The Miami Hurricanes lost to Florida State despite a valiant effort from freshman quarterback Emory Williams. Williams got injured late in the game. Is Tyler Van Dyke the QB1 yet again?
Transcript
00:00 Miami comes up short.
00:02 Hurricanes lose 27 to 20 in Tallahassee.
00:05 If you had told me before the game
00:07 that against a top four Florida State team
00:11 at Dote Campbell Stadium,
00:14 that Miami would be in position to tie the game
00:17 on a final drive with a freshman quarterback,
00:20 I would have signed up for that.
00:22 If you gave me that scenario pregame,
00:24 I would have signed up for that.
00:26 The fact that any of us on the Miami side
00:29 actually have the luxury of trying to point
00:32 to some coaching mistakes or bad calls by the ACC officials
00:37 as being things that possibly cost Miami the game
00:42 to even be in that position
00:43 is something that I do not take for granted.
00:45 Let me start with the quarterback play
00:48 because, wow, I don't think any of us
00:51 would have predicted the roller coaster
00:52 that we had during the week
00:54 that culminated with the middle of that final drive
00:57 against the Florida State Seminoles.
00:59 I'm so proud of Emery Williams,
01:02 the true freshman signal caller, 19-year-old
01:05 who we find out on Saturday that he's the starter.
01:09 He found out on Thursday.
01:11 I'm so proud of the way he played.
01:13 And now my heart bleeds for him
01:15 because he's working his way
01:17 through what Mario Christobal described
01:18 as a significant injury.
01:21 How did that happen?
01:22 It happened in the line of duty, my friends.
01:24 Down seven points, late in the fourth quarter,
01:28 fourth and two.
01:29 It's literally the most important down
01:32 and the most important play of the season to this point.
01:35 Emery Williams puts his body on the line
01:38 doing whatever is necessary to stretch
01:41 and pick up that first down.
01:43 He suffers a painful injury in the process.
01:46 Left arm, shoulder, I'm not exactly sure.
01:49 We just know it's serious.
01:51 And he was taken to a Tallahassee hospital
01:55 after the game to undergo tests
01:57 and whatever treatment he needed.
01:59 So again, I'm praying for Emery.
02:01 And also I'm certainly praying for his family
02:04 'cause his parents were there watching the game.
02:06 And that was obviously a tough sight
02:08 for any of them to have to see.
02:10 But that play, that embodies everything
02:13 that it means to me to be a Miami Hurricane.
02:15 Emery Williams did that.
02:17 Williams goes eight for 23 for 175 yards,
02:21 two touchdown passes, no interceptions in the game.
02:24 Now, some people look at that stat line and say,
02:26 "Nope, he's not the answer."
02:28 But let me remind you, this is a true freshman
02:32 starting in one of the toughest places to play
02:35 in the country against the best Florida State team
02:37 in a decade.
02:38 The moment was not too big for him.
02:40 He definitely made his share of freshmen mistakes
02:43 in the second half.
02:44 He had a long cold streak in the second half,
02:47 but then he responded with an 85 yard touchdown pass
02:50 to Jacoby George.
02:51 And he also responded with that fourth down play
02:54 where he unfortunately got injured.
02:56 And most importantly with Emery Williams,
02:59 young man took care of the football.
03:01 Zero interceptions.
03:03 That to me is more significant
03:05 than the eight for 23 completion percentage.
03:07 Zero interceptions.
03:09 That to me validated the decision
03:12 that Mario Cristobal and Shannon Dawson made
03:14 to start him over Tyler Van Dyke.
03:17 The fade that he threw for the first touchdown
03:19 to Jacoby George was perfectly executed.
03:22 That was a big time throw and a big time play.
03:24 It's unfortunate now that Emery Williams
03:27 likely won't be healthy enough to finish out the year.
03:30 I can't imagine we see him again this season
03:32 because I would love to see
03:34 where he can take Miami from here.
