We went out into Manchester to ask people on the street about how they use their pto time at work to feel like they get the most from their holidays.

00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World. My name is Theo Houston Betts and today I'm out on the streets of Manchester asking people about holidays.
00:05And that's because school kids in the UK are just coming to the end now of a two-week break that they had for the Easter holidays.
00:10And as with many people growing up, I imagine those extended holidays were really the highlight of your year.
00:16Now, I'm not expecting adults to be given six-week holidays, but usually when you're working, you get a period of time that you're allowed to take off.
00:22And as I've grown older, I've sort of started taking off the Friday, going away for three days and trying to pack in as much as I can.
00:28I'm curious whether people in Manchester have the same attitude as me or whether they, much like when they were kids, want that long break of time where they can relax and unwind.
00:38Here's what they had to say.
00:39I think you're probably different to me.
00:41I, I, until like next week when I've got like 10 days off, I've not had longer than like three days off in a row.
00:50So most of the time I just take like a long weekend and then just spread 25 days holiday over the entire year until Christmas.
00:57I usually take quite big chunks off, but I'll also work remotely from wherever I am sometimes as well.
01:06I might book like, if I've got to go, if I'm going to go abroad, I might book like a few days off.
01:11But I haven't been off for like more than a week in a long time.
01:15Yeah, we were talking about this the other day.
01:16You were like, when was the last time I took a chunk off?
01:17Over a year ago.
01:19Probably over a year ago.
01:20I don't think he ever takes any time off.
01:22We were like, we both work in the freelance world.
01:24So it's almost a little works a little bit differently, doesn't it?
01:28For me personally, I try and take time off in January when there's a little bit of downtime with music and events.
01:34And therefore, I try and take a large period of time off in that period if it financially suits.
01:40Normally I would do this.
01:42Normally it'd be like a Thursday, like a book off a Thursday, Friday, don't work Saturday, Sunday, go back to work on the Monday to do long weekends.
01:48But this year it's gone completely different.
01:51I've booked a week off to go on holiday with my husband.
01:55And then I'm going away with my mum at the end of the year.
01:57So I've now got two big, long periods of holiday.
02:00But then like no days dotted around, which will be a bit of a first for me because I've not done that for ages.
02:06Yeah, and explore a place properly.
02:08If you go away, it gives you that time and that freedom to really experience it and almost like live your life like you were living somewhere else at that moment.
02:18So, yeah.
02:20Yeah, like I'm stuck with the two long holidays now.
02:23One, I've got another long weekend booked in and then Christmas.
02:26So between like September I go abroad and then October, November, nothing.
02:31And then Christmas in December, which is only three days.
02:34In July I'm going to Iceland and Canada, which I'm going to be working remotely.
02:38And I'm not paying a single penny for it, which is the best bit.
02:41So there you have it.
02:42There isn't really a right answer.
02:43We're curious to hear what you think.
02:45Would you lean towards taking off your holidays in big chunks and trying to unwind as best you can?
02:50Or do you think spreading them out so that you get little periods of rest throughout the year is a better way of approaching it?
02:55As I say, let us know.
02:56Follow Manchester World for more.
02:57And we'll see you again soon.
