00:00 As we approach kickoff between the Miami Hurricanes and Florida State Seminoles, we just get this
00:05 breaking news.
00:07 Emery Williams, the true freshman, will be the starting quarterback for Miami today against
00:12 the Florida State Seminoles.
00:14 You are locked on Canes, your daily podcast on the Miami Hurricanes.
00:19 Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
00:23 I am Alex Dono.
00:33 I'm a University of Miami alumnus, longtime South Florida sports radio vet, and contributor to
00:37 allhurricanes.com.
00:39 Thank you so much for making this emergency episode of Locked On Canes your first listen and your
00:43 first watch today.
00:45 So this quarterback change, first place I saw it, I want to give credit, was David Lake of Inside the
00:51 U.
00:52 That was the first person I saw to report this, that Emery Williams, the true freshman, is going to
00:57 get the start.
00:58 This is surely a popular pregame move, because I know most Canes fans just didn't want to see Tyler
01:06 Van Dyke keep doing what he's been doing, but it's still a bold move.
01:10 This is still a bold move by Cristobal Offensive Coordinator Shannon Dawson, because you are giving
01:16 your keys to the offense today to a true freshman with one start under his belt, four appearances
01:24 under his belt, who did a really nice job managing a game against Clemson and making a couple of big
01:31 throws when he had to, but he's being thrown into the lion's den now.
01:35 Emery Williams is getting thrown into the fire.
01:38 With that said, I know it's a risky move, and you're going up against the toughest opponent on your
01:43 schedule, you're going up against a rival, and you're on the road at Dope Campbell Stadium.
01:49 I still think it is the right move, because a couple of things on this.
01:52 A, making this move does show that there is accountability, and for whatever the reasons may be,
02:01 physical, psychological, Tyler Van Dyke's not been getting the job done.
02:06 Tyler Van Dyke, in his last four starts, has thrown 10 interceptions.
02:09 He turned it over four times in that loss against NC State last week.
02:13 Cristobal is sending the message that no matter what position you play, if you're not getting it done
02:19 on the field, and in this case, if you're not taking care of the football, everyone, whether you're a
02:23 quarterback or a long snapper, anybody can lose their job and get benched.
02:29 So that's number one.
02:30 And then the other part of it is, the part of it that we don't know, okay, is how did all three
02:36 quarterbacks look in practice this week?
02:38 I can't tell you how they looked, because we don't get to watch practices, right?
02:42 I'm sure the practice evaluation was a big part of it.
02:45 If Tyler Van Dyke wasn't really standing above the rest in practice, perhaps and hopefully,
02:50 Emery Williams had a really good week in practice this week.
02:53 You know, the limited details that I do know, or at least I heard about practice this week,
02:58 is that Tyler and Emery, at least the two of them, and possibly all three of them,
03:04 including Ja'Kari Brown, did share first-team reps this week.
03:07 So it wasn't as if, hey, you know, they went in this entire week with Emery taking all the
03:12 first-team reps or Van Dyke taking all the first-team reps.
03:15 They were splitting reps throughout the week.
03:17 And then the decision was made, has been made, shortly before kickoff that Emery Williams is
03:23 going to get the start.
03:24 It's not going to be easy for him.
03:26 Objective number one, taking care of the football, okay?
03:30 Three, four turnovers, that's not acceptable.
03:34 And that's not just going to get you beat in a game like this.
03:36 That's going to get you wrecked in a game like this.
03:39 If you throw three interceptions against Florida State, you can kiss any chance of victory goodbye.
03:43 So, yes, we can probably expect the game plan to be a little bit conservative and a little bit
03:48 vanilla, which puts even more importance on Miami winning at the line of scrimmage.
03:53 The defense has to play stout, as they have played for most of the season.
03:58 And, you know, you're going to have to pressure Jordan Travis, try to make him,
04:02 force him into making off-schedule throws and maybe making some mistakes.
04:06 And you've got to tackle really, really well.
04:08 And yes, on the offensive side of the football, you have to hope Emery Williams is able to uncork
04:13 some big throws because you can't win if everything is behind the line of scrimmage in this game.
04:19 Because then you can't establish your running game either.
04:22 As far as the running game goes, reportedly Miami is going to have A.J.
04:26 Allen back.
04:27 Mark Fletcher has been the workhorse the last couple of weeks, especially last week.
04:31 He probably will be the primary running back again.
04:34 We'll know pretty early in this game how much of a push Miami's offensive line is able to get
04:39 against Florida State's defensive front.
04:41 And Emery Williams, so far, playing in this game, the first snap that he takes today will
04:48 officially burn his red shirt.
04:50 So he will no longer be a red shirt candidate.
04:53 This is going to be it for him.
04:54 This will be his fifth appearance on the season.
04:56 And so far this year, young Mr. Williams has completed 36 of his 48 pass attempts.
05:02 That's good for 75% completions, I should say.
05:06 He's got one touchdown pass and one interception.
05:09 The only start he's made in his career was that double overtime victory against Clemson,
05:14 where, again, they kept the game plan very controlled for him.
05:18 He went 24 for 33 for 151 yards, one touchdown and one INT in that game.
05:24 And he's going to be the general today.
05:27 Emery Williams is going to be the guy leading this team.
05:29 Miami are about two touchdown underdogs in this game.
05:33 Florida State's 9-0.
05:35 Miami has an opportunity to get the signature win of all signature wins today, going up
05:40 against the odds and maybe having a chance to play spoiler for Florida State's college
05:44 football playoff hopes.
05:46 So again, reported Emery Williams, the true freshman, not Tyler Van Dyke, will be the
05:53 starter today.
05:54 Emery Williams gets his crack at quarterback one.
05:57 We'll see you guys after the game right here on another episode of Locked on Canes.
