Govt asked to stop reclamation in Manila Bay, parts of PH
Members of the Pangisda Pilipinas, an alliance of small-scale and subsistence fishermen, stage a rally in front of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Central Office in Quezon City on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024 to call on the government to put a stop on the continued reclamation activities in Manila Bay and in other parts of the Philippines. They also protested Vietnam's reclamation of islands and reefs in the Spratlys covered by the Philippines' exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and poaching in these areas. They said the ongoing reclamation projects and use of cyanide and dynamite to catch fish accelerate the destruction of marine resources and plunge the fishing sector further into poverty and hunger.
