Former Miami Hurricanes defensive back and national champion Tolbert Bain talks about the early dominance from his cousin Rueben Bain on Miami's defensive line.
Transcript
00:00 Let's start with your little cousin because he is terrorizing offensive backfields.
00:05 He's off to an incredible start.
00:06 I don't think I've ever seen a true freshman do what Reuben Bain is doing out there.
00:12 I was talking with Alonzo last night, my former roommate, when we played at Miami.
00:18 And I asked him, because he was in the NFL scouting, I said, "How many defensive tackles,
00:25 defensive ends, had that type of impact as a true freshman?"
00:30 And it was like a handful.
00:31 He couldn't, it wasn't a lot of guys.
00:35 And the scary part, which is a great part for us, is he's still learning.
00:42 He has one of the great players to ever play on the D-line, coaching him with Jason Taylor.
00:47 He's doing a magnificent job.
00:49 I spoke with Ed Ogeron last week, Vince Wilford.
00:53 We were by practice and both of them just excited to see a young man like that.
00:59 And the best thing about him is he has a different mindset than me, myself, because he's like
01:10 Alonzo and Mike Irvin, played with both of them.
01:14 And when practice was over, those two were always trying to figure out another way to
01:18 get better, doing something.
01:21 Myself, I'm going to tell you who I was.
01:24 I was going to practice hard for two and a half hours, three hours, however long we were
01:28 out there.
01:29 Then I was waiting to see, "Where are we going tonight?
01:33 And where are the girls?"
01:34 But he don't have that type of mindset, and I'm so proud and happy for him.
01:41 He's a wonderful, humble, great person.
01:43 I'm just excited to see what he's doing.
01:46 And he deserves everything that he gets.
01:49 And the sky's the limit for the kid.
01:51 Loving my little cousin.
01:53 >> Yeah, and I was telling Alex, because you were down at the practice the week before
02:00 the spring game, because I was down there with Cesar and I saw you, and then I'm watching
02:04 him practice.
02:05 And in the practice session, he's beating everybody off the line.
02:09 He was in the backfield constantly, even if he didn't make the play.
02:13 He's disrupting everything, Tolbert.
02:15 He's got a mindset, like he's got blinders on.
02:22 This is what I want, and that's what I'm going to do.
02:24 It doesn't take any plays off.
02:26 >> Yeah, his motor is unbelievable.
02:29 And that's why I go back and say it's so scary to see him.
02:34 But when he was leaving the eighth grade, going to the ninth grade, his mom posted a
02:40 picture of him dunking the basketball.
02:45 And I'm looking, and I'm like, holy, you shouldn't be able to do all that.
02:51 So I told his dad, his uncle, I was like, he's going to be the greatest Bane out of
02:57 all of us.
