00:00Some fishermen from China were harassed by the police in the West Philippine Sea.
00:07Meanwhile, the Philippine Coast Guard was called to protect the fishermen.
00:13This is the story of Bien Manalo, live.
00:20You're right, Ma'am.
00:21The Philippine Coast Guard called to protect the fishermen in the West Philippine Sea.
00:32Meanwhile, the National Security Council called for the Philippines to stop harassing its allies.
00:40This is despite China's continued aggression in the disputed territory.
00:46Just last July, Robert Mundoñedo was harassed by a fisherman in the Subic Sambales Sea,
00:55which is 60 nautical miles away from Bajo de Masinloc, a part of the West Philippine Sea.
01:02The Chinese Maritime Militia vessel was attacked while they were on a boat.
01:08My brother is resting.
01:11I didn't expect that a ship would come.
01:16It was close, Sir.
01:17We couldn't avoid it.
01:20Maybe we were already trapped.
01:22Then my brother, Sir, ran to the port of the boat.
01:27I thought he was still there.
01:28My second look, he was gone.
01:30He spent three days and three nights in the sea.
01:35Robert Mundoñedo said that his captains were not only fishermen.
01:40He was almost starving and dehydrated when he found his comrades.
01:47But until now, he still hasn't found his brother.
01:51I was thinking, Sir, maybe it's not the right time to be gone.
01:56I was just thinking of surviving.
01:58For the sake of our family.
02:00For the sake of our Coast Guard.
02:02If there is hope, we can go to my brother.
02:10Like Robert, Saldi Solera also experienced harassment from China
02:15when he bombed the water of the Chinese Coast Guard ship,
02:18their boat in Bajo de Masinloc in Zambales in 2021.
02:23This is the first time he experienced the so-called incident
02:27in more than three decades of fishing in the area.
02:30And with the strength of the boat, the tank they were using to cook even splashed into the sea.
02:35China Coast Guard was avoiding us.
02:37What I heard from them was, no peacing, no peacing.
02:43We couldn't do anything. We left.
02:46We were still trapped.
02:48We were trapped by two Chinese Coast Guard ships.
02:51We were trapped. We were exhausted.
02:54Our boats were damaged.
02:56Even so, they continued to fish and fish in one of the disputed territories.
03:03That's our territory.
03:05That's really ours. We should fight for it.
03:07Because it's ours.
03:09But despite the harassment from China,
03:12the Philippine Coast Guard assured that they will continue to fight
03:17and protect the rights of our fishermen.
03:20There's a reason why we are reaching out to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources
03:24for us to have complementing efforts.
03:26In the event that we don't have a Coast Guard vessel in Bajo de Masinloc,
03:30then BFAR can take over.
03:33And then at the same time, if they don't have one,
03:35the Coast Guard will also be there to protect the rights of our fishermen.
03:39More than 100 fishermen from the fishing communities of Subica, Santa Cruz, and Masinloc, Zambales
03:47have received assistance such as food packs and financial assistance.
03:51The two-day Congress of Fishermen for Peace and Prosperity
03:57held in Subic Municipal Gymnasium today.
04:00Some government agencies were happy.
04:03The Basic Life Support Training was also held.
04:06I am thankful to the government agencies and local governments.
04:13This is a big help for us fishermen.
04:16The National Security Council explained that it is not yet time for the Philippines
04:21to lend to its allies.
04:23But they are also looking at the possibility of renting vessels
04:27as an additional force in the West Philippine Sea.
04:30We are not yet in a situation where we need to have escorts, for example, in the United States.
04:35But a decision was made to have a Joint Coast Guard Patrol.
04:39We are already studying this because it will speed up the addition of our assets
04:45because we will just be renting.
04:50The government will continue to monitor the information dissemination campaign
04:55led by the Philippine Information Agency
04:58to attract our fellow Filipinos to our fight in the West Philippine Sea.
05:03And from here in Subic, Zambales, back to you, Ma'am.
05:07Thank you very much, Bian Manalo.
