Alex Donno weighs the pros and cons as to whether Miami should pursue UCLA quarterback Dante Moore in the transfer portal.
Transcript
00:00 I got some pros and cons on Dante Moore.
00:02 And just for reference, this is somebody that Miami recruited, right?
00:05 Moore was class of 2023, was the top quarterback in that class.
00:09 I watched him throw in bombs left and right in the Under Armour
00:12 All-American game last year.
00:14 He's sensational.
00:15 A top recruited quarterback out of high school.
00:18 He was committed briefly, well actually he was committed for a while to Oregon.
00:21 And then shortly before National Signing Day, he flipped to UCLA.
00:26 But Miami was heavily involved in his recruitment.
00:28 Unfortunately for Miami, Miami seemed to have prioritized Jaden
00:32 Rashada over Dante Moore, and that ended up being one of
00:36 the crazy rollercoaster sagas.
00:38 So I've got pros and cons on the idea of pursuing Dante Moore.
00:43 Okay.
00:43 Let's start with the pros.
00:44 Moore, he's got more pun intended, more upside than any of the quarterbacks
00:50 currently on Miami's roster, and you know, you could argue more upside than,
00:54 you know, than the quarterback who's about to come in in the class of 2024
00:58 recruiting, I mean, Dante Moore, this is five former five-star top
01:01 recruited quarterback in the country.
01:03 So you could argue Dante Moore, uh, could be within the next few years,
01:09 couple of years, a better quarterback than anyone else you have in the pipeline.
01:12 So do you look at it from those simple terms?
01:14 Like, why not try to bring the guy in?
01:17 You don't have anything better right now or in the pipeline
01:19 than Dante Moore, why not?
01:21 Right.
01:21 That's a pro.
01:22 Another pro is mentioned.
01:25 It's the former top high school quarterback in the class of 2023.
01:28 He can make every throw, including a cannon for a deep ball, and he can move.
01:33 He's a dual threat quarterback as well.
01:35 And then another pro, because this is something a lot of people had questions
01:39 about when more hit the portal was wherever he ends up, is he going to
01:45 basically only go somewhere that wants to start him as, you know, a second
01:49 year true sophomore, because I told you through a lot of interceptions this
01:53 past year, we're going to talk about the cons in just a second, but according
01:58 to the reports that have come out on more, and this is a quote from more Dante
02:01 Moore wants to go somewhere where he can develop, so maybe for him, priority
02:06 number one, isn't going somewhere where he can start immediately.
02:10 He wouldn't mind sitting behind a veteran quarterback for a year.
02:13 So that could be a pro a pro.
02:14 If you could get Dante Moore, he's not necessarily going to demand
02:17 to be on the field right away.
02:19 He might be cool sitting back and learning for a season and developing.
02:22 So that that's definitely a pro here are the cons.
02:25 Um, from an NIL standpoint, if you would want to bring in Dante
02:33 Moore and a veteran, right?
02:35 Because that that's a conversation that's been out there.
02:37 Miami might consider bringing in someone like a will Howard or a will
02:42 Rogers, or, you know, a Michael Pratt.
02:44 If he does decide not to go pro and stay in college, these are guys
02:47 with one year of eligibility left.
02:49 That way you get a strong veteran quarterback for one season to
02:53 bridge the gap for the next guy.
02:54 Maybe the next guy is Dante Moore.
02:56 The problem with that is have you guys seen the rumored dollar figures that
03:02 these quarterbacks that are in the portal are demanding, like we're
03:05 talking about seven figures of NIL.
03:08 It's going to cost to bring you most of these top quarterback transfers out
03:11 there from an NIL standpoint, the idea of bringing in Dante, even though Dante
03:17 may be willing to sit for a year, still going to command a big NIL price tag.
03:22 And then if you want to also get a veteran, that's going to
03:25 command a big NIL price tag.
03:26 So there's a chance that if you really wanted Dante more, you may not also be
03:31 able to allocate the, if you still need defensive tackles, which Miami does
03:35 safeties, you know, cornerback, certain other positions, wide receiver, maybe
03:39 that needs addressing and the transfer portal, that's a lot of NIL money to go
03:43 around, so that's definitely a con.
03:44 Okay.
03:45 Here's another con.
03:48 If you were to bring in Dante more with three years of eligibility left, what
03:53 kind of a ripple effect does that have on other young quarterbacks, right?
03:57 Do you know, you got a young guy in Emory Williams in your quarterback room.
04:01 You've got Judd Anderson coming in, in the class of 2024, Miami's still working
04:05 on CJ Bailey in the class of 2024.
04:08 You've got Luke Nickel committed for the class of 2025.
04:11 If you bring in a quarterback with three years of eligibility left, does
04:15 that drive other quarterbacks away?
04:16 Now, some of you might say it's a dog eat dog world.
04:20 Cream rises to the top.
04:22 If he's better than these guys, that's a good problem to have.
04:24 Here's the issue with that culturally.
04:27 This is a potential issue.
04:28 Okay.
04:28 Should you, or shouldn't you maybe be from a cultural standpoint, prioritizing
04:35 players who committed to you out of high school players who have been loyal to
04:39 you rather than, you know, a guy you're bringing in through NIL who was committed
04:44 and played somewhere else that are you sending the right message by potentially
04:48 driving quarterbacks away that wanted to be canes in the first place by bringing
04:53 in a guy who didn't, and he's now down to his second option.
04:56 Yeah.
04:57 Yeah.
04:57 Yeah.
