Adding a Transfer Portal Cornerback Would Help Miami's 2024 Defense
Transcript
00:00 While Miami's defense has been good this year, one of the key concerns has been and
00:05 continues to be the ability for the cornerbacks to cover, especially against the bigger elite
00:12 receivers.
00:13 This is a problem for every team in college football, and Miami is not one of those teams
00:19 excluded from it.
00:20 Quite frankly, nobody is.
00:23 You're always looking for more size, more athleticism, more depth, and just flat out
00:27 more numbers at corner.
00:29 Look at Miami towards the end of the year.
00:32 Not one, but two players get hurt right before you play Florida State.
00:36 That's not going to go well very often.
00:39 Miami did rally and circle the wagons, but that's part of it.
00:43 They had planned ahead.
00:44 They had added enough pieces from the portal to do that.
00:47 Jadis Richard, for instance, played very well out of the blue.
00:51 We hadn't seen much of it, but the transfer from Vanderbilt was a big help.
00:55 He ends up being a starter full-time in 2024 for the Miami Hurricanes.
01:01 Does that happen every year, though?
01:03 Hard to say, but the best thing to do is to bring in as many talented players as possible,
01:08 run the portal, and then let the chips fall where they may.
01:12 Just like many other positions, Miami has to at least consider bringing in one, if not
01:17 two, players at the cornerback position.
01:20 There is no specific player I'm aiming towards here, but they have to go through the process
01:25 like everybody else.
01:27 If you miss a corner in any given year, it can completely derail your season because
01:32 teams can just pick on that spot, which then mitigates your talent of guys like Reuben
01:37 Bain or our friends Francisco Malygoa, anybody else in the front seven because it's just
01:42 hike and throw.
01:43 You eliminate the front seven where Miami certainly has an advantage over the vast majority
01:48 teams in college football.
01:49 So again, at least one cornerback should probably be what the Miami fan base expects for Chris
01:56 DeBall and his staff to bring in.
01:57 And this might even be something you look at from a yearly perspective.
02:01 Even though Miami is recruiting well, Stafford, Demar Brown, etc., they need to always be
02:06 cognizant of what's there because cornerback really changes a college football game.
