Alex Donno and Larry Blustein discuss Miami Hurricanes' freshman quarterback Emory Williams and how much better he can get at The U.
Transcript
00:00 Mario Cristobal gave indications that Tyler Van Dyke is probably back this week.
00:04 Obviously, we'll wait till the warm-ups on Saturday.
00:09 Last week, there was an expectation that Van Dyke would play, but it's nice to know that
00:14 if Van Dyke isn't good to go yet, Emery Williams can help this team win football games, because
00:19 that's what he did last week.
00:20 What did you see from Emery Blue, and how did that compare to what you saw from him
00:24 at Milton High School?
00:26 Well, obviously, he's matured quite a bit in the last year, year plus.
00:31 He's been around the system now for a bit.
00:36 Like I said, first half last week, a little timid, wasn't getting a lot of help.
00:43 Offensive line kind of broke down a few times, didn't give him a clear view.
00:47 But then as the second half began, and Miami started running the ball, and that was the
00:52 key.
00:54 We all thought that, as you said before, that Clemson would be the team that would
01:00 run the ball for 200 yards.
01:02 And it seemed like Miami kind of took their lead.
01:08 That's what made it easy for Emery.
01:09 Then he started spotting guys, had a little bit more time, got confidence on the sideline
01:15 from the coaches.
01:16 And obviously, I'm sure that Tyler was in on that too, because when you're on the sideline,
01:21 you become another coach, because you're fresh in the mind.
01:26 And that's the one thing about a Tyler Van Dyke.
01:28 And there's a lot of players like this nationally now, that when they're on the bench or they're
01:35 injured, they'll praise the other quarterback.
01:38 And he did.
01:39 He said that Emery has such a high ceiling because of the fact that he's physical, he's
01:47 6'4", throws the ball around.
01:49 He just has to have experience in reading defenses.
01:52 And you know what?
01:53 Very few guys will come into a situation where you have a building program and be able to
01:58 dominate.
01:59 Usually, when you have the Bryce Youngs and players like that, because they're coming
02:03 in a situation where they have 10 NFL drafts around them.
02:08 I just think that he did a real good job.
02:11 And I got to give all the credit in the world to former University of Miami Hurricane Ty
02:15 Wise, who kind of kept me updated, because he lives up that way, he watches him.
02:21 And he knew, the first time he wasn't so sold on him, but then he saw him a year later and
02:27 he said he matured and he's going to be really good and he was happy.
02:30 And I think he went over and talked to him and congratulated him.
02:34 And speaking about Ty Wise, we got to keep his kid on the radar at 6'5", 300-pound sophomore.
02:40 And wow.
02:41 I love it.
02:43 Now just watching Emery going back to spring, and even like, I didn't watch him in person
02:48 in high school, but I watched some of his tape and all that.
02:52 He does remind me a little bit of Ken Dorsey.
02:54 I think he has that sort of stature and that sort of potential.
02:59 Is there any other comparison you might be able to think of?
03:02 And I'll also ask you, what do you think Emery Williams' ceiling is?
03:05 Because Hurricanes fans, we got a glimpse of him, and especially in that fourth quarter,
03:09 people are starting to think, hey, this could be QB1 a year or two down the road.
03:13 If not even sooner, I mean, well, a year down the road.
03:16 Well, you know, obviously you made a good, I think that's a good comparison with Ken
03:20 Dorsey because, you know, a lot of the other Hurricane quarterbacks we've had were a little
03:24 bit shorter, maybe more mobile.
03:28 So you know, especially of late, you know, you look back at Ryan Collins and quarterbacks
03:33 like that, who, you know, who also beat you with their legs.
03:37 You know, the young man that you have as your sidekick on the post game show, he's another
03:44 one, Rozier, you know, who is a more run past type of guy.
03:48 So he is more like Ken Dorsey.
03:51 He's not going to crush you with his speed, but he's got that size and he's got, you know,
03:57 innate ability to find guys.
03:59 And his ceiling is just amazing.
04:02 And then I think when you hear people and again, let me, you know, I try to give people
04:07 credit where credit's due and got to give Frank Ponce, the offensive coordinator at
04:12 Appalachian state, a lot of credit for this because he's the one that went up there and
04:16 said, you know what he sold at the time, you know, off, you know, he didn't really have
04:21 an offensive coordinator, you know, to kind of sell them on at the time, cause they were
04:25 kind of in flux.
04:27 So he told Mario I'll vouch for him because I think the kid's going to be really special.
04:31 He's an intelligent kid.
04:32 He's physically gifted, goes the ball all the way around.
04:36 And then he's, he's a kid who gets it.
