After the various knockbacks, Hugh begins to make progress with the physiotherapy on his hands, leading to a thaw in relations between him and former flame Marjorie Fisher. Hugh is eager to be put to some use, but finds he cannot adapt to civilian life and wants to retrain to go back in the air force, horrifying both his other and Marjorie.
