a long-term success, I believe, I feel like it was right for me to stay in college.
04:01Cuz first of all, it gave me the opportunity that I wanted from a college,
04:03which was an opportunity to come in, lead the football team, my way of leading.
04:09Let me talk to the guys the way I wanna talk to the guys,
04:12don't really chain me.
04:13He's given me freedom, he's let me express myself the way I wanted to.
04:18I've been blessed to be put in this position,
04:20cuz football is a big part of that.
04:22And I think we have a season, we want everybody to see it.
04:26Have you had a chance to play the new college football video game yet?
04:29Yes, sir, you already know.
04:30Are you good?
04:33I can say I'm pretty good.
04:34I really only played with two teams, that's Miami and Oregon.
04:40Cuz Oregon on there is a cheap code, I'm not gonna cap.
04:44The way they run it wide open, they got some speed over there,
04:48Oregon, they're a cheap code on the game.
04:50So really, they're the only two teams I've been playing with.
04:52Did they get you?
04:53Did they get Cam Ward?
04:54Did they get you right on the game, your rating, your attributes?
04:57How do you feel like you're- No, they blessed me, I can say that.
05:00They blessed me, but they don't have me breaking tackles in the backfield,
05:05like I do in real life.
05:06I'm like, some of it, you gotta get the update.
05:09So I gotta make some more plays during the season,
05:10hopefully they boost me during the season.
05:12Cam, I appreciate it, man.
05:13Welcome to Miami.
05:14Well, we're in Charlotte now, but welcome to Miami, welcome to Charlotte, and
05:18best of luck this season.
05:19Appreciate it.
