The Miami Hurricanes have extended an offer to Chaminade-Madonna quarterback Cedrick "CJ" Bailey. Brian Smith joins Alex Donno for a scouting report and an update on his recruitment. He is currently verbally committed to NC State.

00:00 Miami for whatever reason got in a little bit late into the game with CJ Bailey,
00:04 the quarterback from Chaminade.
00:06 And again, my understanding is the offer that Miami recently extended to him
00:12 is truly based on Miami thinking this is a quarterback we could really use and
00:17 develop here.
00:18 It's not just based on, hey, maybe we've got a shot at Jeremiah Smith if we offer
00:22 his quarterback that this is legitimate Miami really likes CJ Bailey.
00:26 >> Brian, he's been committed to NC State since last March.
00:30 Obviously, the pull of staying home or near home could be a powerful one for him.
00:35 Can Miami make up ground for a potential flip here?
00:37 >> I think that is based on the following question.
00:42 How much have they been recruiting him throughout?
00:44 Like, how did that work?
00:45 And I haven't talked to CJ recently.
00:47 He's a great kid, by the way.
00:49 I don't know.
00:50 He was a guy that got several offers, but I don't think Miami was hot on him early.
00:55 They just kept tabs.
00:58 >> Yeah. >> Does that bother him?
00:59 Like, he's a pretty chill guy.
01:00 But some kids that will rub raw, even if it's, and
01:04 I don't know which school he rooted for growing up.
01:06 I assume it was Miami or Florida State, cuz that's what most kids do in South
01:09 Florida, but does that really tick him off or somebody else around him?
01:14 I don't know.
01:15 I haven't spoken to anybody, but it is the local school.
01:20 Zayquan's committed, JoJo's committed, Jeremiah,
01:24 although I still expect him to end up at Ohio State until otherwise proven,
01:28 is a guy that would tell him, hey, this is what I think.
01:31 I think he would get all positive vibes from the kids that are around him that are
01:35 his buddies and have been forever.
01:36 So I wouldn't be surprised.
01:38 And let's be really honest.
01:40 Who's excited about NC State's offense right now?
01:43 I mean, and I'm not picking on them, but
01:46 they have a extremely defensive-minded head coach.
01:50 >> Right. >> He's really good at it.
01:52 But their offense stinks.
01:54 They stink and they don't have enough play.
01:56 >> Outside of KC Concepcion, and I've even heard some rumors,
02:00 Brian, that some people wonder if he might hit the transfer portal.
02:03 >> I, look, look, can you imagine what he would command on the market?
02:10 >> Yeah.
02:12 >> 500K would be bottom end.
02:14 >> I would love to get him down here.
02:16 Let me just put that on the record.
02:17 >> [LAUGH] >> If Miami can get into the KC
02:19 Concepcion sweepstakes, giddy up.
02:22 >> [LAUGH] >> Look, he's a dude.
02:25 >> Yeah.
02:26 >> So, but, yeah, but they don't have anybody else that excites them.
02:30 I'm not saying they don't have other good players.
02:32 They're power five kids.
02:33 I watched them three, four times.
02:35 They're not that great offensively.
02:37 They don't have a great offensive line.
02:38 They don't have anything besides him to go, okay, well, that.
02:40 So why would CJ wanna go there?
02:44 And the answer to all these things is always the same, and
02:46 I say it on this show and others, relationships.
02:49 How good is CJ's relationships at NC State compared to Miami and
02:53 what's the home pool?
02:55 That is a really big conundrum and only CJ can answer that question and
03:00 he's obviously not standing here.
03:01 So I think they can get him, but there's a lot of things to wade through.
03:06 That's not easy because recruiting is relationship based from top to bottom.
03:11 They made him a priority and congrats to NC State for
03:14 seeing the long term with him.
03:16 Because CJ's improvement from junior to senior year is significant.
03:20 I mean, it is huge.
03:22 I think there's no doubt about that.
03:25 And to be honest with you, CJ is the kind of kid that I think,
03:29 he's got a pretty high ceiling.
03:30 He's got a cannon for an arm.
03:32 He just has to add weight.
03:33 He's a toothpick.
03:33 He's buck 85 at six days.
03:35 He looks like a wing forward.
03:37 So he's got to add weight.
03:39 But after a year that he read shirts, yeah, he could compete.
03:43 The arm won't be a problem and he knows some of the guys on the roster.
03:47 He grew up playing with a bunch of them.
03:49 So it would be interesting if he came to Miami.
03:52 >> Anything more you can add to the scouting report because you've watched CJ
03:55 play in person more than most, right?
03:58 And if he were to end up at Miami,
04:01 what could Miami fans expect from a guy like CJ Bailey?
04:04 >> He's the home run hitter, man.
04:07 Now I know that he's throwing to dudes.
04:09 When he played with SFE and with Chaminade, it's not fair.
04:13 But at the same time, I mean, my dead grandmother would have thrown for 50%.
04:18 But the point is still the same.
04:19 >> [LAUGH] >> And I kid CJ about this and
04:22 stuff like, well, you're throwing to Jeremiah and Jojo.
04:24 Which one's it gonna be today?
04:25 I give him a hard time or something.
04:28 But at the same time, he would be decisive.
04:31 >> Yeah. >> Even when he made an error,
04:33 he's decisive.
04:34 So and he's gotten better.
04:36 The knock on him is that he would throw it too hard on the shorter stuff.
04:39 And that's typical.
04:41 Again, he has a cannon for an arm.
04:44 Now he's starting to take something off and lead his receivers with touch.
04:48 And Phil Simms said this a long time ago in the NFL.
04:51 If you wanna rack up yards, the most important play is to check down.
04:55 Of course, that's the most boring play in football.
04:57 But second and six is better than second and ten or an interception.
05:01 CJ has learned that.
05:02 Phil Simms obviously knows a little about football.
05:05 Those are the kinds of plays where when you start to see them as a high school
05:09 player, that's a really good sign for us to scout kids.
05:12 Cuz most of the guy could be standing there with Andrew Ivins, John Garcia,
05:15 whoever it is, and we're talking about a quarterback.
05:17 We're like, this kid's forcing it into coverage.
05:19 He doesn't wanna go to his short.
05:21 It's the conversation we have constantly.
05:23 CJ has made that progression.
05:25 Now the question is, how quickly can he pick up the offense wherever he goes,
05:28 NC State or Miami?
05:30 I think he'll be okay with that.
05:31 He's a smart kid.
05:33 But the arm talent and the ability to adjust, he's shown it.
05:36 So I think he's a guy that could be a very high ceiling quarterback.
