Alex Donno explains how important key stats show that Miami was really more than two wins better than last season.

00:00 I think it was bill Parcells who said you are what your record says you are.
00:04 And I'm not going to argue with that.
00:06 Miami hurricanes were seven and five team, but I'm hoping what some of the
00:12 other numbers were is a sign for significant improvements, certainly
00:17 from 2022 to 2023, and I'd like to think laying the foundations for
00:21 even more improvements in 2024.
00:25 So Miami went from five and seven in 2022, which is one of the most
00:30 miserable football seasons ever.
00:32 Right.
00:33 Uh, you know, middle Tennessee loss.
00:35 Like I don't want to get into it, but 2022 was absolutely miserable.
00:39 2023 was much less miserable.
00:42 Um, and if you look at the statistics, team stats and individual stats, honestly,
00:48 Miami should have made more than a two game improvement.
00:52 We will never forget that they were literally a kneel down
00:56 away from being eight and four.
00:58 I think eight and four would be a better reflection on, on what Miami actually
01:03 accomplished on the field this year.
01:05 We've already given you guys some good stats, um, that show big
01:09 picture improvement from 22 to 23.
01:12 Here's another one that was sent to me by another, a good
01:15 friend of mine going back years.
01:17 We were on WVUM together, student radio.
01:20 Jeremy Marks pelts JMP, who sent me these numbers, 2023 versus 2022.
01:27 Miami hurricanes seven and five this year versus five and seven last year.
01:32 This year, Miami's plus differential was one 20 Miami's net scoring plus one 20.
01:41 Last year was minus 34.
01:43 That's a huge jump to be plus one 20.
01:46 Um, this season, 177 rushing yards per game versus 128 rushing yards per game.
01:54 Last year, an improvement of almost 50 yards, 5.2 yards per carry this year,
02:00 which is an excellent number versus 3.7 last year, very pedestrian number.
02:05 97 rushing yards per game allowed this year versus one 43 allowed last year.
02:13 And we already talked about this a little bit earlier this week.
02:16 I'll reiterate.
02:17 This was a stat sent to me by our listener BP, who says in 2022, Miami in
02:24 seven losses, they lost by an average of 21 points in 2023 Miami's five
02:30 losses were by an average of eight points.
02:33 So again, if, if you go by the big picture numbers, Miami should have, and could
02:38 have made more than that, a two game jump this year, what were the big factors
02:43 that led to only the two game jump?
02:45 Um, I already mentioned one of them.
02:47 You take a kneel down against Georgia tech.
02:50 You're it's over.
02:51 You're eight and four, right?
02:53 You're literally eight and four.
02:54 That's a one game improvement that came down to one bad coaching call.
02:58 All right.
02:58 Yes.
03:00 There were other clock management, uh, play decision issues this year.
03:05 So I'm hoping Mario Cristobal and my, I think he's already learned.
03:11 Second time was the charm.
03:13 Cause he did the same thing at Oregon.
03:14 I think he has learned from the mistake of not taking that knee.
03:18 I don't expect that same mistake to happen again.
03:20 I also think that this off season, and it's not just Cristobal,
03:24 cause obviously you have an offensive coordinator calling plays.
03:27 You have analysts that are supposed to be helping you make these proper decisions
03:31 when it comes to the analytics and you know, when to go for it, when not to go
03:35 for it, you know, when to pass, when not to like, there needs to be a lot of
03:39 self-reflection and self-scouting from the coaching staff because they need to
03:43 tighten up and they need to sharpen up because, you know, we talked about it
03:46 last season in most of Miami's losses, they were getting blown out.
03:51 So we weren't, we didn't have the luxury of having these discussions about how,
03:55 Hey, we were one bad coaching decision away from securing a victory.
03:59 Right.
03:59 Uh, but this year we had so many close losses, those conversations came up.
04:03 So we need to tighten up the coaching.
04:05 The other big area, I think that could, you know, separate Miami from, you know,
04:09 seven wins this year, or maybe could have been nine or 10 wins this year.
04:14 You have to find consistency at the quarterback position.
04:18 Um, you know, I, I try to give Tyler Van Dyke some benefit of the doubt.
04:23 Cause I know he, for much of the middle of the season was
04:25 playing through a lot of pain.
04:27 I get it still made a lot of poor decisions still through way too many interceptions.
04:31 Yeah.
04:31 Yeah.
