Why Rueben Bain, Jr. will continue to improve

00:00 The eye in the sky does not lie.
00:04 That's an old saying in football talking about
00:06 what happened on the field when filmed is fact.
00:11 Can't debate it.
00:12 There it is.
00:13 We can go back and look at it.
00:15 As for Ruben Bain and the Miami Hurricanes,
00:18 this is something that actually started prior
00:21 to him ever arriving in Coral Gables
00:23 as a hurricane student athlete.
00:26 At Miami Central, he had over 70 sacks
00:29 and he was a player that was just dominant
00:31 all throughout his prep career.
00:33 And again, this is the Miami Public League.
00:35 Miami Central has played against teams like IMG and won.
00:39 He was a guy that we knew in the recruiting industry,
00:41 those of us that have covered Ruben Hurricane Bain,
00:45 he was gonna be a dude, a really good one.
00:48 Now, I'm not gonna sit here and say I expected him
00:50 to be Miami's most likely leader in sacks as a freshman.
00:54 That's completely false.
00:56 But at the same time,
00:57 I knew he was gonna have an impact this year.
00:59 So the purpose of this is to say the following.
01:02 Ruben Hurricane Bain is just getting started
01:05 in the film that any of you can watch.
01:07 And for those of us that get to see him at field level,
01:10 still the same deal.
01:11 The eye in the sky does not lie.
01:13 And there's more to come.
01:14 So here's what I think is coming.
01:17 Number one, he's gonna get better against the run.
01:19 He's a guy that learns very quickly.
01:22 I asked Ruben after the spring game
01:24 when he had like three sacks,
01:26 okay, what are you looking at?
01:27 What are you doing?
01:28 Why are you understanding this so quickly?
01:31 And he was nonchalant about it,
01:32 which that's typically Ruben.
01:33 He's a pretty laid back kind of guy.
01:35 But he's like, I could see what they were gonna do
01:37 based on stance, et cetera, et cetera.
01:40 And I just acted accordingly.
01:41 He was almost like, why are you asking me this?
01:44 This is obvious.
01:45 Well, it's not obvious for everybody, Ruben,
01:47 because you're a little different.
01:49 For those of you that don't know,
01:50 Ruben is not only physically gifted,
01:52 he is not only very motivated.
01:56 Ruben Bain is very intelligent on and off the field.
02:00 He picks up things about people really quick.
02:03 Part of that's innate,
02:04 part of that's just his nature of being competitive
02:06 and wanting to gain knowledge,
02:08 but he's going to figure out tendencies.
02:10 And that brings us to a very important point
02:13 and one that is just absolutely to Ruben's benefit,
02:17 and that's the coaching staff at Miami.
02:19 Good fits in multiple ways.
02:21 You have two very good defensive line coaches
02:23 and other people around the defensive line
02:25 helping out, kind of helps to have the guy
02:28 with the gold jacket.
02:29 Big Joe knows what he's doing.
02:31 They get after the quarterback
02:32 and what they're trying to do, fits Ruben.
02:36 They have the same mentality, so that's great.
02:38 But the really key cog here,
02:40 and it was demonstrated in the Clemson game, is Guidry.
02:44 The new defensive coordinator will try different things
02:48 and do it seemingly overnight by football speed
02:51 and get it done quickly.
02:53 Against Clemson, he knew that he needed a different defense,
02:57 in essence, because of how they run and operate their system.
03:01 Got a mobile quarterback,
03:02 they've got a guy in the backfield in Shipley plus Mafa
03:05 that's pretty darn tough to bring down.
03:07 We wanted to do it differently.
03:08 He talked about it in the press conference.
03:11 Well, they went with a 3-3-5.
03:13 Ruben's used to being a 4-3 guy,
03:16 but he'd played some standing up already.
03:18 This is an advantage
03:21 because he was playing outside linebacker
03:22 a little bit earlier this year.
03:24 And for those of you who don't know,
03:25 he's in the 275 range right now, maybe even 280.
03:29 It's rare to see a guy that big at the NFL level,
03:32 let alone college and being a freshman,
03:33 but he's able to do it.
03:34 Athletically, he's obviously gifted.
03:37 Ruben also picked up this new scheme
03:40 that Guidry and his guys cooked up,
03:42 and it's stuff that they knew,
03:43 but they're going to adapt to their players,
03:46 and Ruben made it happen.
03:48 This is just the tip of the iceberg, folks.
03:50 Ruben Bain is dominating up front as a pass rusher,
03:54 but all these little things that he's learning
03:56 is going to help him against the run.
03:58 I think it's 4 1/2 sacks right now,
04:00 five tackles for loss.
04:01 Yeah, that's right.
04:02 Those numbers are just going to keep going up
04:05 as the season gets long,
04:06 but also in terms of the propensity for it to happen.
04:10 He's seeing and learning faster than most guys.
04:13 Don't just take him as an athlete.
04:15 This is a smart football player.
04:18 I've seen it with my own eyes for multiple years,
04:20 and if you talk to anybody else in the recruiting industry,
04:23 John Garcia, Andrew Ivins,
04:25 anybody else that has seen this young man live,
04:27 they're going to give you a similar synopsis.
04:30 Final point about Ruben Bain.
04:32 Before his freshman year is over,
04:34 he's going to have a play or plays in games
04:38 that is going to change the outcome completely,
04:40 not just like the Clemson game, but another level.
04:43 I'm guaranteeing you that.
04:44 It's just a matter of time.
04:46 Not if, but when.
04:48 Hurricane Ruben Bain is a fantastic football player
04:53 and one that Miami fans, quite frankly,
04:55 should really enjoy over the next two years
04:57 because after that third year,
04:59 he's probably headed to the league.
