Alex Donno reacts to starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke leaving Miami through the transfer portal.
Transcript
00:00 The news came down around 7.30, 8pm last night.
00:03 Matt Zenitz was the first to report it, that Miami Hurricanes now former starting quarterback
00:09 Tyler Van Dyke is entering the transfer portal.
00:12 Few of you were surprised or disappointed.
00:16 I was not surprised.
00:18 I think when you look at the last two seasons for Van Dyke, not all of it was his fault,
00:24 right?
00:25 He was through the Josh Gaddis era and a really poor offensive line in 2022, the same way
00:30 we all did.
00:31 2023, the O-line was much better.
00:33 The overall talent level was better.
00:35 He was playing through a lot of injuries, but Van Dyke was so inconsistent the past
00:40 couple of years.
00:42 So inconsistent, was a roller coaster of emotions on his part, was a roller coaster with the
00:47 fan base and the way he was received.
00:50 And to me, when Van Dyke got benched after that North Carolina state game, when the starting
00:57 lineups came out for Florida state and we figured out Emery Williams, they were turning
01:02 to the true freshmen and Tyler Van Dyke was benched at that point.
01:06 That's when I was 99.9% sure Van Dyke is not going to be back next year.
01:12 Now, the roller coaster only continued from that point forward, because even though Miami
01:17 turned the page to Emery Williams, and I don't believe they would have gone back to Van Dyke
01:21 unless they had to Miami, turn the page to Emery Williams.
01:24 He breaks his arm right at the end of that game.
01:27 And then Miami has to go back to Van Dyke and then full freaking credit to Tyler, right?
01:33 You know, you can complain about Van Dyke and his inconsistencies all you want to, but
01:37 I give him so much credit for the way he finished the season.
01:41 Played so well against Louisville was not his fault or the offense's fault.
01:45 Really that Miami lost that game.
01:46 That was more on the defense and on some coaching decisions.
01:50 And then Van Dyke played lights out against Boston college, right through, uh, I think
01:55 three touchdowns or four touchdowns to zero interceptions over his final two games in
01:59 a Miami hurricanes uniform.
02:01 And in those final two games, you know, he definitely gave you flashes on what the Shannon
02:06 Dawson offense can look like with consistent quarterback play and with a real field general
02:11 on the field.
02:12 Cause Van Dyke looked like a field general for those final couple of games.
02:15 So it gives you some hope for the Shannon Dawson offense.
02:18 And then for Tyler Van Dyke, for him, I want the best for him.
02:22 Okay.
02:23 Now, obviously hurricanes fans would be a little pissed off if Van Dyke goes somewhere.
02:28 He's going to go somewhere, obviously in the portal.
02:30 And if he just plays lights out next year, I know some hurricanes fans will be like,
02:36 wait, we should have kept this guy.
02:38 We should have given him another chance here.
02:40 Uh, but I hope he does well.
02:42 Cause you know, it's his dream to play in the national football league someday.
02:46 Obviously he didn't do his draft stock.
02:48 Any favors this year would not be drafted.
02:51 That's why he's going to be taking his talent somewhere else.
02:54 Um, so I, I think the big questions are with Tyler Van Dyke entering the portal, by the
03:01 way, rest in peace to our pal war beast.
03:03 Uh, you know, we, we, we still miss him.
03:06 The live chat is not the same without war beast.
03:09 Uh, so you've got a couple questions now, um, long-term and short-term at the quarterback
03:15 position with Tyler Van Dyke, taking his talents into the transfer portal.
03:18 (whooshing)
