NSW Police find two bodies in Bungonia, near Goulburn

Police say they're confident they've found the remains of missing Sydney couple Jesse Baird and Luke Davies. New South Wales detectives have set up a crime scene at a property at Bungonia near Goulburn in the southern tablelands. It comes after an "almost week-long search" for the men's bodies.

00:00 Hey, Joe.
00:02 This most recent crime scene that was set up in the Bungonia area is the second scene
00:06 in that region.
00:07 It's about a two-hour drive south or southwest of Sydney.
00:11 Earlier today, the search area was also expanded to include parts of the Royal National Park
00:15 in Sydney's south, but that area around Bungonia seemed to be a pretty major focus.
00:20 Yesterday, police divers spent about four hours scouring dams at a property in that
00:25 region, and officers searched surrounding farmland.
00:28 But police a short time ago told us that they believe they have found two bodies in that
00:33 area at a second location.
00:35 They said that second location is about a 20-minute drive from the first Bungonia property,
00:40 and they've told us this afternoon that they are confident they found the bodies of Luke
00:44 Davies and Jessie Baird.
00:46 Now this major development comes about a week after the couple was last seen in Sydney.
00:51 Police Constable Bo Lamar Condon has been charged with two counts of murder, and he
00:55 remains in custody.
00:57 Police have told us that they will allege that he was the sole person responsible, and
01:01 they told us this afternoon that Bo Lamar Condon has assisted them with the location
01:05 of the bodies.
01:06 They say that they also discovered two surf bags as part of the investigation, and that
01:12 both bodies were found near a fence line of that property where a crime scene has been
01:17 set up.
01:18 And Jessie and Luke's families have been told about this?
01:21 They have, yeah.
01:22 Before today, police had told us that the priority really was to find the bodies, not
01:25 only for an evidentiary point of view, but also for the sake of the families who have
01:29 obviously been waiting for some answers.
01:32 Now police have told us that they have informed the Baird and Davies families, and their focus,
01:37 they say now, will be working through that crime scene and really providing answers over
01:42 the coming hours of days about the circumstances of what they allege happened around these
01:47 deaths.
01:48 Let's have a listen now to what Police Commissioner Karen Webb had to say a short time ago.
01:52 Very relieved because of the families.
01:56 I've spoken to both families.
01:58 They've arrived from interstate.
02:00 They've been waiting for news.
02:02 And each day, each hour was an agonising wait.
02:06 So I'm relieved for the families.
02:09 As the officer in charge has said, and the detectives have said, we've been working around
02:14 the clock on this for the families to find Luke and Jessie, and I'm pleased that we've
02:21 found them.
02:22 Of course it's tragic, an awful circumstance.
02:26 But I think that as a parent, and I know when I spoke to Luke's mum, that's what parents
02:33 want.
02:34 They want to know where their children are.
02:36 Now police will allege in court that a police pistol was used as a murder weapon.
02:40 It's also going to be alleged by police that a white van was hired last Monday, and it
02:45 was driven to the Bungonia area in the days after the alleged murders.
02:50 Now that van and also its movements have really been quite central to the entire investigation.
02:55 This investigation began last Wednesday with the discovery of bloodied clothing at a skip
03:00 bin in Cronulla in Sydney South.
03:02 But since then it has moved to cover a massive area of New South Wales.
03:07 It's spanned from places in Sydney, like the crime scene at Jessie Baird's home in Paddington
03:11 in the eastern suburbs.
03:13 They headed right up to Newcastle to the north of Sydney, and now two hours south to Bungonia.
03:18 So it really has been quite a wide area they've been looking in.
03:22 Bola Markondon appeared in court for the first time on Friday, and he'll reappear in court
03:26 in April.
