00:00Good afternoon on a Tuesday without tacos to munch on, but instead a piece of positive
00:10news you could sink your teeth into.
00:13While it has been the bane of many a country's economic ruin coming out of the pandemic,
00:19the Marcos Jr.'s administration has managed to navigate the financial straits as a tad
00:24or a lot better than most of its allies in the region.
00:28In today's Presidential Communications Office Presser, one of the president's top technocrat
00:33or economic managers waxed optimistic today on the government's management of inflation,
00:40saying the 4.4 percent inflation in July, then 3.3 percent last month, could still drop
00:47as low as 2.5 percent for the month of September.
00:51And though he added the inflation rate would pick up in the last quarter of this year as
00:55a result of increased consumer spending and higher prices on seasonal products, the full
01:01year's inflation would still average at 3.4 percent, thereabouts.
01:05With the president, insofar as inflation is concerned, and the good news is that inflation
01:12is on a downward trend.
01:15Last year inflation was about 6.1 percent, today we're roughly at 3.3 percent.
01:20We expect inflation to go down to 2.5 percent by September.
01:24And most importantly, I think we have enough rice and ham for Christmas.
01:32Less than 120 days are left in his time as the leader of the free world and most powerful
01:37man on the planet.
01:39In less than two weeks, the first year anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel that left 1,200
01:45Jews and foreign nationals dead will be up.
01:48Tomorrow, POTUS Joe Biden will address United Nations General Assembly for the last time.
01:54The speech will focus on the top agenda of U.S. foreign policy, a ceasefire to the Gaza
02:00war and releasing all the remaining hostages from Hamas captivity, and keeping Ukraine
02:06in the fight against Russia in their ongoing war.
02:09And though Biden will receive a warm welcome and applause in his valedictory address for
02:14rebuilding alliances that scarred in the time of his predecessor, there can be no celebrating
02:20on his Gaza policy that has completely fallen short of its objectives, and even on the Ukraine,
02:26which continues to struggle to keep its resistance against Russia moving forward for not getting
02:32the weapons it needs on time.
02:34Then again, outgoing POTUS Joe Biden has more to celebrate for achievements in his foreign
02:39policy than the misses or failures.
02:43And worse, world leaders and or their representatives in tomorrow's UN assembly are on edge on
02:50another Trump presidency that could scuttle all the best laid plans and programs established
02:56between the United States and its partners and allies.
03:01And news media in Afghanistan are among the least free on the planet.
03:05Still, media students are keen to learn more about the trade amid Taliban restrictions.
03:11The UAE's Afghan service narrates the story.
03:14In this classroom in Kabul, Afghanistan, a new generation of journalists is learning
03:19about media.
03:21But students at the Uaisal Education Center are starting their careers at a difficult
03:25time for the industry.
03:27They say restrictions by the country's Taliban government make it difficult for them to pursue
03:31their passion, a career in journalism.
03:34They also want experience working at the country's remaining newsrooms.
03:40There are restrictions on media.
03:41We want these restrictions to be removed.
03:43Second, we request media organizations to provide us with the opportunity to work to
03:48become familiar with working in studios.
03:52Othmanzai and his fellow students are starting out in journalism under dire conditions.
03:57Since the Taliban's return to power in 2021, media have worked under increasing censorship
04:03and economic hardships.
04:05Amidst a vibrant media scene, Afghanistan is now the third worst country for press freedom,
04:11ranking below North Korea and Iran, according to media watchdog Reporters Without Borders.
04:17Still, teachers at Uaisal Education Center say that their students are still passionate
04:23about journalism.
04:26They hope they will be able to work one day in the media.
04:28The restrictions and problems will not be there forever.
04:32Uaisal Center may have students, but none are women.
04:35The Taliban banned women from education after primary school level, and dozens of female
04:40journalists can no longer work in media.
04:43Those who do must appear fully covered on screen.
04:46Rahima Naimi is a former lecturer of journalism at Rana University in Kabul.
04:51She says journalism was a popular field of study before the Taliban's return.
04:58There were many women in higher education, particularly in journalism.
05:02There were many students dreaming of graduating and taking part in the field.
05:06Women in Afghanistan still take online classes in journalism that Naimi and some organizations
05:11offer from outside Afghanistan's borders.
05:14But even with the training, fewer jobs remain.
05:17Dozens of media outlets have shuttered since the takeover.
05:22Unfortunately, media outlets can't create jobs anymore because of economic problems.
05:27Media personnel have decreased.
05:29The solution is that the international community should help the media financially so they
05:33can employ these educated and passionate youth.
05:36While the country's media grapples with a tough environment, the next generation of
05:41journalists is learning the skills they need in the hope that restrictions will ease.
