00:00 "We will protect every corner of the Philippines from any foreign invaders. This is the bold statement of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in his appearance in the Australian Parliament.
00:13 Here, the President also emphasized the importance of cooperation to protect the peace that is being fought in the region. "
00:21 Alan Francisco, in the center of the news.
00:24 Mr. Speaker, the President of the Republic of the Philippines.
00:31 [Applause]
00:42 Your Excellency President Marcos, on behalf of the Australian Government and indeed the Australian people, it is my very great pleasure to welcome you and the First Lady to our nation's Parliament.
00:57 [Applause]

01:46 All of these further affirm what our two peoples have already forged through many centuries.
01:51 I look back on our shared history to contextualize the role that our respective nations played and continue today to play at this watershed moment.
02:02 Geopolitical polarities and strategic competitions threaten our hard-won peace, even as we remain beset by unresolved inequities and inequalities within and amongst nations.
02:15 Powerful and transformative technologies can destabilize our political and social order. Climate change threatens our very existence.
02:24 [Speaking in Filipino]
02:35 I see the way forward in building on the strong ties that have already been established between our citizens, between our economies, between our governments.
02:45 Today we add a further dimension to that relationship as we address concerns on our security and defense.
02:53 We are called upon once again to join forces, together with our partners, in the face of threats to the rule of law, to stability, and to peace.
03:04 The Philippines-Australia plays a crucial role as one of only two partners with which the Philippines has a visiting forces agreement.
03:15 The formal diplomatic relations of the two nations have been going for 78 years.
03:20 This was confirmed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's visit to the Philippines last year.
03:27 [Speaking in Filipino]
03:50 Once again, we must come together as partners to face the common challenges confronting the region.
03:57 Not one single country can do this by itself. No single force can counter them by themselves.
04:05 This is why our strategic partnership has grown more important than ever.
04:10 We must reinforce each other's strengths. We must protect the peace that we fought for during the war and have jealously guarded in the decades since.
04:19 We must oppose actions that clearly denigrate the rule of law.
04:24 The President of the Philippines and Australia gave a statement in defense of sovereignty.
04:31 Here, President Marcos once again stated that the government will not allow any country to take the territory of the Philippines.
04:42 I shall never tire of repeating the declaration that I made from the first day that I took office.
04:49 I will not allow any attempt by any foreign power to take even one square inch of our sovereign territory.
04:59 We have an abiding interest in keeping our seas free and open and in ensuring unimpeded passage and freedom of navigation.
05:08 We must uphold, preserve, and defend the unified and universal character of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea as the Constitution of the Oceans.
05:20 We draw strength from the consistent and unequivocal support of Australia and the international community for the lawful exercise of our rights which have been settled under international law.
05:35 The President also thanked Prime Minister Alvarez for his personal commitment to a world without nuclear weapons.
05:43 President Marcos also emphasized the issue of climate change in his speech.
05:48 Multilateralism is needed to address this issue.
05:52 He also pointed out the government's action in advancing sustainable and inclusive energy transition towards carbon neutrality.
06:01 Our past successes should inspire us to forge ahead in building the future to which we aspire.
06:08 For the Philippines, we continue to see that future in our identity as Asians and as members of the Pacific family.
06:16 Together with our Asian neighbors, and in that group I include Australia, we continue to work for a regional community that empowers all of our citizens.
06:27 Before his speech, the President mentioned the people-to-people relationship between the Philippines and Australia.
06:36 In fact, thousands of Australians chose to work and live in the Philippines.
06:42 And thousands of Filipinos are studying, working, and living in Australia.
06:48 My expectations under the leadership of our President, Bongbong Marcos, is hope, a positive change for our country,
07:02 improvement that will give every Filipino the hope of having a good life.
07:11 I believe that if we were able to do this in Australia, we would know how to follow the law,
07:19 we would have a good life, why not do this in the Philippines?
07:24 Meanwhile, during the joint press conference between President Marcos and Prime Minister Alvanese,
07:30 the Philippines and Australia discussed defense, maritime cooperation, and non-traditional security concerns.
07:39 Also, trade and investments, development cooperation, multilateral collaboration, and people-to-people linkages.
07:47 The three agreements exchanged today shall enhance information sharing, capability building,
07:53 and interoperability between our relevant government agencies in the maritime domain and maritime environment,
08:01 cyber and critical technology, and competition law.
08:05 Well, Australia sees the Philippines as a central player and a crucial partner for us in Southeast Asia.
08:12 So it's great to welcome you here today on your first official visit to Australia as President of the Philippines.
08:20 And it was a special honor to host you for your historic address to Parliament.
08:26 Australia is honored to count the Philippines as a close friend and strategic partner.
08:32 President Marcos also attended the success of the Special Summit to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Australia Dialogue Relations next Sunday.
08:41 Alan Francisco for Pamansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
