650 trees have been planted by dozens of volunteers in North Shields. The trees have been planted along the coast road after a resident had the idea to help reduce air and noise pollution. We visited the volunteers as they planted the trees and also got our gardening gloves on to help.

00:00 lets the roots go out and about again.
00:04 And then just put it in the hole and then fill it back in again with
00:10 some of the rest of the earth that you've dug out.
00:13 Just over the top and with the bits with like the turf on it just turn the grass
00:16 down and stops it growing. I managed to plant just one of the 650
00:21 trees that will now stand along Cholliford Avenue. Before this was
00:25 just a patch of grass and it wasn't used for much.
00:29 But after a local resident got in touch with North Tyneside Council with an idea
00:33 to plant trees, the idea has now come to life.
00:38 As many of us from the North East know the Coast Road is a very busy road with
00:42 a lot of traffic which is why the trees are being planted to help with air
00:46 pollution and to help with a bit of noise pollution
00:49 for those who live in the estate near it. North Tyneside Council have set a goal
00:54 of being carbon net zero by 2030 which is a big ambition but there are
00:59 hopes that things like the trees will make some impact on the climate crisis.
01:05 Last year we planted 10,000 trees.
01:08 We're used to planting trees and opening this up to the community.
01:12 I mean we only know by the weather that we're having at the moment. I think
01:16 everybody's waking up to the fact that we are undergoing severe climate
01:20 change and we have to adapt the way that we live and the way that we
01:24 travel sustainably and the way that we get to
01:27 places that we need to be. The volunteers were a huge mix of age
01:30 rangers and many of those in the younger generation were helping out as they want
01:35 to help their environment. We've been planting the trees to like
01:40 help us be able to like breathe because more and more trees are
01:43 getting cut down which is like affecting the environment a bit.
01:48 It feels quite happy because I like to plant because we plant a lot of like
01:53 vegetables and stuff in the back garden and I like
01:56 like that we do that so it's kind of like
02:00 nice that I'm also planting the trees as well. I think it's really important
02:03 because like people believe trees tend to be
02:07 calming and relaxing and if we plant them now then the future like
02:14 in the future it'll be able like these trees that are getting planted now
02:18 will then be able to help us in the future.
02:22 Yeah yeah I mean not only will it benefit us and everyone that's here
02:27 today in our lifetimes but it means that our children as well as sort of
02:33 the younger generations throughout the course of the next
02:37 hundreds of years in fact will most definitely see
02:42 some sort of positive result from that and I think it's also
02:45 really good that our young people that we represent can see
02:51 that their local representatives actually are out here getting our
02:57 hands dirty and making sure that we do what the
03:00 young people in North Tennessee want us to.
